Staff were very helpful and polite, service was great in reception and also the restaurant. Food was very good, only one criticism of the breakfast, although being served hot (great) the sausage not being a proper butcher sausage was a let down. Not sure why when everything else was perfect that have to resort to cheap sausages. Seems finicky I know but come on make it right.

Looking at the building this was a break of great promise. Unfortunately we were let down on many occasions and will not be staying here again.
First thing to know is parking. Although the hotel has a small car park, they charge £20 a night to park there. The alternative is on street parking - right outside - at a 1/3 of the price. If you download the phone app you can top up remotely.
Check in was OK after we'd found the reception and we attempted to book the restaurant having travelled all day. The restaurant was full that night and the following night by large parties, but we managed to get in on night 3.
The room was quite small and (first bugbear) only one comfy chair, plus the TV faced the bed with no swivel, so you're lying on the bed if you want to watch any TV. Bathroom, well appointed, shower only - -only 2 rooms out of 85 have baths apparently.
Room temperature was another sticking point. The aircon control was locked - no-one ever told us why, so if we were too hot or cold, we had to ring reception to ask them to change it for us - pathetic.
After we'd eaten on the 3rd night, the bill was wrong, I queried this and why we couldn't charge items to the room? Finally we were told that if you book via a 3rd party (Hotels.com), you can't charge to the room. I suggested this was ridiculous whereupon the receptionist snatched the bill out of my hand, took off the service charge (!!) and gave it me back. Fine by me!
Overall, a poor performance, not to be repeated

Customer service and restaurant/ breakfast service were amazing. They really look after you well at this hotel.
Our room was lovely but the windows were high so you couldn’t see out of them. We usually stay at another hotel in Durham when visiting our daughter at uni and always enjoy the stunning views. It’s a shame we couldn’t see out of the windows, otherwise, this would be our new ‘go to’ hotel in Durham.

Lovely old building, I think it might have been the old town hall. Took a while to navigate our way through the building but the rooms were good, interesting building and breakfast was excellent

Hotel Indigo was chosen from many hotels within Durham it looked good on the internet etc etc, I am disabled and need Electric Wheelchair to move Around. We asked of the parking facilities and told that the car park at the rear of the hotel £20 for each 24hrs and first come first served and only 1 space for the disabled.

This is our favourite hotel in the UK/ We always receive a warm welcome. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Lovely comfortable room, tasty breakfast and we like the little cafe next to reception. Only negative on this occasion was the problem with the televisions not working. Management know about the problem and really need to sort this quickly.

I've stayed at this hotel multiple times over the past 2 years as my daughter is at the University in Durham. It's always a genuine pleasure to stay here, but I think this most recent visit was best of all. Lovely room, staff always super friendly, excellent breakfast. Thoroughly recommended.

We have stayed in all other Durham hotels and this was our first time here. Nice, historic property with great rooms and nice touches. Good location in walking distance of everything you want. Gym’ good and bar was good.

Staff were absolutely brilliant great service and polite no matter what the questions were

Sensational throughout, friendly, and on the ball members of staff. Historical building, with architecture that gave me a sore neck from looking up the whole time I was there.
The room was even better than advertised, feeling like a designer home bedroom, I considered either redecorating my house or moving in... permanently. Breakfast was a joy, with a choice of made to order hot food in addition to your traditional buffet, which made everything seem so functional and prepared.
Again for the staff, so helpful and guest focused they were two steps ahead of anything I could have thought of asking.
The bar is lovely, the drinks were great, the coffee shop was so quaint.
The rooms have smart features, with that luxury feel we get from old-money.
I'll be back.

Booked an accessible room ( only coz it was given as an option to have a bigger room when booking). However there were problems..Adjoining doors..could still hear next door ( what they were actually saying). Loud creaks coming from upstairs..told this was from the meeting room in use above.. surely that's poor planning and poor soundproofing . Next option we were given a top room that was so unbearably boiling hot. Not helped by one of the air vents was blocked by a wardrobe under.
Last option.. funny smallish room we accepted. By the evening the room was very dark. Only the lights to the side of the bed were working.
Breakfast next day was over 1/2 hour wait for cooked breakfast ( service got better over the next days).
We told reception of the lighting and when we got back later in the day the light from over the headboard and was fixed to come on along with another added lamp ( much better). A couple of nights in and we only realised there were options for vegetarians for when we asked at the restaurant and were handed the seemingly top secret menu ( so we went there to eat which was nice). app screen details were incorrect. It just felt like there were too many things either badly designed or went unchecked and TBH it felt that though the building has character and staff were really nice they needed to test out the facilities themselves. View to the car park wasn't great and not helped by delivery vans pulling up ☹️.( we felt uncomfortable to mention about more things)

Hotel is really nice, lots of character, so different from many hotel chains that often look the same. Breakfast is excellent; location brilliant; comfortable rooms/beds; excellent shower. The only reason for not giving it 10 out of 10 was the tv in the room kept switching off. You don't watch a lot of tv when you're on a break but when you are watching something, you don't want it switching off every 10 minutes or so. Reported this to reception on checkout.

If you’re visiting York by Rail this is a perfect mix of walkable close to the train station, while a walkable close to the old city, but also shielded from traffic noise, and the sounds of people having a good (but lout) time on the town. To top it all off there’s even a breakfast bar with all sorts of traditional English breakfast fare! This is my second visit and I’ll be back for sure.

Everything was great especially the meal in the restaurant

A major flaw was that the only location in the room with both a mirror and an electric socket for hairdryer use was limited to a 4w desk lamp; unbelievable !
The room was clean and stylish although there was limited clothes storage and the mattress was uncomfortably hard.

Beautiful old building, converted with style into a lovely hotel.
Very friendly staff throughout. Nice cafe situated near reception with good food and very friendly staff.
Great location for a short break in Durham. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed with my wife for our anniversary and was upgraded to a large room. The hotel was lovely inside and the building itself felt grand. It was clean and fresh. Breakfast was cooked with attention to detail. The location was perfect for the centre which was a short 2 min stroll away. Very close to cathedral and river walk/resturants/bars. Car park on site. Highly recommend this place!

Room was in desperate need of updating. Badly chipped furnishings, filthy net curtains and floor. We expected more from a hotel of this price and name

Amazing hotel in an historic building which is beautifully maintained! It is an architectural treasure. It was built in the 19th century as the City Council Chambers and has fabulous stained glass, tilework and woodwork. The dining room is an architect's dream - originally the council chambers. Our room was so incredible, I could have stayed here for months. Restaurant was delicious and the staff in this hotel were very good.
