The Battery sits on the entrance to the harbour, on the slopes of Signal Hill. It is sometimes described as an outport within the city of St. John's and is noted for its steep slopes, and colourful houses. The Battery has been the site, over the centuries, for gun emplacements (batteries), such as Fort Waldegrave, for the defence of St. John's Harbour, including during both World Wars. It is home to Chain Rock, a land outcropping to which a large chain was attached connecting to Fort Amherst, since as early as 1770, to prevent the entry of enemy ships into St John's harbour. Chain Rock is one of two rocks located on opposite sides of the Narrows, the aptly named entrance to the harbour; Pancake Rock is on the opposite shore. The space between the two rocks is 174 metres. A defensive chain was stretched between the rocks by means of a capstan at nightfall. During World War I and II the chain was replaced with anti-submarine nets.
There is free street parking and there is a parking space directly across the street without fail for 30 years according to the previous owner.

When spending over $400 US per night one expects a bit more than this place. Broken faucets, a bathroom sink that doesn't drain, broken shades (making it hard to enjoy the view), broken shower fixture, a toilet that runs. The place felt generally unloved. More suitable for college students than grownups. And the photos online are designed to make it look twice the size. It's actually a bit claustrophobic. Online it tells you average price is $196 per night. When booking it turns into over $400. Think twice! You'll also find the all night ship engines and lights less than relaxing.

We loved staying at the battery cottage. It was exactly as described. So close to do the signal hill hike every day, and walkable to downtown. Would definitely stay here again.

Our hosts were extremely helpful and timely with communication. We loved being in the heart of downtown st. John’s. Would stay here again!

I got exactly what I was expecting from this property, something that had a scenic view that was within walking distance of downtown.
What I had not expected was the noise associated with the working docks and I was awoken by 7 am by all the noise every morning.
The south-facing blinds were useless in the main bedroom and the living room. This meant that there was nothing to create some privacy or to block the early light - and more importantly - the flood lights from the ships docked 24 hours a day. My sleep was very disrupted by the light and the noise.
My trip was delayed by two days due to a major snowstorm (as happens in St. John's in February) and there was no flexibility to push back my reservation or cancel those two days. So, I ended up paying for two days I couldn't use. I was disappointed by that, even though it respected the letter of our reservation.
Although the view and the house were exactly what I wanted, the sound and light pollution from the harbour and the lack of flexibility by the host mean that I am unsure if I would rent here again.

Stayed here for a relaxing few nights. Loved the cute cottage asthetic and views of the harbour. The free-standing bathtub was a highlight.
