Great Ryokan at great value

Staff were very friendly and it was like going back in time and experiencing Japan with old skool charm (in a good way). Nothing fancy just plain, simple and very nostalgic. Love it, would definitely return if we’re in the area again.

AMAZING! Such great service and hospitality. Front desk workers are so helpful and kind, considering we don't speak the language. The room was extremely clean and the view was beautiful. They have yukata to wear and tea provided. It is also right next the comerant fishing, so that's why we chose this place. Overall worth it in every way. Thanks for an unforgettable stay!

Truly beautiful hotel! Room was beautiful and spacious, halls were beautifully decorated with china and burning incense, and the onsen facilities were lovely. Meals were also excellent.

I booked a plan with breakfast. The hotel staffs were very friendly and above average. The atmosphere of Inn was very classy traditional Spa(onsen) so I was able to relax.
The Spa was wonderful. I love to come back and hope to rent a bike next time.

Location is good. Clean and spacious room. The onsen is very nice. Food quality has deteriorated from last time we were there. The Hida beef Kaiseki dinner was disappointing.

Right out of the Taxi we were greeted by the staff. They took our luggage and checked us in pretty quickly. It was a nice relaxing stay with a river view. I highly recommend.

Very limited English so expect to need to read all directions. But over all a very nice hotel and spending that extra amount to face the river side is worth it.

nice combination of traditional Japanese hospitality and modern conveniences.

The staff was very attentive and helpful. The larger onsen was clearly designed by someone who enjoys baths, as the sides were designed to be very comfortable for the neck to relax.

Very helpful staff, explained process for onsen, choice of onsen to choose from depending on time, tea available in room.

Friendly staff and nice breakfast and beautiful public bath!

A traditional Japanese inn and onsen which is nevertheless accessible to westerners by the simple addition of beds in otherwise entirely Japanese style rooms. Staff made up for limited English with a warm welcome and helpful approach. The hotel is in an historic street very close to the site of the cormorant fishing. Japanese buffet breakfast was first rate. Having the reception staff assemble outside the hotel to wave goodbye to departing guests was a lovely, and typical, touch.

Completely over priced hotel. I ordered the suite room, and the staff just led me to the standard room. Very disappointed arrangement. Took us long to negotiate and got back the right room.

Very good hospitality by the staff, comfortable room and nice onsen facilities. The hotel is also in a convenient location on the river in a historic part of town and near Gifu park.

Hotel is away from city and has nice comfortable room with great surrounding. Friendly staff and good amenities (ie. Onsen, aromatherapy lamp, lounge). Enjoyed the spa. Dinner was fantastic too. We will be back.

For a hotel that has over 150 years of history, this is very well maintained. Rooms were clean and very comfortable stay. The spring water for the Onsen was exqusite. They had different types of water for help improve skin and aching muscles. I cannot speak enough about their service. My son left his backpack on the bus on the way to the hotel. The staff made multiple calls to help contact the bus company and find the items. Highly recommend this hotel if you are in the area.

Great onsen hotel. It maintains its traditional architecture but the interior looks new and the whole place is kept very clean. There are a few different pools in the onsen which is nice. There is also a small onsen bath tub on the balcony of your room if you choose that room type, a pretty special experience. The set dinner was exquisite and the breakfast buffet was decent. The location is great if you plan to visit the Gifu Castle, you can literally walk to the ropeway station. In terms of down sides, the room is smaller than it seems and it is easy to miss the small road leading to the hotel entrance if driving at night. But these are really negligible issues. Last but not least, great customer service by every staff member we met. They speak English well too.

Being primarily an English speaker, the staff was very helpful and accommodating. Always trying to find a staff that could speak some English to assist me. They also walked me to the bus stop after I had missed the shuttle bus to the JR Station.

We chose this hotel to be close to the Cormorant fishing. The tourist boats leave directly in front of the hotel but the actual fishing happens upstream on the other side of the bridge. If you want to watch the fishing from the shore, walk upstream past the bridge and keep going until you get to a car park. From here you can access the rivers edge. The tourist boats will be lined up in the river so keep walking upstream until you are just in front of the 1st boat. The Cormorant fishing boats start a couple of hundred meters further up so you will get a really good view as they float downstream and approach the tourist boats. I recommend watching from the shore.
The hotel itself was very nice. We were 2 people in a Japanese style room with river view. Supposedly it fits 5 futons which would be a little tight. No blackout curtains and the light streamed in early, so if you are trying to battle jetlag then make sure you bring an eye mask. I found the futon to be comfortable but not the pillow which had some sort of inner rice construction. The staff were extremely welcoming. The English wasn't always the best but they tried and it added to the experience. Breakfast was really, really good. Mostly local food with some western options. We were the only 2 westerners at breakfast. There are local buses departing from the train station which get you close to the hotel. Ask in the tourist info office. The hotel has a free shuttle bus to the train station that departs at 0930.

It was a nice Japanese-style room with a river view. Also, it was such an interesting experience to see cormorant fishing with a dinner box on the boat. You can order this package with the hotel.

The hotel locates near the entrance of 長良川 and the pier and is very convenient.
The hotel was built 150 years ago and is full of its history. I read all the photos and introduction at the corridor outside the banquet hall. It was so interesting.
Breakfast provides more of Japanese dishes. I could still found my favour and got full.
The hot spring pools are just next to the riverside. I enjoyed very much.
Staff are able to speak some English, very polite, friendly and helpful.
I will definitely reserve this hotel again and have no doubt to recommend it to my friends!

We happened upon Gifu as a stop midway on our travels. What a surprise to find some a beautiful hotel in a gorgeous location
The old town is full of history and culture with Gifu castle on the hill top. We took the challenging hike up, but there is a cable car. Well worth the effort
The onsen at the Juhachiro are wonderful. Many different types and a perfect way to relax after our day’s hike.
We hope to return in the summer to see the cormorant fishing nights. Great stopover

What a surprise! We arrived late, unsure that our sat nav was taking us to the right spot. It is a hidden gem. On the riverfront beneath the mountain with the Gifu Castle. Beautiful spot with an amazing choice of onsen

Big modern ryokan but maintain the personal traditional feel of a ryokan. Superb onsen facilities n excellent service displayed by ALL STAFF. Fr greeters at the door, reception, lady who served us the kaiseki dinner, lady who set up our futon bed, onsen staff n staffs at the bfast hall. They were all superb n attentive. Its is located next to Nagara river n walking distance to main tourist spots eg Gifu castle n etc

Amazing ryokan experience at a reasonable price. Was with a Japanese speaker but there was plenty of English language signing and room materials. Lovely neighborhood for a relaxed wander too.
