A very pleasant, intimate hotel in an old building by the University square and the main pedestrian street.
Unfortunately, no minibar/small refrigerator at least in my room, perhaps other too.

Bed could be more comfortable.

It was a very comfortable stay and we liked the location.
The parking was a bit of a hassle. Had to park in a parking structure and not on the hotel grounds.

The room was fairly large and very clean. Perfect location to visit the sites of Heidelberg. The staff were very helpful pointing out places to visit. I would definitely recommend the hotel and will stay here again when we next visit. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. We also ate in the restaurant and the food was amazing, highly recommended.
Nothing, it was perfect

Location was wonderful---in the middle of the old town. Very spacious and comfortable rooms and bathroom. Hotel has a traditional and charming feel to it.

Hotel & Gasthaus Backmulde is ideally located within the old part of Heidelberg, offering a good base to set out from and explore the city. The hotel offers a continental buffet breakfast, which is freshly laid out each morning. The free WiFi worked in and out of our room (even in the small courtyard).
The room we stayed in was very clean with many modern facilities (bathroom - shower, hairdryer, mirror etc. bedroom - open hanging closet, open shelving for more storage with a safe, comfortable beds, sideboard and TV; the TV has many channels (including radio), but only 1 (BBC World News) English speaking).
There is a lift for those not wanting to use the stairs. Located in Reception, there is a small vending machine which contains some refreshments at reasonable prices.
Hauptstrasse, the main street in the old City is subject to Low Emission Zone and therefore becomes pedestrianised between 11:00 am and 05:00 am (my understanding), so motorised vehicles are not allowed, but there are many car parks outside of the zone, if you need to park. Do be aware of the plethora of bicycles. Many of the streets are flat cobbles with inlaid walking areas but they are used by pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles alike!
The room did not have tea/coffee making facilities, a fridge or air conditioning (although a fan was left in our room but to be honest we didn't need to use it). It was a little noisy early in the morning when the rubbish was being collected.
As a result of LEZ many of the shops (with a few exceptions of mainly food shops) do not open until between 10:00 am and 11:00 am albeit deliveries and rubbish collection do take place before 11:00, and many close at 17:00 pm! Therefore, with our timing (we were out and about elsewhere) we never saw some shops open at all!
I would urge anyone booking this hotel to look at the last check-in time (19:00 hrs local time), unfortunately I didn’t, as this hotel is not typical insofar as it is not staffed full time. The reception and doors to the hotel shut at 19:00 hrs and after this time, there is no staff about.
We arrived after 19:00, and had a problem! The entrance door was locked but a sign pointed us to the restaurant to book in. However, being a Monday, the restaurant was completely closed! We tried to call the telephone number listed on our paper work but to no avail. Fortunately for us, just as we were about to give up, a guest came back to the hotel and following a discussion, let us up into the reception where fortunately there was an envelope with our name on it, and keys to our room enclosed. So, a request to the owner, perhaps if the hotel could email out instructions and a one-off code (which could be entered in to the card reader), it would cover all bases and alleviate the stress and horror we underwent.

- Room was small but lovely. Bed was clean and very new bathroom.
- Breakfast was very good, they also prepared questionnaire for breakfast choice on the check-in date.
- A little difficult to find parking space, make sure to search for Parkhaus nearby in advance.
- I have allergy to dust and the floor in the room was covered with beautiful carpet : the room was good clean enough for non-dust allergic people.

During our stay, 19 August 2021, our room on the 2nd floor did not have wifi, at all!
