About this house rental
Sanctuary Vacation Rentals is proud to present "Tuscany by the Sea"! Sleeps up to 8 guests.
A winning combination of elegance and casual living can be found nestled in the treetops of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the perfect hideaway that’s also close to the best of everything that the Monterey Peninsula has to offer.
The 4-bedroom, 2-bath custom-built home has unique Old World designer touches such as hand-hewn walnut floors, intricate hand-laid tile and Italian marble, vaulted ceilings, Murano glass fixtures, custom cabinetry, stained glass, and artisan wrought iron railings, as well as a comfortable open floor plan on the first floor that makes it ideal for hosting family gatherings or reunions of friends.
The 1,600-square-foot residence is just a few blocks away from downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea and just around the corner from entertainment at the city’s renowned Sunset Center. It’s also only a 10-minute drive to golfing and dining in Pebble Beach®, or to the Monarch Butterfly habitat in Pacific Grove. Other nearby attractions such the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row are also about 10 minutes away and it’s about 15 minutes to wine tasting and antiques shopping in Carmel Valley.
Native plants, flax and succulents greet visitors along the stairway to the front door, which opens to a great room that includes the living room, dining room and kitchen. The living room has a 36-inch HDTV as well as cozy seating around a wood-burning, gas-kindled fireplace, making this a place for conversation, playing board games or reading.
The dining table seats six beneath a Tiffany-style stained glass chandelier as well as original ocean-themed artwork. The fully-equipped kitchen next to the dining room has a custom tile back-splash, marble counter-tops, updated appliances including a Jenn-Air gas stove with four burners, recessed lighting, and a deep farmhouse sink with a window that looks out to the backyard garden.
The backyard, accessible through French doors in the living room, is surrounded by a rustic wood fence for privacy and features several sitting areas surrounded by rhododendron, citrus trees and calla lilies, as well as native live oaks. A gourmet gas grill is available for afternoon barbecues, and patio seating makes this a perfect spot to sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. Well-equipped for extended stays!

Reviewer Comments:
Tuscany By the Sea is a lovely, well built house on Junipero in Carmel. The house is charming but a bit dark and quirky. It has a drawer refrigerator which is not ideal and drawer dishwasher which is also not very convenient. The bathrooms are small and the worst part is that the main bathroom has a shower over clawfoot tub - which is very difficult to get in and out of. A normal shower stall would have been. much easier use.The location is good but Junipero is quite a busy street and you definitely had to watch out when getting down the stairs. Parking also was not ideal since it is street parking only. What we did enjoy the most was the lovely backyard with its patio for dining or lunch and the Gazebo for chilling with a glass of wine or taking an afternoon nap.

We loved our stay at Tuscany by the Sea. The house is in a great location and is quirky, but charming and well built. It’s on a somewhat busy road, but you can easily walk downtown and to the ocean. We enjoyed a show at the Sunset Center only a couple of blocks away. The kitchen only has refrigerator and freezer drawers, which was a bit challenging for our stay over the holidays, but would normally be adequate. The showers are small. There is street parking for one car out front, but there is also a public parking lot (with EV chargers) and also some street parking a block or 2 away if you have more than 1 vehicle. We mostly walked everywhere so did not find the parking to be burdensome. The neighbors were lovely and brought us the local papers each week. You do have to be prepared for a lot of stairs which is challenging when unloading and loading and also some uphill walks when heading downtown or to the beach. We did love walking around the neighborhood and looking at all of the beautiful homes and cottages.Overall, we really enjoyed our stay in this unique, lovely house in a charming, magical city. We would definitely stay there again.

We have rented homes through Sanctuary by the Sea vacation rentals for the past 5 years. While we were pleased with our prior home rental experiences we were very disappointed with this home and the home rental experience.
First, the home was not furnished as pictured in the listing photos. For example the living room sofa and chairs were not adequate to accommodate our needs. The sofa was entirely different than shown in the listing photos.
It was stated in the listing that there was a designated parking space for the home which is inaccurate. The spot indicated in front of the home we found out is not a dedicated space and others parked there during our stay. As instructed we set up our mid stay cleaning appointment and coordinated our schedule accordingly. The cleaning service never showed up. A concierge service included in the rental fee provided for the pick up and return of trash cans up and down the stairs back to the side of the home. This was inaccurate! trash cans were not returned to the home.

Reviewer Comments:
The house was lovely, but had a number of issues. First and foremost was the fact that there was no garage, and the refrigerator was basically two drawers (Euro style). Second issue was the parking. It is impossible to put two cars in front of home, and neighbor was a real a#@hole. He insisted on parking as far up as possible to the property line between the two houses (he had plenty of room behind his car) which required me to parallel park. Not an easy task since the home is on Junipero. We had issues with the internet (was not properly hooked up when the new TV was installed). The backyard was lovely, but was not put together or cleaned. I had to arrange furniture, pull out the cushions and fix the fountain which was not working and full of green slim. Only issue on the fountain was the recirculating hose had come loose. Once all of this was done we really enjoyed the fountain and back yard. Another issue was smoke alarms. I replaced 4 batteries and ultimately we had to replace 2 smoke alarms. They always seemed to start chirping in the middle of the night (it would be good to have a small step ladder at the home as the smoke alarms on the 2nd floor landing are hard to reach). Finally, we had to buy a carpet mat for the dining room rug as it was very slippery when you would come down the step from the kitchen (my wife fell twice). I mentioned this to the House Manager and she advised that one would be installed but that did not happen while we were at the property. All in all the home was lovely, but did not appear to be ready for us to occupy

Overall a very comfortable place, and very well situated close to town and the woods (for dog walking) and the beach. Size of rooms was good, but could have done with a couple of small desks in the bedrooms to offer an alternate workspace from the dining room table. Appliances were good, and Sanctuary Vacations were very responsive in the event we didn't have everything we needed. Many thanks to their team for making it a great month for us!

Reviewer Comments:
Staying with Sanctuary Rentals was a nightmare. Upon arrival, the home was filthy. I had read this in other reviews and specifically asked about this before booking, but was assured the home would be properly cleaned. The linens had not been changed, there was food in the rugs, etc. We were also rented a home with a broken laundry machine, oven, and fridge. Sanctuary knew about these issues but rented the home anyway, for a month, without warning us. We were told multiple times that "maintenance" was coming to fix the issues, but no one came. Finally I was told that there was no need for maintenance to come because the appliances needed to be replaced and it would take months. We were traveling with a baby and had no laundry or fridge for weeks before Sanctuary even tried to fix the situation. They offered their laundry service and then lost our laundry, and then brought us the incorrect laundry. I spent most of our trip trying to get in touch with someone at the company. I strongly recommend you stay anywhere else.

My visit to Tuscany by the sea, started off pretty disappointing as far as many supplies the house lacked, a kitchen trash can, the 2 outdoor propane tanks completely empty, the carpet in living room was dirty with stains and something brown and rancid in the carpet, I even tried vacuuming it out? the couches had dried Cheetos or something that looked like it all around, BUT after cleaning and getting Tim's help fro SVR i was very happy with an excellent location to walk over to the Mission Preserve, such a beautiful place to hike and walk daily along with 11th street straight up to the beach or take a right on San Carlos to great Restaurants. Tha backyard has a most peaceful setting to practice yoga under the pergola or just sit and relax. the sheeting was comfortable the shower/bath upstairs is very diffcult and perhaps safety is not for showering, but bathing is nice. All in all we enjoyed the space. Oh they do need a new pair of scissors in the kitchen, the one was rusty and did not work so well, a little TLC to kitchen appliances could be in order too. "Grant it" is is an older house and location FAB!
