About this house rental
This is the old Cape Cod at its loveliest and most peaceful. Although the oldest part of the house was originally a cottage built in the 1830s, this property was one of the first in Chatham to be transformed into a summer estate in the early 20th century. The architectural details are unique, the views heavenly, the outdoors inviting. There's no place like it.
The property (and this booking) includes two houses: the ten-bedroom main house and the 3 bedroom cottage.
Our houses are located on 3.2 acres, which provide sweeping ocean views and plenty of secret places to hide away with a deck chair and a book. For children there's ample terrain for tag, softball, scavenger hunts, and epic games of hide and seek.
Our home overlooks North Chatham’s Pleasant Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Although the geography is shifting quickly these days, there is a barrier beach--the outer bar--in places, that separates the bay from the ocean and shelters our beach from the ocean surf.
A lawn slopes down from the house to a staircase down to a wide sandy beach. In Massachusetts, beach is private to the low tide mark but in practice we allow people to walk on our beach.
The main house opens up onto a large flat lawn that is equally inviting for morning donuts and coffee or evening wine and cheese. In fact, entire days can slip by as one sits here contemplating the changing light and tides. A stroll down the lawn and a flight of stairs takes you to a quiet beach. To the south of the main house is a large flower garden, designed early in the 20th century, complete with a gazebo. Also overlooking the water, this garden is a perfect spot for a picnic, a nap, or a party.
Behind the house, away from the water, is a meadow and a grove of locust trees. There’s a back patio by the kitchen for grilling and outdoor eating, and plenty of cozy spots to shelter from the sea wind on breezy days.
The main house stretches along the bay, allowing for many spectacular water views and lending the house a feeling of transparency. Bright morning light pours in across the water from the east and gentle golden light filters in from the west in the evening.
The main house has 10 bedrooms. There are 5 bathrooms: 1 half bath; 1 bathroom with a shower; 1 bathroom with a tub-shower combination; 1 bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and 1 bathroom with a bathtub only. There is also an outdoor shower, and in summer, almost everyone showers outdoors because it's such a treat!
Most of the first floor is an extended living space which includes a dining room, the music room (a living room with an old piano--nice for kids, disappointing for a concert pianist, a TV, and French doors that open onto the formal garden), the sunporch (a spacious living room, with a wall of full-length windows overlooking the water), a third living room organized around a big working fireplace, a pantry, and a kitchen that opens onto a cozy breakfast patio under a chestnut tree. There is also a bedroom with its own entrance, two sweet and simple bedrooms in the original "maid's wing," and two bathrooms—one a half-bath and one with a shower.
Upstairs are bedrooms and more bedrooms: 2 bedrooms with king beds and water views; 2 bedrooms with queen beds, 1 of which has a water view; 1 bedroom with two singles; 2 bedrooms with 1 single bed each. There are three bathrooms, one of which has a bathtub only, one of which has a separate shower and tub, and one of which has a bathtub-shower combination.
The cottage is cozy, yet spacious. It has 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The living room has a working fireplace and a small TV. Two French doors open from the living room onto an outdoor sitting area with views of the water. The kitchen overlooks the ocean—I’ve never found a more inspiring spot for vegetable chopping--and opens up to an airy dining room on one side and an outdoor sitting and grilling area on the other, so whether you’re dining indoors or out, it's easy to keep an eye on the stove.
Also on the first floor is a bedroom overlooking the water with a queen bed, a bathroom with a shower, and a bedroom with a single bed, it’s own entrance, and gorgeous late-afternoon light.
Upstairs is one large bedroom with windows on three sides. You can lie in the king-sized bed and watch the sunrise over the water, while children sleep in a double bed that is nestled into an alcove. There is also a bathroom upstairs with a claw foot bathtub.
The main house is not heated (although the cottage is) so we make the property available for rental from the mid-May to mid-October.
Please note: this shoreline is very dynamic. I describe above what the beach looks like now. A big storm could either wipe away a good portion of the beach or deposit more sand thereby increasing the beach's size. We do everything we can to protect ourselves from erosion, but the reality of shore-front property these days is that the beach levels are not in our control. This would be the case with any ocean front house. So there are no guarantees that the beach will still be as currently described when the rental begins and we will not offer any money back because of shifts in the beach due to storms, erosion, or anything else.

We stayed at this stunning property with friends and extended family to celebrate my sons wedding which took place near by. The house was perfectly suited for a large group, we didn't feel as though we were on top of each other at all, we so enjoyed coffee together in the mornings over looking the beach and ocean, and the sunset from the lawn and gardens in the evening. The house is well equipt, if you think you need to bring "x" likely you don't, beds were clean and comfortable, honestly I can't think of a single complaint!
Our plan was to see the area while vacationing, honesty, we never really left the property! The beach is a slice of heaven, the gardens beg you to grab one of the many books from the house and just relax and enjoy!
Catherine is absolutely the host of the century. She answered every communication in a thorough and timely fashion and went beyond to be sure we were comfortable and prepared for our vacation. Thank you Catherine for sharing your home, it's rich history and stunning environment!
We are forever grateful for our time spent!

We had a magical week staying here and having our daughter’s wedding. The wedding party stayed for a couple nights and it was perfect for them to be together. We lucked out with the weather and it was an absolutely perfect venue, our wedding was early June and the flowers in the backyard were stunning! The beach is amazing and private. This was our first time to cape cod and we loved it! The house is huge and we also had the cottage, lots of space for everyone. Loved it!

This house was a fantastic location, within walking distance to Chatham center. Having the beach right in the back yard was so convenient and relaxing! The backyard was beautiful and was the perfect location for my mothers 70th birthday dinner and family photos overlooking the ocean. The house itself was very spacious, more than enough room for 20 family members of various ages.

This property is exactly as described. Bursting with charm from the outside to inside. The beds were very comfortable, there were plenty of common areas and the separate cottage was perfect for the younger generation of our group. Everyone was thrilled with this house and grounds and access to the beach.

This property is incredibly beautiful and was a great location for our family vacation and wedding. Catherine was very accommodating and answered all of the questions we threw her way. Great location- secluded enough that the property was very peaceful but close enough to downtown Chatham for shops and restaurants. Can’t recommend enough!

Beautiful scenery for a backyard wedding. Large enough to fit wedding for 35, small enough to feel cozy. Catherine very responsive on questions.

A perfect spot for our family to gather together, cook, eat, sit by the sea, play board games, piano, and enjoy the interesting books. Nooks and crannies for everyone's style. We had a fabulous time and will totally come back if we can!

Wedding Weekend in June
Catherine’s home was beyond amazing. After looking at various Cape wedding venues, I landed upon Catherine’s home for my wedding in June. My family and friends stayed at the house and we had the ceremony on the front lawn and had it catered with a tent. I do not recommend going out to eat because this is the best view on the Cape and there are two kitchens for cooking.
I’ve been coming to the Cape and summering here for 28+ years and this was by far the most beautiful location. Catherine’s home was quintessential Cape Cod. Close proximity to Chatham, CBI and Chatham Fish. We rented paddle boards and kayaks and spenth the days by the beach. Highly recommend Catherine’s home for a family getaway!!

Wedding Part 3
We had originally booked this property for October of 2020 for our wedding however with everything that happened in the world we had to move it. Catherine was extremely accommodating with not only moving the date but letting us hold the party there.
The property was amazing and we had a beautiful day.

Incredible memories made at the Chatham Summer house
The house and property are quintessential Cape Cod. The place is so beautiful and nothing feels out of place or time. I will never forget waking up to the sunrise and being able to see it from bed. My husband Mike and I hosted our friends and family to celebrate being together for 11 years. It was the absolute perfect space to host an event. We put a tent within the garden walls where we shared two meals with our loved ones with the most amazing view of the water. It was so nice to have a big lawn to play games and lounge around in the sun.
Catherine was an excellent host as I had many questions leading up to the weekend.
We spent a lot of time in the kitchen making food as a family and it just had the best energy. At one point we had 8 chairs pulled up to the small table. Lots of laughter. The outdoor shower was divine - excellent water pressure. I never showered indoors the whole weekend!
We are already making plans to rent again!

This place is a GEM!
I rented this house for my family and friends. It was SPECTACULAR! We had between 16 and 19 guests throughout the week. We cooked almost every night because getting a reservation is next to impossible with COVID and that many people. We also got takeout that delivered. Catherine gives you a welcome note with tons of information. The kitchen had everything we needed. The dining room table sat all of us. The beds were comfy and the house was clean. You have to love old houses and you have to respect this old house. It reminded me of my grandparents house up in New Hampshire. Some of the bathrooms were updated, some were not but that’s the beauty of the house. Actually, there are too many beautiful things about this house. The important part is we had no plumbing issues. The beach is to die for!!!! BEST PART!!! We rented paddle boards and when they delivered them they gave us instructions on how to use them. I know the landscape changes due to the tide but the sand was so soft and the water was warm. We were there the end of July. There is a little island that protects you. We paddle boarded almost every day. My husband and I paddle boarded down to the Chatham Bars Inn but never made it in to get a drink. It was a little too early for us. You can also walk there during low tide. I can’t say enough about this house. It was just wonderful! The only drawbacks were the furniture and the TVs could be updated but you’re never going to get a place for that many people ON YOUR OWN PRIVATE BEACH for that kind of money. I loved it!!!! I would rent it again in a heartbeat!!! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!

The property is great for family reunion or pretty site for a wedding. We had 24 ASR’s ranging from 6-83 and it worked for all. Great to be able to walk down to the water & go into Chatham easily. Chatham Bars Inn also very close & great place to go for a drink. Owner was good to work with, very responsive.

Incredible old cape home
We held our wedding weekend here and had friends and family stay with us. This house is quintessentially old cape cod - perfectly preserved. We particularly enjoyed the private beach, epic views and beauty of the interior. If you enjoy historic properties this one takes the cake, it was truly memorable. In the words of one of our guests - this is the most beautiful wedding I’ve ever been to. If you are looking for new construction and afraid of normal old house things like the occasional spider or moth, or want a brand new experience this is not the house for you. Incredible epic weekend. We hope to return to this gem, thank you Catherine!

A Grand Experience
Catherine was lovely to work with and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at her house. She went out of her way to help us and give us all of the information that we needed. The house has so much character and we felt swept away with its charm. I would definitely recommend!

We had our wedding at Catherine’s home in late September. It was gorgeous! Everything worked out as well as we had hoped. We planned the wedding from Austin, Texas and Catherine made it as easy as possible for us. She was very communicative, understanding, and helpful, putting us in touch with vendors that have worked at the property before and helping us imagine the layout for the ceremony and reception based on what others had done. The vendors knew exactly what to do on the property, and all were professional, timely, and respectful. Since most of our family was coming from out of state, we were able to house quite a few of them at the property in order to cut down on their travel costs, which we were quite excited about! The main house is big, with large gathering rooms for getting everyone together for meals, chatting, games, etc, and plenty of bedrooms to retreat to for quiet time. It has all the charm of an old Cape Cod house, while being totally unique and a blast to walk around and explore. You will absolutely love watching the sunrise over the ocean in the morning from your bedroom windows, and breakfast down in the kitchen was super cozy. The yard and beach are nothing short of exceptional: extremely beautiful, quiet, and relaxing. Laying out on the soft beach sand, and relaxing in the yard chairs up on the lawn are a must. Everyone that stayed at the house loved it, as did the guests at the wedding!

Idyllic Spot for our Wedding!
I don't have the words to describe how incredible our wedding weekend was, thanks to Catherine and her family's incredible home. We were able to have the backyard wedding of our dreams, and to house family members at the same time. We are beyond grateful.

The house itself was very “run down” and not what we expected.
The grounds were beautiful and beach lovely.
The house itself and the furniture was run down. The screen doors and wood steps were tattered and broken. The refrigerator was not adequate for that size house and had a broken freezer door. Locks and doorknobs fell off when trying to use them. The kitchen windows had mold. The drawers in kitchen were dirty where silverware and utensils were kept. This house could be exceptional if it was given some attention.

Perfect
The house was absolutely perfect for our large group. We decided to take a group vacation on kind of short notice, and because we had such a big group, finding a house wasn’t easy. Catherine was extremely open and accommodating and we really could not appreciate it more. About the house: First, the photos don’t really do justice. It is such a neat older house with character and history but is still really comfortable with lots of space to spread out or come together as a group. Some evenings we gathered around the piano for musical entertainment; other nights we sat around the fireplace talking. The large outdoor space was perfect for the children, and honestly, the adults too. We had plenty of room for a lobster picnic and oyster shucking out on the gorgeous lawn overlooking the ocean. I understand that the coastline here changes, but we were very lucky to have plenty of beach during our stay. The area feels very protected for close-in swimming, and at night, the beach was magical for stargazing. The neighborhood and neighbors were very nice, and Catherine was extremely communicative and easy to reach. Before we arrived she sent us not only a guide to the house, but a thorough guide to Chatham as well, which was extremely helpful. I’m thinking really hard about whether there is anything that could have been better, but I’m really at a loss. I suppose if you need lots of TVS in your vacation house, you might be disappointed, but we were there to spend time together as a group and to enjoy the beach, so we were perfectly content. The kitchen is not super modern, but it was large and met our needs (also, I understand a new stove was on the way, so even better). Also, many of the rooms connect to each other in a maze-like way, but if you appreciate the character of older houses, you’ll love it. Honestly, I could not recommend this house more. My husband and I wistfully joked that we wish we’d found it before we got married. And our vacation group is already talking about doing a reunion here at some point...
