About this cottage rental
Originally an old miner's cottage, Schatzi's on Shalimah is a fully renovated two bedroom cottage. It is set up as a quiet couple's weekender however the second bedroom can be made available at a small extra cost for a small group seeking a Hunter getaway.
**Please note that booking for 2 people implies that only 1 bedroom will be required, you need to book for 3 people and therefore pay a small additional nightly charge for access to the 2nd bedroom.
The large yard is fully enclosed with lovely lawns and shading trees for both pets and owners to while away their time when not busy sampling the wares of the many nearby wineries. A newly installed deck offers additional living space and a lovely spot to relax with a beverage of choice. The backyard has fencing ranging from 150-180cm high. We have made it as dog-proof as possible but if your dog is a determined digger or jumper this may not necessarily hold them.
Inside
The cottage has all the mod cons including luxuriously appointed bathroom with heating and spa bath and includes a European laundry. The kitchen is well fitted out and includes fridge, microwave, electric oven, gas cooktop and even an espresso machine! Coffee plunger, other electrical items and a variety of quality pots, pans and utensils sets you up for a stay of any length.
In the evening the lounge is a cosy space with reverse cycle air con, large LCD TV, DVD player and CD player. Open the blinds and the 4m sliding doors open up a whole new space and vista with a large deck barbeque and dining setting complete with swing seats for a quirky taste of the Caribbean.
Both rentable bedrooms (there's a 3rd bedroom which is not accessible to guests) have queen beds, wardrobes/storage space and reverse-cycle air con as well as pedestal fans for simple air-flow.
Pets
Well behaved pets are most welcome both in the large yard and also in the house. There is no limit on size or number however all pet parents are expected to pick up all faeces from the yard and to ensure that pets don't toilet in the house. Pets must be supervised at all times (even if you bring Dogga's own bed, being left in a strange house is very stressful) or they can be left in the yard or within the Doggy Space. This space is the bathroom us the Small hall space outside of the bathroom. When at home with your pets, please ensure that the throws provided are used to protect the furniture. All dogs will want to 'plump up the couch's by scratching at it and it's your job to ensure that they don't. Having Dogga Parents who are thoughtful and respectful enables us to continue to have pets in the cottage with their family
Location
A lovely park is just a minute's walk away with Vincent Street (the hub of the town) within 5 minutes walk. Here you can enjoy breakfast or just a coffee at one of the many dog friendly cafes. A range of pubs and restaurants, also in walking distance, have a fabulous array of food with some venues also offering music on weekends. East Cessnock Bowling Club is literally at the end of the street but with surprisingly little impact on guests at Schatzi's. Walks around the area are peaceful and pretty, even though in town we have fields very close by where Kangaroos can often be seen, especially in the warmer months.
The neighbourhood
Our neighbours have been there long before we bought our lovely cottage and they are lovely, friendly and helpful but will be respectful of your space and privacy.

We loved our stay and found the property to be comfortable and conveniently located. Great sized yard and the house had everything we needed.

Overall lovely experience! Great back yard for our little dog (we barely saw him) far enough away from everything so it’s quiet but still close to all the necessities.

This is the second time in 2 years that we have stayed here, it is so central to the vineyards whilst also being off the main roads of Cessnock, the hosts accommodate people travelling with their dog, the house is well set up, there is a lovely outdoor area, safe yard for dog with a safe indoor area for a dog to stay in also, we enjoy it here and will return again next year!

My partner and I along with my Netherland dwarf rabbit Thumper stayed for the weekend. Location was great near all amenities and not far from wineries. Pick up and drop off from this location for wine tours. Instructions easy to follow, place was well accommodating for pets. Quiet street and everything in walking distance you need. Partner and I want to stay there again... probably to try out the jet spa 😉...overall we enjoyed our stay.

We enjoyed staying in this cottage, the place is basic but has all you need, including AC in rooms and living area.
Both the owner and the manager were excellent in communication and so easy to get in touch with.
This is a true pet friendly place with a huge secure yard, the minimal rules that apply to staying there with dogs are very sensible and not a lot different from what I would do at home. If you are considering visiting this beautiful area with your dogs I would definitely recommend this place.

Was a lovely, renovated miner’s cottage with many modern conveniences, including air con in the bedrooms & lounge room. The street was quiet, with lots of visiting birdlife & both of our cats were welcome & enjoyed their stay. Short drive to nearby wineries & restaurants in both Lovedale & Pokolbin. Could walk to Cessnock town centre or the nearby Bowling Club if you wished. Had a slight glitch checking in due to not receiving instructions from Stayz as advised, however Co-Host Sally-Anne ended up coming to the rescue eventually & gave us a late checkout for the inconvenience, which we appreciated. Only complaint was that there was rubbish from the previous tenant left on top of where the garbage bin was in the kitchen cupboard & this had not been picked up or removed by the cleaners & the front lawn inside the property could’ve done with a mow. We all had an enjoyable, peaceful stay & would happily stay here again.

My husband and I brought our small dog and a friend to stay for 2 nights. Our friend was celebrating her 60th birthday. The cottage was very comfortable. Rob cooked 2 dinners and we had a relaxing time. 20 minutes or so from the particular wineries we wished to revisit. We had lunch at Bistro Molines where we had our wedding and reception 12 years ago. Just a fun time was had by all.

Property was as described. No issues with anything to do with the property.
However, a few days after our booking ended Maria made very strange accusations that didn’t even make sense. Something about it being obvious that we used the vaccum cleaner to to clean bubbles from the bathtub. Nonsense and baseless accusations in an attempt to claim our deposit. She said she’d give us a break and not charge for a new vaccum and only take the deposit to which I absolutely would not accept. Upon reading all reviews it seems this is something that “Maria” has attempted on numerous occasions. Although we enjoyed our stay we would never rent this property again due to the unscrupulous owners bizarre accusations. Btw we left the home in immaculate clean condition when we left, as if it was own own home.
My recommendation would be to look elsewhere for a rental in the area.

We enjoyed 3 weeks in this renovated miner's cottage. Despite the heat, the air conditioning was very effective. Maria was helpful and easy to communicate with. Thanks for allowing us to stay.

This is a good little house close to Cessnock town centre but on a quiet street. The large open up doors to the patio made a nice place to relax. Great that the dogs were welcome with us. Having a coffee machine and then no coffee beans, and in fact not even any instant coffee just cappuccino packets was disappointing- we bought and left a little jar of Nescafé at least for the next person!

An old cottage with some modernisation but definitely needed some TLC! Our stay coincided with a lot of rain and backyard not accessible for a small dog due to long grass and front driveway was very muddy and inconvenient having to open and close gates in rain and mud. It served us well for the 4 nights though and a lot of thought gone into the pet friendly aspect of the property.

A quaint little house to stay in whilst visiting the hunger. Very spacious for the number of guests, and the back yard is huge! My dog had the best time playing fetch and running around there in the morning.

Great location & great for dogs.
This was our second visit and we came back due to location to the valley and the amazing yard for our dog. You can easily walk in to town or to the club at the end of the street as well. The yard is like Disneyland for dogs!!

Excellent place for dogs (if it doesn't rain)
The place is really nice and has a great backyard for those who travel with dogs. Big and nice spa tube and bathroom. Beautiful old stove (but only as decoration).
The only complication was to leave our dog in a tiny designated space inside of the house (when parents are not in the house) because it was raining and we went out for dinner.
To work around this problem, we went for a long bushwalk with her (which she loved) and she was happy to stay and sleep.
The outdoor dining area is a great place to have breakfast or dinner, quiet and relaxing.
The house is close to shops. We would definitely go back to the same place.

Absolutely loved this property would definitely stay again.
Would definately book this property again, absolutely brilliant. Firstly the owner sent through extremely thorough information about the property and no only did it allow for dogs but also accomdated them inside. There were blankets for furniture and plenty of dog bogs. The yard was brilliant for both animals and humans, loved the swing seats on the balcony. Property was very well kept and presented and spacious. Loved the spa bath!!! I would definitely recommend this property to anyone with pets, family and friends wanting a hunter retreat.
