About this villa rental
The Frantoio is an ancient olive mill, situated on a sunny hillside in a private 9 acre olive estate in Tuscany. In 2015, The Frantoio was fully converted and refurbished into a luxury property which now hosts guests and annual retreats. Beautifully furnished and well appointed throughout, the interiors have been carefully chosen to complement the building and yet are contemporary, chic and stylish. Air-conditioning throughout, central heating, Sonos music system, Sky TV and strong wi-fi.
Until the late 1960's the Frantoio was a working olive estate and mill, employing many local villagers.
The bedrooms are all light and spacious; our Egyptian bed linens, feather mattress toppers and comfortable pocket spring mattresses ensure a luxuriously comfortable sleep.
Other rooms include a study with screen to plug in your laptop, two private living rooms for bedrooms, a wine cellar, dining room and laundry room (with a Miele washing machine and tumble dryer).
The property has two large well equipped kitchens with doors leading onto dining terraces. Both have American style fridge freezers, dishwashers, hobs and high quality kitchen equipment. The main kitchen has two double steam Miele ovens, a Nespresso coffee machine, Bialetti Moka, an American filter coffee machine, Bialetti French coffee press, electric kettle and large toaster. All store cupboard essentials are supplied. The main kitchen has been architecturally designed as a chefs 'teaching kitchen' with chestnut beams, handmade chestnut kitchen units and large table, a Carrara marble sink and a stainless steel work surface.
The Tuscan summer kitchen is perfectly situated for the pool area and includes a dining area, antique stone sink, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine, Smeg fridge/freezer, 5 burner hob and dishwasher. It is an ideal place to enjoy a light lunch or to prepare light meals for the pool and garden terrace.
There are several dining areas throughout the property to choose from.
The stunning 10mtr x 6 mtr swimming pool with feature shallow pool surround is perfect for young children and has been created in the shape of the original mill pond.
Walks through surrounding olive groves and woodland to local villages (Castelvecchio di Compito 2km and Buti a hilly 7km) on trails from the doorstep of the property. Many good local restaurants which we can recommend and arrange a booking.
Walking and mountain bike trails from the property, Bientina our nearest large town (5km) has an Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts, shops of all types, cafes, Coop supermarket, restaurants and pizzerias. Buti (7 km) by woodland trail or 10 mins by car has restaurants, cafes and shops, Castelvecchio di Compito lower village (25 mins by woodland walk or 5 min short drive by car has a bar and restaurant, Lucca (20 mins by car) has every amenity, Pontedera (12k) a large working town is the nearest train station for travel to Pisa (20 mins) or Florence (45mins).

Excellent location in Tuscany near Lucca. Villa is very well maintained and equipped to create a wonderful vacation experience!

A family holiday for 8 booked originally in 2019 and carried forward because of Covid. So delighted that we did as we had an absolutely fabulous time in fantastic surroundings. The villa is large, comfortable and extremely well equipped with typically glorious Tuscan views. Great swimming pool and plenty of places to sit and eat.
Great communication with the owner and the housekeeper couldn’t have been more helpful.

We enjoyed an amazing stay for a week in this incredible Villa. The Villa is finished to a very high standard and how wonderful to have the olive oil presses still in place. We were a party of 10 and we easily fitted in this Villa with plenty of space to spare. Sitting outside on the Veranda was a dream - we loved watching the sparking lights of the surrounding towns. The pool is superb and really interesting being formed in the old mill pond. This Villa is a dream and we hope to return.
The hairpin bends to access the Villa were no problem and there was plenty of extra space on each bend to help with the turn. We even managed to get our Mercedes Viano (Van) up and down the hairpins. Also, there are mosquitos, as in most of the countryside of Italy; they are not a problem, just lather up with insect repellent, The Villa has gauze on the windows to "encourage" the mosquitos not to enter the Villa.
Finally, it is well worth mentioning the very efficient air conditioning. The whole house was comfortable at all times.
We felt incredibly welcome in this super Villa which is clearly loved by Emma and Damian.
Emma, the (very lucky) Owner of this amazing Villa, provided fabulous communication and managed to get us a booking at Da Benitos in Orentano. The food is fabulous. There is no menu, just classic, wonderful Italian food for Italians. Damian, the Property Manager, was incredibly helpful especially with helping us to find the Villa in the first place and also sorting out problems with the gas (now all fixed). Tastemotions (Valentino & Larisa, the caterers) are incredible; they provided what was surely a Michelin starred meal with attentive, friendly service. Their meal will be a family memory forever - as will be our stay in this dream Villa.
Grazie Mille, Emma, Damian and All

As part of the family vacation, we had a great time in the lovingly renovated olive mill. The house and the complex leave nothing to be desired, we all felt very comfortable. The contact with the owner Emma and the manager Damian was very cordial, questions or problems were taken care of immediately. A wonderful holiday, we'll be back.

The setting of the villa is spectacular, overlooking the Tuscan valley. Sitting at the pool, you can see for miles and there is a great hike right outside the villa to the next town, high up on a hilltop. The rooms are all gracious, with comfortable beds and en suite bathrooms. Each room has a great view out the window. There are a lot of stairs in case that is an issue for people. The kitchen and outdoor seating areas were large enough to accommodate our group of 9. Communication with the owner and caregiver was easy. They both helped a lot with making reservations, setting up excursions and navigating challenges that popped up during the week. They made the whole experience so much better.

Our group of 12 friends and family just wrapped up our week at the Frantoio. Plain and simple, the villa was superb. Spacious and comfortable bedrooms were matched by beautiful common space. Both inside and out. Sites such as Siena, Lucca and Cinque Terre were all just a short drive away. To make matters even better, Linda and George Rough were warm, welcoming and helpful property managers. They recommended a local husband and wife cooking team, Tastemotion, who prepares incredible dinners for our group. It was an affordable luxury that made all the difference in the world . It’s hard to imagine that we will not choose to return to the Frantoio.

We had an amazing time at this beautiful house. It was perfect and had everything we wanted. Plan to definitely go back. The owners were so helpful and caring. Everyone had a wonderful time.

We booked the Frantoio for our 50th wedding anniversary celebration with our children and grandchildren. We couldn't have chosen a better place. It is spacious and comfortable, with plenty of "meeting" places for little chats private drinks, etc., as families do!
The swimming pool was a terrific hit with all of us. Clean and well maintained, it was one of the highlights of our stay.
The other "luxury" that was recommended and was worth splashing out for, was having Valentino and Larissa (recommended by Linda and George) come to cook dinners for us. Valentino is a great and inventive chef, and Larissa the most charming hostess. Excellent!
Finally, and very importantly, the property managers, Linda and George. They greeted and made us feel so welcome, were available any time we needed them, and were great and amusing company when they popped in to enjoy a glass of wine with us. It all helped to make our special holiday a very relaxing, enjoyable and memorable time.
Thank you

The property looked amazing on the listing and it didn’t disappoint. Rooms were airy and spacious, beds super comfy, multiple kitchens that were very well equipped but the best thing was definitely the pool. All three generations were in the pool at least twice a day. George and Linda were excellent hosts and provided us with great ideas and useful info for our holiday. They had recommended Tastemotions (Larisa and Valentino) for coming to the villa to cook a meal for us. They came twice to cook for us and they were so delicious. We also went on a vine tour with Larisa which was fantastic, Larisa was a wonderful host.
Shame it was only a week but would definitely be back in a heartbeat. Thank you George and Linda.

We stayed for a week in June with 3 adults and two toddlers and had an excellent time at the villa. Linda and George who live up the hill and manage the property could not be more helpful, friendly, and accommodating. All of their recommendations were excellent and they immediately answered any questions we had and resolved any issues we encountered during our stay.
The home can be a little tricky to find, but once you know what to look for, it's easy. There isn't a ton of flat lawn, so there are less areas for toddlers to play outside, but the pool area is amazing and our kids had a great time playing in the living room.
The villa balances elements of the historical olive mill with modern fixtures and amenities. The layout, with multiple suites, is perfect for a family reunion or large group.
Thanks for a wonderful stay!

First and foremost, Linda and George were great hosts. They were helpful pre-arrival with setting up dinner at the home the day of arrival and with day trip ideas. And while we were there, they were incredible in assisting in every way including last minute help!
And they are lovely people! We enjoyed many glasses of wine with them.
The home is hard to describe until you are there.
You felt you had great privacy in all bedrooms as the home is large. The rooms were extremely comfortable and kitchen and outdoor eating areas very nice.
This ideal home for couples or family trip.
The home also has a wine cellar.
The property is atop a hill with breathtaking views.
The pool area is very relaxing with comfortable chairs and again great views.
All in all - great experience for the week and would go back in a heartbeat!

We booked The Frantoio for our family of 8 and wanted everyone to have ample space to allow for time alone but also great group areas where we could hang out together or in smaller groups given that we had a diverse crew. We were also looking for luxury in terms of accommodation, location and not having to worry about anything but just getting there. The Frantoio did not disappoint and the hosts, LInda and George, were fabulous. The property has been recently renovated in a style we very much appreciated--all the modern amenities with a Tuscan feel and lovely grounds. Everything has been thought through at this property in incredible detail which made for a seamless guest experience. The pool is wonderful with a gorgeous view and there are plenty of comfortable chairs and umbrellas. We really didn't lack for anything. George and Linda were always available with information, had a welcome basket with enough to get us through dinner and breakfast. This was a nice touch and very much appreciated after a 6 hour drive.
I highly recommend bringing in Valentino and Larissa from Tastemotion for a cooking lesson and dinner. We had four children and four adults and had one of the most enjoyable evenings of our vacation making pasta from scratch. They are a lot of fun, knew how to work with kids and adults in a great atmosphere.
We rent a lot of vacation properties and this was, by far, our best experience. All eight of us in the group wouldn't hesitate to go back.
One thing to note for tentative drivers. The road up to the Frantoio is a little precarious. By the end of the week, we had mastered it but it might be a concern for some. The Frantoio's road itself is nicely paved but watch out for the drainage areas where slow driving is necessary.
A very big thank you to Linda and George. You do a fantastic job!!

We stayed at the beautiful Frantoio for 4 days at the end of June 2016. The Villa was much bigger than we expected and accommodated two families with ease. It is very well equipped and in a beautiful location at the top of the hill. The pool is on the upper level and boasts spectacular views over the Tuscan country side. We found the location close enough for day trips and would recommend a visit to Lucca. I have to mention that the beds were exceptional i.e. so comfortable with top of the range linen and comfy pillows. We arrived the evening of my husbands birthday and our hosts, Linda and George had very kindly assisted in arranging for a private chef and his wife to prepare a birthday dinner. This was a real treat and a superb evening. Nothing was to much trouble for the hosts who gave us lots of tips about the surrounding area. We loved it so much we wished we had booked it for longer. We will be back! Thank you so much for our time in this fabulous Villa.

The old olive mill, set amongst the groves is a very impressive building. It is a lovely and sympathetic conversion. Linda and George, the managers , welcomed us to the area and were on hand to answer questions and give information such as towns to visit e.g Lucca Monte Carlo, and Barga, and restaurants to use, of which there were many - both rustic and fine dining. The property was immaculate, tastefully furnished and extremely well maintained. Our family found it an exciting but restful holiday house.

We had a terrific week at the Frantoio. This villa is more beautiful than its pictures. The view is spectacular. The villa itself is wonderful and very well-equipped. Each room is very comfortable and has everything that you may need. We would begin sight-seeing in the morning and couldn't wait to get back to the Frantoio to spend the warm afternoon in the pool. We had teenagers with us and the amenities were just what we needed for them. We had some travel snafus early in our trip and George and Linda were so accommodating and helpful. It was a pleasure meeting them. Their suggestion to hire a chef for in-villa dining with the chef from Tastemotions was one of the best things that we did. Thank you so much, George and Linda for making our trip so wonderful! We hope to be back someday soon to the Frantoio!

The Frantoio is an excellent place to stay with your family, the layout of the house means that it is possible for people of all ages to stay together without being on top of one another. The beds are wonderfully comfortable and the bedroom suites are large and airy. The bathrooms are luxurious and the feature baths are amazing. The house was spotlessly clean and the furniture and decoration gave the whole place an uncluttered but comfortable feel. The pool area is fantastic, we loved the shallow surround which was ideal for the children, the garden is well tended and the view is lovely. We had relaxed evenings on the terrace eating bbq's or cooking up wonderful pasta dishes in the fully equipped kitchen and enjoying local wines, cheeses and bread.
George and Linda were great hosts, they were very helpful and informative about the local area without being intrusive, they suggested areas to explore and the locations of the necessary supermarkets and restaurants. I thoroughly recommend this property.

Just back from a wonderful week at The Frantoio. Having a love of Italy, and had seen their outstanding website we weren't in the least disappointed on arriving. In fact the place lives up to its description, and more. George & Linda, who look after the house, were excellent at suggesting places to visit and giving us directions to all the best local restaurants. Not that we strayed far from the house, as the pool was hard to leave. The well equipped kitchen allowed us to eat in on occasions, and being an old Olive Mill we even came away with a bottle their very own virgin olive oil. Go to Italy. Go to The Frantoio.

This home was beyond any expectations we had. The property is amazing, the hosts (Linda and George) were so helpful and just lovely, the furnishings were perfect and the grounds were from a dream. Everything we needed was here, from perfect bed linens to a beautifully equipped kitchen. It was so nice we didn't want to leave for touring. Already trying to plan our next trip to this little slice of heaven.

Il Frantoio provided us with a superb holiday break albeit too short to fully enjoy all this property and the managers George and Linda have to offer to enhance any break in this hidden gem of Tuscany.
This superbly converted historically important olive mill has it all including air-conditioned bedrooms each with their own beautiful views which provided the best start to our days. We very much enjoyed cooking in the exceptionally well appointed kitchen which made our meals prepared from local acquired produce a highlight of our stay especially when sitting out on the terrace. In fact the high quality furnishings throughout made relaxing far too easy and during the heat of the day the many different rooms provided quiet escape.
Our girls (9 and 5) couldn't wait to swim in the pool everyday in fact it was hard to get them out! We enjoyed relaxing poolside and made use of all the summer kitchen had to offer to ensure lunch made the most of the Tuscan garden and ancient olive tree surroundings.
What surprised us was just how close we were to the elegant city of Lucca, a walk along the ancient walls is a must, Pisa was only 30 minutes away, no trip is complete without visiting the Campo Dei Miracoli and Florence was a short train journey away. On top of that local vineyards, the hills of Barga and beyond are just an hour or so drive.
We certainly crammed a lot into a few short days thanks to the knowledge of George and Linda who made our stay such a pleasure.
The Frantoio was a true luxury break and we would recommend to any family or larger group looking for that somewhere special. We certainly look forward to returning!

We arrived at the Frantoio mid July to glorious warm Tuscan weather and had nearly two weeks of sunshine fuelled relaxation.
In a nutshell my wife, both older children (21 and 23) who visited for 5 of the days, and the younger kids (8 and 10) would all go back and have another holiday based at the Frantoio.
Highlights - lounging around the glorious pool taking in the views and snacking on all the fresh Tuscan produce; barbecues around the Frantoio in the evening ; wandering in and around the olive groves; early morning runs via the hilltop village and back via the local bread shop; meals out in Butti, Lucca, Montecarlo, Pisa, Viareggio + Tiga !, and many more which I can't put a name too...
Visits and purchases from local vineyards; my daughters trip to see friends in Bologna; shopping at the designer clothes outlet near Florence....
The rooms and interiors are stunning and we are considering a winter or spring tip to the Frantoio.

We arrived at the Frantoio after a fraught 12 hour drive, in the near dark. Suffice it to say that the drive up the hillside was a wee bit daunting at that point so my good fairy appeared in the form of George who brought my car up & parked it!
Darkness didn't do the views justice, but George & Linda certainly did - our beautiful luxurious apartment came fully equipped with anti mozzie spray and a basket of homegrown veggies from Giorgio's Orto for us veggie girls. Not to mention the stock of DVDs to keep my daughter occupied while I was out at Italian school in the mornings!
The apartment was more than we could have hoped for, tastefully and practically appointed, and we particularly enjoyed our private wee terrace overlooking the pool with the abundant supply of fresh herbs.
As well as the wonderful welcome from George & Linda, we were fortunate in our fellow guests ( Chris, Rachel & family in our first week, then David, Maria,et al in the second, plus Kim, Pia and Wanda & their parents/in-laws with whom we enjoyed a memorable last nights' sing song.
I was within easy striking distance of my language classes, and the beautiful city of Lucca where we spent many a happy afternoon. Lucca also boasts a surprising number of vegan eateries - Nanda's, plus Felice near the Lucca Italian School, to name but two.The house is also well situated for Pisa, and even the coast was an easy drive.
I also enjoyed the strolls up to Castelvecchio in the evening, and observing authentic Italian village life there - no tourists, no shops, not even a bar, but always a " Buona sera" as you pass by!
We could have been much more " culturally active" but somehow the place just lends itself to winding down and "farniente".Which is very valuable too! And the oil is fabulous...

The highlight of our 2 weeks in Italy. A beautiful place amidst acres of olive trees in the hills 20 minutes south-east of Lucca. George and Linda, our hosts, could not have been more gracious and accommodating. The Leccino apartment has it's own terrace area for quiet dinners outside. The kitchen is well equipped and modern.
The location is perfect for day trips and set in a quiet rural area still close to restaurants and grocery stores. Lucca is 20 minutes north while Pisa is an easy 50 minutes west. The train to Florence is easy to get every hour from Pontedera a short 15 minute drive south.
A stunning location. Fantastic hosts. A beautiful apartment. Many thanks to George and Linda for a truly wonderful holiday.

I have been suffering with significant withdrawal symptoms today following the last 2 weeks in Italy at The Frantoio. We chose the apartment, as one of two choices, as somewhere near Lucca! I had no idea where the apartment was, but had always wanted to visit Lucca, so originally sent two emails to 2 different owners/managers, I only heard back from one, Norma, at Dunbar Travel, and I am so incredibly glad that I did. From the moment she contacted me it was clear that there was something very special about the Frantoio.
Norma and her sister Linda, who hosts (with George - more about him later) have a real knowledge and passion for this corner of Tuscany and the booking information and organisation was excellent. Linda was there to meet us on arrival and the warmth of the meeting reflected the next two weeks!
The apartment, Maurino, was simply furnished, but had everything needed for our family of 4 and 5 for one week! The bedrooms, although not air conditioned, were cooled by the shutters and there were plenty of fans! Space outdoors provided opportunities to eat as a family, explore the olive trees and for the children to play. The new pool will be a fabulous addition to the apartments/house, but for our younger children the small pool was sufficient and they had a ball, playing, doing gymnastics and staying cool. The pool was well maintained and the views across the plains were quite stunning.
The setting for the Frantoio is outstanding, the driveway is challenging at first, but gets easier with practice! However, the reward is the view across the plain. We didn't eat out much, despite the great recommendations, taking advantage of the wonderful weather, local produce and a view that meant we didn't miss TV or the internet once: we are from Norfolk, the internet is always awful here, "roaming" was used!
And so to George and of course Linda...what incredible hosts. Our holiday was completely enhanced by their presence and their tolerance and affection shown to our little girls and to all the children in the Frantoio over the fortnight. They could be relied upon to help at any time of the day and night! Our holiday became a small slice of life in an Italian olive grove, the children "helped" with small tasks, rode in the Ape, chatted non stop with George. The smallest things, like setting up a DVD player on a rainy day, showed that they spent the whole time thinking about the guests and that is what truly made the holiday!
