About this hotel
This property will no longer be managed by Stay Charlottesville as of the end of November 2024.
Designed for those who love classic comforts, the Secretariat room features antique woods, leather accents, houndstooth patterns and gold finishes that create a warm, Virginian retreat.
The Townsman is the newest concept in hotel accommodations. Instead of charging you for things you’ll never use, we’ve pared ourselves down to the essentials. Incredible locations. Beautiful rooms. Great prices. Once you book with us, we’ll give you a code that grants you access to the hotel and your room. After that, all you have to do is show up. No check-in. No hassles. Just a boutique hotel, steps from the places you most want to be.
Where are you located exactly?
We’re at 211 West Main Street, right on Charlottesville’s historic Downtown Mall. The location can't be beat in the middle of the downtown action! We like to note to future guests that this is a popular area (especially on the weekends) and the noise level on the Downtown Mall may be higher particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Where do Townsman guests park?
Parking: Parking for guests is located at 300 Preston Ave. in Charlottesville. There is one spot for each room located directly to the left of the main sign for the parking lot. Each Spot has signage that has "The Townsman" and the corresponding name of the room on them. Please only park in the spot designated for your room.
How does the code work?
Our front door and the door to your room will feature a keypad into which you’ll enter your personal code. The code we give you when you book is given to no one else and only works for the duration of your stay.
What services do you offer?
What we offer is a room you’ll love in a downtown location that can’t be beat. To keep our prices where you want them, we don’t have an onsite staff, front desk, room service or amenities you may not need; but we do have Charlottesville’s downtown walking mall, restaurants, coffee shops, a movie theater, and local boutique shopping just steps away.
Do you have Internet access?
Yes! The Wi-Fi code will be in your room.
Will there be a phone in my room?
We do not have phone service but the building does have good cell service, so bring your phone and stay connected.
On the first-floor landing you’ll find:
A refrigerator available to all guests
Complimentary bottles of water & coffee

Great location and space.

I I like this property. Tidy and comfortable.
4.7
Right on the mall to see a show and dine. Location made everything easy.
4.7
The location was really unique and convenient to anything you would want to do. I could see how the weekends could be noisy but being right in the middle of everything is expected. The cons are that the sliding door didn’t lock and the light on my side of the bed didn’t work (looked broken maybe) and the mattress needs replacing. Everything was clean but the mattress hurt our backs so bad. I think sleeping on the floor would have not hurt as bad. All in all it would be perfect if those things could be fixed.

Enjoyed dinner and music at the Common House next door - very enjoyable evening!

Went for a wedding. Absolutely fantastic location. Parking was easy so was check in. Literally the only negative was no mini fridge in the room. Quiet. Loved it. Would go again

Great place to stay in downtown Charlottesville.

Great place at an amazing location

This is the perfect location to bar hop and enjoy all of the downtown area.
4.7
Busy area when it’s nice out but the noise wasn’t a problem. Has a city feel because you can walk out of the building to dozens of food places, shops, and bars. A movie theater located directly across the walk way. Would definitely stay here again. The wine bottle opener left in the desk came in clutch! Thank you!!!

Secretariat at The Townsman was a lovely room exactly as described in the listing. We were expecting a lot of noise due to the nightlife close by, but it was quiet and we had no noise issues at all. Comfy bed and cute space. Love the ability to walk right out into the Downtown Mall area. Will likely choose The Townsman the next time we visit!
4.7
The place was very clean and up to date. Really enjoyed the location and accessibility to shops/restaurants. Parking was easy and free. The tv was spotty and worked sort of but this wasn’t a make or break.
4.7
You can’t beat the location of the Townsman! Loved that you could walk just about everywhere. We had a little trouble at check-in, but a quick phone call and we were in our room. Would stay again.
4.7
Location was great. Room had great amenities. Our door code didn’t work and it took a little time to get in touch with someone. Made check in a little stressful. Only other comment is that patio should be swept.
4.7
A fun location, very comfortable, and nicely appointed room. Quiet and cozy, but near all kinds of great downtown options. Easy to reserve.
4.7
Could not have asked for a better location. Right on main street with easy access to restaurants and stores. Got a little loud at night but that is the trade-off for proximity to everything. The room was cute, clean, and comfortable.
4.7
It was a small challenge to find the property, but it was well worth it. You can walk anywhere and its located right on the mall.
4.7
Great stay at the Townsman, great property, great location. Highly recommend
4.7
Clean well maintained property with lots to explore just steps from your door!

Perfect place to stay. We will be renting there again

Cute room on the mall
This was a cute room on the downtown pedestrian mall. It was a convenient location for visiting Monticello and UVA. It was nice to stroll the mall and choose a restaurant for dinner. The mall did get a little noisy in the later evening.

Disappointed
The location of the building was fantastic, right on a pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, Va; did not know about the mall until we got there. The supplied map implied that we could drive by the hotel, park near by, and take out our luggage. But the street is for pedestrians only; it would have been nice if the map had made that clear. The A/C would not respond to the wall control. It did seem to cool the room eventuallly, but slower than we wanted. The wifi password was supposed to be in the room but we could not find it. There was a plastic holder where it might have been at some time. So no wifi; that was disappointing because our cell phones have a limited data plan and our tablets are wifi only. Also, the Roku box would not work; the tv just kept showing the bouncing ROKU letters from a ROKU startup, never ending. Also the back of the ROKU case kept falling off, needed scotch tape or something, but we ended up not using it anyway. The TV did have a few regular channels. Overall, it was as if no one really checks out the room after a guest leaves. There was a cork screw for wine, but we had to go to a bar to get some ice. Overall, disappointing room, great location!

A bit of a walk from parking and the stairs are abit steep but overall quite satisfied

Beautiful room, perfect location. We will most definitely stay there again.

Charming boutique hotel, and a room with a lovely private balcony, in a location on the Pedestrian Mall that could not be better. Terrific!

Great location with easy access to everything you want in Charlottesville. friendly team members

I enjoyed the ease of using the property - the location was good and the use of key codes to get in and out was easy. I liked that the property, though called a hotel, felt more like a B&B given its small size. The ability to access the Common House was a major plus that I should've taken advantage of more, with a bonus that the staff there being super helpful. I received checkin emails and didn't have any face-to-face interactions.
4.7
I loved having a cute quiet room.
I loved having a cute quiet room. Not having a check in desk almost made it feel like coming home instead of staying in a hotel. We really loved the property. I didn't speak with anyone directly but I loved it that way.
4.7
I loved how my room was decorated. I would stay here again for my next trip to Charlottesville. I loved that it was a 2 minute walk to the Jefferson Theater for a show I came to town to see. I do wish the restaurants had been open later during the week for after the show but otherwise it was really convenient! The staff at Stay Charlottesville were very accommodating and friendly. They allowed me to book a 1 night stay during the week so I could enjoy the Townsman. They made it very stress free for me.
4.7
I was in the Poe room. It faced the street and was a bit noisy. Telephone support was very good. I made just a one night reservation which was only possible to do on the phone. The person who assisted in making the reservation was very helpful.
4.7
I was surprised there was no full-length mirror or mirror outside the bathroom. As a 5'1" woman the mirror bathroom was mounted too high to see below my chin. I loved the Kuerig and fridge on the landing but was surprised there was no cream for the coffee. Otherwise the hotel is lovely and met our needs very well!

Location was great.
Location was great. Access to Common House and amenities was a key part of our visit. Liked the parking setup as well. I would stay again and highly recommend to others.

Loved everything about it!!! Very close walk to Jefferson Theatre, shops, restaurants, bar, simply perfect!!
Your team was great!! I had forgotten my concert tickets at home and needed them printed. I called the office and they were printed and delivered to my room!
