About this cottage rental

The Cottage, 3 min walk down to the charming and pretty village of Mousehole and next to Carn Du House has stunning magnificent panoramic views sweeping across the whole of Mounts Bay. The cottage which sleeps 4 can be rented with the main house or separately. It has a large open-plan sitting room/dining room/kitchen, with a wood-burning stove and free Wifi throughout. Upstairs there is a bathroom and two double (can be twin) bedrooms, one with a terrace with beautiful views whatever the weather. Boats pass by below, the moon rises and shines a path across the water and if you wake at dawn you will see the sun rising over the horizon. All rooms look over the sea. From the living room there are french windows to a small terrace with a table and chairs for 4. And next to the cottage is a terraced grassy area with parking and a bench to sit and gaze out to sea. Looking at the map the land you see in front falls away down to the sea so you really feel as though you are perched above the ocean - yet you have all that Mousehole brings with its clean sandy tidal harbour and little cottages, Pub, charming alleys, shops with curios, cafes and restaurants.
The Christmas lights are famed throughout the land.

History: Carn Du House has a colourful history. In its time it has played host to, among others, Charlie Chaplin, Dylan Thomas, Charles Laughton, the artists Gwen and Augustus John and the Guggenheims who all visited Mousehole. This is a cottage of rare charm in one of the most beautiful parts of old Cornwall, the Penwith peninsula. You can look out to St Michael’s Mount, where, in 1047, Edward the Confessor established a chapel, now a fortress like house, lived in by the St. Aubyn family, which perches high on an island in Mount’s Bay, reached at low tide by a stone causeway. The coastline is gentle here, but becomes more rugged as you move west towards Lamorna Cove and Land’s End. With its abundance of prehistoric stone monuments, this peninsula was the last part of Britain to be taken over by the Anglo Saxons from the Celts. DH Lawrence said of it: “This Cornwall is very primaeval: great, black, jutting cliffs and rocks, like the original darkness, with a pale sea breaking in, like dawn…”

Beaches and Walks: It is also full of beautiful beaches. The beaches at Porthcurno and Porthchapel are 15 minutes by car from Carn Du, and beyond that the stretch of sand at Sennen, just beyond Land’s End, is one of Cornwall’s best surfing beaches. Visit the sunny Scillies for the day by ferry from Penzance or go on a sea fishing trip or look out for basking sharks.
Only a 4 min walk down the hill, Mousehole harbour is picturesque, tidal and clean, with a sandy beach ideal for small children to potter, with Hole Foods delicatessen, ice-cream and cafés close by. The Rock Pool Cafe is a favourite, sit looking out to sea over St Enys Isle - and 2 Fore Street or The Old Coastguard for dinner or just to sit in the garden with a drink as the sun goes down. There are walks behind the house through old Cornish fields to Paul and to the village, and the endless variety of the coastal path which can be as long or short as you like. Walk to Lamorna and stop for s delicious lunch of fresh crab and more at the Café, stop for a pint at the Lamorna Wink, or another favourite haunt The Logan Rock at Treen, after a walk to the ancient site of Treryn Dinas with its magnificent rock formations and where the colour of the sea and the beach rival the Mediterranean.

Shorter stays are available during low season at owners discretion. pls contact owner.

Carn Du Cottage is an amazing self catering accommodation with expansive views across Mount Bay. The large picture window in the lounge is wonderful to sit and watch the ever changing scene in the bay throughout the holiday. The balcony from the Master Bedroom is a great place to enjoy the Cornish Air and the sunshine. The cottage is spacious and very comfortable. It really is a home from home. We would highly recommend anyone looking for something special and within walking distance of Mousehole to book early for Carn Du.

We stayed here just after lockdown had finished. We were so glad we decided to go and not cancel. We were so worried how it would all be. The cottage was very clean and had plenty of cleaning stuff provided to help during our stay. The view was stunning. We knew from the pictures there was a special view but it’s nothing compared to seeing it in person. The rooms are spacious which was great as we had a cot. We didn’t walk down to the harbour as my son struggles with walking so knew it was too difficult for him. But I can imagine was a short walk. We visited the rock pool cafe near by such a fun place to rock pool with kids. Everything is near by but further enough that your not put off by all the super markets. It’s very convenient. We didn’t visit too many shops though. We booked click and collect at the local Tesco’s to pick up the next morning for the week. We were lucky with weather. The one bad weather day we spent half the day at the holiday home and was very comfortable and relaxed. The place has all you need. The internet was good. We would return happily. Worth the money. Avoid driving through mouse hole like advised. I accidentally did it and I got some well deserved stares. The only negatives was the parking. We have a huge 7 seater car. Very wide. The drive wasn’t available to us but we had a grass parking area which was definitely needed. But we struggled a little reversing on. But to have parking around there is scarce so we were grateful. The property owner was very pleasant and helped reassure us. We treated the property as we would our own home with respect. We took our own dog crate as our dog has one at home which she prefers if we go out and for night time. You would not know dogs have ever been in the property. Views from the family Dad: I laughed at the size of the tv but with a view like that you don’t need a tv! Mom: I loved the space to relax, the view, the huge bed, the balcony and the decor. Daughter 8: I loved using the binoculars to look out the huge window at the sea, boats and any sea creatures. Son 12: the internet was awesome Baby 5 weeks: favourite thing was falling asleep looking at the sea.

We were ecstatic we were able to get away on this break just sneaking in after restrictions were lifted on the 4th July and it didn’t disappoint. A charming little cottage perched right on top of the sea easy walking distance from Mousehole. The place easily fit 4 adults plus our 10 month year old son and provided everything we needed including highchair and cot. Our management contact was so helpful in our various queries and the owners gave us lots of useful tips on local walks. All rooms provided panoramic views of the sea and peninsula and we really enjoyed the outdoor terraces at both upper and garden level. Some of Mousehole’s restaurants were offering outdoor dining and takeaway services and we took advantage of the latter and enjoyed delicious local seafood at the cottage! We also managed to visit the Minack theatre, Lost Gardens of Heligan and lizard point and several beaches all within easy driving distance. As a long awaited and much needed holiday and first holiday with our son it was perfect :)
