Grubby & rude

February 2024 What a miserable place this is, after arriving in the crowded bar with my bags, I was told to wait whilst the owner came down to check me in, after 10 minutes he never arrived so the bartender left the bar unattended to take me up several flights of very steep stairs to the bedroom on the very top floor, heaven knows what would happen should there be a fire! The beds are about 18” off the floor and very uncomfortable, everything in the room was cheap & grubby and a ‘flatscreen tv’ offered was so small you struggled to watch anything from the bed opposite! I was told the latest breakfast was at 0830 and this was served by the owner who didn’t even engage in any conversation other than a few grunts, the food was actually good but after I went back to my room I was rudely told after a knock at the door that I had to be out of my room, it was 3 minutes after their early check out time of 10.30. Overall it is a shabby place I wouldn’t ever stay at again, I heard it won the four in a bed tv competition, how, I will never know, maybe the other places must have been dreadful in comparison. Before writing this I read other reviews and came across someone that had a similar experience to me, so my experience is not a one off!

Homely comforts and great value for money

A bit of a wander from Durham City centre's train station, but pleasant enough. Good breakfast. Great helpful and cheery staff and welcoming friendly public house.

Excellent place to stay

Billy and his staff made me very welcome from minute one. Nice room with everything you would need. Friendly local people in the bar and attentive polite staff. The breakfast was outstanding 👌 Many thanks to all.

Awful and nightmarish

Possibly location

Change the mattresses.. absolutely horrendous.. Owners try and sleep on them.. Shambolic!!

Warm,clean,excellent staff, great pub with great landlord

A great wintry weekend.

Lovely warm room with well appointed bathroom. Weather made walking down into town difficult but convenient bus stop right outside front door. Fantastic value.

I've stayed here for the last umpteen years in December. It is very convenient for visiting Durham.

Tthe staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was lovely. The location is good as you can walk into Durham and, if you are driving from the A1, it is conveneient as you don't have to go into the City Centre and free parking is plentiful. It is also incredible value for money as Durham hotels are usually on the expensive side.

This was a very characterful bed and breakfast.

As an American travelling in England for the first time, this is exactly what I imagined English buildings to be like; the building just oozed character. The pub downstairs was also what I imagine "real English" pubs were like and the regulars were friendly enough with an ignorant American bugging them and asking them questions.

Excellent location. Superb value. Perfectly fine accommodation.

Really happy with this accommodation and would definately use again. Superb value. Location excellent, next to car park, Sainsburys and cash point next door, above a pub so could get a glass of wine but also the room was so quiet. Would definately recommend for value for money.

Nice clean room with all the basic facilities. I enjoyed the breakfast with a good selection of choices. Adequate free car parking and a bus stop nearby for quick access to the town centre.

There was no lift so some stairs to negotiate. Might be an problem for people with mobility issues.

Oh boy if you like a full English, this is a belly buster. It's an easy bus ride into town and very close to the bus stop in both directions. Lovely host and a really nice pub.

Clean premises, friendly staff and superb value for money.

The walk up a steep hill from Durham centre!.At least it improved our fitness.

A very reasonably priced room in a good location.

Within easy walking distance of the city and on a bus route. Breakfast was excellent value. Room was spacious and clean.

Bed was on the soft side. No restaurant facilities.

Friendly local pub not far from Durham centre

Lovely staff (owners), friendly pub & locals. Great (big!) full English breakfasts. Room spotlessly clean. Comfy bed. Ensuite good. Real ales good. I will stay here again.

Some noise from pub below & early morning beer deliveries but nothing I wasn’t expecting- I still slept very well. Steep walk uphill from town (bus advised)

Excellent value for money with a good welcome and pleasant room.

Room was spacious and well-kept, and much quieter than I expected as a light sleeper; the staff were very friendly and helpful. Very satisfied!

excellent value for money if you’re traveling on a tight budget and need somewhere close to the city centre

good location with easy access to city centre and amenities on a go doorstep. room was serviced, which I don’t expect at the price - great value for money

you could feel every spring in the mattress. there was a chippy (or similar) next door with a whopping great industrial exhaust that chugged out horrible fat smells. meant we couldn’t have the window nearest that open. the shower cubicle is very cramped.
