About this house rental
If you are adventurous and free spirited, but still require all the amenities a luxury rental home has to offer then Pu`uhonua ('Place of Refuge') is the place for you. Experience tropical Hawaii at it’s finest in this unique pole house nestled just above Kealakekua Bay ('Pathway of the Gods') in Captain Cook, Hawaii. At this elevation you will enjoy the perfect climate and sweeping 180+ degree views of the ocean, Mauna Loa and Kealakekua Bay, in a quiet and comfortable setting.
Convenient location, just a moment away from the town of Captain Cook, with all of its amenities including one of the islands best grocery stores, fantastic restaurants, local shops and a wonderful farmers market.
Watch breathtaking sunsets from the spacious upper lanai that wraps around the house. Just 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona Airport, Pu`uhonua House is minutes from an array of activities including horseback riding, hiking, tennis, diving, dolphin and seasonal whale watching. Rent kayaks and kayak across the majestic Kealakekua Bay, swim with spinner dolphins and snorkel one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets, the Captain Cook monument.
Enjoy a variety of tropical fruits and flora grown on the property such as bananas, papayas, lemons, avocados, breadfruit, macadamia, coffee and mangos. We are close to some of south Kona’s finest beaches and minutes from great swimming, snorkeling and child safe beaches like Hookena, Manini, Keei, and Kealakekua Bay.
Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

One-of-a-kind home. More wildlife than people here which is how we prefer it. It had all the luxuries we needed (great kitchen and laundry). Choicemart and eggs close by. Great water pressure in the bathrooms.

We (7 adults ages 37 to 64) all loved this property and wouldn’t hesitant to book again in the future. The views from the main living area and lanai are awesome. The owner is easily accessible and responsive via text or phone call. There are lots of geckos that will be hanging around (mostly outside, occasionally inside), but they’re cute and don’t bother you at all. The coqui frogs will be serenading you in the evenings. You won’t find a nicer vacation rental in the area!

We loved our stay. Fantastic views, beautiful architecture, lots of space and great location

It’ an excellent Hawaii experience. Beautiful trees around the house and amazing view on the pacific. Very beautiful sunset. Every one in our group appreciated the birds and crickets songs every night but it can be disturbing for someone that has difficulty to sleep.
Well equipped for cooking. The only negative point is that rooms are smaller than what it look like from the pictures on the internet site.

Roomy and beautiful view

Beautiful yard, flowers and foliage. The driveway is a bit steep but can be accomplished. The house was clean minus ants in one bedroom, which was addressed quickly by the home owner. Nice to have full sized washer and dryer. Bathrooms were dated but clean. Plenty of service ware and dishes in the kitchen. It was nice to have a few condiments stocked in the frig. We took advantage of the good sized coolers available. Trash cans and recycle cans were clearly labeled. The nosy and cute green salamanders were everywhere, outside and waiting for us to leave to gain entry to the house. The frogs are LOUD but sleeping with earplugs made them nonexistent.
Note: there is NO air conditioning. While the daytime is hot and humid, nights have a cool breeze. There are fans available for each bedroom. We enjoyed our time at the house. The views of the ocean and sunsets are beautiful!! If you are NOT a lover of nature or salamanders, this lovely open-air home may not be for you.

Three generations of our family spent 4 relaxing nights at the house. The views from the main floor are incredible. My college-age son loved relaxing and reading in the hammock on the porch. If you are looking for a delicious breakfast out during your stay, do not miss the nearby Coffee Shack.

We spent wonderful time at the house in mid August 2023. The view was spectacular and the weather is quite pleasant in that part of island. The sound of frogs singing at night is something unique in the area. I recorded the sound and listen to it when I go to sleep.

This tree house was amazing! It was a joy to listen to the birds, frogs and admire the geckos. The view was wonderful with the house being clean and well stocked. There was even aloe available for our sunburns. Many beach items are available to use while at the home. The teenage boys in our group enjoyed the loft. I feel the the photos of home are accurate. We would love to stay here again!

Fantastic property with unbelievable views of sunset every evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home in the woods.

There is no denying that the views from this house are stunning. If our only time spent on the property was on the top floor, it would have been perfect.
However, the bedrooms leave so much to be desired. Nature noises are to be expected, but when you can hear every word of a conversation a floor above you, it's impossible to get a good night's sleep. In addition, the 'primary' bedroom barely has a screen door to keep shut, and has a shed for a bathroom -- tin roof at all. The gaps in the walls are too large to call cracks.

Such an amazing place. Absolutely special! Clean and beautiful.

Our stay in Captain Cook was one we will not forget. The home was incredible and an absolute dream for my kids. They loved the “treehouse” feel and the upstairs loft. Even though there were plenty of bedrooms, they all chose to sleep up there.
The floor plan of this home is a little confusing compared to what you see in the pictures. The main bedroom with an on suite is in a separate area from the rest of the home. It has a detached entrance. It is also two stories down from the kitchen and living space. The main entrance has stairs leading up to a floor that houses three bedrooms, the laundry room and a bathroom. You must go up another flight of stairs to get to the living room and kitchen. This wouldn’t have been an issue but I had my 75 year old in laws with me and my mother in law is blind. The stairs were very difficult for them. I had asked the host if there was a bedroom on the floor with the kitchen and I think there must have been a miscommunication because I was told there was. The only bedroom accessing the kitchen was the loft. This was not an option for my in-laws. The driveway is also very steep and would be nearly impossible for a car without four wheel drive to get up. Lastly, don’t forget your shampoo. The home had some body wash, but no shampoo or conditioner.
All in all, it was an amazing experience. Views from every angle, a responsive host, and the home was very clean.

While it had its quirks, we enjoyed our stay here. We all had enough space and bathrooms. The view was amazing. My 5-year old loved sleeping in the loft. There were many good restaurants nearby, but all on a cliff, so parking at them was a challenge. We enjoyed having the pack-n-play available, as well as beach towels/chairs/toys.
We had to be careful around the lanai railings, especially the bottom gap with our toddler. The steep driveway was shared with other people coming and going throughout the day. The ceiling in the bottom bedroom was too low for some of our party, but they stayed in another room.
The host was available whenever needed and provided recommendations during our stay, as well as instructions for the house. The host scheduled a contractor to install tile at the entrance while we were there, but was able to largely work around our schedule, so we hardly noticed that they were there.

This house is truly different with the custom wood everything. With all of the doors open on the main level we felt like we were part of the landscape with great views to the ocean and surroundings with beautiful full breezes. The kitchen was well appointed and the bedrooms adequate for our needs. The local wildlife (frogs, I guess) made for a unique serenade to go to sleep--don't know if this is a seasonal thing or not, but it was like sleeping outside--again unique! The property manager, Bruce, checked in multiple times to be sure we were all set and was responsive to our inquiries. Local food and grocery are very close by. Our group of seven siblings/spouses would definitely stay again.

Truly enjoyed our stay here. We had 11 family members that flew in from Alaska, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Idaho, and Texas. The upper lanai and views are unrivaled. It's truly one of those places that you can sit and enjoy for hours. It's peaceful and delightfully breezy. No complaints whatsoever. Thank you for providing us with a wonderful location for our family to enjoy all that the Big Island offers.

Been to the Big Island four times, Captain Cook is our favorite. This is the nicest house we have stayed in, by far. Close to the beaches, restaurants, groceries, wonderful Sunday farmer's market. Host has provided a comfortable clean unique gem.

Beautiful location, lovely architecture, very peaceful.
We enjoyed our stay during the holiday. The loft was perfect for our teens. Furnishings and decor is ready to be updated but still very comfortable. Thank you.

This was a unique, beautiful home in a great location! Truly an island paradise! The owner was very kind, responsive, and helpful. The property manager was attentive and quick to respond. We HIGHLY recommend this location and plan to return someday.

This is a beautiful home that is like a magical tree house. We had a lovely stay.
A few notes:
1. Transportation: you will need a rental vehicle. The driveway is steep, but easy to get used to. Google maps will lead you easily.
2. Location:
Beautiful hillside location with beautiful views of the jungle and ocean (in the distance).
Beware, the Coquee frogs make a lot of noise at night. I used earplugs and the fan at full blast and was able to ignore the noise pretty well.
3. Accessibility:
There are three sets of stairs from the entrance to the living areas. If you have elderly or disabled people in your party, this house will be difficult for them. My elderly father found the amount of stairs to be difficult. The rest of my family party had no issues.
4. Beds: comfortable enough for a vacation home. Bedrooms were definitely not soundproof (could hear every word said in the adjoining bedrooms and the one underneath).
5. Kitchen: kitchen basics were available. The outdoor grill did not work. Hesitated to contact host because we didn’t want to bother him further.
6. House information:
Don’t rely on the information sent to you via email from vacasa. For example, the Wi-Fi info emailed to me was incorrect. After contacting the host, we were told to read the binder of info located in the living room. Definitely felt a bit shamed by his response. . . Not a good feeling . . . And a bit frustrating.
FYI: checkout time is 10:00. This info is not in the binder ( after above experience, read the binder in full multiple times) and was only relayed to us on the morning of departure. Maybe I missed the memo elsewhere, but didn’t think I could trust the vacasa emails . . .
Overall, we had a lovely visit to this home. It was everything we expected it to be (with above caveats).

What a place! This meticulously constructed home was a unique wonder that helped make our 3 generation family vacation so memorable. Gorgeous lush views of hills and coast via walls of glass / screen sliders and wrap-around lanais, ample space and comfortable beds, plus numerous upgrades that maintain the character of this beautiful home. Private yet convenient location about a 15 minute drive to nearby snorkeling spots and beaches, close to grocery and restaurants/ take out. We enjoyed our stay away from the busier Kona and resort communities to the north but still drove to some of the amazing beaches there. Owner was easy to work with and very responsive. Of note, many tree frogs begin singing at dusk until early morning. You are amidst the wildlife! Also, this property has 3 levels, the lowest with one bedroom / add-on bath located within the main house but opposite the main entrance via porch access. A neighbor shared driveway access, which is steep but manageable. We felt very safe. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic stay at this location. Watching the sun come up each morning, sipping a cup of coffee on the porch — was just amazing. Lot’s of room and Bruce was fantastic to work with…

We loved the house! We all felt we had an "immersive Hawaiian" experience staying at this house. The sounds and smells of the lush property was an amazing contrast to our lives is northern Michigan and the DC area! The owners were helpful and provide a comfortable place to kick back and enjoy this area of the Big Island. Mahalo!

This is a very unique house. Amazing vistas! Beautiful grounds. A little difficult to find. Do not use the map on the VRBO app- sends you down the wrong road. The driveway is steep, recommend not checking in the first time after dark. Everything is open air, the entire upstairs is sliding glass doors and screens- so be sure you’re ok with some bugs and lots of geckos running all over. Not much privacy in the bathroom windows either- just make sure people aren’t walking around outside when you go. The serenade of frogs and birds after dark is lovely, but it is inescapable, making TV or dinner conversation tricky after dark. But it lulls you to sleep for sure. I wouldn’t expect anything different living in a tree house in the jungle.
Overall, nice stay, would stay again. The kids loved the loft, the house practically compels you to reconnect with nature.

What an amazing property, nestled in the trees of the jungle with all the jungle noises to lull you to sleep at night. The house was a traditional Hawaiian house with massive decks and views from every room. Extremely comfortable furniture, excellent appliances and stocked kitchen, and just so relaxing!
Can't wait to come back again for another stay!

What a fabulous place to stay!! The views from this house which sits on a hill, are stupendous! I could have stayed there all day everyday! But duty to our grands who we brought required we go out daily! If I came back i would consider right here. The owner, Bruce is so hospitable with his home. You can’t miss this property. You won’t regret it!!

Incredible Views
Very nice home with incredible views from all around the house. At night it sounds like a rainforest sound machine setting with all the birds and creatures singing. The property has gorgeous plants and grounds. The house was clean and had everything needed for a nice stay. It is incredibly close to Black Rock Pizza which we ordered twice during our stay it was so good! We enjoyed our time very much.

The Best Treehouse Ever
I have wanted to rent this house for 10-years or so. Everytime I tried to book it in the past it was already booked... but it was finally available this trip. I often stay in Captain Cook since it's away from town and tends to be quieter and has an Ohana feel. The frogs are a trip! You'll never see one, but you'll hear them. Better than the sound of the ocean and nothing like it anywhere else. The grounds have a real jungle-tropical feel and you feel like you're in a treehouse. There were 8 of us and never did we feel cramped. We spent a lot of time on the wrap around deck enjoying the views. The house is very clean and well stocked for all of our needs. We had the doors and windows open the entire time there.
I've stayed further down the hill before and it's a long trip to town. This house feels remote, but much closer to things, like the grocery store which is about a mile down the road. There are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes of the house. There is a new Poke place about 2-3 miles away, which was my go-to for lunch most days. Make sure to do a tour of the Bay View Coffee Farm just down the hill on Painted Church Rd.
There is a beach that you can see from the deck called Ke'EI Beach. You can get there on Ke'EI Rd. It's a dirt road and looks more like access to someone's house... just keep driving until you see an "End of the Road" sign and park. It's a hidden jewel.

Great Hawaiian Home
The house was a very fun layout and super clean! If you're looking for a house near a beach, this is not for you. But if you want a view and to get a taste of a true Hawaiian home it's perfect! We enjoyed our stay!

Mid-Summer Stay
After having to reschedule our 2020 trip due to COVID, we were finally able to visit the Big Island in July 2021 and loved our stay in this home! We loved the open air, the wrap-around porch overlooking to ocean and even loved sharing the kitchen with a family of geckos. The location was ideal; we didn't want to stay in busy Kona, so the Captain Cook area was a perfect location...quiet but not too far from anything.

The Amazing Treehouse
We fell in love with this beautiful home which we refer to as our Treehouse. We have been to the Big Island twice before but this was our first time to stay in this area. Immediately, this treehouse became home with its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful view. We will definitely stay here again! This was such an easy check in and check out process. So many local restaurants and a great grocery all near by. We can’t wait to go back!

Tropical magic
This was a magical place. So different from home in BC. Lush and tropical surrounded by nature and beauty at every turn. We had a fantastic time with our adult children; a vacation we will never forget.
