Perfect Stay, Epic View
This is a great way to enjoy your vacation. Panoramic views. Plenty of space for the family. A warm welcome from the groundskeeper, Santiago. Nice pool. Plenty of room to find a nook and spread your wings.

Unbelievably uncomfortable, Misrepresented, and sooo many bugs
My husband and I are in our early 30s, very active and travel to Central America every year. We have been to Montezuma 4 times and stayed at multiple places and this was by far the worst, and also the most expensive. We thought we would splurge and up our game from our normal backpacker hotels/cheaper VRBOs. Unfortunately, the owner does not represent the property well in their descriptions and we were misled to expect something far different. To start, the cabin is more like a shack, and you can see light coming through large cracks between planks when you look back on it at night. This does nothing to keep out bugs, there is a mosquito net over the bed but we had ants and praying mantises and other bugs in the bed every morning. Not to mention tons of bug bites! The bed is about 2ft from fridge and stove top, if you leave your garbage inside, bugs come in, if you put it outside the racoons get it. Maid service was NOT included as they say it is. They changed our sheets once during our week stay, only after we went up to the main house and requested it. Same with garbage. The bathroom, adjacent to kitchen and bed area is only separated by a 3/4 wall, so no privacy there. This place is very small. The shower is outside and had no light, so we had to use headlamps to watch for snakes when entering the shower at night. The main house which is often represented in the photos was occupied by the owner who was living by himself at the time. We were not invited to use the pool and honestly, he had a creepy vibe.
We almost left early multiple times, but we are the kind of people who like to give things the benefit of the doubt and tough it out. This is one of few times I regret that, by the time we left we were miserable and covered with bug bites. I had my laptop with me and a colony of ants came in and literally colonized the inside of my computer, but there was nothing we could do to keep them out of the shack. I could seriously go on and on about the downfalls of this place.
To end on a positive note though, the view is amazing, just don't be afraid of sharing your space with spiders the size of your hand, sharing your bed with ants and your trash with, well everything. For what it actually is, $50 would be a much more reasonable price. Stay in town and enjoy the vibe of Montezuma.
Also, a car or atv rental is absolutely required.
I will NEVER go back, and we are really pretty chill about things. This place was unbelievably uncomfortable.

Amazing views and property. Way better than the photos
Great property with incredible views located ~15 minutes drive from the town of Montezuma. Nice pool and lots of space to enjoy the view of the ocean and listen for the howler monkeys. Clean and very open living space with lots of air flow and although there is no AC, there was enough open air flow to get a good sleep on those hot nights. A vehicle is a must to get in and out of town, to restaurants and attractions.

Rustic tiny cabin on dramatic cliff
I stayed in the Mariposa cabin with my boys aged 10 & 12. It was cozy but worked fine. The cabin would be better as a romantic private place for a couple. It was very simple but had everything you need. You will need to bring all food essentials: ie salt pepper sugar. The drive up from Montezuma is extremely steep and a little scary. We did not have a car but Santiago, the caretaker, helped us find a nice taxi driver who was willing to drive us back and forth. Santiago was very helpful. He speaks only Spanish but he called Peter the owner when we had and difficulty with translation. Peter was also very helpfull. Although the location was Slightly inconvenient to get to the beach etc, I felt very safe up there at night with the windows and doors open. Montezuma town itself is a little seedy and you could not do that. My boys and I enjoyed lazy days at the swimming pool. We listened to howler monkeys below us on the cliffs and enjoyed stalking huge iguanas on the grounds. There were white faced capuchin monkeys in the trees around us and great birding in the property and surrounding area.
I highly recommend the area. As a die-hard beach lover, It’s hard to explain why the waterfalls are so incredibly beautiful. There are many streams in the area and they drop down cliffs into giant swimming pools. You go to the Falls not just because it is beautiful but also an amazing place to swim! This is actually the true splendor of the area. My only complaint would be the bed. I am very picky about my beds and to be fair, from experience at other places, it was about average. I think that bringing in large items like high quality mattresses is very expensive in this remote area.... but if it was possible to replace it would be well worth it!

Beautiful view! Remote location!
This was worth every penny!! The pool was great. House was great. Santiago the caretaker of the house was awesome! Only issue we had was that our neighbors liked to walk around naked.... maybe a privacy question on the booking sheet so that people that prefer the nude have a more private house... other than hay the house was perfect!!!

A perfect family weekend
We stayed at the Art House together with dear friends (including 4 children) for the weekend. The description here only begins to capture the beauty of this home. Original artwork throughout, extraordinary salvaged antique architectural details - from the wood floors to unique stained glass windows. Mosaic tile floors with wonderful creativity and playfulness. Perfect pool, gorgeous views, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, roof-top patio where our boys happily slept under the stars instead of in their room. Don't hesitate to book this gem. We look forward to returning!

Amazing view, Accomodation our of a magazine!
We stayed in the Colibri cabin for 3 nights. The view was amazing and the host (Peter) was very welcoming and accomodating. We enjoyed the views and the outdoor shower. The house itself is very rustic and you should know that before coming. The colibri house is about 100 meters from the main house (which is where the pool is located). The geco cabin was under construction while we were there which prevented us from using the pool due to the construction that was going on around it. The only real issue we found was the heat. There is no A/C in the colibri cabin and we did not find that the unit had very good air flow even though it is open concept with a lot of windows. Peter was great and gave us an additional fan however without A/C we found that the bedding and pillows were damp. The pillows were not the greatest. The kitchen was extremely well stocked with everything you need to make your own meals and Peter brought us down a charcoal BBQ to use which was fantastic. This really is a unique spot and perfect if you don't mind a little heat when you sleep. You will need a car as the cabin is at the top of a cliff and requires some hilly driving to get to. Make sure you get groceries before you come as local groceries are more expensive.

Perfect Cabin
I rarely write reviews, but I stayed in the Colibri cabin last year and have been meaning to post one ever since. Firstly, I would like to echo every other review posted online about this place, it is amazing. The location and view is the stunning and every photo I've seen cannot do it justice, you really need to experience it for yourself. Our hosts Peter and Rocia were fantastic, our baggage was lost by the airline and they went above and beyond our expectations and even directed the driver to our location to ensure we got it back in one piece. We only stayed for a few nights as we were doing a road trip around the country, but we could have easily stayed for a week or two, I can thoroughly recommend staying at Montezuma Heights for as long as possible!

Absolutely amazing!!
I'm so sorry it has taken me 2 years to write this review. We were there in December of 2013, and it was perfect! The house was exactly as described. Peter and his family were wonderful hosts, I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quite secluded locations set away from the inner city of Montezuma. We did not rent a car and I am thankful we didn't, the roads are very steep. we rent an ATV and it was a lot of fun.

Amazing Tree House Getaway
This was my second trip to stay in the Colibri cabin, which is a fantastic treehouse retreat from my normal busy, suburban life back home. After visiting in 2014, I decided I had to go return for a second year. Between the time to relax, the proximity of town making your stay more secluded, and the million dollar view, you are sure to have a relaxing time. Since last year, Peter has made great improvements in the cabins. As far as Colibri, there is a brand new refrigerator with a lot of space and new art. He showed me the new cabin (Geco) and also he made an outdoor tub for Mariposa. I was impressed. While I was there in 2014, he was working on finishing the pool, which I used in 2015. The pool and view is amazing! Peter, Rocio, and Natalie are very accommodating and fantastic hosts, as usual. I was glad for the opportunity to return spend time in the cabin as well as with the Kahl family. They are always up for great conversation and laughs.
You should stay in Colibri (or Peter’s other cabins) if you are looking for a place that is less commercial, more remote, and unique!

An experience that can't be captured in photos!
I spent the early two weeks of January in the Colibri cabin and I have no words to express how amazing the view is from the cabin. I stumbled upon this cabin searching online; I’m not the type of person to stay in resort-style accommodations. I would describe the cabins as rustic and quaint. The views and experience are much more than can be captured in photographs. These are cabins Peter built by hand. Colibri had a very cool loft which overlooks the property on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other side. If you look down, you see Playa Los Cedros (I believe?), which is a very nice beach to go to while on your stay. I spent a lot of time in the hammock or deck chair reading books and enjoying the beautiful weather. At night a few geckos would sneak in and hang out on the ceiling! Also, from what I hear, this is one of the few places in Costa Rica with hot water for your shower!
Each day, Peter will offer to drive you and other cabin guests down to Montezuma, which is about a 5-10 minute drive. From there, I took a taxi up at night (go talk to Roger at Cabo Blanco Travelers between Mamatea and Chicos, since taxis seem to disappear after 6pm in Montezuma). A car isn’t necessary, as a taxi is only $10 up the hill. A few days, I walked into town, which takes about a half an hour (you see a lot of nature and get a little workout!). I recommend walking down before 8am or after 4pm because of the heat.
Peter and Rocio are very helpful and always are there to help and see if you need anything and always a few steps away if you needed something. Their daughter, Natalie, will help you with your poor Spanish speaking skills and tell you funny stories. They have two dogs, Luna and Stancha(?), which are very friendly and may come to visit. Peter is very knowledgeable and will answer any questions you have about the area and any places you’d like to travel or tour. He can help point you in the right direction and tell you which ones might be better than other tours. I recommend taking a day or two to rent an ATV and travel to the Cabuya Isla Cementario at low tide, Cabo Blanco Reserve, and then visiting Mal Pais and Santa Teresa.
This place is a hidden gem and I can’t wait to go back. I wish I would have stayed longer considering the -80 degree difference in the weather I had to come back to! I feel as if I came for a vacation and left with a new family, thanks to the hospitality of Peter, Rocio, Natalie, and the puppies.

Beautiful views from a charming cabin.
What a true Gem! This beautiful little cabin had the most gorgeous views in Costa Rica. Nothing beats waking up, making your own breakfast, and stepping out on to the balcony to watch the wales and take in the morning sun. Everything is perfect about this spot, from the hand built cabin, to the outdoor shower and amazing tile work, it's just wonderful.
Wildlife was right in our back yard too! Iguanas, monkeys, and all kinds of birds. We did have a few large bug encounters, but hey, it's Costa Rica.
It's about a 30 minute walk to town with some pretty serious hills, but we really enjoyed these daily walks. It helped to keep us in shape and you really get to see a lot of wildlife along the way. If you don't want to walk, Peter offers a ride to town every day and their are taxis in town for the ride back if needed.
This place is really worth it, a true GEM!

Small Cabin, Big View :)
We stayed in colibri cabin for 4 weeks. The cabin is quaint and both patios offer breathtaking views, be it of the ocean and shoreline during the day or the stars at night. Very representative of the beauty of Costa Rica.
Peter and Rocio were friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and Peter and Rocio were happy to loan us anything we lacked, be it a bit of baking soda or a rolling pin. They were very helpful in recommending activities and restaurants. Peter regularly offered rides down to Montezuma or to Cobano, where there is a weekly market (feria) selling fresh fruits and vegetables at very affordable prices.
The walk down to Montezuma is about 30 mins and quite steep in places but is nice exercise and a small adventure in itself. Las Manchas beach, which is visible from the patio, is small, quiet, nice for swimming and a great reward for those that make the hike down. The series of 3 waterfalls are a bit closer and we walked to them several times.

true relaxation
We stayed here for a week in February and it was fantastic! Mariposa is the perfect place to unwind if you need a break from fast paced work life. Although it is probably preferable to have a car to stay here as it is off the beaten path, we didnt have one and it gave us the excuse to stay home and read and cook and look at the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Peter and Rocio were very accommodating and friendly and were always available but non-intrusive. The cabin is clean, well organized, romantic , artistic, warm and welcoming. The waterfalls a short drive away are wonderful and refreshing. Peter was great at offering us daily rides to town if we needed anything but we were so content to stay here in this lovely little house that we rarely ventured away! If you need to relax , look no further!

Romantic Get-Away
What a stunning place to stay. Right on a cliff overlooking the Pacific. The view is amazing. Pictures do not do it justice. The cabin was beautiful and clean. The owner Peter and his family very helpful and friendly.
It's private and great for couples looking for a romantic spot. A little out of Montezuma so you have your privacy but close enough to walk to the beach and restaurants. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Loved our stay here!!
What a special place, we couldn't get over how amazing the cabina 'mariposa' was!
The woodwork and tile work details will amaze you. We loved the bi-folding doors and windows that allowed us to sleep with our ears to the sound of the crashing waves 300 ft. below. Opening our eyes in the morning to a spectacular sunrise- making french press coffee & cooking dinners on the 3 burner stove & making our own fresh blended cocktails at sunset all added to the ease and experience of Montezuma for us. An outdoor shower and a beautiful outdoor space to sit & listen to the howler monkeys or star gaze! Pinch me!!
Thank you to Peter, Rocio and little Natalie for your graciousness & obvious love for your space! We loved the ideas for our day trips- can't wait to go back!

A little paridise
We absolutely loved this place. It is pretty important to have a 4X4 for gettting around as it is up quite a steep hill. If you were to bike around there, you'd have to be in pretty good shape. The kitchen was wonderful to have, as it is a drive into town. We picked up groceries at the Super Maya on the way in from Cobano to the cabin. We enjoyed breakfast every morning, in the comforts of our own home, surrounded by the wildlife. The property itself has a lot of attention to detail, and is very well maintained. There is a wonderful Costa Rican lady two doors down that takes care of the grounds and does daily housekeeping. She is super friendly and does a fantastic job. The owners were extremely helpful, we wished we could have met them.
I would recommend this place to anyone who doesn't mind a pretty crazy drive to get there, that likes privacy with a fantastic view. The loft bedroom has a view of the stars and ocean. It is truly spectacular. We also loved the outdoor shower.
We enjoyed the restaurant Cocolores in Montezuma. We also made a trip to the national park and did the four hour round trip hike to the beach. It is quite hilly but we saw lots of birds and monkeys on our walk. The waterfall in Montezuma was beautiful. We hope to make another trip here in the future.
