About this apartment rental
This grand 2800 sq. ft. apartment was home to the original Gundersen clinic, now a nationally recognized healthcare system in the La Crosse community. The building was constructed in 1870 and is on the list of national historic buildings in downtown La Crosse.
Located just steps from the La Crosse Convention Center, shops, and restaurants, the apartment is perfect for a holiday party, wedding party, work retreat, reunion, or other special event. Reach out to discuss your specific interests.
Some highlights include:
- A spacious and fully equipped kitchen including everything you need for a casual evening or a formal sit down dinner.
- Three large bedrooms including a King room with a new ensuite bath, a River room with one queen bed, and the Gundersen room with two queen beds. (The Gundersen room shares a wall with a bar so this room receives loud noise at night.)
- A moody Parlour that’s perfect for celebrating or relaxing contains a 60" smart TV, a chess and checkers pub table, and a vintage bar with barware.
- A wedding room that’s perfect for getting ready for the big event in your life. It’s versatile arrangement allows it to be used as a private office, a place for your morning coffee, or a meditation room.
- A large living room with an original brick fireplace with gas insert.
- Window air conditioner units are located in each bedroom as well as fans throughout.
- Licensed by the city of La Crosse
The apartment is located on the 2nd floor. Guests should be comfortable climbing a flight of stairs to access the apartment.
The apartment is located in the heart of downtown nightlife near many bars and restaurants. On busy nights, the bars are loud and you will hear noise until bar time. If you're looking for a quiet stay, this may not be the best place to stay.
Covered parking can be found within a block at the La Crosse Center Ramp at 201 Jay Street. Parking is paid from 6am-6pm. The cost is $1/hour with a daily maximum of $8. Nights and weekends are free.

We came to visit our son. The VRBO was in a great location to the Riverfest. We enjoyed this festival both Friday and Saturday night. The restaurants and shopping was all close by! The owners have it beautiful decorated and cozy. Thank you!!!

One of the coolest properties we've stayed at. Ton of history, very spacious, clean. Would remmend to anyone needing a place to stay at if visiting LaCrosse

The property is very cool, large, and right downtown. That last part is a double edged sword though because it is right above a bar and can be quite loud at night. The VRBO does come with ear plugs and white noise machines though.

The property was absolutely stunning! Bathrooms and beds were beyond wonderful. The one thing we hadn’t considered with a “great downtown location” was the loud surroundings of the very popular bars. The intense vibration, music, and young bar goers screaming until 230 am made for some not so restful sleep. We visited in April while the windows were still able to be closed. I cannot even imagine when they need to be open in summer time due to lack of air conditioning. The property managers tried to accommodate with sound machines and ear plugs, but it is still quite an adjustment.

We were a party of 5 and all give "The Original" a five star rating. We found the apartment to be extremely clean, well laid out with lots of space and full of small details/treats which made our visit even more comfortable. The location is amazing. As mentioned by the host, it can be noisy at night. Despite the noise, not one of us would change a thing about our stay. The documentation of the history of the apartment and building is fascinating and added an extra dimension to our trip.

A historic property beautifully, tastefully renovated and decorated. Authentic works of art, photos and articles brought the original owners to life. Felt honored to stay as a guest.
Great location. Walkable to everything.

Beautiful apartment!! I stayed with 3 of my friends (all late 30’s) and found the property to be beautiful with tons of interesting history. I enjoyed the little touches of the background story of the building that were located throughout the apartment. Entry was easy and we felt safe and secure the whole time . It did get very loud late at night/early morning with the bar crowd.. this was mentioned in the listing and all rooms were appointed noise machines, which were helpful. Much to be expected being located downtown. My friends and I easily walked everywhere we wanted to go. I loved this beautiful apartment and would love to visit again. We all marveled over the decor and rich colors. The owner should be very proud!

Was perfect for what we needed which was a large place close to the La Crosse center. The apartment is absolutely gorgeous!

This location is ideal if you are attending a trade show at the convention center. Noise from the main street at bar time can be a bit distracting, but the property is delightful.

Really classy apartment perfect for a family or group. Three individual bedrooms (one with own bath, two share bath at other end of apartment), large great room in center of apartment, opening up to beautiful kitchen, entertainment room, and study. Great history too. In the heart of downtown La Crosse so very short walk to all downtown shops, La Crosse Center, waterfront, etc.
Only downside is that this location is also the heart of college partying at night. The bars/dancing is open until 2 am, so (as the listing correctly states) it is quite loud for sleeping from ~10 pm through ~2:30 am. Not just regular pub-type bar noise but college dance club-type noise with bass, etc.
Overall great place to stay for the historic, classy, spacious, open-floor-plan apartment if you are OK with the noise at night.

This place was amazing! Great location and a lot bigger than expected. Would easily stay again!

We loved The Original. Perfect location. Walk to everything. Beautiful and unique building.
Street noise is pretty loud until 2am. However, it was St. Patrick's Day, so should have guessed it would be louder than normal.
I would still definitely stay again.

Enjoyed our stay with a group of friends/parents to visit our college kids that attend UW-L and to attend the High School State Dance Competition at the LaCrosse Center along with a UW-L basketball game. Location was perfect-a block away from the LaCrosse Center and right downtown near many restaurants, bars and businesses. As stated in the description the streets are bustling with people, noise and traffic into the early hours of the morning. Q’Doba is directly under 2 of the bedrooms and they stay open til 2-3am. We didn’t find this to be too much of a problem as we were up/out late hanging out with our kids and had no problem falling asleep even with the noise. They also had ear plugs provided in the bedrooms if needed. It is a great place to stay if you like being in the heart of all the action but wouldn’t recommend it if your wanting a quiet getaway. As far as the VRBO goes it was a very historical building filled with character and decorated perfectly, very charming. It had everything our group needed to have a great weekend with our kids. There is a large flight of stairs that you need to climb to get into the VRBO so lugging all our stuff for the weekend up the stairs was a workout! The check in process was easy and we had great communication with the owner/host. Although there was no on site parking it was easy to find parking as there is a parking ramp a 1/2 block away and it was free to park for the weekend. We will definitely consider staying here again!
