About the Neighborhood
Before being settled, the land that is now Berwyn was traversed by Native American trails. The most important trails converged near the Chicago portage, and two notable routes crossed what is today Berwyn. A branch of the Trail to Green Bay crossed Berwyn at what is now Riverside Drive, and the Ottawa Trail spanned the southern end of the city.
In 1846, the first land in "Berwyn" was deeded to Theodore Doty, who built the 8-foot-wide (2.4 m) Plank Road from Chicago to Ottawa along the Ottawa Trail. The trail had been used as a French and Indian trade route and more recently as a stagecoach route to Lisle. This thoroughfare became what is now Ogden Avenue in South Berwyn.
Berwyn, a suburb about 11 miles west of Chicago, has the most sizable collection of Chicago-style bungalows in the country. “Chicago-style” means distinct features—they’re brick bungalows, rise up 1.5 stories above a basement, and have low-pitched roofs with overhangs. Typically, Chicago-style bungalows
• Measure approximately 1200 sq ft,
• Have generously large windows, which are sometimes stained glass, to let in as much light as possible
• Many have front steps leading up to a porch; others have an enclosed front room, with steps leading up the side of the house
• Compared to the Victorian homes they replaced, the floor plans, living rooms and dining rooms are more open and airy.
Berwyn’s bungalow district boasts approximately 1,300 single-family bungalows, over 1,000 of which are Chicago-style. Because most of these bungalows were built in the 1920s and 1930s when Chicago’s population was booming, the area earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
Ogden Avenue is part of the "Historic Route 66" in Berwyn, and an annual Vintage Car Show has taken place in the city every year in early September since 1990. Ogden Avenue is closed to traffic from Ridgeland to Oak Park Avenue, and hundreds of car enthusiasts come out to celebrate the spirit of Route 66. In 2006, Berwyn began to host its annual art car parade called Cartopia. Art car artists from all over the country meet to show off their latest creations and then parade through the neighborhood.
Getting around
There is free street parking out front. You can walk, Uber or bus to just about any of the main attractions as this home is less than 12 miles from Downtown.
