Our family consisted of grandparents, parents and 2 children 5 and 2. We loved staying at this property. The house layout was spacious, comfortable and everything was clean. The abundance of wildlife was fabulaoous (kangaroos, different birds and guinea fowl).
Facilities for cooking inside was excellent. There is easy access to Portland, Wallerawang and Lithgow for pubs, lunch/dinner, IGA, etc...
The hosts were very friendly and helpful.
We highly recommend this wonderful property.

The house in Portland was very clean and comfortable. It had everything we needed. Barbara and Ian gave us a tour of the house and answered all our questions. One of the best things was having the kangaroos and birdlife to watch while having breakfast. It used to be a nature reserve so the animals come and go freely. We would definitely recommend this place for overseas visitors or people needing a quiet, relaxing place to stay.

The perfect getaway
My friends and I would highly recommend this property as the ideal getaway in every way. The property was spotless and every comfort was available for all ages. Ian and Barb are the best hosts that you could meet and we are already arranging another visit for later this year

GREAT PORTLAND EXPERIENCE
This property was an exceptional purpose-built holiday home with excellent facilities and a great floor plan. We had TVs in 5 locations, Air con, great towels, near new fittings and comfort in every room. The living area overlooked the resident Kangaroos that gave us plenty of entertainment on the spacious lawns. Hosts were welcoming and helpful. Close to town and central to many sites in the area. The owners virtually thought of everything.

Holiday to remember
Stayed with my wife and 2 boys from the 30th of December until the 2nd of January. Barbara and Ian were such lovely hosts and very easy to communicate with. The property was very well maintained and very clean. Everything from the rooms to kitchen utensils were spotless. The boys loved the barbecue, the bonfire and stargazing. It was a good place for doing astrophotography and seeing kangaroos everyday was a bonus. The place had very easy access to the town proper and an excellent jump off point to explore the adjacent Sunny Corner State Forest, the town of Glen Davis and the Capertee Valley. This property is very highly recommended and we would love to return.

We absolutely loved our stay at this picturesque property, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The home was very comfortable and the owners, Barbara and Ian made us feel so welcome and at ease. Lithgow town centre was only a 20 minute drive away. Our little ones loved watching the kangaroos on the property and had a great time.We can't wait to go back for another holiday!

Super house!
This place had everything, not just what was listed. Birds and kangaroos included. Kids loved the cute visitors! there were heaps of toys that kept them entertained. We loved cooking in the big kitchen, having afternoon drinks outside, and just walking around. Kids begged us to come back, and we definitely will!

Wonderful stay
Modern, bright, beautiful house in middle of a big property surrounded by tree & bush. This place offers a tranquil haven of peace and serenity, away from the bustle of the city.
The house has everything you need: three big bedrooms, a large living area, fully equipped kitchen and capsule coffee machine.
Me & my friends thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. A perfect place to relax after a full day visit to the Japanese Spa Bath.
Everything was sparkling clean, beds were very comfortable. Outside fire pit was the best idea to enjoy the beautiful setting of the house.
We will definitely come back & stay with our families.

Such an impressive accommodation with beautiful surroundings, wildlife and not too far from Lithgow and Portland.
The house is clean, modern, child-friendly and comfortable. It has all the facilities you need and we especially enjoyed the big fireplace on the cold days and nights.
Barbara and Ian are very friendly and welcoming hosts. They were very helpful and ensured that the house is warm before we arrived. We had a lovely and relaxing stay thanks to their hospitality.
They are highly recommended hosts and we will certainly be back.

Portland getaway
Spent the 2 days at this property for the weekend 14-16 May 2021. What a fabulous property. The pictures are just as you see them online. We arrived late on Friday evening. My daughter arrived before us, and Barbara assisted them with the orientation to the house. Ian assisted with lighting the fire so we arrived to a lovely warm home.
We woke up on Saturday morning to find lots of kangaroos at our doorstep. The weather was not the greatest on Saturday with rain on and off but that did not deter us from sitting around the fire, toasting marshmallows, and just having a fabulous time.
We made a roast dinner in the oven which worked perfectly.
Barbara and Ian could not have been any more helpful. We are looking at booking the property again in July.
Thank you Barbara and Ian for sharing your home with us.

The hosts, the location and property were amazing- throw in perfect weather and you have the perfect stay. Barbara and Ian are amazing hosts, the home has everything you need and even the land was giving... as a family we picked blackberries, slippery jack mushrooms, rigg mushrooms, pears and rosehips - the children had a wonderful experience on the property. We had a brilliant stay and visited one of a few lakes close by, the local township and the state forest, but by far the home and hosts were our favourite which we cannot praise enough! Looking forward to returning and trying our hand at gold panning on our next visit.

Perfect family holiday get away
We are a family of 6, 4 young kids under 10. We stayed at the Secret Refuge in July 2020.
We cannot praise the place enough! We had the most outstanding stay, everything in the house was thought out to the smallest detail. We really felt how much effort was put in by Ian and Barbara to make it comfortable and welcoming. From the moment you walk in it’s so clean, warm and kid friendly. Aside from the house itself being excellent, the outdoor areas are great for kids to play and we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and wildlife. Waking up every morning with Kangaroos at our window was a highlight!
Barbara and Ian were friendly and kind and gave us great advice about things to see and do in the area.
It’s everything we had hoped for and more when we booked the holiday.
We will strongly recommend the place to our friends and would love to come back in the future!

fantastic property
The house was fantastic and very comfortable with plenty of room for everyone with great amenities and those little touches that make a stay just that more comfortable. The bush setting and the presence of the birds, roos and wallabies was fabulous.
Barbara and Ian were very welcoming and provided support and ensured we were comfortable without being intrusive in any way.
We go on 3-4 getaways a year to numerous locations around Sydney and would not hesitate to recommend this fabulous location, we would all have liked to stay longer and would like to return on a moonless weekend (to see more of the stars) and during a less dry period to appreciate the local area in all its splendour.
A great few days in a terrific location, thank you for building the property and allowing us the pleasure of sampling it for a few days.

Hands Down, the Best HomeAway/AirBnB/Stayz We've Experienced
We stay in home/holiday rentals perhaps 15 times a year, and this was a fantastic experience.
The surroundings are lovely, but the home (brand new house, all mod cons, but semi-bush rural retreat) had every level of comfort. And then those little touches that make all the difference (tea/coffee supplies, ultrasoft towels and bedding, quality kitchen utensils, some A/C, lovely outdoor areas, dishwasher, dryer, etc etc etc). Bird feeders ensured plenty of colourful visitors, roos and wallabies everywhere, even a sandpit and toys for our toddlers.
Barb went out of her way to guide us to her place, ensure we were comfortable, provide other supprt and information, yet was completely unobtrusive.
We've stayed in some spectacular places overlooking escarpments, the sea, cities etc...but this place will remain long in the memory for going above and beyond.

Absolutely amazing getaway!!!
Barbara and Ian were fabulous hosts and they have done a fantastic job providing beautiful holiday accommodation to lucky guests. They went above and beyond our expectations to make our stay wonderful and we appreciate the extra mile they went to for us. The accommodation is brand new, luxurious and peaceful with everything you could possibly need on hand. We all enjoyed the families of Kangaroos that came to graze each day and being close to nature. Our 2 kids did not want to leave and wanted to 'stay forever', regretfully we left but we can't wait to start planning our next trip there to have a break and get out of the rat race again. Thanks again Barb and Ian!
