About this cottage rental
This is an immaculate, comfortable cottage. By 'comfortable' I mean well-appointed, attractive, plush furnishings but not priceless fragile family heirlooms. It does possess art, rugs and furniture by recognized Maine artists, and authentic nautical motifs throughout - some salvaged from the training ship of Maine Maritime Academy. Coastal but not cluttered.
Everything is new or recently remodeled (2009)- Kitchen, Baths, Bedrooms, Hardwood floors, etc. Freshly landscaped, wooded boundaries, southern exposure, and view corridors to the sea provide the greenery, sunshine and warmth every vacation demands!
Property is 500 yards from nearby Witherle Woods Wilderness Preserve- 168 acres overlooking 100' ocean bluff providing unobstructed views of Penobscot Bay: Get lost for 1-3 hours, discover abundance of Osprey, Eagle, Raccoon, and Deer. In fact, 38 bird species call this home!
Three decks -and new Weber grill -provide ample opportunity and space to relax, ruminate and rusticate aka “grillin, chillin, and millin” 3.5 baths ensures hygiene never waits. Another full bath if you elect to include Tiny House. (See below)
Minutes to the fine restaurants of downtown or “Back-shore” for sunset swimming and bonfires! Ideal for large family retreat or two-family getaway!
And when/ if you tire of the slow, bucolic setting that is Castine, consider our cottage as base camp to other more hectic coastal enclaves such as Camden, Bar Harbor or the outer islands!
Six Bedrooms total- if you opt for accessory bedroom in Tiny House.
Five Queens, two twins in Big House (BH).
One Queen futon and new conv couch in ‘optional’ adjacent Tiny House (TH). Sleeps 16.
Please be advised it is two structures - it includes the Big House and a new Tiny House separated by 3’ from BH. (Optional TH: Extra fee $149/ night applies).
The brand new Carriage House (CH) is also available separately and sleeps 6 in two bedrooms plus conv couch. In other words, you will be sharing the property but not accommodations. The only thing they share is the driveway. Assigned parking, separate laundry and outside sitting areas as well as mature landscape helps keep things private and orderly. If you rent one you can expect to find others enjoying the other. They were designed and sited to maximize privacy and optimize view corridors.

Castine was truly a great discovery. An adorable town with tons of history in a pristine setting. Very walkable area. We wound up staying in the carriage house on the property. The host was very friendly and easy to talk to. This is probably ideal for large parties that want to rent the entire compound since there is lots of varied space. Kitchen was well stocked with any appliance or tool we needed. Living space is on second floor so need to be able to handle stair and both bedrooms adjoin the main bathroom (Jack and Jill) thus probably better suited for close families than random acquaintances.

A quiet house in a quiet town. Everything as described. We loved it!

Our stay was great. House was clean and spacious. Location was perfect, but plan a good 30 - 45 minute drive to anywhere else. Owner was responsive to our inquiries during our stay and even ordered a fresh pie for us ( I have to say the Apple pie from the bakery was not good. Blueberry would have been preferred). Everything else was wonderful and would definitely visit again!

What a great house. EVERYTHING was supplied! Linens, towels, toilet paper, dinnerware, condiments, etc.
Castine is a great town within easy walking distance from this house. Very historic with plenty to do.
Although Ted was not in the country while we were there, he communicated with us via text. Plenty of parking, too.
Castine Golf Club (1897) is a very tough nine hole course with fabulous greens.
Also, don’t miss driving to Nervous Nelly’s…you will be surprised but not disappointed.

What a great two weeks! We had 17 people at one point and there was room for everyone. Some had to work while there, and the three separate cottages made that a breeze. Three full kitchens made cooking for a crew simple. Ted went out of his way to make sure we all had all we needed and then some! Castine is a precious town and we had a wonderful
time exploring from a fabulous base!

Arrived to overflowing garbage on floor in basement from prior renters, bikes and chairs strewn around tiny back yard, house keys were missing when we arrived and no backup key was available on the first night while we went out and had to leave home unlocked with our belongings inside. Neither TV in the home worked. Small downstairs bedroom TV was fixed on 3rd day but TV in main family room was never fixed prior to end of our stay so we couldn’t share a large family movie night together. There was no air conditioning in the house even though listing advertised AC. We had family members with seasonal allergies so we specifically chose a house that supposedly had AC. Owner didn’t care that he falsely advertised the AC and joked that we didn’t need it most of the year. Property also had two rentals sharing same yard. We were told there was a second rental on the lot, but not that they were so close or that some areas in our home were to be used as common areas for the smaller house which was literally 5 feet from main home. Owner also told other tenant to share our basement game room and laundry facility without our awareness. Complete surprise to us that other renter had access to the downstairs of the house we rented. Didn’t want to be sharing our rental with another tenant during a COVID pandemic so completely mislead here. Fortunately other tenant also not happy & moved out after her first night of rental and cancelled her reservation. Great news for us not having to worry about another person wandering around our basement while our kids were downstairs playing without masks. Unfortunately, the owner proceeded to then charge us for that additional studio rental after he lost that rental income. He was able to withhold a rebate that was due to us even though we never used that additional studio during our entire stay. I have rented VRBO properties problem-free for eight years now and this is by far the worst managed property we have ever stayed at. Out of state owner provided some welcome gifts and a travel guide but that didn’t make up for not having the advertised AC in the house or a working TV in the main family room. Throw in the problems with owner trying to charge us for a building we didn’t rent. and this rental was a complete failure other than the time we spent taking in all the sights in the surrounding areas of Maine. Great launching point for day trips around Maine, great area, horrible experience with owner.

Loved using this rental for our family. We brought all our kids (9 ranging from 5-20), so 11 total. We enjoyed all of the common spaces inside and out. The owner gave us fantastic suggestions for food and what to do. Even with many things closed or running limited hours due to covid, we loved Castine. We became well known at MarKel’s bakery, Castine Variety for ice cream cones, and snacks at T & C. Everything was close enough to take walks from the house into town. We also spent a couple days hiking in Acadia, but found that Ted’s suggestion of walking in the Witherle Woods was just as spectacular. We went to the beach right at Wadsworth Cove, and enjoyed the sea creatures at low tide. We stayed three weeks and never ran out of things to do! A delightful house and fantastic host.

Castine, Maine has it all!
Many special touches make this house rental desireable as our family of four couples that included grandparents and kids discovered. Ted's attention to hospitality (fresh flowers in vases, fruit and chocolate treats awaiting with a welcome note) VERY humorous summary of what to do in the area - all enhanced our stay. Also the location was supreme in terms of bike riding and walking to places like the town center (for morning coffee), sea kayaking, a small museum, a lighthouse, and a beach suited our family's love of the outdoors and being active.

Terrific hospitality, quirky, great family reunion home.
Perfect place for our family reunion in a quiet and beautiful coastal town.

If you are looking for a great, fun vacation house in Castine this is it. The home is welcoming and comfortable, it almost felt like we had stayed at the house many times before, even though it was our first time.
The house is spacious and has three floors that gives everyone room and offers a space a great space to gather on the second floor due to the open kitchen, dining area and deck. This is a perfect Maine vacation house with plenty of room for enjoying life. There are a couple of decks that have a great view of the water, an awesome front porch and it has a yard that is ready for crochet or bocce ball – the house has a croquet set and I think badminton, we borrowed a bocce ball set from some local friends.
The house is setup for a great relaxing week in Maine – it has a good kitchen and grill on the deck – really the perfect setup for cocktailing, grilling and enjoying great fresh food with friends and family. Its a short walk to anywhere in town, to Dyce Head or the Wirtherle Woods. The best days were spent just walking to Markel’s for some coffee and a quick bite, then doing a little local area stuff and getting back to this house in the afternoon to enjoy some great local beer and fresh seafood, and beating family in yard games. If you are looking for a house geared towards spending time enjoying Maine, the company of friends/family and having fun, this is it. I would also recommend checking out the night kayaking trip as the bay has some bioluminescent dinoflagellates residents.

Our reunion of friends (all in our 60's and 70's) just spent a wonderful week at this great property in Castine. It had a small bar on the first floor (which we didn't use), a living and dining and kitchen area on the second floor, and a master suite on the third, plus a little getaway cottage in the yard. We enjoyed the view from the second floor balcony and found lots of extras in the pantry plus some surprises from the owner. Perhaps not the best house for those with ability issues because of the stairs, but we managed and had a very enjoyable visit. The town has a lot of options for food and a little shopping, along with galleries and two museums. The walks through town and through the Woods and to the lighthouse were great, and the people we met were friendly. The Maine Maritime Academy adds a bit of character to your trips downtown, with drills going on from time to time, and we enjoyed seeing all of the students. And one more thing - the sheets, blankets, and towels were top notch! Thank you, Cap'n Ted!

family trip
This house was perfect for a family of 12. The added touches from the owner to welcome us was very thoughtful and the house was well stocked with items often purchased and thrown out within a week of staying at a rental (i.e. spices, sealed boxes of food left from previous vacationer, etc.) A great approach to reduce, reuse, and recycle! Also, if you have ever stayed in other rentals in ME fans can be an issue. This place has plenty!

Wonderful!!
So happy to see Camp Bagaduece back here on HomeAway. For my friends and I last august it was just that. We found the house to be completely livable, many bedrooms to choose from, mine had a private bath and lovely linens. We really loved the decks and the second floor living room kitchen area became our hub. The kitchen was perfectly appointed with everything we needed from lobster pots for our lobster feast, saute pans, coffee maker, wine opener... We lacked for nothing including fresh raspberries from the edge of the lawn for our pancakes! Yum.
Our daily walks to town each morning for coffee and something delectable from Ba's Bakery set the tone for each memorable day. We arrived back in time after a day exploring to witness an eagle in the spruce tree out in front of the house struggling with a snack. It was in the tree long enough for me to get quite a few photos from the third floor deck. Amazing.
I would definitely reccommend this property to anyone looking for something out of the cookie cutter ordinary. A wonderful mix of rustic and refined made for a fabulous getaway.

Castine Rocks -- I'll be back
Castine Rocks. You can walk everywhere, or no where. I truly enjoyed the second floor deck overlooking the bay, and entertaining with the open kitchen to the living area. It was a great opportunity to turn off the cell phone and 'relax'.
In addition to all the ambiance what I also appreciated was the no hassle aspect the rental provided from arrival to departure. As an old slogan for Holiday Inn used to say "the best surprise, is no surprise" In this case all the surprises were positive, for this is not cookie cutter property. Highly unique.
Looking forward to another visit this summer!

Bagadeuce
If you are looking for a unique, cozy spot to experience the wonders of Penobscot
Bay, this is the spot that you should make your destination. This three story retreat is privately nestled into the quintessential New England shipping village of Castine, Maine. Staying here, you will be able to walk or bike into town; but you will also be able to privately retreat back home and read a book and/or sip a cocktail of your choice while you soak up breathtaking views of one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
I had a chance to spend some time at this cottage last summer, and it was one of the highlights of my summer. It offers all that I am looking for when I vacation--coziness, beauty, opportunities for fun and good energy.

Can't wait to go back to Bagaduece Coop.....
For the past three summers we've had a wonderful time while staying at this cottage. Each visit we are welcomed by fresh flowers and a lovely, welcoming note from the owner. The cottage is spacious, clean with plenty of linens. Just a short walk from the beach and town, but secluded enough to have plenty of privacy, we couldn't ask for anything more. The ocean views are superb and the house is wonderfully decorated. Our children love the area as well and it is a very safe environment for them.
We will continue to Bagaduece Coop as it has become a family tradition for us. It is truly a gem and we are fortunate to have found her.

Wonderful Stay!
This home is light and airy, with a lovely view of the bay from the private, sunny balconies and gorgeous master bedroom.
We had an excellent stay. This location is great because it's a quiet street, but it's a short stroll to the "downtown" and waterfront -restaurants, museum, golf, tennis... even live music- lighthouse, and the Witherle Woods trailhead (which is like having access to a state park at the top of the street).
Ted is the consummate host (friendly, warm, and accommodating), and he added all the touches to make this house feel like a home, like nice bedding and comfy furniture, beautiful rugs, and original artwork.
We'll be back...

Our family cannot wait to return!
What a gem! We celebrated our annual family reunion at this beautiful and comfortable home this past summer, and we cannot wait to return and hope to make it an annual family tradition.
Very peaceful, private and serene in the cute coastal village of Castine.
Our morning walks with coffee were so wonderful and of course the evening "Happy Hour(s)" on the porch were all very special.
The house was very well appointed and EXTREMELY comfortable. We especially enjoyed sleeping with the doors to the porch open at night, listening to mother nature's orchestra.
The owner Ted was also very accommodating and helpful and a real pleasure to work with.
We cannot wait to return this again this summer!

***BEWARE***Vacation Rental NOT as described!!!
Our family planned a wonderful getaway from the Texas heat to enjoy what we were told was the"Hidden Jewel tucked away" in Castine, Maine. Wow, were we fooled! Foot tall grass as you enter the residence, mold growing on tub (that we had to let mold cleaner sit over night, trying to help out), pet hair in the sheets,(was going to change myself after finding a spare set, however they smelled of mildew). Ice maker that leaks on the floor when you turn it on,(which problem has existed for a while seeing the ceiling area directly below on bottom floor has board nailed up to cover drenched, soaked area instead of fixing initial problem). A light in the bedroom on the second floor hanging by it's electrical source(was only fixed, because we complained). Screens off several windows, so you could not open all the windows; because the mosquitoes would welcome themselves inside the house. Not enough towels for nine guest,(owner stated, one for each bedroom)?? One roll of toilet paper for nine guest to share, tape and bed on ceiling falling down, spiders and webs in every corner and across ceilings, as well as dirt on floor, clearly not cleaned directly before we arrived. Painting not complete throughout house, chunks of flooring out, and hidden by furniture. The shower head in the small bathroom in bedroom downstairs, was not installed correctly. When turned on, water sprays outside the shower area soaking the floor. Basic household needs, as a broom, were no where located.
When concerns were brought to owners attention, the light issue for instance, he stated, "oh, that's no big deal, those are daddy long legs". Really?? Well, where we come from, those are a "hazard".
He did offer for us to leave by the next day of arrival and he would refund us our money. So, now we have to spend a day of our vacation, to try and find lodging to accommodate all nine of us, and pack up everything? He also offered to at least refund us for one of the days if we were to stay. We opted to tuff it out, rather than waste a day of exploring Maine. The owner lives an entire map away, and does not have a property manager on site. I am still awaiting my deposit to be returned,as he is now in Maine and my deposit check sits in another state. Was told that I could cancel my check,$30 fee on my end, which he did not have with him and told that our claims were exaggerated. I have pictures to back up all claims. What a con artist!
