The food was acceptable.
The building is in poor repair and in desperate need of refurbishment. The kitchen facilities only operated part time. The hot food was served late at Breakfast every morning, meaning that I had to make do with the slim offerings on the continental breakfast for half of my stay. The hot breakfast buffet and restaurant facility was only available on certain days. There were no alcohol sales on the premises. It was run with a skeleton staff, some of whom were very pleasant but other, apparently senior staff, gave the impression they would rather be somewhere else. I was travelling for business and had very little choice but to accept the vastly over inflated rates that are being charged for this sub standard hotel. There are many far superior alternatives available on Orkney at a much more reasonable cost, at other times of year. This hotel ( which I understand closes over the winter months) is taking advantage of the general shortage of accommodation on the island during busy seasons without making any effort to improve or invest in their aged facilities. Very disappointed.

Schönes altes Hotel mit nostalgischem Charm, u. a.

The receptionist was lovely, the hotel was clean.
The bed was extremely uncomfortable, I could feel the springs in the mattress, I didn't sleep well at all. The window wouldn't shut either.

It was close to where I was working. The breakfast was good and the staff at breakfast (the only staff I came into contact with) were friendly and helpful.
The lack of restaurant or bar was really annoying as everywhere else was really busy. The whole hotel was just 'tired' and in desperate need of renovation. Mould on the window frame, the shower in the room was very weak and kept going from hot to cold without warning. Noise also carried significantly through what seemed like paper-thin walls.

the hotel is down by the harbour in the heart of stromness. the rooms are from an other time, which adds to the charm of the hotel. the beds where comfortabele and clean. the staff where very polite and helpful.
we will be happy to stay a night at the stromness hotel 🙂
there is nothing negative to say!

The hotel staff were excellent. They had been landed with a difficult situation as the Payman organisation had booked an enormous party into the hotel without thinking of the consequences for other guests - eg noisy corridors at 12.30 am, inadequate room for breakfast. The staff worked hard to ensure that we were well looked after
The hotel is an interesting old hotel and the refurbished rooms are very comfortable
The local staff dealt admirably with the problems mentioned above but the Payman organisation needs to think about delivering a quality service rather than just making money.
Also, the situation in which almost every question had to be relayed to the Payman organisation makes it challenging for the hotel staff to deal with issues which arise in the hotel.
I don,'t think we'll return because we don't want to support an organisation such as Payman which is appears to be primarily about making money and not treating its staff very well or giving them the autonomy to deal with local situations

Like the breakfast but it was very limited
More options for vegetarians

The location is excellent, right in the centre and nr the ferry. The staff were very helpful, polite and responsive. It was clean and the room was big, comfy beds and decent shower over bath.
They really should say it's dry at booking (I don't drink but husband wasn't impressed). We didn't want breakfast so that didn't bother us but it would be good to have option. It's not clear if the car park is real or not - it is, we found it! And round the back, not a great entrance via a fire door to it.

Breakfast was continental and traditional. The cooked breakfast was soaked in olive oil and the scrambled egg, well, what exactly was it???
Food, facilities, no lounge room

Lovely big family room. Good location. Good breakfast. Friendly staff. Great views from the hotel of Stromness. Very clean.
A lounge area would of been good. Didn't have a bar but that was Ok because it was nice and quiet. Would of been good to sit somewhere for a coffee instead of the room.

Room is clean; location is convenient; WiFi works well
Needed somewhere to stay in Stromness before catching the boat south in the morning to go to a funeral. Booked this, and as soon as the confirmation email came through, I realised that I must have been distracted as I'd booked for the Wednesday night instead of the Monday. Picked up the phone and called the hotel only to be told that I had to go via Booking.com. Had a look there and it said I could change the date of my reservation -- but then it told me there were no rooms available for Monday. Started a new search and found there were rooms for Monday. Booked one and paid for it. Then sent a message to the hotel via Booking.com requesting a refund for the first incorrect booking as I had now made a new booking -- and the hotel emailed back and said no.
Checked in just now and explained all this to the woman on the desk thinking that now that I actually had a human being in front of me surely we could sort all this out sensibly. No such luck. And when I said that this level of unhelpfulness was not very Orcadian of her, her reply was, "This isn't Orkney." What? Last time I checked, Stromness very much was. And the two other places I have stayed in Stromness have both been extremely welcoming and friendly and helpful.
Don't stay here. I made an honest mistake -- we all do from time to time -- but to be met with this level of surliness when I tried to sort it out -- this is the sort of thing I came to Orkney to get away from. These people don't deserve your money.

decent bed, room reasonably clean
Gloomy hotel, poor reception, no staff around. Outrageously expensive, £150 per night then breakfast would be extra £20. No welcome pack in room - cheap samples of shower gel & shampoo. No fridge, no water provided. Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in.

The bed room. Convenient location. Nothing else.
Called a hotel, it is not. Neither lunch not supper / dinner available. No bar, no sitting rooms. Nowhere where guests can mix together and chat.
Arrived to be told breakfast an extra £15, making (I recall) £130 for a one person one night stay. For that expensive, overpriced and no value for money.
If coming by ferry from Thurso on the mainland, much better to spend the night at Thurso's Premier Inn and then catch the first ferry in the morning to Stromness.

The hotel is just walking distance to the pier and coop shop. there are a lot of restaurants around the area as well. A perfect place if you want to explore around orkney's highlights such as skara brea, ring of brodgar and yesnaby cliffs. there is a cycle hire near the hotel as bus times are really hard to come by. I like my room, despite is budget friendly, it has the view of the sea and a decent space. Receptionist Ula is amazing and approachable, she greeted me at the entrance and oriented me to the place such as fire exit, alarm tests (at a certain day) and the restaurant for breakfast, shes also knowledgeable around the area. There are other workers during that time as they are doing a bit of renovation but everyone is friendly and welcoming. the renovation didnt bother me at all. i had a good nights sleep and the bed is so comfortable. The second day I met Ellie, another receptionist which is also great, we had a good conversation about Orkney. would come back again and definitely book to this place again

It was an excellent experience to stay at this hotel. The building was built in 1901 and was slightly renovated in the 1970s, but the feel is still original. It is like staying in Hercule Poirot series. The staff is really helpful.

I was welcomed late on in the evening and showed to my room, I could not fault the helpfulness of staff, and the room was clean and warm, I will definitely stay here again in the future.
I was not told about any Wifi, Although I did arrive late in the evening so not a problem.

historic and solid hotel. old style finishing sand meal
service. superb!
alcohol has disappeared making it hard for the hotel to compete locally. such a shame and is shortsighted. I am not a drinker but enjoy wine with my evening meal

the historic ambiance was very nice. the building condition leaves a lot to be desired. either fix it up or tear it down. the staff is wonderful and trying to deal with the poor image as discussed with local retailers.
the smells, the antiquated lift, poor lighting, no 3rd floor water pressure, when we’re the draperies last cleaned, cold hallways, no ice, can’t serve drinks,

very central - staff very helpful - could n’t do enough for us.
a bit run down and no bar

Hard to say
The building smells awful stale tobacco and mould. It hasn't been decorated since the 70s. We saw 1 lady on check in and no one on check out. It is almost a flop house

Location! If you are heading to the mainland from the Orkneys, this hotel is 2 minutes from the Ferry docks. Food was amazing, the dinning room was cozy and the help was courteous and very nice.
Nothing, everything was great!

William Robertson, Trevor Holmes, Natasha Thoroughgood, and Gary McNamee did not like the hotel at all! the rooms were in very bad condition. the guests reported they have been bitten by bugs and @they will not let their dogs even sleep in that hotel. Very very poor condition of the rooms and bathroom, the rooms were dirty and not cleaned at all! Pictures on the website do not match with what the real condition of the hotel is in! the hotel looked very luxurious and nice in the pictures but when the guests arrived and slept one night the next day they did not want to go back. Very bad-rated hotel.

The Stromness Hotel location is excellent for public transport to Scrabster (90 minutes,) Hoy (30 minutes,) X1 bus to Ring of Brodgar, Ness of Brogdar, Standing Stones of Stenness (12 minutes,) Maes Howe tomb and Kirkwall and the 8S bus to Skara Brae. The Stromness Hotel is clean, dry and offers a comfortable roof over your head from the Orkadian weather.
The Entrance on the Ground floor needs updated to be more welcoming and clearer to newcomers, reception on the 1st floor. First impressions is that the hotel is tired.

Tired decor. Tv had no channels and was small. Hotel had a lovely old vibe to it but needed a lick of paint and a bathroom update
