About this hotel
This property will no longer be managed by Stay Charlottesville as of the end of November 2024.
Inspired by a sense of adventure and yet grounded with a modern, Southern elegance, the Meriwether room lets you know you’ve arrived at a highlight of your travels.
The Townsman is the newest concept in hotel accommodations. Instead of charging you for things you’ll never use, we’ve pared ourselves down to the essentials. Incredible locations. Beautiful rooms. Great prices. Once you book with us, we’ll give you a code that grants you access to the hotel and your room. After that, all you have to do is show up. No check-in. No hassles. Just a boutique hotel, steps from the places you most want to be.
Where are you located exactly?
We’re at 211 West Main Street, right on Charlottesville’s historic Downtown Mall. The location can't be beat in the middle of the downtown action! We like to note to future guests that this is a popular area (especially on the weekends) and the noise level on the Downtown Mall may be higher particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Where do Townsman guests park?
Parking: Parking for guests is located at 300 Preston Ave. in Charlottesville. There is one spot for each room located directly to the left of the main sign for the parking lot. Each Spot has signage that has "The Townsman" and the corresponding name of the room on them. Please only park in the spot designated for your room.
How does the code work?
Our front door and the door to your room will feature a keypad into which you’ll enter your personal code. The code we give you when you book is given to no one else and only works for the duration of your stay.
What services do you offer?
What we offer is a room you’ll love in a downtown location that can’t be beat. To keep our prices where you want them, we don’t have an onsite staff, front desk, room service, or amenities you may not need; but we do have Charlottesville’s downtown walking mall, restaurants, coffee shops, a movie theater, and local boutique shopping just steps away.
Do you have Internet access?
Yes! The Wi-Fi code will be in your room.
Will there be a phone in my room?
We do not have phone service but the building does have good cell service, so bring your phone and stay connected.
On the second-floor landing you’ll find:
A refrigerator available to all guests
Complimentary bottles of water & coffee
Is there an elevator?
Like most of downtown Charlottesville’s most charming buildings, we are not equipped with an elevator. All of our rooms are walk-ups, accessed by the stairs.
In your room, you’ll find:
A private balcony on the alley side overlooking Common House
King Bed
Desk
Flat Screen TV with Apps/Local Channels
Hair Dryer
Iron & Board
Soap & Shampoo
Second Floor across from the Poe Room
Accessible by Stairs Only
All guests of Stay Charlottesville receive exclusive access to Common House during your stay. Common House is a local membership based social club that offers a unique space to work, dine, and engage. There is a co-work space available during weekdays, a full service restaurant offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a roof-top terrace with sweeping views of Charlottesville.

Great location. Clean room. Would recommend.

My stay in the Meriwether sweet was very nice. Parking and check-in instructions were accurate and easy to understand. The pedestrian mall is such a good time and the coffee shop right under the hotel is delightful. While the room does have a sweet little balcony, it sadly doesn't over look the street. But the room was nice and quiet (likely because it wasn't on the street!). I would love to stay again.

Overall the experience was great. Room was clean with amazing access to all that downtown has to offer. Entry into the building us easy. The only thing i would prefer is a softer bed. The ones here are definitely on the firm side.

The Townsman is in an absolutely amazing location. The bed, pillows and linen were all amazingly comfortable. There is a coffee shop, tons of shops, bars and restaurants steps away. Would definitely stay again!

Coffee cups are paper, not real cups. So if you are not holding on to it when it is filling up, it tips over and spills everywhere. Not a big deal, but just good to know if you have papers on the desk.

Perfect location, perfect room, perfect weekend

I had a wonderful time staying here! The location was perfect and though it was at the Downtown Mall, it was so quiet and peaceful. I would stay here again!

We really loved the location and the cleanliness of the room but the person in the room across the hall was smoking and had a dog with them. Our room really smelled of smoke and so did our clothes by the second day. Would love to stay again under different circumstances.

Nothing short of an amazing room, and location!

We spent Sunday and Monday nights. I believe that we were the only one staying at the "Unhotel "and it was very quiet, very comfortable, very convenient. We enjoyed walking to the restaurants nearby each night and to explore Cville. The access to the Common House is a big plus.
4.7
The Townsman staff were extremely communicative and kindly granted us a late check-out the morning of

Lovely room right on Cville’s Downtown Mall.

convenient, easy access to downtown shops and restaurants... simple easy access to room/accommodations. easy access... pleased with the concern for access to the property as door lock system battery indicator showed low. Call to make us aware and came out to replace the battery on her own while we were out to diner.

Enjoyed being on the mall. There were many good restaurants close by. Very quiet on the street. The room was very nicely decorated and looked new. Very well cared for. Daily room service was good. Great!

Excellent.
Excellent. I had to call on Saturday (the day of the reservation) because I had neglected to do the paperwork in time and hadn't gotten check-in instructions yet. The team was incredibly helpful and took care of everything right away.

Fantastic! This property was one of the nicest I have ever stayed in!
4.7
Great location, amenities, cleanliness, and experience. I was thoroughly impressed as soon as I walked in, and thought that it was much better than some of the more expensive hotels that I have stayed in, in the past. Even comparing this room to the Omni, I think I got the better experience. Thank you! If/when I come back in town I will be staying here again! great email communication. I felt very prepared when arriving. I think the only thing that may help is some better explanations of where exactly it is located.

Great location, an easy walk to the parking. The room is perfectly simple and cozy. We had to call for a single night reservation, the woman I spoke with was wonderful.

Parking closer than I imagined.

Great location / not great on the parking/ I was expecting more from kitchenette - no refrig just beverage cooler, no micro wave and no ice - those are basics to me. Very nice

Great location. Responsive staff when our door was not locking.
We stayed in the Merriwether room and you could really hear the people in the room upstairs walking around. It was very distracting and we did not sleep well the second night we were there.

great location we loved it
beautiful place
liked the privacy

Highs - beautiful room, amazing location (right next to the rehearsal dinner location!), and fun experience there. I appreciated the sound machine, and Netflix in the room was pretty sweet.
Lows - there were stains on the bedspread at the moment we walked in. Pretty obvious stains as well. It truly was a disappointment to see. Additionally, the fact that we needed to print up the parking document was a pain in the butt, because we forgot to do it until we got there. If there was an alternative solution (you mail it to us in advance? The parking lot has our license plate on file?) it would be greatly appreciated, as printing the document turned in to quite a chore. If someone forgets to print, you should advise them on where to go - we went to Office Depot. Lastly, and this is definitely nitpicking - it would be appreciated to have a shorter room code, so it's easier to remember!
In any case, with all said, it was certainly a mostly positive experience. Thanks for reading. N/A

I loved the design of the room, very elegant and beautiful. Very helpful and accommodating especially with matching the government rate for lodging.

In the check-in instructions it would be VERY helpful to add a better description of where to find the entry door. "Next to the Mudhouse coffee shop." We were 50 feet from the door and could not see it. Otherwise we had a wonderful stay.
BTW, gave it 4 1/2 stars instead of five because of that. The one interaction I had was very helpful.

Needed more waters stocked in the fridge and back-up when those ran out.
Needed more waters stocked in the fridge and back-up when those ran out. Sheets had blood stain on them, which was pretty off putting. I've always experienced good service with your team.

Only one glitch.
Only one glitch. We called to see if it might be possible to check in an hour or so early and were told that you would check with housekeeping and call us back. No call ever came.
