About this cabin rental
Nestled in the heart of the Black Hills, this cozy cabin is the perfect place to unplug and unwind. Enjoy beautiful mountain scenery with family and friends on the expansive wraparound deck, perfect for a slow morning with coffee or a quiet summer night.
With a babbling stream outside your door, surrounded by lush pine forest, and a toasty living room fireplace, you may never feel the need to leave. But if you do decide to venture out, you’ll be less than 20 minutes from some of the state’s best attractions, including ski slopes at Terry Peak, mountain hikes in Spearfish Canyon, and the steakhouses, saloons and museums of historic downtown Deadwood.
-The cabin property includes one bedroom with a full-sized bed that can accommodate a couple.
-There is also snug loft space with a queen mattress tucked away under a locally sourced wood ceiling – perfect for a couple pre-teens, teens, or adventurous adults
- and a newly-finished bunkhouse with a queen-sized bed under a lofted twin approximately 20 yards from the main cabin. Guests are welcome to use the bunkhouse to sleep a number of people beyond what the cabin can accommodate.
There will be a $45 fee charged to cover the cost of additional cleaning and laundry as well as heating the building for use.
To avoid the user fee, do not enter the bunkhouse.
-We advertise the property as suitable for sleeping six persons. That is assuming use of the bunkhouse and couples sharing beds. Maitland Legacy is NOT suitable for more than three individuals not intending to share beds.
Guests are welcome to use the wood-burning fireplace. The fee of $25 is used to cover the cost of fireplace maintenance, cleaning and wood. Guests will need to visit with the host either by phone or in person when they get on-property prior to using the fireplace.
There is parking for several vehicles. The area is large enough to park a towing vehicle and attached trailer.
Experienced motorcyclists will have no problem accessing the home via well-maintained gravel roads. The cabin is located just a few miles from Spearfish, Sturgis, Deadwood, Lead, and Central City.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Maitland Legacy. The wilderness setting was extremely scenic and served our purpose to have a relaxing vacation doing almost nothing but chilling out.. The facilities were extremely clean and well-prepared for
us and the hosts were communicative and very friendly. They obviously cared about our satisfaction.us

Location is absolutely the best! Our second time staying here and we plan to come back! Listening to the babbling brook at night is our favorite!

We looked forward to coming home after all of our days of adventure. We grilled each night, and sat in the spacious deck, cooked breakfast every morning. Everything you need. Plenty of space for our family of 4. Everyone got their own bed! The loft is more spacious than the picture. We will be back!

We loved staying at Maitland Legacy. It was the perfect center point for our adventures in the black hills. The kids loved the little stream. We'd find them playing in it frequently. And it was so easy to fall asleep listening to the babbling brook. Definitely being kept on our "favorite" list

First of all, Dwayne is good people and the property is absolutely beautiful.
This rental just wasn't the right fit for me and my friend (two women in their early 40s who like their creature comforts).
Dwayne called me before my trip, and while it was an extremely long chat, I chalked it up to midwestern kindness (as I'm often stuck in my hurried East Coast frame of mind).
But he called again (on the house phone) when we got there. Then one minute later it rang again and I stopped answering. I ultimately unplugged the phone because of constant robo calls.
When we arrived, I had to kill two hornets in the living room window. Then, the first evening, as we pulled in from dinner, his partner, Char, pulled in directly behind us and wanted to chat. I had a headache, was exhausted from travel, and it felt like a major overstep.
My friend slept in the loft bed the first night--the mattress had no support and tweaked her shoulder. We spent our first morning in the Deadwood ER getting her muscle relaxers. I tried sleeping there the second night and the dust had my allergies going crazy. We ended up sharing the queen bed.
Again, the property is beautiful, the owners are well-meaning, but it was not the right fit for me at all.

The hosts were very nice to deal with and the place was wonderful. Peaceful location and spent the early mornings and late evenings sitting on the deck have beverages listening to the peaceful running sounds of the brook. Wonderful location and highly recommend it.

We loved the property, just wish the weather would have been warmer to enjoy a cocktail on the deck by the creek. It was really stocked nicely with whatever you may need, more so than most VRBO properties we have stayed at. The only drawback was the road. It was all dirt/clay and the car got filthy traveling back and forth, but of course no reflection and we dealt with it. I would most definitely stay here again.

Awesome property perfect size for the weekend for 2. Just need to point out that the kitchen and bathroom needs curtains although the tint keeps anyone from seeing inside during the Day it’s totally opposite at night gives full veiw in nighttime hours. Fortunately there’s a hillside view on those windows overall rating gets a 10 will definitely be booking again.

Great place to stay. The communication with the owners was the best you could ask for.
The cabin was clean and well furnished.
The area is beautiful.
The surround deck gives you awesome views.
There are many windows all over so if it is snowing and you just want to chill, it's perfect.

Simply amazing! The snow was gorgeous and the cabin cozy!!

This was like a home away from home! It was so nice to pack for my family knowing ahead of time what I did NOT need to bring! The ability to do laundry was such a blessing as well. As others have mentioned, the creek and property are gorgeous and so peaceful!
When booking, I had hoped that the property would be a little more remote, but after exploring the area, I realize there are a lot of people who live there/commute to nearby towns. The cabin is a perfect midway point for hiking, visiting nearby towns and exploring. We loved our experience and would come back again.
Depending on the time of year that you visit, make sure to check whether the grill will be available. It is written in the notes, but somehow we missed it. My boys were also hoping to use the basketball hoop that was pictured but everything was packed away. This was absolutely understandable given the unpredictability of snow.

Great location with easy access to Spearfish and the interstate, or to the south Lead/Deadwood. Tons of wildlife to enjoy on your ride to and from the property on the road the cabin is on. Dozens of deer and turkeys, and even a lone red fox.

Great place to connect with our SpearfishSD friends. Very comfortable and easy to get to. Saw lots of new scenery in the area.

Really enjoyed our stay at Maitland Legacy. If I could give more stars to the host I would. Very attentive and goes out of the way to make sure everything is good. The cabin sits about half way between Spearfish and Deadwood and is just minutes to either location. It's on a very large lot so you don't really have neighbors. The deck is huge and is an awesome place to hang out and enjoy the stream that runs next to the cabin. You will see tons of deer and Turkey either on the property or on your trip to town. The place was spotless and had everything we needed for our five night stay. We would definitely stay there again.

Beautiful cabin that was absolutely clean and spotless inside. You will not find nicer people on this earth than the property owners. I could not be happier with my stay and give this property my highest recommendation.

Location was good for our activity plans.
This cabin is nicely presented on the outside. We found it odd of which of the three doors to enter which turned out to be the last door. Upon entering it was right at 80 degrees inside. I then called the owner regarding A/C then found out there wasn’t one ( not noted on listing).
As the evening progressed and windows opened it did cool down. Although a grill is provided, which we did use the first night, it had seen better days. The kitchen is well stocked and clean. The bathroom is tiny and hard to use. There were other items I didn’t mention but overall this was a disappointment.

Dwayne was an exceptional host and our family felt like part of the neighborhood with his hospitality as well as the neighbors. He is very accessible for any needs you cannot beat the location.

We love this property. We have been here many times and plan to return. The creek and the deck are to die for. I have no doubts that this cabin will hold life-long memories for not only our kids but us as well.
I am so thankful the owners continue to share this little slice of heaven with us.

The cabin is located up in the forested hills. It has a stream flowing by right next to the spacious deck. If you are looking for a peaceful setting, this is it! The kitchen has all you would need to prepare a delicious meal including a bbq on the deck. Spices and condiments are there for your use also. It’s only 10 minutes or
so from Deadwood or Lead but secluded so you feel like you are away from it all.

Very enjoyable next to False Bottom Creek. Listening to the creek while sitting on the deck was calming. Definitely would recommend this property and loved the location to Deadwood and Spearfish.

Loved everything about the experience and property! The brook, the deck, the peacefulness.
Shower and bed were a bit snug. The location to Deadwood was like 2-3 miles. Loved everything.

If you like to sit outside on the deck and listen to the stream and the birds then this cabin is for you! I’ve stayed in many cabins in the hills but this one was by far the most relaxing! The stream that gently flows right next to the deck with a walkway going over the water is beautiful!! It’s a smaller cabin but if you choose to come here you won’t be inside anyway! However, the inside is very nice too!

We had a wonderful stay at the Maitland Legacy. Great choice for anyone that wants to stay away from the larger crowds, yet close enough to Deadwood to be there in a few minutes. Being at a creek side cabin is also a bonus.

The place was great and did not disappoint! Very peaceful and even meet the great neighbors in the area. Everyone was very welcoming. Kids loved the stream, and morning coffee never was better than sitting in a chair and listening to the sounds of the water rolling by.
