The Neighborhood:
Close to Richmond, Williamsburg, and Washington, D.C. yet tucked into a cove on a quiet river in the small town of Lancaster, Virginia, this Northern Neck (NNK) vacation river rental is the perfect place for gathering family or friends. It is situated at the end of a quiet country lane with only two other homes in sight. The NNK is a peninsula surrounded by unique and beautiful marshes, creeks, the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay. The lesser known Corrotoman River, on which this beautiful property sits, is a river of many creeks off the Rapp’s northern shore about 11 miles in from its mouth.
You’ll find lots of opportunities to explore, and to get out on the water. Launch complimentary kayaks and paddle boards from the water's edge and explore the quiet waterways. Or bring your boat! Tie up on our dock; our MLW is 4-5 feet!
Farther afield, we highly recommend a sailing charter (in season March 1 to November 30) or a power boat charter.
OUT AND ABOUT: Our favorite beach is Hughlett Point Nature Preserve on the Chesapeake in Kilmarnock. In the off-season it is private and stunning. In the summer months, go early as there is only room for 11 cars and no parking on the road, or head over to The Tides Inn in Irvington, an iconic 4 star resort friendly to non-guests. Walk the lovely grounds and check out the boardwalk on Carters Creek. Go early and watch the crab boats come in. Many of the amenities are available to non-resort guests, such as the Chesapeake Restaurant and Terrace, or the Fish Hawk, a casual creekside restaurant and bar with a fun vibe.
Book a sail or a powerboat cruise with one of our partners and get a 10% discount! Come fall in love with Virginia's River Realm!
When you’re ready to explore the area more fully, you will be surprised that this quaint rural area offers many gastronomical and cultural opportunities. Fine dining at Adrift in White Stone- a restaurant owned and operated by a local trained at the Inn at Little Washington - is not to be missed. Also visit the Rappahannock Art League in Kilmarnock, or take in a show at the Lancaster Playhouse, pick up farm fresh items at local farmers’ markets and small shops, and grab some house made donuts at Chesapeake Donut Shop in White Stone. Explore charming Irvington town with quaint shops and delicious restaurants like The Office, Dredge, and Vine, a lovely wine bar with outdoor gas fire pits.
For rainy days, head over to Compass Entertainment in Irvington. This amusement center has indoor games, putt-putt, a climbing wall, a movie theater, bar, and restaurant. Kids of all ages love it!
You may also enjoy exploring the Northern Neck and its many organized "Trails", such as the Oyster Trail, the Wine Trail, the Water Trail, the Artisan Trail and, not to be outdone, the Coastal
Waterfowl Trail. There you “will be rewarded with opportunities to experience songbirds, waterfowl, wading birds, bald eagles, stunning vistas, and breath-taking butterflies. " Just a short list of the many things to do and see in the Northern Neck. So, relax here- where you are more likely to rub elbows with oystermen and artists than lawyers and lobbyists. Hyacinth beckons you to slow down, breathe the salt air, and live life like a local. You may even decide to become one.
"The drive through the Northern Neck leaves one with the impression of traveling back in time, when life moved at a livable pace rather than a breakneck gallop.” (from VA Dept. of Natural Resources).
Getting Around:
You will need a car, but you can get around by boat and kayak too! Our MLW is three feet; you can put in at Yankee Point Marina! They have a great set up there; just $5-10 to launch and you can leave your trailer. They also have a small grill and a restaurant. Very friendly. And lots of fun activities during the summer so you can motor back over for some fun music, etc.
Other Things to Note:
Remi the neighbor Al's dog! He's a big lovable Chocolate Lab who will wander over and say hello. He has a loud bark but is super friendly! Al may say hi too!
The river is brackish, meaning some salt water exists. Many people like to swim in the river, but there is also the option of swimming in the Chesapeake Bay at Hughlett Nature Preserve in nearby Kilmarnock. In the warmer months there may be jellyfish in the water.
We warmly welcome dogs to our space. Please note there is a $25 per pet per night fee. Thanks!
The house is located in a natural & wooded area, so you may see & hear bugs, furry critters of all sizes (including but not limited to deer, squirrels, and rodents), & reptiles.
