Unfortunately very unfriendly staff at check out. We were 10 minutes late and we were treated rudely

A great environment at Quinta da Penha de Franca for our 7 nights in Madiera. Relaxed and uncrowded with a very good breakfast and an excellent cocktail bar. Madeira is an affordable Island paradise which improves every year.
Stay in Funchal and visit Camara De Lobo and Machico.

loved it. next door cafe/restaurant played dreadful music loudly on Friday afternoon and evening Not nice. Generally lots of bits needed attention, e. g. some tiles round the pool were cracked, garden walls in the old garden broken by tree roots etc.
food in the Brothers restaurant was excellent and good value

This property has 2 sites we stayed at the one by the sea
Quinta Penha de Franca Mar
So glad we booked in November to have a room with a Seaview.
The room was very spacious the only issue is that it could with a refurb especial in the bathroom.
However it is still serviceable and we paid a lot less compared to other 4 stars. It is a fab location to explore Funchal & the island.
Breakfast buffet was excellent
Lots of choice & freshly cooked omelette if you wanted
Staff were very friendly & helpful
Overall we had a great week & enjoyed our stay at this hotel

The hotel is very conveniently located around dining options. A bit dated but clean and charming. Staff was very friendly and the breakfast options were great!
5.0
The hotel was situated on the sea front, with amazing uninterrupted sea views. The hotel had a lovely large swimming pool and easy access for those wishing to swim in the sea. The hotel also boasted a wonderful seafood restaurant. It was a flat leisurely stroll along the promenade into Funchal.

Everything was fine. The very loud hammering music from the roof top bar at the hotel Next was annoying.
3.0
The close proximity to the city center. Walkable
Didn't like the Loud Dancing music on two of the six nights I stayed there! Why the loud dancing music appropriate in a Disco or a club not in a quiet garden setting where most of the guests were in their 60's or 70's

Lovely hotel with great views. Staff always prompt to help, specially at the reception!
Will definitely come back.

Hotel is in need of a revamp. Bathrooms and bedrooms are clean but need updating.
Threadbare carpet to stairs. No umbrellas around top pool. Dining/bar areas not particularly inviting, hence Joes bar nearly always empty as cold and uncomfortable.
The old buildings are in need of maintenance and the outdoor seating breakfast/dinner area could do with tidying up, some sort of netted structure over kitchen that looks awful.
Breakfast staff/reception staff dont seem particularly happy and no welcome on arrival or during stay.
Warm breakfast food not inviting, all processed, didnt touch any of hot food all week, just not inviting.
Was probably prestigious in its day but no longer.
Good location but noisy around pool due to building work nearby.

Really nice short break, booked again for next year

Excellent staff, very relaxed atmosphere. Good selection of food for breakfast. Hotel very clean and within walking distance of the old town. The room was spacious but a little sparse, hotel layout quite quirky, lots of different small buildings. Evening meal tasty and liked extra touches, small appetiser and drink were complimentary. Sister hotel whose facilities we could use was over a footbridge across a road and down in a lift, not good if like me you dont like heights. Overall a very good property.

Rarely do I give negative opinions, but it was very disappointing experience.
1) No iron and iron board provided - hotel offers you ironing for a quote of EUR 2,50 per each T-shirt;
2) Cockroaches in the room;
3) Some kind of party (maybe wedding?) and screams nearby during all night Sat-Sun;
4) Breakfast was always late - when we came at 7:30 there was no food provided, the staff was bringing it until 8 am each day;
5) Awful smell in the room, especially from wardrobe
Positives - free, big parking, good location and beautiful view from the pool and from the room as well.

The pool area was beautiful with the easy access to the ocean, and beautiful view. The food at breakfast and restaurant were poor.

The best place I've ever stayed

Wonderful hotel staff. They allowed me early check in without any issues. Hotel and decor is a little dated. But the area is beautiful and quiet. There are many shops and restaurants around. Walking distance to many things.

Service was excellent, amenities were exceptional

Doors on level 0 rooms were not easy to unlock. When unlocking patio doors unable to re lock. Only a plate to put in place it couldn’t be fully opened by an intruder. Higher room would have better of sea views. Lower room you could only see sea standing. We enjoyed our stay.

Lovely to find a traditional property so close to the city centre. Room had an unexpected sea view. Decor was stale and room smelled of smoke but otherwise clean and hotel was lovely
2.5
Wonderful hotel, very quaint, fulfilled my criteria, ‘clean, comfortable and convenient!

Property has 2 locations. My reservation was not described correctly so I was dropped off at the wrong building. It was not convenient to get to the correct location. I would have expected some communication prior to arrival to explain. Shuttle driver indicated that it happens often. A quick email from the property would be extremely helpful.
Other than that, resort was good. I had to ask for my free bottle of wine. It was a very small, one glass size…. I certainly didn’t get a room upgrade. Room was ok, not with the best view.

The hotel is quite tired and needs an upgrade. Generally clean but do have to say on my final morning I came to the restaurant for breakfast and there was an infestation of mosquitoes/flying ants and all the waitress did was sweep them on the floor! A little disappointed

Quinta da Penha Da Franca is exceptional.

We had a brilliant stay for three nights, following a week in a nearby villa. We found it absolutely charming,we had a sea view in the Mar section of the hotel, but we had dinner in the Quinta, which had a wonderful atmosphere, and even attracted customers from the over bearing Savoy! Quirky, lovely surroundings, a bit of old style glamour, very friendly staff. We had a wonderful stay, and would definitely go back.
2.5
The hotel was in an Excellent position which gave us access to all that Funchal has to offer. Breakfast was great with a warm friendly atmosphere aided by excellent service from the staff. Joe’s Cocktail Bar was a particular highlight with it’s wide affordable range and excellent mixology.
2.5
Really nice hotel, centrally located. My room was very big and comfortable. The front desk was amazing. I was leaving at 4:00 am. They made sure that I had a breakfast set the night before.

Hard to give rating b/c Qunita is lovely, clean, brkfst great and close to Old Town but one woman at front desk unfriendly, many times, over 12 day stay when asked directions (later noticed some other guests were given tours of the area - not me, - she only pointed - never did find out how to get to 2nd pool).
An hour after check in, I asked for directions / map to find meeting place for a tour. The map was so tiny, could not read street names. I was alone / 79 / first time in Madeira but she acted as though I should know the places she was talking about. It was raining hard - left knowing direction but not much else. Not many people on the street, most were tourists who couldn't help. Finally, a store clerk helped. The street very steep - sidewalk very slippery - tried to get to road for more traction but slipped twice, 2nd time falling on my wrist - spent 4 hours in hospital, (last place I wanted to be with Covid & after 24 hours of travel) - hospital charge of 300E, 2 taxi charges, meds and a difficult holiday, with only one usable arm - Tourists, at other hotels, were warned about sidewalks. Woman never asked about bandaged arm.
Same women gave wrong walking / public bus directions. I asked for interesting places to walk or take public bus - told her I had done paid tours and wanted to go places on my own. She gave a brochure of guided tours, saying she had no other suggestions. Could say more but out or room.
Others at desk helpful and friendly.

Very british. Very charming. This hotel is typically British. Thick carpets on the floor, windows that open vertically, a very charming bar/pub, and white transparent curtains and a small flat TV-screen that both seems at least 20 years old. But the service from staff is top notch, it is very clean, calm, and very centrally located in a nice area behind the port. nice beds too. The hotel has access to the sea and its sister hotel with a lovely pool next to the sea. We may come back as it is a perfect stay for exploring Madeira, particularly because there was also free and easy parking.

Great location and friendly staff . Great for sea swimming too !

Good points - excellent location very close to the centre of Funchal. Lovely views from room over looking the pool. Pool attendants worked incredibly hard and ensured the pool area was clean and well maintained.
We booked what we thought was the more modern part of the hotel. Whilst it was clean, there were very obvious maintenance issues -ripped wallpaper, faulty drawers off their runners and worn carpets in communal areas. Surprised to be charged for the use of an old rusty safe and to have to use one of my own cards to switch the electric on in the room. Breakfast was more than adequate and was very pleasant to eat outside by the ocean. We went half board mainly to reduce the amount of different restaurant visits during covid. The same menu was presented every night which made the eating experience a bit samey. (you can switch to lunch and this menu offers some different options). The older part of the hotel has charm and the staff are very friendly. Would I stay here again? If the hotel was upgraded/modernised I probably would, but there are currently other hotels that are competing for business (have stayed in some of them so I can compare). Whilst it is quaint, the rooms are tired so you need to bear that in mind so you aren't disappointed on arrival.

Picked hotel as close to Porto Santo ferry but when cancelled and decided to fly, hotel arranged airport transfer. Grounds of hotel are beautiful. Several top restaurants close to hotel, restaurant on site also looked very good. Easy walk anywhere.

Lovely hotel and wonderful staff
