Arrival and Sense of Place
Trees canopy the scenic, serene country road that winds through vineyards to reach The Manor House. The artisan crafted home is built of stone carved from the Haywood Winery grounds and hand cut by Portuguese and Mexican masons on site. It is an integral part of the landscape and feels as though it has sprung from the earth. The expansive yet warm, intimate home commands sweeping views of Los Chamisal Vineyards. Grapevines grow from the valley floor up and around embracing hillsides. Oak studded hilltops frame views.
The Manor House Today and How it Came to Be
A building saga that spanned nearly three decades, the Manor House emerged as a state-of-the-art four bedroom, four and one half-bath home, with features that recall times past including a soaring two story stone fireplace in the living dining area, and cozy dining area in the professional well-equipped kitchen. Architect Ivan Poutiatinem, who oversaw the project, inspired the counter level kitchen fireplace, one of his signature features. Three steps up from the sunken living area, the first level includes a master suite, queen suite, television room, powder room and laundry room. The staircase, a masterpiece unto itself, features hand built quarter sawn vertical grain fir railing. The climb to the second floor reveals views of the home’s astounding stonework, woodwork, artwork and furnishings. On the top floor, you’ll find the primary, master suite, the double twin suite, the twin room, and the window seat.
The Manor House took form through the artisanal hands of craftsmen from Portugal, Mexico and Sonoma. The first mammoth stones, forming the basement and one half of its first floor, were chiseled and placed by the master Portuguese craftsman, Ferranco Viara. With his passing, the project was silenced for nearly twenty years. Often taken as the ruins of an old winery it served as a set for commercials and the movie, Walk in the Clouds, and has been traversed by such cinematic greats as the late Anthony Quinn and Keanu Reeves.
Building code restrictions changed over time disallowing traditional stone construction. The determined Haywoods spent two years convincing County officials that a home built entirely of stone could be not only be earthquake proof, but could surpass any current building standards. Massive timbers tie the house together and concrete support structures veneered with stone support two corners, giving it the strength of a fortress.
Peter and Maggie Haywood assembled a new crew of craftsman and in the year 2000 the house began to grow again. The second generation of stonework melds beautifully with the original. Masons crafted the remainder of the 4900 square foot home, the living area’s two-story fireplace and innovative touches throughout such as the Neptune fountain near the massive front door. Local builder, Todd Summers, crafted the front door, staircase, window seats and stunning woodwork throughout the Manor House.
Knotty alder floors flow throughout the rooms. Reclaimed wood ceilings supported by huge, heavy timbers, soar above living areas. Interior walls are formed of hard, color imbedded plaster with round corners, and bathrooms are graced with marble. The thickness of the stone walls keeps the house temperate year round. A sophisticated radiant heating system supplies natural heat in winter and a complex fan system draws access heat out through vents in the roof. Every room is furnished with quality, antiques, lovingly sought and collected by Maggie Haywood, during the second phase of building. The dining table and and an antique twin bedroom set are heirlooms from Peter's family.
Views of the vineyards, hillsides, and native oaks abound from every room. Slate patios invite guests to step out and enjoy the outdoors. The estate is more than quintessential wine country; it embodies the heart of the winemaking family and their commitment to quality in all aspects of their lives. They invite guests who wish to immerse themselves in wine country culture for three days or more, to entertain, family, friends, and business associates, and to make the Manor House their own for a truly special experience.
Pool and Spa
The recent completion of a beautiful new pool, spa and terrance overlooking the vineyards adds even more magic to the ambiance of this special estate. The quality of construction and design compliments the unique characteristics and quality of the home. A charge for heating the pool if desired will be determined by the temperature of the water and the cost of propane to heat. A fee of $100 per day will then be charged to keep the pool at temperature. A fee of $75 per day will be charged to heat the spa during winter, and $50 per day for shoulder and high seasons, approximately April through October. These fees are not included in the fee structure as they are variable and optional. Guests will be required to sign a pool and spa waiver.

This is one of the most beautiful properties we’ve ever stayed at! Pictures can’t even begin to do it justice. We were a group of grandparents, adult children and their children. The house was spacious and the pool area looked like a 5-star resort.
The listing Indicated that there was air conditioning however there isn’t. I was quite concerned about this, however the manager was very thorough in explaining the process for the whole house fan. She was also incredibly accommodating in bringing additional fans even though we didn’t ask for them.
It was the perfect vacation!

This was a dream come true to stay in such a unique and beautiful property overlooking the exquisite vineyards. Our family LOVED this property. It was such a treat to disconnect from the world for a few days and spend quality time together. The outdoor space, pool and spa provided such glorious views during the day and nighttime. The stars were unbelievable! The host is top notch. They thought of everything and were very accommodating!! Truly an honor to stay at this Estate.

Our stay was incredible. The home was spacious and beautiful and had everything we needed. The views overlooking the vineyard were stunning. The pool and hot tub were amazing. It had perfect sunset views at night. The property manager, Pat, was so accommodating with us traveling with a 7 month old, and she provided so many helpful details about Sonoma as well. Book this property! You won’t regret it.

This was a beautiful and truly magical location to stay while in Sonoma. Arrival and first exploration of the property took our breath away as we felt as if we had stepped into a European villa. Well-appointed, peaceful, full of light, extremely comfortable and spacious rooms, natural surroundings, and that pool - fantastic! Communication with the host was stellar - you'll have everything you need and more. Truly hated to leave ~

We took our family to Sonoma to celebrate our 30 year anniversary. We chose this house based on the beautiful views, the ability to accommodate our family and the communication with the property manage prior to booking.
Upon arriving, we were amazed with the house and the beautiful views. The house fit our family very well from the layout to the outdoor living area. This house is highly recommended for a family or group of friends….

A very unique stay. The house is situated in the middle of a winery, on a hill, overlooking the valley. Tranquil and luxurious.

What a beautiful home in a beautiful setting. Very private and serene yet still very close to the Sonoma city center (less than 10 minute drive). Pat was very responsive and helpful. The house is very nice, felt like living in a castle.

My (now) wife and I recently stayed at the property for the weekend with some friends and family as our wedding was at a nearby winery.
Every one of us was blown away by the whole experience, from the quiet scenic location with stunning sunsets, to the rustic farm house feel, to the modern pool and spa.
We’d definitely stay again and will recommend to anyone travelling with a group/ with family to Sonoma.
Thanks Pat and the team.

The house is an absolutely beautiful and the pictures don’t do it justice. The house was well stocked and we truly enjoyed our stay!

Loved this place! The house was clean, spacious and well appointed. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the property had a lot of privacy but was close to town. Everything we needed to enjoy a wine weekend.

This property and surrounding views are absolutely incredible. The home is done in “old world” Italian, (or French?) but everything is brand new and very high end. The huge windows in every room highlight the surreal views that surround the property. My husband and adult children and partners didn’t want to leave! The decor appears “castle like” on the online photos, but within a short time, it feels warm and homey. Sort of wish it was colder, so we could experience the heated floors! The pool was warm and comfortable, even without the heat on, and the hot tub had incredible star-gazing. We hired private chefs one night, and it was so great to come back to the house after wine tasting all day and eat a delicious professionally prepared meal in the home. Coffee on the patio every morning next to the landscaping of florals, gorgeous herbs and large trees - surrounded by wine country hills and valleys was so relaxing. Only the sounds of an occasional bird broke the silence. The house had everything we needed and more. I really hope to come back!

The listing does not do this property justice. The view is incredible. The house was beautiful and more than big enough for four couples to enjoy a quiet weekend in wine country. Every amenity we needed was available and access to a heated spa and pool was such an incredible bonus. The house is just a short drive into Sonoma Plaza but felt like we were off in our own world. We ended up cancelling plans for one of our evenings just to enjoy the time together at the house as much as we could. Thank you for a perfect few days with friends in such a beautiful place.

We were so fortunate to find this listing while in Sonoma for our Son’s Wedding. The property is stunning and the whole experience could not have been better . Thank You to the Haywood’s hospitality for allowing us to share in what will be a life long memory .

Where to start, just a stunning property overall. The home is one of a kind with some great history behind it. Extremely comfortable and well appointed for our group of 6. Pool and hot tub area was great, grounds were extremely well maintained with flowers galore. The views from the back of the home are just amazing. Quintessential Sonoma wine country vista. Highly, highly recommend this home for your visit to wine country. You will not be disappointed. Only drawback might be that you may just want to stay at the house to soak it all in rather than venturing out to all the great things Sonoma has to offer :)

Stayed for a long weekend with friends from all across the country. We’ve been to many places together but this place was exceptional. The views and location and amazing. It is so close to Sonoma yet has the space and views anyone wants. You do have to have a car. The house is beautiful and spacious. Perfect for our group of eight women- old college friends having a yearly reunion. The rooms and beds were comfortable and beautiful. The kitchen and common areas were very well appointed with everything we needed. Would highly recommend and will definitely be staying again.

Celebrated my sisters 50th with a total of 4 couples. Only downside was one of the bedrooms had 2 twin beds vs a queen/king, but we knew that when we reserved. But all 4 bedrooms had en suites, there are 2 other rooms that had sleeping arrangements too if you were traveling with kids. The owner was VERY responsive and delightful. Don’t hesitate to reserve this chateau!!

We loved this home and the warmth it provided for our stay. We hiked the vineyards, the roads all the way to the top and took advantage of being close to Sonoma Square. The bath products and linens are high quality. Beds are very comfortable. The property has stunning views and is very remote all while being close to the square which we really enjoyed. The views are stunning! We had a great experience here and cannot wait for the gorgeous pool to be completed!

This is the perfect pairing for a wine tasting weekend. The location was fantastic, the grounds were breathtaking and the home was extraordinarily. I would not have wanted to be anywhere else in Sonoma.

Couldn't ask for a better wine country experience!
We loved our time at the Manor. The picturesque scenery was breathtaking, the house was clean & spacious. We will definitely be coming here again!
The only notes would be to pay attention to the house instructions regarding cooling the house down by opening the windows at night. We got in late our 1st night and neglected to do that so our first day was a bit warm but quickly solved when we followed the instructions the following evening.
Thank you for the excellent hospitality! Can't wait to come back once the pool is finished :)

A Vineyard Paradise
Beautiful five star. We received the VIP treatment at Haywood Manor. The house itself is crafted to appear as an old Tuscan villa but has every modern convenience. Except air conditioning. While we were there the high was over 100, rare for Sonoma, but the house remained comfortable. The upstairs was warm.
The views were incredible and so peaceful. We loved sitting outside.

Dream chateau in wine country
A beautiful chateau- like guest house surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills. Immaculate flower laden grounds with a lovely terrace to take in the views. The home itself is immaculate, sumptuously furnished with comfortable, elegant furniture, beautiful tapestries, perfectly emitting the feel of a 17th century European manor house. An absolutely incredible stay.

The building is take-your-breath-away exquisite. There were only 5 of us (2 others canceled due to the pandemic) and we had ample room. Although it was cold and rainy while we were there, the fireplace in the living room provided us with warmth and lovely ambiance. (Actually, the house itself was never cold.) The gorgeous kitchen has a perfectly-sized table that easily served as a board game space. The longer dining room/living room table was perfect for the night we had 4 others join us for dinner. Stunning views remind me of Tuscany. Lovely walks from the property - there were a number of people out walking the narrow road, and drivers were appropriately careful. The property is close to downtown Sonoma and within easy reach of a number of wineries in the area. The manager was responsive and easy to communicate with. Cell reception was definitely spotty and the wifi slow but I can't wait to return to this lovely property!
