A visit to Brackett Cottage of historic Marblehead transports the traveler back in time when world travelers were courageous and few, and America emblazoned revolutionary spirit. Brackett Cottage celebrates the libertarian spirit while showcasing the owners’ pride of Marblehead. Brackett Cottage harkens back to a time when travelers returned home with wares from long global jaunts. Each piece tells a story. Visitors are embraced by the wares of a global traveler juxtaposed with items that celebrate Marblehead’s seafaring and revolutionary history.
Brackett Cottage elegantly encircles you with fine prints, antique style dinner ware, and nautical charts that represent Marblehead’s seafaring role in the American Revolution, War of 1812 and World War I. Immerse in the story of Marblehead, as it serves as the birthplace to the U.S. Navy, while admiring famous ships, tapestries, tables and lamps from around the world.
This New England colonial, built in 1810, features seafaring pieces that reflect the town's character. Each one has been hand-selected to tell the story of this home and one of the most distinct towns in Boston’s North Shore, Marblehead.
Brackett Cottage was built by a shipwright for a shipwright – everything about this home is unique. No two rooms have the same shape or height; every room has a colonial era fireplace and a tilt earned through the centuries. Built-ins abound, and the staircase with brass rail feels more appropriate in a ship than a home.
If you want an elegantly appointed, unique accommodation, Brackett Cottage is the place for you. Guest note: as is typical with many colonial era homes, ceilings and doorways are a little lower than today’s standards. Tall people may need to duck through doorways. Stairways are narrow, and floors slope.
At Brackett Cottage, each room provides a cozy place for you to relax and reflect.
In the Living Room, it’s easy to imagine family, friends, and neighbors gathered around the fireplace on the couch or the swivel chairs, sharing news and stories. The fireplace with electric insert and cozy lighting provides the perfect ambience for parlor games and conversations.
The Dining Room welcomes guests to host elegant and intimate dinner parties, or to read by the fireplace. The dining table accommodates 4-6 with dinnerware and glassware displayed in the built-in sideboard. If the natural wood of this room could talk, the stories it would tell!
The Kitchen comprises full-sized appliances and all the furnishings to cook any family meal from a simple continental breakfast to a full dinner. As you exit the Kitchen you head out to the brick pathway that leads to either the stairway to Washington Street, or to the gorgeous private garden where guests enjoy al fresco dining.
Now it’s time to grab the brass handrail and climb the ship-like stairs to the second floor where the bedrooms and bathroom await.
In the Master Bedroom, feel like royalty among the French Provincial décor. A king-sized bed smothered with silk bedding and pillows is adorned with classic side tables and crystal lamps. A silk slipper chair beside the fireplace provides another comfortable reading nook. Above the fireplace hangs a nod to modern times; guests can enjoy their favorite streaming services on the 50” smart flat-screen TV, courtesy of high speed internet.
In the Guest Bedroom, the shipwright’s hand is evident. The room feels like a colonial-era ship’s cabin with a built-in trundle bed, quirky closets, and a classic bureau. As is a common theme in this Marblehead home, there is another fireside reading nook.
The smallest bedroom, is outfitted as a den with a trundle day bed lined with large comfy pillows. While sleeping for 2 is possible, the room is set-up for snuggling in front of another 50” smart flat-screen TV – watch your favorite shows or play your favorite games. About Marblehead
Founded in 1629, Marblehead was a crucial fishing port during the American Revolution; much of its history can be discovered by navigating through the colorful, narrow streets of Old Town. Like an open-air museum, Marblehead flaunts its history not only in its well-preserved 18th-century houses and architecture, national historic landmarks and local shops are sprinkled throughout the town.
After meandering amongst the quaint Colonial houses, take a tour through Marblehead Neck, which leads to the lighthouse. Marvel at the breathtaking views of Marblehead Harbor, birthplace of the US Navy, & a major sailing capital.
Marblehead’s most popular beach, Devereux, has plenty of picnic tables, playgrounds, and on-site restrooms. Gas House Beach is on Little Harbor. This cottage was perfect for our annual girl trip to Marblehead. The location was perfect for exploring old Marblehead's historic places, dining and shopping- all within walking distance. The cottage itself is very well appointed with everything one would need from cooking to relaxing. The outdoor courtyard was great for winding down after a day of exploring with a glass of wine and a good book. The beds are very comfortable. I am hard pressed to find anything negative about the Cottage.

Great week again thank you. We have stayed here before in Brackett cottage. The location is superb, a 2 minute walk to the local supermarket, right in the middle of the village and we loved the swims off the dock in the mornings.

Communication was great but the property was not clean, as we found mouse poop in the bedding, some towels were dirty, and generally it wasn't clean. Additionally, the property has potential but was very tired. One of the beds was super noisy (creaking springs) with a sagging mattress, the kitchen sink didn't work properly as a piece was broken and many lights didn't work. Marblehead itself was lovely but I would not recommend this place. In fairness, we did complain about things when we arrived and the agency sent somebody to fix some of the issues but for example they didn't change the bedding impacted by the mouse poop which is totally unaceptable.
We were ultimately really dissapointed and would suggest you look elsewhere if you want to stay in Marblehead.

Great spot close to shopping and places to eat. Parking was a bit tough but I chose not to pay and opted for on street parking. Had to go down to basement because of a breaker. It was very cramped down there but I managed with the instructions. Nice outdoor space. Overall good place to stay.

Due to a lengthy remodel, we needed a place to host friends visiting from the UK. This property was well outfitted and perfectly met our needs. It allowed us to show our friends the beauty of the North Shore. Walking through the old town and Fort Sewell in the Spring sun was wonderful after all the rain!!

Our family of four really enjoyed our stay at Brackett Cottage. The home is conveniently located in the historic area of Marblehead and easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, historical places of interest and the beach.

This cottage was adorable! It literally felt like living in a doll house! This house was built in 1810 and had all the charms of a historic home! If you love to step into the past and enjoy the era then this type of house is for you! To me there is just something special about that! The house had all the things you need! It was close to a sweet little village of shops and eateries! It's a quiet and peaceful neighborhood.. we could take walks at night and feel completely comfortable! It is close enough to Boston and Salem and yet far enough away to have peace and quiet! We loved this little home!

The home was clean and met our expectations. There was plenty of room for myself and my adult daughter. The homes furnishings were colonial style with modern touches. We were visiting Salem for her birthday and decided to stay in Marble Head. It was an easy drive to Salem. Marble Head offered many wonderful restaurants as well. Street parking is at a minimum and I purchased a parking spot in a lot a few blocks away which is where we parked all of the time. It was fine except for unloading and loading our luggage which on the check in day was a problem due to rain. Otherwise unless you have limited mobility or can’t navigate steps this home is a great place to stay. I only gave it 4 stars because of the parking.

It was a great place to stay. Easy trip to everywhere Street parking is really not an option in front of the property.

Perfect accommodations for our family's first visit to historic Marblehead. The house is compact but comfortable; staying here fosters the imagination. We're grateful for the nice bathroom when the original inhabitants had outdoor facilities. Grateful for the modern conveniences of microwave, dishwasher and laundry (which work great) in the tiny kitchen. Everything is clean. The living room is comfortable, and our entire family has been spending hours at the end of our busy days curled up on the couches or in the chairs with a book (or smart phone!) We eat as many meals as possible out on the private patio. It's a short walk to a fully-appointed grocery (Crosby's Market) and many historic, lovely neighborhood sites. The stack of local history books is much appreciated as we plan our days as are the tips for dining, site-seeing and travel in the check-in email. Wifi works better than at home, lol. Parking is a challenge, but you can do a ton here without a car thanks to public transportation and walkable places of interest. Very pleased with our stay here. Thank you for having us!

Historic Marblehead is beyond what words can describe. My family and I enjoyed seeing firsthand what some of the aspects of the 1700s/1800s had to offer.
6.0
The cottage is perfectly located in the Marblehead Historic District, walk to everything. 1830's house gives a glimpse of what life was like then. Really interesting house.
My son said it best: "This is a worn out museum."
LOTS of little issues the HoProperty Manager neglects to fix. TV in tiny BR not set up and couldn't be watched, floor lamp broken and didn't work, dryer is broken-can't set the temperature, Internet security issues, cosmetics/nail clipper/tweezers left from prior renters, frayed carpet, dirty pans w/hair stuck to the grease, no ice cubes & broken trays (I bought 4), fabric under couch coming loose,Welcome Package was two small bottles of water and a $4 bottle of wine, etc... I wish I could upload the pictures.
Except the backyard no place to comfortably hang out. The LR furniture is worn out, DR table if opened is too large for the room, one side of the table is slanted at such an angle that your plate would end up in your lap.
The main bedroom has a king or queen bed. The second bedroom has a trundle bed and you could fit two people in the room. The third (tiny, tiny, tiny) bedroom also has a trundle bed. If you were really desperate you could have two people in the room if they don't mind stepping over each other to get in/out of bed.
The "Property Manager" has good people working for her. Vicki, Eli, Maria and Paulo were great. That is why I gave 5 stars for Property Manager Communication.
If it wasn't run down we would stay there again.

Good communication with management company. The house is steps away from everything.
To Note:
The coffee machine is a Keurig.
Parking is challenging.

Loved our Marblehead vacation. This VRBO was smack dab in the middle of “old town” and was an easy walk anywhere. Great little destination spot, would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Neighbors are also a super big plus!

We really enjoyed Brackett House. Being from the westcoast, we enjoyed the emersion in a "New England experience" offered by this historic home. The house is smaller than it looks online, but he 6 foot tall members of our family managed to avoid banging their heads on the low ceiling beams.
Just a couple of things were annoying
the shower door fell off of the tracks, so we could not fully close it. We also ran out of toilet paper, and the washer not work. However, the overall stay was truly wonderful.

My daughter and friends wanted the Salem experience after reading about it in school. I love that we stayed in the heart of Marblehead. It was great to have two very different experiences! Spookiness and farm!

i stayed for a couple days with friends and it was so fun! the location of the house was nice and secluded, and the house itself looked like a dollhouse! it was perfect for a quick getaway!! i’d consider staying again, too, as it was close to local shops and restaurants.

My husband, mom and I stayed for 3 nights in January. The house was very accurately described - it is a lovely historic home with all the modern amenities. In a great location in Marblehead, walkable to lots of shops, restaurants and the waterfront. The property manager was great at communication. Parking in the historic district can be tricky, so we utilized the parking available at the church which is just a few minute walk from the house and saved us hassle. The beds were very comfy and there is plenty of space to enjoy reading or eating in the evening for a few people. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

We love Marblehead and have stayed at several places over the years, and this adorable little cottage was a perfect location for us. Close to Fort Beach, Crocker Park and all the great restaurants and shops in the Historic District. Perfect size for the 3 of us. 1 master bedroom and 2 singles. Used the 3rd bedroom for TV watching. Loved the period furniture and decor. Small kitchen, but well stocked. Dining room table, but we ate every meal in the adorable garden. Our new place to stay.

My wife Lucy and I throughly enjoyed our stay at Brackett Cottage, it was as if we stepped back in time, albeit with modern amenities. Everything was very clean with period correct furniture and cute little outdoor sitting area. Conveniently located inside the historic district.

We had a wonderful week thank you. The location is just perfect, and there was plenty of room for us. We made good use of the garden to the rear, and plenty of walks just 100 yards or so to Mogfords in the morning for a coffee and croissant!

Perfect location and lovely accommodations
We stayed at this cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was like stepping back in time. We normally stay in hotels but this was such a great place to stay. Walking distance to so many shops and restaurants. Would definitely stay again. The management team were so good to deal with.

Comfortable and clean
Brackett Cottage is a gem. It is spacious and clean with all the necessary amenities in the kitchen and throughout. Don't be fooled by the antique furniture downstairs. It's very very comfortable! The beds are great too. The location is perfect for easy walking to stores and cafes. Do not worry too much about parking. We were able to find a spot just down the street. Communication with property host was quick and helpful. I highly recommend.

Can’t beat the location and how accommodating they were
First off, the location is amazing! Right in historic Marblehead and walkable to awesome shops and restaurants and to the water! This is the area you want to be in! Also, they were very accommodating. When we requested an early check in, permission to have a few guests for cocktails and then a late check out, they couldn’t have been more amazing and accommodating!
The house is so cool! Really quaint. You feel like you’ve gone back in time. Those are all the pros. The cons are few, but definitely worth mentioning.
Although they show a picture of a top/bottom washer/dryer and label the photo “laundry with a view“, the washer isn’t functional. When I went back to the house description, I saw that although they post that picture, which is very misleading, they list only a dryer in the amenities. It was definitely inconvenient that we had to take time out of our vacation to go to a laundromat. Another thing worth mentioning is that there are no drawers in the master bedroom and maybe one or two (if that) in the other two bedrooms. There were closets with some hangers so we had to live out of suitcases. Lastly, you’ll need sleep masks. The shades do nothing to block out morning sun.
All that said, I’d stay there again in a minute. Great price and location and my family had a wonderful time. .

Great and quirky space in the heart of Marblehead
Brackett Cottage had everything our family needed for a comfortable stay in Marblehead. When one thing was missing, the managers dropped it off within an hour of an email, so appreciated! The location was perfect for walking to numerous spots around town and to our kid's day camp. There are a ton of collections inside, cups, plates, art, etc, with lots of local history represented, very fun and just be aware if you have younger kids with curious hands...as lots of fragile items. The patio outside was perfection, especially for sipping coffee and eating a treat from Maria's, The Muffin Shop or Haley's. Thanks for the great stay.

Quaint and charming
The cottage is in a beautiful location and is close to Salem and not too far from Boston. The decor of the cottage, the low ceilings, and creaky uneven floors add to the charm. We had just a couple of glitches. The parking pass we had paid for wasn’t left for us so we had to drive around late at night looking for parking and walking back about a quarter mile the first night. Also, it was vey hot when we arrived and when I switched on the AC it blew a fuse and half of the house had no power. We had no AC and no lights that first night. Fortunately the property manager got back to us in the morning and we had to go in the basement to reset the breaker- not something anyone in my family was willing to do at 2am the night before! Overall we had a great time staying here. You can stay in a regular hotel anytime, but this cottage from 1810 is a unique experience you can’t pass up!

Beautiful Classic Property in the Center Of Marblehead
We were very happy with our stay at this house and found the check-in process to be very simple. and straightforward using an automated door code. The entire house was very clean and comfortable. We appreciated the attention to detail in the design. One person in our group is 6'2" and found the height of the ceilings and entryways to be a bit small. Not surprising considering the history of the home, just something to note. We were easily able to walk around Marblehead and were only a short drive to Salem. Street parking was hit or miss. We were always able to find a spot somewhere, but ended up being a 7 minute walk away one night.

Last minute booking at Marblehead rental
We enjoyed our stay at the rental in Marblehead. We had to make last minute arrangements after we were shocked that a property we had booked back in February through VRBO had apparently been double booked for the same dates. Thanks to Liann we only had one more day that we still had to cover to find lodging for. Things were neat and clean and comfortable. Thanks

Perfect
This historic house in the middle of one of the most beautiful towns on the New England coast has everything: charm, comfort, and location by foot or car to everything Marblehead has to offer. Three cozy well appointed (with beautiful linens) bedrooms, modern kitchen, elegant sitting room and a charming dining room. A thermostat (not locked as in some rentals) allows you to be as warm or as cool as you wish. I was there in cold weather and didn’t use the lovely private garden hidden behind the house but in summer it would be perfect right outside the kitchen for Al fresco dining . The iTrip management agent was very efficient and there to answer any questions.
