About this cabin rental
Find your happy place with the whole family (or families!) at this relaxing Cabin at the Lake, affectionately known as Bessie. 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, & 3000 sq/ft of pure peace in the heart of Canaan Valley. Close to skiing, great hiking and biking, the unique charms of Davis & Thomas, Blackwater Falls, Dolly Sods Wilderness and everything else the Valley has to offer. Come once, come often.. you'll absolutely fall in love with Canaan, just like we did. We can't wait to share it with you. Please see our guidebook for a full review of the food, sights, and sounds of the Valley. We think you'll love it out here as much as we do.
Bessie is located a few miles south of Davis, making it perfectly positioned for access to hiking, skiing, and shopping in the towns. Sitting right on Mallow Lake, you can roll right out of bed onto a paddle board or kayak for some morning exercise. Or just prop your feet up for some great bonding time with family and friends in this upscale cabin, which has recently been updated with new furniture, appliances, kitchen counters, and bathroom vanities.
This space has been created with families having two and four legged children in mind. There are retractable baby gates that can be used to block stairs on the main floor, with a pack n' play, baby monitor, changing table, and booster seat available. Up to two dogs are absolutely welcome, and we have plenty of dog towels should your four-legged friends decide to chase the ducks into the lake. We have also equipped the home with family games and puzzles, books for adults and kids, children's toys, including an outdoor playhouse, and a dog bed and bowls for food and water.
During the summer months (and spring/fall, if you dare), you're welcome to enjoy the water, which is only accessible by members of our community. You may see your lake neighbors out fishing or paddle boarding as well. We'll provide a kayak and paddle board or two during the warmer weather, (although they are stored in the colder seasons), as well as fishing rods all year 'round (the lake is stocked with fish). Please understand that swimming, and any time in the water is spent at your own risk, as there is no lifeguard.
There's plenty of other ways to spend time outside, with a large outdoor dining table, Adirondack chairs, a fire pit out by the lake, and a charcoal grill & outdoor wood stove on the main deck, all for guest use. We do not provide charcoal for wood so please plan accordingly. There is also a common area in the community with a grill, covered picnic tables, wood burning fireplace, playground, and pond for additional water access!
Also note, the fireplace on the main level has not yet been approved for wood or gas burning and should not be used. The gas fireplace on the ground level is fully operational.
The house has two first aid kits on each of the two main levels. Contact info for emergency services is also posted in the house.
* Please note, for security purposes there are exterior cameras attached to the house capturing video & audio 24/7 in order to monitor each entrance to the house, as well as the parking area.

One of the best vacations my family has ever had. The house was beautiful. Fully stocked. It was clean and we just loved being on the lake. I can’t wait to come back.

This house has all the amenities and very private. We all especially enjoyed having our own space. My family enjoyed the fishing and caught a few large mouth bass. They did say they wished there were some catfish as they are fun to catch. We would definitely recommend this property. Thank you to the hosts!!

The setting of the property was beautiful. The property itself was a little junky around the exterior. Interior was not very clean, floors were quite dirty. We weren’t able to fully relax due to active cameras (not disclosed) in the listing that were recording on the outside of the house/deck areas. We did ask the owner to disarm them during our stay which he did but then we were always wondering if there were any interior cameras. We did bring two dogs which the house was very accommodating for but with the home being on the lake there was goose poop everywhere. The house is in a great location, very quite neighborhood which was nice and overlooking a beautiful pond. It was also well stocked. If it weren’t for the lack of cleanliness and the active camera situation we would have absolutely loved our stay.

Quiet and serene. Short drive to multiple parks and trails. This property's backyard is a lake which we had fun doing some fishing and catching some fish!
Nightly sunset and stargazing! A complete hit with our family.

We really enjoyed our stay at Bessie! The host was super accommodating and allowed up to check in early after an early flight from Fl. We enjoyed the location which was near two ski resorts and plenty of hiking near Blackwater Falls. The view was gorgeous and the house had everything from toys for the kids to dog beds for the dogs. The host thought of everything!

Bryan’s home is clean comfortable and well-appointed. The downstairs bunk rooms make the home ideal for large families and/or groups of individuals.

Beautiful scenery all around this home. Snow storm arrived shortly after we did. HVAC kept us very comfortable. Excellent location for year-round outdoor events.

We had a wonderful weekend. The owners have tried to think of everything guest may need. The fish were biting well...that is always a plus.

We spent a long weekend in Davis and the house was perfect. It was very clean and just how it was described. We would definitely stay here again.

House was very nice, with excellent views. The lake was beautiful and teaming with fish and geese. Hardwood floors were a bit dirty on the main floor, but everything else was clean. Owner was very responsive when contacted, and there was a bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived. I think it was the best house on the lake! We are looking at our calendars right now wanting to go back!

Bessie is located in a beautiful and peaceful area on a lake in the mountains. The home is clean, well stocked and both dog and child- friendly. Lots of activities for all seasons nearby plus Blackwater Falls State Park and shopping in the quaint town of Davis. We were 8 adults and 2 dogs, all family but from multiple households. The main floor was great for meals and when we all wanted to be together. There was also ample space for quiet personal time. Plus a wall of windows and a deck on the lake side. It was everything we hoped for and plan to return. The owner was friendly and responded quickly to my questions. Your search is over—book it now 😁

This was such a great place to stay and wonderful hosts. The pictures really don't do it justice. Wonderful house, nice quiet area, great walks around the lake and across the farm.
We came up for our kids' spring break, intending to ski at Canaan Valley and Timberline. Both closed for the week due to weather and we almost didn't want to come... We are so glad we did, it was a wonderful place to stay. This is my first choice for next ski season, and also if we were to come up for the summer.
I'm a huge fan.

We had a wonderful weekend with family in Canaan Valley. Bessie is a beautiful family friendly home. The layout is perfect for a multi-generational family. Plenty of room to spread out or hang together. It is the most well stocked and well equipped rental we've ever had. The view was the frozen lake was spectacular. The location between Canaan and Davis was perfect for us. We spent time at the ski slopes at Canaan State Park and the sled run at Black Water Falls. Davis and Thomas, the nearby towns, are fun to wander through, plus we had some good meals there.

We've staying in a lot of rental homes and you can always tell when it's a home or if it's a business. This is a home. The second we walked in, we felt like we had arrived at our new home. I have a baby that loves to crawl upstairs and then fall down them and there were baby gates. The view was spectacular, the bedrooms were huge and so comfortable. We traveled with 3 families, 8 children. So. Many. Kids. And the house never felt cramped. The dining room table was large enough for us to all sit down and eat dinner together. the kitchen was stocked, we had plenty of everything we could need. We want to come back for every season. We came up to go sledding at Blackwater state park and this house was only 20 minutes away. It was perfect. Brian was an amazing host, he was prompt in his message responses and extremely accommodating. The kids never wanted to leave and neither did the adults. Can't wait to go back in the summer to enjoy the lake!
