About this house rental
Georgian grade II listed terraced town house located within the Elizabethan ramparts in historic Berwick upon Tweed; England's most northerly coastal town, which has changed hands between England and Scotland 13 times. Visit Berwick and discover what was worth fighting for. The town boasts magnificent views over the Northumberland coast. Many walks start from the doorstep, along the preserved town walls, the coastal path to St Abbs, or beside the river, spotting seals by the town's three bridges. Berwick's narrow streets are filled with individual restaurants, pubs, shops and on the outskirts lie the main supermarkets. A five minute walk to The Maltings Art Centre, for cultural theatre, music and films. A short drive will take you to the town's leisure centre with wave pool and flume. Behind the house there are tennis courts and an 18 hole golf course. The main train line station has frequent trains to Newcastle (50mins), Durham or Edinburgh (45 mins). Nearby attractions include Holy Island Lindisfarne 10 miles, and Alnwick castle, garden and it's tree house restaurant 35 miles. The house itself sleeps 10, large enough for an extended family, or to meet up with friends; with all five bedrooms en-suite, it is able to offer comfortable sleeping accommodation for everyone. The house is located in a very quiet street,as mentioned in The Times newspaper in 2014.
“ Located within the Elizabethan town walls and therefore an easy walk into the centre, but also backing onto a golf course and, beyond that, only a couple of minutes’ walk to the coast. Barbara Pentecost, of Smiths Gore, admires this quiet, gently sloping street both for its fabulous location and its “glorious” Georgian houses.”

Due to the nature of the street EV charging is not possible at the property. There are plenty of public charging places in Berwick.

The property was in a great location in a fascinating town, with easy access to the coast and lots of places to visit. The Lowry trail around the town is well worth doing. The house is great for the dog - a path leads from the road, very close to no. 40, right up onto the ramparts and access to beach and harbour. We were 8 adults and the house was certainly large enough for us all, with very pretty, comfortable bedrooms and lounge. Very well equipped throughout and beautifully presented.

We are a mature group in all 8 of us stayed at varying times during the week and we had an excellent time. The cooking facilities are very good and we enjoyed every evening in the dining room having our meals. The washing machine and dryers were also very useful as we were completinh the Northumberland coastal path and got very wet a couple of days.

The location of the house was perfect quiet but within walking distance of everything.

Ravensdowne is an ideal holiday home for friends or family holidays get together. The fact all rooms were en suite was a huge bonus and the beds were very comfortable. The house was well furnished, warm and very well equipped. It is a lovely place to celebrate Christmas, with lots of room for everyone to eat together, we actually had 14 for dinner on Boxing Day! The location was ideal, very close to the town centre and the beach. We did a good deal of sightseeing around the local area.

The property is spacious and clean. We enjoyed visiting the local area and Edinburgh. There are many walks from the door. The property is well equipped and the owner left a bottle of wine, milk and shortbread on arrival. The owner is absolutely brilliant with communication. The house has character and everything you need. Berwick is a very interesting town.

We were a family of six adults travelling from Canada to beautiful Berwick to see the town our parents met and married in, and 40 Ravensdowne was the perfect choice. A lovely old Georgian house with spacious rooms, every bedroom an ensuite, and a charming little courtyard filled with greenery and a tinkling fountain.
The house is perfectly situated for a quick walk into town or a longer amble around the Elizabethan walls, and is also about a fifteen minute walk to the train station with direct links to Edinburgh, Newcastle and London.
Chris couldn’t have been more helpful…answering every question, suggesting neighbourhood restaurants and sightseeing spots, and even offering us his home for an extra night when our train travel was disrupted.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Berwick and Ravensdowne was a big part of that.

The property was as described and ideal for our purposes. Plenty of space, everything that we needed and some lovely beaches nearby which made for excellent dog walks. We took a short direct train to Edinburgh for the day which was within easy walking distance. Will definitely be booking again.

We could not have been more fortunate in choosing Ravensdowne as the location to celebrate a 60th birthday. Truly a home from home.
Chris gets our prize for the best host; unfailingly helpful, prompt with replies to any and all questions. Giving great information both regarding Ravensdowne and places of interest and, always important, recommendations of where to eat and drink.
If you want a place to stay with a large group that is well maintained, clean, with all you need for an enjoyable, relaxing trip you have found it in Ravensdowne.
We cooked and ate as easily as at home; which from experience is not always possible in holiday accommodation and we like to cook. Plenty of cooking equipment, crockery, cutlery. Space for groceries.
We ate out in Berwick and the surrounding area, splendid meal at The Queens Head in Berwick. Another lovely meal in the Lord Crewe in Bamburgh.
There are marvellous walks, places of interest, history and phenomenal beauty.
Thank you Chris and your ladies who keep Ravensdowne in tiptop condition for us to enjoy.

Amazing holiday in Berwick
We had a wonderful stay at Chris’ property in Berwick. The house was perfect for our family which included children, teenagers and dogs! The house was the perfect space for us with a large living room with enough furniture for us all to have a seat, a fantastically stocked kitchen - plenty of crockery, cutlery, utensils, pots and pans and a big fridge and freezer
- we loved the fact that each room had its own bathroom which was perfect for the number of staying in the house. The little courtyard garden was a perfect little space and an excellent sun trap. We were blessed with great weather and all left with sun tans! The dining room was also a perfect size with a large table which all 9 of us fitted around with plenty of room. The house was very clean and tidy when we arrived and was just fabulous! The house is in a fantastic location, just a short few minutes walk from all shops, restaurants, cafes, beach and scenic walks. We did a Tesco delivery order for the day we arrived which worked out brilliantly. Berwick itself is absolutely beautiful with gorgeous beaches, lovely walks and stunning views everywhere you look. I highly recommend this beautiful little town for families with children and dogs and this fabulous house. It was the perfect stay and we can’t wait to return! Thanks Chris, you were a wonderful host and we had the best holiday ever!

Great stay in historic walled Berwick
We really enjoyed our two week visit to historic Berwick, September 2020. Ravensdowne is a lovely & very quirky house which couldn't be in a better location for sightseeing. It’s convenient for Berwick, and so easy to get to the beautiful SE Scottish & Northumberland coastlines. Great to have all bedrooms en-suite + a downstairs loo. We really loved the little garden area off the dining room. There was lots of useful kitchen equipment - all thoroughly used.
Lots of positives but there are little issues & we’ve already had useful owner responses to our feedback. Also, WiFi certainly needs an upgrade & an extension; Parking - with 3 cars & only one parking permit, over 2 weeks the walks to move the other cars got a little wearing (even if all parking is free).
Many Thanks to owner Chris for being extremely helpful and available to answer all our questions. Thanks also for all the useful information about the locality waiting for visitors in the lounge.

Ravensdowne, Berwick upon Tweed
This was a great property, right in the heart of the town and yet really quiet. We had people ranging from age 13 to 80 and had no problems at home or in the things we did, from Alnwick Garden, Lindesfarne, Edinburgh and St Abbs. Communication with our host was excellent, 5 stars all round

Lovely house, close to amenities and with some good walks
Stayed here early August 2020. Quiet street but very central for all amenities in Berwick and with easy walks to beach and lighthouse nearby. Very well equipped house and Chris was a fab host. Always on hand for answers to questions.

Extended family trip
We were a 3 generation family group who really enjoyed our stay in Berwick. We found the house really spacious with plenty of space for young children to play, whilst grandparents could still enjoy peace and quiet in the living room. We were very impressed with the kitchen being very well equipped with more than enough cutlery, crockery, glasses and pots/pans for a large group. For children there is an excellent play park about a 5 min walk away, down the lane at the back of the property. It is a short walk into town where there are many shops, pubs and cafes. However, there nearest large supermarket is about a mile away so it's handy to have a car. We had 2 cars, so with only 1 residents permit the second car was parked about a 5 min walk away, where parking is free. We were able to get WiFi at the front of the house, but not in dining room or back bedroom. This wasn't an issue for us, but may be for others. We had an excellent week here and would highly recommend to others.

Magical!
Where to start..... The pictures and description of this home really don’t do it justice. Firstly the house is huge, the pictures are deceiving. Plenty of room for everyone to have their own space but also come together.
It is exceptionally well equipped, you don’t need to take ANYTHING! It has everything from tea towels to board games to hairdryers to a tumble drier!
It’s not a show home (although it is immaculately clean) but we didn’t want that, were a family of 9, ages ranging 8-60+ and 2 dogs, we wanted to be able to come in from a day crabbing and put our feet up.
The area blew us away, so much to see and do we didn’t know where to start, we barely scratched the surface so we have a good excuse to return!
Chris was a super helpful host, he seems to genuinely want to get it right and make sure you have a great holiday.
Any negatives? Not really, the parking was a bit of a faff but we had 4 cars and all managed to find somewhere.
A tv in the loft room would help to settle young children, this room is on the 4th floor but WiFi connection is good up there so we used an iPad as a distraction.
Northumberland and The Borders are beautiful, worth getting in the car and going off the beaten track to explore further!
Thank you so much for letting us spend time in your home!

A nice comfortable property
A spacious house in a nice street, close to the town centre. It's well equipped and with each of the five bedrooms having a bathroom it makes it ideal for a large party. The owner, Chris, is very helpful.

Great Easter Break
We are a family group of 10 ages ranging from 9-81 years of age. Having been visitors to Berwick and the borders for many years we were looking forward to our Easter break and the opportunity to be close to the town centre.
The house was ideally situated for us to do a lot of walking but also go out and about. Although the house only comes with one parking permit and we had three cars, we found parking fairly easy as restriction stop around 5.30 which was when we were returning home for the day.
The property has everything you could need for a stay with enough room for 10 people without being overcrowded.
Overall we were very happy with our stay.
Communication with and friendliness of the owner was excellent.

Roomy and characterful
We were an extended family group spending Christmas together and we had a wonderful time. The house is big enough for us not to feel on top of each other and Berwick is just a lovely place. The house is very close to everything you need, a short walk from shops, restaurants, the town ramparts and the beach. The kitchen was very well equipped for making Christmas dinner and the dining room perfect for the gathering. Everyone loved the house and Chris couldn’t have been more helpful or informative. I’d highly recommend this house and location.

Lovely house in ideal location for Berwick
Ideal house for large groups and families. Very pleasant property well situated for Berwick Centre and walking the walls.
Very well equipped kitchen but would like Berwick to.improve their recycling facilities. Would definitely recommend the house!
May we suggest Beamish as an excellent day out as well as Anwick Castle.

A house with real character. Plenty of room for a large group and spacious rooms.
Very happy with accommodation and would recommend it to anyone seeking spacious accommodation and well equiped kitchen. Location is great a minute walk from the town centre and the street itself is very quiet.
If you have more than one car you have to park away from the house car park nearby.
We had a problem with the dishwasher whilst on holiday and the owner was superb. He organised a plumber to visit and sort the problem out straight away and at no real inconvenience to ourselves. Many thanks Chris.
Would recommend the lemonchello restaurant for nice food at reasonable prices. Also a walk around the walls of Berwick is a must. The Curfew micro pub is also worth a visit for some nice ales.
Finally don’t be put off but the slightly scruffy high street in Berwick as there are plenty of nicer parts to see and shop.
Locals are ok chatty and the town has a nice feel about it.
Would definitely return.

This is a great house for a family holiday.
We were 2 families staying for a week and it was great to have so much room! We also enjoyed being able to walk out to play parks, the coast, pubs and chippy! No need to get in the car is great but also within a short drive nice beaches and other attractions.
We certainly plan to stay here again😃👍.

Highly recommended
Five of us ‘girls’ who were all in the same class at University (not revealing how many years ago!) have been meeting up over the last 6 years for a week in the Spring.
We are working our way around the UK – and this year booked the above address in Berwick on Tweed – easy access by train from London and Scotland.
And – there is SO much to see and do in the surrounding area – so a car is necessary for day to day trips, For example, Lindisfarne, Paxton House, St Abbs Head, Seahouses and Alwick Castle to name a few.
The house we stayed in was the best yet – offering really spacious accommodation, extremely close to the town Centre with a variety of restaurants and quirky individual shops as well as the ‘chains’. There is also a Tourist information office.
The house also had a parking permit – a real bonus.
Inside there were 5 bedrooms – each with either twin beds or a large comfortable double, and all had en-suite bathrooms.
There was a lovely comfortable lounge with a gas fire and television – where we relaxed in the mornings and evening when not out sightseeing or eating. The rest of the house had effective Central heating.
The kitchen was very well equipped – and next to that was a really bright dining room with French door going out to the garden.
The price was VERY good in April – and if more in high season, very well worth it.
WE would definitely recommend this property highly.

ideal holiday accommodation for a large group
The spacious town house provided ideal accommodation for a family gathering. The grandchildren were delighted to find and claim the attic bedroom. The house is in a great location close to the town centre and therefore in walking distance of the shops, restaurants etc. There is very easy access to the walks along the historic ramparts, the coast and river Tweed. So there was little need to use the car.
We very much appreciated the helpful information about things to see and do in the area which was provided by the owner.

Wonderful location for 50th wedding anniversary celebration.
We had 6 adults and 4 kids - accommodation was ideal, location was perfect near the beach.
We had a professional chef as part of our party and he found the kitchen very well stocked with knives, pots and pans. The huge communal meal table worked well. The two young girls loved the attic room with a great view.
This is probably the only place in Berwick to accommodate such a large group in comfort.
There is wonderful artwork on the walls.

wonderful, beautiful spacious holiday house
I am always apprehensive booking for a family of 2 teenagers, 2 children, 2 OAPs, dog, brother & sister in law and wife. I had nothing to fear the house was 1st class and the owners have thought of everything. I am even considering buying a new mattress as there bed was more comfortable. The location was perfect for the oldies who could get into town and on the barrack walls. Will definatlety be returning
