Our bungalow was really nice, authentic and cozy. The location was perfect - just a 1 minute walk to the beach. The family that manage the properly are very helpful and friendly.
Nothing.

We had the most wonderful time with John, Véronique, Becky and John-Marc. They went out of their way to make it such a special holiday for us.
My husband and I went there for one week and every day we discovered more of the island, the people and how they live. John can arrange every activity you want and we could decide that spontaneously in the morning. We went to the volcanoe, to the Yakel tribe, to a local english school, to the village nearby, to the local market and even cooked Simboro and Laplap with them. John also accompanied us on every trip and gave us additional informations and he even speaks the language clik, so he could also communicate with the people of the Yakel tribe. Every evening, after dinner, John made a fire at the nearby fireplace to enjoy the rest of the evening.
When you want to see the real Tanna you definitely have to go to this place.
nothing it was exceptional

Alofa, as its name suggests, is located on the beach and is near local villages. The accommodation is basic, but has its own special charm. Our local hosts, Glen and his sister, were very kind and helpful. While the menu options were limited, Glen's fried chicken and chips were quite decent. We really enjoyed swimming at the local beach where the locals swim. More luxurious resorts offer more comfort, but we felt we experienced the real Tanna staying at Alofa.
Our family group initially stayed in bungalows 2 and 3. Bungalow 2: On our first night my wife was awoken by a rat dragging her reading glasses across the floor; later the same evening the rat was found making off with a packet of biscuits. My wife then joined our children in Bungalow 3. We subsequently discovered that rat was living inside the wall lining. Due to the rat issue, my wife and I eventually moved to Bungalow 4 when it became available - but not after the rat had eaten holes through my shorts as I had (foolishly) left a biscuit wrapper in my pockets. The cats that jump on the table during meal times were quite annoying - apparently, they are there to keep the rats out of the kitchen, which makes sense.

John and Veronique were amazing hosts and were extremely helpful when our flights got cancelled. They happily involved us in their local culture and showed us their customs. Everything is clean, beds are super comfy. When the shower head broke he immediately fixed it within 24h. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner for reasonable prices and all meals very good and delicious. I'm all positive about my 4-night stay, highly recommended!

As we were travelling on a budget and keen to meet the locals Alofa Beach bungalows was the perfect balance of comfort and friendly hospitality. Simple, relaxing and authentic looking bungalows with ensuite, running water and hot showers.
The host were lovely and ready to help with whatever we needed. The food was nice. Pancakes for breakfast :)
The bungalows are near a long stretch of coral strewn beach typical of Vanuatu and close to the local village. Perfect alternative to the resorts if you're after a more authentic experience.
Good tip is not to bring food into your bungalows as it attracts little animals ;)

the managers were extremely friendly and showed us their village and went snorkeling with us.
probably lack of choice of food as they ran out of many things whilst we were there ….as we prefer not to eat meat our meal choice was very limited they ran out of eggs, cola, beer and we had to pay for our bill so they could buy more at the market before the end of our stay and still didn’t buy eggs!

You're right on the beach, just two minutes walk distance to go for a swim. The bungalow was beautiful, clean and tidy.

Véronique and Jean-Marc were the most welcoming hosts. They genuinely care for our well-being, our safety and will properly recommend tours depending on the weather. They also include us in the local life and give us a rare opportunity into local tradition, cuisine, and community. Food is great, the beach is awesome. Close to the airport.
Internet is unstable and a bit slow (good of emails and planning your trip, forget about uploading pictures). The black magic day tour was too expensive for what it was.

Great location on beautiful beach. Friendly staff. Well priced. Good food. Bed was comfortable.
More mosquitos than at Whitegrass up the road and fle screens weren't perfect but we didn't get bitten. The geckos did their work.

Being right next to a very long beach, stretching in both directions.
Not enough hot water for two quick showers. Food is monotonous.

Far from everything, so be prepared to get buses everywhere you go. This adds up and can get in the way of enjoying your holiday.

The beach at high tide is beautiful and the sunsets are incredible. Convenient to get to and from the airport.
The glowing reviews about Alofa are quite surprising to me! The property is beautiful, but the bungalows themselves are very old and not very clean. They’re also set way back from the beach, so you get no view and no ocean breeze (meaning they’re crawling with flies). Not much care has been taken to provide any experience for guests, so you kind of feel like you’re imposing on their hospitality when you need anything, and you’re quite isolated so you do rely on the staff for most things. Breakfast was just white bread and butter and you have to pay 500 Vatu extra for Tanna coffee. Lunch was the same chicken or beef and chips every day we were there and dinner only changed once. All meals were pretty average. Lastly, the tours were very overpriced (we paid 17000 to visit the volcano when all the resorts nearby charge between 13-15000, which we only realized after). Alofa could be much better with a few small upgrades (hammocks or chairs to lie on the beach, a place to eat near the water, etc.), but the owners don’t live there anymore and it doesn’t seem like anyone cares much. If I went to Tanna again I would probably stay fewer days in a nicer place.
