Worse than expected, but there were positive sides as well. The Ático restaurant is good value. The terrace for drinks is nice. However, the bathroom feels a bit cramped. The shower is good. The cleaning service was really slow and without much extras for turn down service. There is no refrigerator in the room. Location is the main plus, even if we would choose another location and hotel on our next trip to Madrid. Service is below what you expect. Another annoying thing is that the pool was closed down already the first week of October.

Our stay at The Principal Hotel in Madrid was disappointing. Though the staff was welcoming at first, the hotel itself fell far short of expectations. We booked a junior suite expecting extra space and quiet, but the room was surprisingly small, and the hotel was very dim with poor lighting. Worst of all, the noise outside was unbearable—people were yelling and drinking late into the night, making it impossible to sleep. This caused us to miss the prepaid breakfast the next morning. When we spoke to the front desk later, the clerk was apologetic and offered to comp our breakfast for the next day and cancel the previous charge. However, the new shift ignored this promise and charged us in full. They were so disorganized that when we asked for our luggage to be brought down (as we had a driver waiting), it was left untouched. After breakfast, we were stuck waiting for an elevator that didn’t work, and the staff offered no help. We had already checked out, so we didn’t have the key needed to access the other elevator, and again, no one assisted us. Despite the high rates, the service and experience were subpar. We had another reservation for the following week but canceled it. The hotel is overpriced, the rooms are small and noisy, and only a few staff members were helpful. They made promises they didn’t keep, and overall, they don’t seem to prioritize their guests. Avoid The Principal Hotel if you have the option.

This was our first stay in Madrid and we absolutely loved this hotel. It was luxury in all the right ways - great service, beautiful rooms, attentive to our needs. The bedroom was larger than most European hotel rooms and the view was beautiful of downtown Madrid. Great central location between the park and the palace! Can't recommend more!

The hotel’s location is very convenient and the restaurant, terrace and lobby area are very nice. Reception staff was great. However the bed (mattress) in our room was very uncomfortable, the shower was clogged and service at the bar and restaurant was extremely slow. We did not feel our stay was at a 5 star hotel for the price we paid.

Centrally located near the Gran Via, the hotel allowed us to see a great deal of Madrid during our two nights in the city. I was disappointed at the small size of our room but I know that’s not unusual for Europe. While the rooftop bar was closed during our stay which was disappointing, there was another terrace at a lower level to have a cocktail or snack while seeing the top of the city.

The hotel was excellent with good but intimate feeling common space. Wonderful staff. Very good dining. They offered car transport which we asked for. However the price was not disclosed resulting in a VERY OVERPRICED transfer from the hotel to the train station. Disappointing really. 65 Euros for a five minute drive.

Staying in this cozy, comfortable, well situated, and very clean hotel was an absolute treat for my 24-year-old daughter and me. The staff truly went out of their way to be sure we were happy and well cared for. In particular, Juan Carlos saw to it that we had whatever we needed and even included some extras to make our stay that much more special. I couldn't recommend The Principal Madrid more highly.

The hotel is beautiful, like a lot of the architecture in Madrid the building is so well kept and characterful. The layout is different, with the reception and spa facilities at the top of the hotel and the rooms below, but it was fine, there are 3 lifts to service guests (as well as stairs). The location couldn't be better, you're right in the heart of a very busy city and a short walk from a wonderful market (Mercado San Antón), as well as being in the heart of Chueca (night life!). The room I opted for (Superior) was spacious, well appointed, with a lovely big open shower and separate WC, climate controls in the room worked very well but being on the 'City View' side meant it could be quite noisy late into the evening and early in the morning (but you soon get used to it). Not the cheapest place to stay but offers are usually available and I would heartily recommend this hotel, with plans being made to visit there again in the new year.
