This property was cute clean and a great location loved the little patio!

Easy in, easy out. If you need a quick 1 bedroom in Costa Mesa, this works.
It’s quiet and backs up to the Waldorf school where the trail begins.

The Retreat is a sweet, simple, and accessible place to stay in the Costa Mesa/Huntington Beach area. Beautiful area, available parking, and had everything I needed for a short stay. Hosts are super friendly, sweet, communication, and accommodating! Will undoubtedly be staying here again in the future!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4-night stay. The rooms were comfortable and homey, close to stores and amenities, and with a wonderful walking trails adjacent to the property. Highly recommended.

Needed a place to stay for 5 days with my two dogs. This was perfect - located right next to the beautiful Fairview Park. Had everything we needed! Lovely patio.
4.6
Overall, we had a good stay. The location was great - very close to Huntington beach, trails for walking/biking, and anything you might need food and supply-wise. We loved the little patio area and spent a lot of time out there during our stay. Also, the bed was very comfortable.
A couple opportunities for improvement - the map didn't really show the parking spots clearly so we were real nervous we weren't in the right spot, so you might consider adding a photo of that to the listing. And the property was a little more run down and dingy than it appeared in the photos, though overall acceptably clean. Main complaints were that it smelled a little musty, there was a whole bunch of junk stacked up outside against the window in the kitchenette area, and the trash can in the kitchen was full of fruit flies so we took that outside and proceeded to use the outdoor trash can during our stay.
4.6
The location of the Canyon Ranch was great. It was in Costa Mesa, next to a national park for walking. Short drive to the Huntington Dog Park, and Balboa Island. The owner and staff were very nice and provided local information for fun activities during our vacation.

My husband, two small dogs, and I had a lovely 4 night stay. The room was as described: clean quiet, and convenient to everything. The bed was comfortable and had two nice sized night stands. The tv worked nicely and was a great bonus. We were happily surprised to find a much larger refrigerator than pictured. While the room is small like a hotel room, the private patio is such a spectacular bonus. There is a nice table and chairs to eat or relax in. There is a good mix of sunshine and shade. Our pups had room to roam around and do their business. Having the park right down the street made going for walks wonderful. It has a nice mix of dirt paths and paved walkway. We found that assigned on site parking could get tight but we were offered another on site space and there was plenty of street parking. The entrance door had a handle lock and dead bolt. The sliding glass door only locks from the inside but we felt perfectly safe since the entrance door had double locks on the door. An opportunity for improvement would be to have the bike tires inflated and ready to go.

Property was in great location. Loved enclosed patio for dog. Place was clean and bed was very comfortable. Communication with host was great.
Also want owner to know we found the bottle of wine we thought we had left.
Thanks for such a great place to stay.

I love the patio! It’s a sweet peaceful place to sit and read, watch hummingbirds, and butterflies. I would definitely stay here again!
4.6
It was a nice little place to stay with my dogs. A bit more space than a hotel room having a full bath and a little kitchen. A nice little patio with enough dirt areas for a quick potty. Really nice that it was across from a nature area with trails to take the dogs on a nice quiet walk. The people in the unit next door the first night were pretty rude and kind of loud but inside the unit i couldn't hear them at all.
4.6
Fantastic location and pet friendly, with a nearby park and bird sanctuary with trails. Loved the locked courtyard with table for breakfast and dinner, and the room had all the necessary amenities. Great stay and will definitely be back!
4.6
Cozy simple spot. Close to beach & whatever you need. Huge bonus of park & trails next door. Will do ut again!

This rental is super simple but was perfect for my pup and I! Loved how close it was to everything

Inside the property was immaculate, even though it appears to be an older building there was not a bug in sight. It was perfect for myself and my dog. I felt safe and enjoyed taking my dog next-door to Fairview Park. A couple of notes for future travelers would be to bring a little bit of foil so you could use the toaster oven without having to scrub, bring any special utensils, such as corkscrew and can opener, and it can get a little loud, especially in the morning. We will definitely be back!

Easy to find in a quiet neighborhood. The room was as shown online minus the coffee maker. After several unanswered text messages the next day the host introduced himself and within minutes we had a coffee maker. Each apartment had individual outdoor space, which was nice. The lock on the apartment didn't work, but the security screen door to the outdoor space locked, so it was safe. The last night we didn't have internet,
which meant no TV streaming either. But we didn't really need it and it didn't bother us.
For the price it is a very good deal. Quiet and clean.

Not even sure where to begin…I didn’t receive any check in information until the last minute after reaching out to the hosts. I had a courtyard with a lockable door but the actual room would not lock. I asked two different hosts for help with the lock and was told by one that there was a stick to put in the door while I was in there but there was no way to lock the room while I was out.
There was a party of 3 going on in the wrong suite next door and when the actual renters of the suite arrived, the host moved them to another room while the actual renter had to wait an hour to get into their suite after I had to reach out to the on behalf of the rightful renter who did not have the contact information.
The heat did not work, evenings got pretty chilly and I had one quilt.
While trying to close the curtains, the curtain rod fell on me as it was held together by black electrical tape.
The second day I arrived back to the accommodations, I discovered that the glass top patio table had been taken away but received no explanation as to why or where it had gone.
The final insult was receiving a call at 6:40 am from one of the hosts asking if it was my car with Nevada plates that was parked in their drive. One minute of research would have shown him I was an International traveler and it was unlikely to be my car. I received a muttered apology and he hung up.
I have never in my life of traveling had such a universally disappointing stay for paid accommodations. VRBO might want to vet their hosts a bit more carefully in future.

Next door to a nature preserve, this apartment is convenient and the weather is superb. I really enjoyed using the patio as my office on sunny afternoons. Kind and friendly host is available to answer questions and help out. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Thank you!

Floor plan is similar to a hotel but with a large patio. I specifically rented for the large patio for my dogs. The entrance to Fairview Park is just a few steps away and my dogs loved all the new smells.
The unit was clean with no musty smell. The unit included utensils, glasses, paper cups for coffee, hand soap, towels and plenty of toilet paper. There are 2 coffee makers, Keurig and Mr Coffee (coffee and filters provided) as well as a microwave and mini fridge. (Tip…To make fridge colder, you will need to adjust the dial on the back of the fridge). I didn’t use the community kitchen but there is a direct entrance from the unit.
There is a lot of foliage surrounding the unit so you have privacy from the street. Overall, the unit is quiet with some minor car traffic noise during the day with cars entering/exiting the park and school next door. At night it is silent which was appreciated.
The main entrance is through a locked gate that leads to the patio. The unit entrance is a sliding door with a small latch with hook to lock.
Owner does live on the property. Instructions on how to gain access were clear. Key to the gate entrance was left inside the unit on the fireplace mantle. Gate has dual locks and I had no issues gaining entrance.
FYI (in case you rent): There are 2 remotes to TV. Small remote turns on and controls volume on TV. The large remote is to access Spectrum cable.

Has a lot of potential. Gorgeous patio. Room is decently cozy. My problem was the cleanliness. Sheets were obviously not cleaned, there were visible stains. Shower mats felt used. If you’re not careful you will walk into the dome huge spider and their webs in the dark entry way. The host was responsive, but check in process was unclear. “Keys should be in the unit” does not make me feel comfortable. More information about the little things is important also, such as if there a gate code, will it be locked after a certain time because I’m flying in late, which WiFi network is it and what’s the password, which parking spot am I ok in etc, I needed a bit more up front clarity. I had to text them asking what they passcode was, and they were prompt to respond as it was late at night. The front patio area was really pretty. Great for sunbathing. I want to love this property but the cleanliness of the bed, floor, shower left a lot to be desired. Great tv with roku. The area has gorgeous walking trails and a crisp feel in the mornings. Quiet except for the occasional pound against the wall and a domestic dispute. I enjoyed the centrality to Huntington Beach.

This listing has great potential, but comes in far under par. Itemized details as follows:
Booking: my experience booking the listing should have been a sign. The property was available and I requested to book it. VRBO stated I would hear back within 24-hours to confirm. Immediately after requesting to book, I sent the host a message because I had a special request. They did not respond until the next day close to the 24-hour deadline and they said they could accommodate my request, but they asked me to cancel this booking and request a new one. I, regretfully now, didn’t ask questions and just did as they asked. Only to find that I was double charged.
Communication: host is not responsive. Several of my messages went unanswered the first and second time asking. The only time the host seemed concerned with contacting me was after we had left and host claimed the fire alarm went off (take note in my property description below, fire alarm was not operable).
Check-in: they did not provide instructions. I messaged several times before the date of check-in what the process was with no reply. They finally text 2 hours prior to check in with “the keys should be in the room”
Property: the neighborhood is quaint and adorable and I’m more than familiar with as I’ve had family living there for over 10 years. Neighbors were loud, but not during quiet times. Strong smell of marijuana, which doesn’t bother me but should be noted.
Room: has so much potential. Smaller than represented in the listing. Had not been cleaned in who knows how long. Spider webs and rust everywhere. Dirty towels, the “courtyard” described in the listing is full of trash and old junk. The mini-fridge was not running and smelled of mold. The outside furniture is old & would fall apart if used. Fire alarm was lying in the closet, which they call the kitchenette, not working or attached to anything. Linens did not smell or seem washed. There were no extra supplies or any cleaning supplies. No broom to sweep up the sand we brought from the beach. One roll of toilet paper for a 3-night stay. Mo trash bags.
Overall: not worth the money you spend. A hotel or hostel will provide more. There is a cleaning fee, though it’s obvious the place hasn’t been cleaned in a long time. Poor communication. If this place was given some attention and love, it could be so much more.
