About this house rental
Set in fifteen acres, Baubesse nestles in the beautiful Alpilles hills close to Les Baux-de-Provence, an ancient village perched high on a crag, a short drive from St-Rémy-de-Provence. The area is a mecca for ramblers, joggers and cyclists.
Rentals are from Saturday to Saturday, in the French tradition.
Stay in a 400-year old stone house converted to artist's residence, rustic, full of character & charm. Relax by the swimming pool surrounded by cypress trees & an orchard of olive trees with amazing views stretching to the Mediterranean. Quiet, private, secluded. A garden full of flowers with a barbecue grill & tables for long happy meals with friends & family. Come share the magic & serenity, explore the region's architectural and cultural marvels.
Retreat from the everyday stress and surrender your senses to the sounds and smells of Provence: birdsong, cicadas, rosemary, thyme and lavender. Treat yourself to gourmet meals from local markets and restaurants, walk in the olive grove and the many trails in nearby hills and forest preserves.
The house is surrounded by pine and mulberry trees, cypresses and oaks with wonderful views on all sides. Behind is a fine olive grove and in front, the view stretches over unspoiled countryside to where the Mediterranean can be glimpsed on the horizon. Barely a mile away lies the brand new Domaine de Manville golf course. The garden around the secluded swimming pool is surrounded by a wild mountain landscape. The infinity pool is heated for swimming from April to October. In your deck chair you can see the cliffs of Les Baux.
Five minutes away by car you can pick up fresh croissants, and local fruits and vegetables in the village of Maussane. The vibrant village has a prize-winning greengrocer, fishmonger, butchers and bakers, as well as a bank, a post office, hairdressers and convenience stores. The main square is lined with shady plane trees and packed with restaurants, and café terraces to sip a pastis or eat a pizza. A local winery (Mas de la Dame) and an olive oil producer (Castelas) are just moments away. Almost every day of the week there is a farmers market in one of the nearby villages where you will find local produce, honey and handicrafts.
Les Baux is right in the heart of Provence, ideally positioned for short excursions and day trips. It is a short distance away and well worth a visit to see the magnificent ruins of the medieval château and the world-famous Carriere des Lumieres sound and light show. The beautiful winding walk through the ancient village to the promontory passes by many tempting boutiques.
Behind Les Baux in the Val d’Enfer is the five-star hotel and restaurant L’Oustau de Baumanière where you can go for an aperitif before heading back to cook your barbecue at Baubesse.
The nearby town of Arles hosts a world-class international photography festival every Summer, with hundreds of galleries, performance spaces and pop-up restaurants, medieval ruins and a Roman coliseum. Avignon has an important theater festival and the fabulous Palais des Papes. The Mediterranean and the Camargue are less than an hour's drive, Marseille just over an hour. You can also visit the Pont du Gard, Aigues-Mortes and other historic and architectural marvels.
Airports: Marseille (MRS) & Nîmes. Trains: Avignon TGV & Nîmes Pont du Gard TGV, Arles.

This property has soul, and Nissim is the perfect guardian. We have just left and our children (ages 6 and 11) are already asking when we will return. We all immediately felt right at home. Nissim went above and beyond to make sure that we were well taken care of, but also left with enough space and privacy to discover our own Provence. For our first night, he made us a dinner reservation at a wonderful small restaurant in town (Fleur de Thym) and took my husband into town for a quick overview of his favorite shops and restaurants. And on the last day, he came by the house with fresh croissants, a baguette for the road, and a New York Times. That was such a thoughtful gesture, and so welcomed. The kitchen and linen closets were fully stocked and there was not one thing that we wanted that the house didnt have. In fact, there were many family friendly surprises that the home came with that we didnt expect, including a ping pong table, pool toys, boules, and a piano. The beds were all very comfortable, especially those pillows! Note that while you can walk to town (a hearty walk) you will need a car to access anything beyond that. Also, while the weather in the summer is generally hot and dry, the Mistral wind can kick in and really cool things off. We were happy to make a fire and settle in with books. Highlights of our time here included:- Castle at Les Baux- Les Carrieres de Lumieres - Evenings on the square in Maussane- Hike in Les Alpilles - Boat ride to Les Calanques in Cassis- La Course Camarguaise in Arles- Pool time and the VIEWS from the house! The only thing that we regret is that we only stayed one week. We look forward to returning. Thank you, thank you Nissim!

We booked the beautiful villa Baubesse near les Baux de Provence for a weeks relaxing getaway and the pictures didnt do it justice. The setting is stunning, nestled in the foothills of the Alpilles with a view stretching to the Camargue. The owner Nissim couldnt have been more hospitable! So we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Every day we would walk in the Alpilles on tracks from the villa and relax by the pool in the afternoons. Nearby St Remy is worth a visit and can be reached on foot or by bus. There are lots of good restaurants nearby too but eating while enjoying the view was too good to pass up. All in all it was the highlight of our holiday and one of the nicest villas we have stayed in for some time. We would happily return.

Beyond Perfect!!!
Our time at this wonderful house in Les Baux was fantastic. The bedrooms, the fireplace, the morning view from the patio as we ate croissants, the heated pool as the sun dropped over the hill side… all were just beyond belief. It made our time in the South of France the very best of a vacation. Another great part of this house was the genuine ..”right at home” feeling we got as we walked through the door We spent a week here and having a fully stocked kitchen at our disposal was a huge plus.
Nissim, the wonderful gentlemen who owns the house, was friendly, helpful, and gave us fantastic service on several occasions. He helped with directions… gave suggestions on places to dine… and even calling in a restaurant reservation for us. I work in a hotel as a food and beverage manager… and the customer service we received here was beyond perfect !!!

Staying at Baubesse - "Paradise in Provence"
We returned to Baubesse in September, 2014, and loved every minute, as we did two years prior.
The location of the villa is awesome: a beautiful stone house with tall cliffs on two sides, looking down on a magnificent valley in the distance. There are well placed patios for dining and viewing the scenery, a great pool, and endless trails that lead to splendid vistas for the adventurous.
The villa is extremely comfortable with a number of recent improvements such as new beds. The kitchen is well stocked in modern appliances and cooking tools. as well as popular coffeemakers.
We easily fell into a pattern of making short day trips to amazing sites, while relishing days of total relaxation at Baubesse. Les Baux, St. Remy, Arles, Avignon and many more historic places are nearby. Restaurants in the area, particularly in Maussane, have gotten better and better, we loved Le Clos Saint Roch. Nearby wineries, olive oil mills, and markets make fresh Provencial foods within a few minutes drive.
Nissim, the villa's owner, continues to be the perfect host. He has wide knowledge about local happenings, art galleries and museums, eateries and markets. He is a pleasant and wonderful resource, taking great care of his guests, and generously offering a reduced rate to returning guests. And who doesn't want to return to
Paradise?!

You will not get closer to heaven
We have stayed here twice now and can only say it gets better every time.Return guests get 20 percent discount. The owner Nissim is brilliant and let's you enjoy your vacation. The peace, beauty and tranquility are second to none. We cycled out each day twenty miles to neighbouring villages. The swimming pool is superb and the the house and amenities are great especially the kitchen. We regularly shopped in Mausanne and will definitely go back unless you book before us .

Wonderful rental
We have both owned and rented VRBO properties, but this property was far beyond our expectations. The owner, Nissim, was easy to communicate with before our arrival and the payments through Paypal worked well. This house is positioned in the Alpilles above the valley below. The views are 360 degrees: valley below, limestone hills above, olive grove behind the house slightly above the swimming pool, lavender and roses blooming out the front view. The house itself is perhaps 200 years old with stone walls. Nissim had completely renovated this
Provencal house to be his residence. There are three bedrooms and three baths which is unusual in this part of France. The kitchen is fully equipped: spices, condiments, coffee and expresso machines, dishwasher, microwave, oven, etc. We found everything we needed and more there.
The small village of Maussane is five miles south of the house.
Here you will find an excellent small grocery, a
co-op bank with ATM,
several pastry shops, a
butcher, restaurants, pharmacy, etc. There is a weekly market in the village on Friday.
Les Baux castle can be seen as you approach the
road to the house.
Very important to us was the central location in this
part of Provence which allowed us to make day trip out to many places of interest each day.
Finally, we hope to return again in the future.
Thank you Nissim!

Home in Provence
A couple of weeks ago (early to mid-May) my husband and I and another couple spent a wonderful week here. We can’t begin to say enough about the beauty, charm and peacefulness of the place. The setting is very private and completely quiet except for the birdsongs that change throughout the day. And the view is tremendous: it stretches out from the greenery and spring flowers of the hill where the house is situated, to the towns and cities of Provence. The property is large enough that each person can find his or her own private space when desired and then come together for meals at any of several spots outside.
Maussane-Les-Alpilles is the closest village and has the most wonderful boulangeries, patisseries, green grocer and butcher. Each morning some of us drove down to the village (10 minutes) for fresh croissants, bread, and quiche while the others made coffee and set one of the outdoor tables.
We did cook several dinners at “home,” but there are some excellent restaurants close by in Maussane. Our favorite was La Fleur de Thym. Nissim was kind enough to make reservations for us for our first night.
Nissim is the owner and a most gracious host. As others have noted, he seems to appear just when you have a question and then leaves you to your privacy. There are books in every room of the house, on just about every subject imaginable, and most are in English.
The location is ideal for day trips to Nimes, Arles, Aix, and other Provencal sights, but be sure to make time for market day in Saint-Remy-de-Provence (15 minutes away). The town is gorgeous and the market is huge. Free parking is easy near the TI office.
Renting a house has many advantages like being able to cook meals with the stunning produce available at village markets as well as more space to relax in than even the nicest of hotels.
A car is essential

Family of six in the end of October
We were a family of six. Two grandparents and my son and his family with two girls one of 9 and the other of 12.The location was magical. Overlooking the whole valley under Les Baux and the surrounding areas. Removed yet close to everything. One can walk out of the house and walk for hours on the thousands of trails in the Alpilles. We did a lots of excellent biking and walking and visiting the surrounding towns of Avignon, Arles and Saint Remy but there are a lot of sightseeing possibilities not too far from the location of the house.
Our two granddaughters swam in the pool (in the end of October !) and we all played many games of ping-pong.
It was a very well equipped house with anything you would dream of needing even with a Nespresso machine. Nissim, the owner is the most welcoming, generous and interesting man he makes you feel not like a renter but as a welcome friend . If you have any questions about where to go or where to eat he has the answers.
The house was relatively clean, not manicured which added to it's charm and we never felt like we had to walk on eggshells. Warning. The owner has two cats that when the house is not rented roam freely in the house. They are not around when the house is rented. Since my husband is allergic to cats he had some trouble sitting on the sofas or cushioned chairs. I only thought about this later but of course we could have covered the furniture with a clean sheet and it would have solved his problem.
We had a fantastic vacation and we will certainly go back.

Amazing stay in Provence
We are two families with 4 little children(6,4,4 and 1 year old) who stayed in this beautiful property in July. Everything was perfect - stunning view and beautiful surroundings of flowers and olive trees, nice and clean house and large pool- heavenly and peaceful stay! I am sure that view from the terrace is one of the best in Provence- you don't need to go anywhere else to enjoy- just sit on the terrace with a glass of local wine and enjoy the nature and serenity. The kids loved the pool and every time we went to the nearby village and towns - the only thing they wanted is to come back at those and swim in the pool. They also enjoyed running around the property which is huge. Nissim- the owner - is a great host and a very kind person. He met us when we arrived, showed us around and took us to the nearby village- Maussane- where he showed us the place to buy local produce, great bakery and suggested a few restaurants. We really enjoyed the place with fresh mussels - I don't remember the name of it but the mussels were the best I ever eaten. We also loved the bakery he suggested. Nissan would provide you with all recommendations needed for your stay and also will suggest the places to visit. We really enjoyed the small and cozy streets of Le Baux which is only 2 km away. We visited the Chateau and the Carrieres De Lumieres - our kids loved both the castle and wonderful light show. We enjoyed shopping at the St Remy market and exploring the nearby town of Arles and Avingnon, and visited the museum of lavender. I can't say enough about Nissim and his house- we couldn't stop talking about it and started thinking about moving to Provence) thank you Nissim for your hospitality and amazing time in Provence. We can't wait to come back

Magical Stay in Les Baux de Provence
Baubesse is a stunningly beautiful property, the house is warm and inviting, and Nissim is a thoughtful, welcoming host. With Nissim’s directions, finding Baubesse was no problem: the property is about 1/2 hour from the Avignon TGV station and 15 min. from Saint-Remy de Provence. It is centrally located and perfect for exploring the region. The lovely village of Maussane is 5 minutes away. There you’ll find a charming town square, restaurants, markets, bakeries and patisseries.
Les Baux de Provence, with its castle ruins perched high on a limestone cliff, is breathtaking. The country road that leads to Baubesse is near the base, only a few minutes away by car, bike or on foot. Nissim’s property is the last on this road. The house is a classic stone, Provencal country dwelling. Yet, it is also spacious: with a layout and sufficient rooms to allow being together or privately retiring for reading, a nap or early bedtime.
Baubesse is surrounded by acres of olive trees, fields of herbs and craggy white hills. These hills are an easy 10-15 hike from the house and they contain the remnants of old limestone quarries which are an adventure to explore. On a clear day you can see the Mediterranean.
Nissim greeted us upon arrival and instantly made us feel welcome and comfortable. He is friendly and tremendously helpful, providing tips on sightseeing, farmers’ markets, where to shop for groceries and even making introductions to a local winery (Mas de la Dame) and an olive oil producer (Castelas). Nissim occupies a second house, not far from the main house, and he is always available should you need him.
We stayed at Baubesse one week (not long enough) in late April. For the first few days the weather was sunny and warm. We enjoyed exploring Les Baux, shopping the farmers’ market in Saint-Remy, hiking to the old quarries and relaxing by the pool. Towards the end of our stay, a mild storm passed through. In the mornings we made excursions to Arles and other nearly towns. In the afternoon and evenings, when temperatures cooled, we appreciated the comforts of the house: snug with room heaters and a burning fire, perusing the thousands of books in Nissim’s library, admiring the artwork (much of it by Nissim), preparing dinners, with fresh ingredients from farmers’ markets, and opening bottles of local wines. The house was enchanting from the warmth and glow of the large fireplace and dozens of candles.
THANK YOU, NISSIM!!

New York resident
The house has one of the most beautiful views in Provence...on top of a hill that only has 8 homes and this one is at the top...your only neighbor is the owner Nissim... I was at first nervous knowing the owner would be there, but it was a blessing...he is so nice and helpful, especially since my wife and I had never vacationed in France before...he brought us into the charming small town 5 minutes from the house and helped us get some food from the market and bakery...he was a big help, since we knew very little French. He was available for any questions (only if you needed his help...he was not nosy)....he would help us with directions and sites to see...the grounds around his house are beautiful and very spacious....I recommend staying here very highly.

Spectacular property!
This was a spectacular property to spend a week at with our three children. The house is beautiful inside and out and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Nissim was so friendly and helpful and a wonderful person to talk to. He made sure we were comfortable and was very happy to answer any questions we had about the area. The surrounding countryside with the olive trees behind the house make it a perfect setting to relax but also a great place for kids to run around and play. The fruit and vegetable store in Mausane is full of the best produce we have ever had and the Carrieres De Lumieres is a wonderful light show our whole family enjoyed. There were also many nice villages nearby to visit. Thank you so much Nissim for such a wonderful stay; we missed your house as soon as we left it and our kids say it was their favourite part of our whole trip!

An experience of a Lifetime... Savour the moments...
If you are planning to Go to Provence ... Stay Here and Visit with Nissim for an Experience of a Lifetime !!! We arrived a little later than was expected due to a re-route in the town and thankful for the directions we had received from our new friend Nissim, who was patiently waiting for us. Nissim greated each of us, 5 ladies, with a hug and European kiss and kindly helped us to unpack our suitcases from the car. We then walked around the spectacular house and spent a little time to take in the wonderful view, as the Sun was just getting ready to set! Cameras were clicking feverishly in the house and at the view - It's difficult to put it all into words, here are a few .. SPECTACULAR, DIVINE, BREATH TAKING Nissim, was OUR ANGEL... He was concerned about dinner - we were tired and needed to unpack and decide what we would do over the next few days - he suggested Pizza/Wine and he would go with some of us into town to get them and bring them back to the house !!! WE SAID YES YES YES! Amazing .. it was a Pizza Van in the center of town and fabulous ... We LOVED the house - Villa - the exterior views, the interior uniqueness - art, sculpture, music, books - something for everyone - a place to relax, think, appreciate the beauty of the place, friendships, old and new - and a place to explore adventures!! We visited Moussane, the closest village to the house - GREAT cafes and a quaint place to just hang out and have a glass of wine or beer! The next day we were off to Chateau to see the magnificient views we could see from there .. it was a beautiful sunny warm day and we spent it exploring the area .. Amongst the other areas we were able to explore were: Cassis, Arles, St. Remy, Rousillion - the City of Ocre - a definite must see & Gordes. The best part of a vacation is meeting the people and learning about the various areas ... We were also blessed to meet Nissim's son, Jules, on a rare, rainy day when he stopped by and helped us set up a roaring fire with Nissim. He was also a wonderful young man who definitely shared his dad's zest for life! Nissim has become a wonderful Friend and he has such a unique perspective on Life and the World ! He spent time with us together and us individually as we chose to talk ... Never, unless we initiated. He always was a blessing to US and we ALL are grateful for the time we had with him ... Everything on the website was 100% accurate !!!!

A View and a Story
My wife, daughter, nanny + another couple stayed at this property September 18-23, 2012. My deepest regret is that we didn't allocate more time to this leg of our vacation. My other regret is ranking this place so highly since I want to return to this property - and this gem may become so popular that future bookings may be difficult. So on to some specifics: the terrace view is one of the best in Provence. You don't need to go any place for a great view. You might even be tempted to stay put and wile away the day on the terrace, drinking in the view, along with some great local wine. Too sunny? No problem. The terrace has an electronic awning that comes out with the push on the remote to give you the shade of your choice. And if you have a little child (we have a 4-year old daughter); you won't be able to tear the kid away from this place. My daughter loved the pool (well maintained; along with pool furniture and a covered area for shade). There are also rolling meadows where your children can have their own adventures - including plucking figs off fig trees. The home itself is well maintained and steeped in the life history of the owner (Nissim Marshall). Nissim is an artist and his beautiful art work is present throughout the home. And then,......the books ! To refer to Nissim as a "man of information" is an understatement. In his home you may find every notable work of literature over the past 50 years - and more. Nissim lives next to the property and has an amazing life story - treat him to dinner, you won't regret it! Plus Nissim will gladly provide local recommendations on anything you seek-Nissim has contacts everywhere; and he'll help you in any way he can (we forgot some luggage on the train in Avignon from Paris; our luggage ended up in Marseille; and with one phone call, Nissim was able to get a guy to drive in our luggage to the property the very next morning; Nissim saved our vacation right there!). For exploring Provence, the property location couldn't be more ideal, and the village of Maussane-les-Alpilles is at your doorstep for dining, wining, and grocery shopping. And the home has everything you need (fully equipped kitchen, dinnerware, linens, hot showers, etc), including speedy wireless internet - and Nissim's eclectic DVD collection. We are definitely returning and highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, comfortable, stay in Provence.

I was one of five adults who recently returned from two weeks at Baubesse. It was heavenly, even more beautiful than the pictures can convey. I can't wait to go back!
The villa is located high in the Alpilles Mountains from which you can see the beautiful countryside of Provence for miles and miles. The nearby towns of Maussane and St. Remy are wonderful places to eat, shop and experience the local life.
The house is large and comfortable with modern appliances including WI FI and satellite TV. There are many outside areas to sit, read, and swim, so wonderful that we seldom wanted to go anywhere else!
Nissim, the villa's owner who lives nearby, was extremely helpful and generous, as well as greatly informed about the region. He introduced us to local friends which made our visit more personal.
Our entire group was truly impressed by Baubesse, and extremely happy that we had the opportunity to experience Provence at this magical place.

Lovely place to meet the sunrise surrounded by mountains; peaceful and calm - perfect place for those seeking to trade city rush into pure nature (that was the biggest advantage for me personally). A house is comfortable and internet access brings some civilization there. Grill outside the house is a good way to spend a lovely evening. Well... To make it short - we really appreciated the time spent there. Thanks to the landlord!

Great first holiday in Provence!
Great location offering stunning views on the gorgeous surroundings; quiet and secluded but also very close to all neccessary amenities - charming villages offering all fresh saveurs de Provence (grocery, market, butcher...). Ideal place for shorter or longer trips to beautiful hystorical places (Baux, Arles, Camrgues, St Remy...), alternatively for hiking and biking or just for hiding yourself with a book.
The house is charming, stylish, holding the owner artistic and cultural personal touch and making it much more attractive than usual accomodation sites; it also has all commodities and appliances you may need. The house was big enough for our group of three couples and four children.
The pool and outside areas are great offering various spaces where people can either get together or spend private quiet time.
The only regret was that we booked only one week so had to leave earlier that we'd wished. We definitely plan to come back and spend more time there!

Everything was perfect in the week we spent in this house:
- the house is very nice, clean, very well furnished and stylish
- the pool is very nice, well maintained and heated. Though we did not spend too much time in it, we were too busy exploring the region
- the host is very professional in preparing the place for the guests. He is also very quiet and leaves total intimacy to the guests.
- and of course, the area. Not only the place where the villa is located is gorgeous, but the surroundings are very nice and ideal for walking and Hiking. Basically you don't need to go far, you can do most of your hiking from the villa
- finally, the Baux village has a lot of very nice places to visit and discover (beside hiking), such as the Chateau, the Baux village and the Carriere de lumiere.

We loved our stay at this house. The heated pool, flanked by cypress trees, with spectacular views of the Alpilles and the surrounding area, was a gorgeous retreat. The canopy over the striped poolside chaise lounges was perfect. The house itself, with stone floors throughout and a dramatic central fireplace in the living room, was charming and comfortable. The newly renovated kitchen was a delight. The house, which sits on its own 25-acre site that includes an olive grove, was EXTREMELY private, something we found very appealing. We stayed with our two young children, and the place was just right for us. It would also work well for older children or a romantic getaway. Convenient location for drives to St. Remy, Arles, Avignon, etc.
