We absolutely loved sitting on our balcony throughout our stay. It was definitely the highlight of this room, with stunning views and peaceful breezes (except the crowing roosters).
The location of this property gave us easy access to everything we wanted to do in the Hilo area, which was a big plus.
The price was more than reasonable and the hosts were helpful. The only downside was substandard pillows and a hard bed (which someone else might not mind, but I found uncomfortable).
All in all, I would recommend this location.

My wife and I spent one night at Hilltop as part of our 4 day trip to the BI. We stayed in the largest king bedroom . The house itself is impressive, especially the exterior and grounds and it is well located near downtown Hilo. I recommend you ask the owner to turn on the air conditioner at least 2-3 hours before arriving. We arrived to a sweltering bedroom. The only TV was in the downstairs shared common area which has no AC. And as others have noted, parking is a problem in a small driveway area. Expect to hear several roosters crowing right outside the bathroom window throughout the night. And don’t expect plush, fresh smelling hotel quality bathroom towels. At least that is not we were provided. Hilltop was ok for a one night stay, but I can’t recommend an extended stay here unless the owners make some improvements.

Very comfortable bed and air conditioning when needed made room easy to have a good temperature for sleeping. Beautiful lanai and living area. Water pressure could be better and it varied during the stay. It’s the only thing that could improve. The rooster was a very good alarm for us because we did need to get up early, but for people who needed to sleep in, may be problematic. Really easy check in and check out with good security system.

The check in process was ok. The living room of the house and the front yard are stunningly beautiful. However once we got to our rooms we were kind of disappointed. It seemed like maximal effort was put into the first floor of the house but a bare minimal effort was put into the room. The bathroom walls were unfinished and the water pressure of the shower very low, the faucet was loose and barely hanging. The bed was too soft and uncomfortable that my spouse and I had a hard time sleeping. I have to give the hosts a point for providing earplugs though because the wild life is very loud in the morning when you're still trying to sleep. If only the interior of the room matched the living room. A pity! Location is great though.

We loved our 7-night stay at Hilltop vacation rental! We had the economy room with a view of the ocean and it was very cool to wake up to the sun rising. The room was clean, there was a shower and bathroom and all of the necessary essentials for our stay—coffee maker, small fridge, etc…The parking was a bit tight, but our rental Jeep fit into the parking spots! It was a quiet and peaceful stay. Would definitely recommend!

Enjoyed our stay but did not like the lack of TV. Screencasting was the only option. Nearby roosters start crowing early am.

Place was more than we ever thought. Super clean, super cool. No lobby, self checkin. Pool table in great room. Just a really cool exercise experience. My wife was apprehensive as she likes traditional hotel, but even she was over the top

We had an relaxing one-night stay at the hilltop retreat! The host was incredibly kind and accommodating, making sure every aspect of our experience was top-notch. The ocean views were breathtaking, and the sounds of the tropical rain throughout the night created a magical ambiance. The king bed was super comfortable, and I loved the creative floor plan of the unit—it added a unique charm to the whole experience. Five stars all the way for this charming and relaxing getaway!

The home was once beautiful, a Bauhaus style architecture where a portion of the house was turned into nightly rentals. The view is gorgeous and gardens still show the original style.
Although improvements were made in our bathroom, the suite was basic and could use some updating, as well as the large living room available to guests.

Great place to stay in Hilo, cozy and quiet and yet still right off a main road down to Kamehameha avenue. Would highly recommend to anyone, though do note that parking is extremely tight.

A unique property with a view over the bay. I believe there are only 4 rooms, all on the second floor with good views. Checkin and checkout are self-service. You will receive access codes via text message, and you may not see another living soul. Expect to be quiet after 9pm. Nice place, would stay again.

The property is very pleasant, including not only the home, but the surroundings. The large backyard is very peaceful, and the three chickens are a nice addition. The views from the property (and from our room #1) are spectacular.
Parking requires a little maneuvering, but it wasn't a problem. Also, stone stairway to the house, and stairs inside the house to the rooms upstairs, could be difficult for anyone with limited mobility.
I highly recommend this facility if you want a quiet room and an "old Hawaii" experience.
