Perfect atmosphere, super friendly people

This is my second time here, and man... they never cease to blow away my expectations.
Breakfast, first of all, is 5 stars when it comes to what you expect from a "breakfast included" kind of situation. I mean, you get a breakfast bowl, followed by some lovely 2nd course (all accompanied with a perfect brew of coffee). Honestly better than any top hotel you could find. Usually alternates so you won't have the same thing day to day.
As for the dinner... it is an add on, but Auberge is — if you ask around town and beyond — famous for the dinner experience. I can't actually say I have had a better experience, and I have been to fine dining restaurants that are in the top 10 Worlds Best... I can't stress more, that you must have this experience. With the wine paring. I have never had such a unique and exciting experience dining.
The location is perfect! I love going up into the serene mountains and hills there while passing bear warning signs (this isn't sarcasm, I love being in real nature, not man-made).
Transport is also great! They take you back and forth to anywhere in Takayama as you need.
Lastly the staff are the nicest, kindest people ever! They have such depth and realness to them. It doesn't feel like there is a put on kind of courtesy or anything fake, they are all authentic and wonderful people!
A small stay discount on the dinner (maybe 5%) would be a great incentive to get people who are just staying a couple nights and don't know about the amazing dinner to give it a try! Otherwise I really can't complain about anything.

The staff, the design, diner and wines were amazing. The stay is really an experience and the people are so nice. We loved the admopshere (interior, music, surroundings etc.) Perfection. The Onsen is also really nice. We had a super relaxed an private moment. All in all we will definately come back!!
Matrasses were pretty hard. Maybe that's personal..

Wonderful B&B with tasteful interior and European vibe. Totally unexpected gem in this area with attention for detail. Excellent Mediterranean-influenced 5 course dinner. The Chef is a wine aficionado and does crazy wine pairings ;)
Be aware only shared bathrooms…

This is easily one of the best places I have ever stayed in. And I have traveled a lot.
The house is beautifully renovated, and furnished absolutely tastefully. Clean, simple lines, calm, attention to details, a Beauty, outside as well as inside. The colour scheme is warm, definitely warmer as the pictures on booking.com.
The shared bath is pretty new and great. Always clean and free when I wanted to use it.
The people are the heart of the house, and make you feel at home. They are attentive hosts, and they will drive you to and from Takayama at your convenience.
The food...oh! The food! It's something special: please make yourself a favour and reserve the dinner. You will get the chance to taste special wines too. I had dinner two times, and they both were superb.
It all felt luxurious and at the same time easygoing and relaxing. I cannot praise it enough.
I absolutely loved it. I note it here because it might be important to somebody: you will be staying in a home, please do not expect the rooms to be sound-proof. If you have neighbours, you will hear them.

This place and the whole team were exceptional. The setting, the interior design, the nice beds, the onsen- like bathroom experience all adds up to a unique atmosphere. The staff is amazing , speak English well, and always ready to help or to drive us to takayama station (10 minutes drive). And i saved the best for last : the food is amazing. Toshi the owner is a trained chef and worked many years in Italy. This results in Michelin star quality food, including home made bread. The value for money -7000 yen for 5 course dinner- is really good (don't bother trying to go into the city, this is probably better anyway). We just found the wine pairing very interesting, but a bit pricey (13000 yen per person). But then again, lots of high quality imported wines served with a lot of passion. Absolutely recommend this place if you want to visit takayama. Just to be able to experience the best of auberge, book at least 2 nights.

I like it that it’s away from the bustling central Takayama, but still close enough to head out during the day (about ¥1700 via local cab). It’s also near a very lovely local park, Harayama Kogen, with kiddy slopes for sleighing.
Absolutely nothing.

This place gave us a whole new experience! The wine pairing and food were spot on. Also, the breakfast was so filling! The location was great and the view from our room was amazing. Everything was just perfect!
None. But it would have been better if there was a full body mirror in the room.

The place is wonderfully designed and situated. It is a good example of how to translate the concept of a ryokan into modern times and give it a certain twist. There are many western elements, but it is nonetheless so Japanese in its gracious simplicity. This is also true for the dinner served, which is truly a marriage of Italian dishes with the Japanese eye for texture and presentation. The clue with the dinner is also the accompanying wines, which are specialty wines chosen to match the served dishes. Even for people accustomed to drinking wine this is really astonishing! I strongly recommend booking the dinner, you will really miss a treat if not. Finally, the owners are a family and they are extremely nice and accommodating. A shuttle service is provided from and to Takayama city, so you can enjoy the slightly remote location in the woods (the view from the bathroom into the trees is superb). 100% recommended, I‘d love to visit again.
There is nothing to complain that I could think of.

The lodging was nicely situated at the foot of a forest and it's nice to see so many trees and greenery. The outdoor seating areas were nice. Dinner was exceptional. All the courses - burrata, pasta, risotto, hida beef and tiramisu were well done and delicious. The bath was spacious and nice too. Really lovely inn.

This was our third stay at Auberge Hidanomori- that should speak for itself! We just keep going back. The rooms are stylish, quiet and cozy with comfy beds and a forest view out the window. The ambience inside the building is classy and has lots of nice design touches. Everything is super clean and tidy, and the bath rooms are spacious with a huge tub. The food...wow the food. You have to eat here. Breakfast is great but you'll want to stay for dinner. The staff are so friendly and attentive, it just makes the whole experience of being there pleasant. If you want to visit Takayama city or the surrounding countryside it's perfectly placed. Thanks again for having us, and we'll definitely be back!
Nothing at all.

The dinner and wine pairing were superb! Make sure to make a reservation beforehand because the restaurant was fully booked even on weekdays. The entire facility was spotless and the ambiance was very relaxing. The soundtrack, fragrances, decor - everything was perfectly coordinated. The hotel is right next to a park with a hiking trail and paragliding launch hill, so it was perfect for an evening hike to watch the sunsets. It’s also just a 15 minute drive to the historic town center, so very conveniently located. Wifi was also very fast. I had multiple video conferences with no problems.
The only thing I really felt was missing was an Japanese style wooden tub or hot spring style bath, but the western style communal bathroom with the jacuzzi was a close second to being perfect. It also would have been nice to have some bug repellant incense on the terrace because the mosquitos were brutal.

This was our 5th time to visit - it never ever disappoints. Absolutely perfect, quaint, quiet, modern, and the best food in Japan.
Nothing, just a perfect escape

As usual, this place doesn't disappoint. We love staying here - one of our favorite getaways in Japan. Another amazing multi course dinner with wine pairings.
Nothing, absolutely nothing.

Do book the dinner it is a wonderful experience. A feast for the eyes and mouth, prepared with love and passion. Exceptionally good value. Breakfast did not disappoint. The location and beauty of the property made this a must recommend. Well worth another visit or two or more. Highly recommended.
Only one thing I wish we should have stayed longer!

Will surely go again if I pass by Takayama.
All staff were very nice. The hotel is in countryside, I felt very relaxed by enjoy the nature.
Bathroom is shared but clean and the bath was comfortable with good temperature.
The hotel is a villa, I enjoyed the western design after several stops in Japanese style Ryokan. The style is simple but useful (you have all you need) and comfortable. Just like the style of their food served.
The chef is a real talent of Italien food, I was surprised to have a such a good, really Italian food in a Japanese countryside.
It's not easy to get to the hotel because of the location. But the hotel can pick you up from Takayama station or downtown. So it was not an issue. And so you can enjoy different Takayama style.

The staff was absolutely wonderful. It is a bit far from the center of town, so they pick you up at the station. They will drive you into town or to the Hida Folk Village. When you finish at the folk village, the bus stop is across the street so you can get into town, and at the end of the day the hotel will pick you up in town.
The rooms are very nice. Everything is fairly new and nicely decorated. When I told a member of the staff that I liked the paintings, she showed me a book of works by the same artist.
The food is excellent and served in a nice dining room with a fireplace. The chef studied and worked in Italy, and I believe he and his wife were chefs in Australia. (I hope I got that right.) So don't expect a traditional ryokan-style meal. You will get something very nice though. They tend to eat dinner earlier in Japan, so check what time you need to be back.
The owner's English is excellent.
There are at least two hot tubs (onsen) to soak in. You can have a private soak.
They will graciously prepare vegetarian or gluten-free meals. That's something special in Japan. Stay here. You will remember the friendly staff.
There was nothing that I thought needed improvement.
