About this cottage rental
Welcome to “Cozy Cabin," your private cottage in the woods of Madeline Island in Sunset Bay of Lake Superior. Here you can check in, unplug, and go with the flow. Retreat with a book – or write one. Wander the island in search of myriad wildlife, or simply yourself.
***Please see important information at the end of this description before you book.***
A mile from La Pointe means shops, restaurants, and nightcaps are within walking distance. Bring a kayak to paddle the gitchi-gami waters at your own speed. The screened porch provides its own cozy getaway, and the shared dock offers a fabulous view of Bayfield and Basswood Island. If you're lucky enough to be here in the summer, you'll have the best shoreline seats to watch the spectacular sailboat races. When the sun sets, you can look forward to a night on the town, or the best night's sleep of your life – it's your choice. ***Please note: dock is shared with guests at the main cabin and it is not private to Cozy Cabin guests. The dock is accessed by walking past the main cabin and down to the water. When guests overlap on the dock (which honestly isn't often), we have found friends and memories are made or we make ourselves scarce!***
Cozy Cabin welcomes you with sunshine, a fully stocked kitchen, a wood-burning stove, a pullout sofa for additional guests, and more!
A note from Emma (your host): we would love to have you as our guests at Cozy Cabin. We take SO MUCH pride in being great hosts (seriously- look at our reviews) and we truly want you to love your vacation with us. Please do not hesitate to ask for something specific that will make your trip to Madeline Island special. You can text/call/email me anytime and I will always be available to answer any questions and help with any needs along the way. We want to make this a 5 star experience and will do anything we can to make that happen.
We have a few things we ask from our guests. It has been our experience that this list is no big deal for most guests, but not all guests want this level of participation. If it doesn’t work for you- we may not be the greatest fit for your vacation and that is okay! Please do not book with us if you have any issues with the following...
A Cozy Cabin Guest will be a-okay with:
*Slow WiFi: this probably isn’t your place if you rely on a strong connection to work or stream. After all, it’s an island and internet is on “island time”. Cozy Cabin is truly a place to unplug. With that said, we do have WiFi and sometimes it works great. We just can’t promise it always does.
*WE DO NOT PROVIDE ANY DECORATIVE PILLOWS, LINENS, BLANKETS, PILLOWS, ETC. Many of our wonderful guests bring their furry friends and we love that! We do not, however, love what's left on the linens and it is very difficult to keep things clean (to our standards and yours) when we are running this operation from the Twin Cities. Therefore, you will be bringing your own sheets (queen for both beds), pillows, blankets, bath towels, beach towels, hand towels, shampoo, soap, pantry items (spices, sugar for coffee, etc…), ziplocs, & napkins. We do not have laundry in Cozy Cabin. Sincerely- if you are not okay with this, we 100% understand and we just ask that you don't book with us.
*We are on a septic holding tank, so we ask that you use your best judgment to conserve water for toilets, showers, dishes, etc…
*We do not have someone collect garbage until the end of your stay and we have found that many guests want to be able to remove garbage and recycling as you go. Because there are little bear creatures on the island, it’s not an option to leave anything outside of Cozy Cabin. We suggest removing your garbage and recycling by bringing it to the “Recycling Center”, located between Cozy Cabin and the town of La Pointe. You will see hours posted outside of the center and the very nice men who run it are happy to help direct you once you’re there. Also, kids love it!
*We run this from the Twin Cities and you are our eyes and ears for anything that needs attention. We strive to make things perfect for you, but we also ask that you are flexible guests who can let us know when something needs attention and we will occasionally ask for your participation in remedying things.
*While there is property access to the lake, there is no view of the lake from the cabin. The Cozy Cabin is nestled in the woods.
* We love our furry friends and understand how special it can be to vacation with them. We just ask to approve the pets in advance, but we do not require an extra deposit.
*Our L-shaped dock is no longer L-shaped as seen in the photos. Along with the majority of dock owners on the island, half of our dock was destroyed in the fall of 2017. We have been advised not to rebuild it until we can figure out what the mighty Lake Superior is doing over the next few years. You will still be able to experience amazing sunsets and beach fun!
***Please make note of the ferry schedule- it is limited this year and there is no other way over. Pay close attention to the date range, color coding, and "to Island" or "to Bayfield". It is very easy to miss the last ferry if you are not paying close attention to the schedule for your visit.***
We want to make sure your stay is excellent and we are open to any and all feedback & requests. We would love to have you as our guests at Cozy Cabin!

Just about everything went great during our July, 2024 stay at Cozy Cabin on Madeline Island. Easy check-in/out, and everything was as Emma explained in the description. Wi-fi was pretty lousy, as she said it sometimes is; we found it best just to turn the wi-fi off on our phones, and let the cellular service (which was fine) do the work. We did have a brush with a small bear on our 3rd day there. It never came really close to us or the cabin, but it did stroll by and seemed to spend a lot of time at the other cabin on the property. We had been planning on grilling some steaks for dinner that night, but decided against it, and ate in town. Be warned that, even in July, the town pretty much rolls up by 6 or 7pm. Luckily there was one restaurant still open until 9 for us (The Pub). The one hot spot open later is the infamous Tom's Burned Down Cafe (for drinks, not food). Some people hate it, but we went with the flow and loved it. All in all, a nice trip. Thanks to Cozy Cabin owner Emma!

What can I say. I honestly didn't want to leave. The cabin was perfect and the area and people there were beyond anything I expected. I definitely want to go back. Thank you so much Emma!

Loved the location--you really can have it all at the cozy cabin: lake, woods, trails, proximity to town. Recommend that you bring your own drinking water, as the well water has a distinct flavor. Overall, this was a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the island.

We enjoyed our 4-night stay in Cozy Cabin in the Woods! It was the perfect setting for us to enjoy the quiet of nature and birds! The cabin was very clean and comfortable. It had everything we needed. Perfect 1-BR, 1-BA with kitchen, dining area and screened in back porch! We also had access to Lake Superior via a dock on the property!
Emma F, our host, was not only very thorough with instructions and directions; but she was also very responsive to any questions or concerns. She made us feel very welcomed.
We would definitely stay here again in future visits to Madeline Island. A perfect home away from home!!!

This was our second stay at the Cozy Cabin for our family, and we loved it all over again. Other than a bear that strolled casually past the bedroom window from 10 feet away, we had complete privacy in the woods. Love having the little sandy/rocky beach and dock to watch the sunset and having town just a short bike ride away for an ice cream cone. Super responsive communication, and very clean. Can't wait for next year!

Very quiet, peaceful cabin nestled in the woods. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and Emma was quick to respond to question about how to access Lake Superior from our cabin. Unfortunately, access is directly past another cabin (fortunately, it was not being used while we were there) which was uncomfortable passing so close to another cabin. Lake is beautiful for swimming. Cabin itself seemed overpriced compared to other VRBO's in the WI but you have to consider you are on an island and rentals are limited. Overall, very nice place though.

This is a modest and comfortable cabin in the woods.
For our 3 night visit it was great. We did not cook much - 2 breakfasts and 1 grilled supper - so cooking was adequate for us this time. If we would have had our family w kids, for a longer stay, it might have been a bit harder. Minimal dishes and dishwashing space.
2 suggestion: *add a clothes drying rack or line...for wet swimsuits and for bath towels. * and some type of luggage rack or narrow bench - maybe in the hallway - for suitcases.
We have a comfy bed at home....even though the cabin is cozy and just fine, a real mattress on the bed would add just enough comfort to have folks come back.
We've been annual visitors to Mad Island for 25+ years and never had to bring linens. It seemed different - but not a hardship. :)
thanks so much for your notes and your friendly welcome to "call if we have any needs" That is very sweet.
Best regards - Barb and Charlie, St Paul

Thank you for another wonderful week on Madeline Island! We had a concern upon arrival and Emma was quick to address it for us. This is our fourth stay and it did not disappoint. We really felt comfortable and could tap into some favorites on the island. We thoroughly enjoyed swimming with our dog at the dock. The location is so convenient to get to town and near a nice trail and side roads for walking. We look forward to returning in the future.

Loved the communication with the owner, they were very responsive to any questions I had. Loved the location of the cabin and the amazing waterfront dock and views. I was able to see amazing sunsets and northern lights too. Perfect place in paradise. I hope to return again next summer. The place was clean and was so enjoyable and private. I saw lots of deer and eagles too.

So we had reserved the Cozy Cabin for a week, but on our drive up, the wonderful owners called and said there was an unexpected issue at the cabin and it couldn't be occupied, BUT... they offered another place to us that was wonderful. That was an amazing gesture and we had a great time. We can say, however, that we got to see the Cozy Cabin and from our peeks inside and around, it looks super cozy indeed with nice appointments and a great back porch. And from there it's just a very short walk down past the owners' home to the dock on the Superior, looking back at Bayfield. These are owners you can trust to give you a great experience, no matter what it takes! Will book again for sure.

The property was beautiful in the woods And on the island. It was extremely clean. It looked very modern. The beds for our age group could be more comfortable 60+ years old as we tried both. Thank you for sharing your property with us.
We had an amazing trip on returning to the island for this Vacation.

33rd year on the island! We have gone from camping, to camper, to cabin in the woods. The amazing bonus with this property is private access to the water!

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the Cozy Cabin. After a day of either cycling around the island, paddle-boarding from the dock, canoeing on Bog Lake, or hiking at Big Bay State Park, the cabin was sanctuary to enjoy good food, good rest, and a view of the towering pines. This was our second visit to the Cozy Cabin, and we will be back.

This was our second summer staying at Cozy Cabin! We love the quite location on the lake and the private beach there’s access to. We have a fishing boat that we bring with us and can pull it up to the dock for short stops. Launching at the marina has been easy. Cabin is always clean. The location being close to town is also convenient. Emma is always great to work with! Looking forward to the next time we can make it back!

Clean and comfortable
We had four nights here with our two kids and dog. We biked to downtown and to the Town Park, and got a nice tip from Priscilla about a quiet beach to try. Really loved having access to the dock for sunset and quick dips. The property was exactly as described and very clean and thoughtful. Hope to stay here again next year!
4.9
Secluded but convenient
It’s secluded so you don’t feel like you are right next to your neighbors but it’s a quick two minute drive into town. Beautiful home and it was a wonderful weekend for us and the pup. Emma was extremely responsive and overall it was a great stay!

Cozy Cabin Retreat
We had an amazing time. Cabin was well stocked with kitchen items for cooking meals, kids and dog enjoyed the private dock and sand beach, and Emma was so kind and accommodating! Madeline Island was beautiful with plenty of outdoors fun! We definitely would stay again.

A quiet place in the woods
This is a perfect getaway in a quiet spot on a quiet island. Madeline Is has changed little over the past 30 years. The cottage is well appointed and very comfortable. The owner communicates well and is quite responsive. Our best rental ever!

Cozy Cabin Indeed
Nothing but peaceful, quiet and serine! Can’t say enough about this “CozyCabin”! It’s off the road a little ways in the woods, this quaint cabin is very clean and has everything you need from a screened porch, dishes, full bath just to name a few. A short walk down the rest of the driveway/path and your at beautiful Lake Superior looking north at some of the Apostle Islands.. Bring your lawn chairs down to the pier and take in the sound of the water and awesome sunsets.
The owners are great and Emma has a ton of information and ideas to help make your stay pleasant and fun. Communication was great and I could tell that Emma wanted to make sure we had everything we needed to have the best stay possible.
Can’t wait to come back! And Thanks again for your hospitality!

Late fall getaway in quiet location
The cozy cabin is exactly as described in the listing. It's a simple but updated 1 bedroom 1 bath cabin. The interior was clean, the kitchen had plenty of pots, pans, and utensils. Good water pressure in the shower, decent bed, and a cozy quiet location.
We went in late October, and the island is pretty much shut down, no open restaurants and bars, but that was fine. We brought our own food and the small grocery in town had a couple small items we forgot. We spent the week hiking the trails and in the state park, and just enjoying our time away from work. Internet worked fine for us, maybe it's not great in the high season but we had no issues.
Couple minor things could use fixing (light switch on reading lamp, stuff like that) but it was perfect for us.

We needed a tranquil place surrounded by privacy, quiet and the beauty of nature to disconnect from the stresses of the distracting internet world.
We found it on the cozy cottage and are grateful.
On our first morning, my husband and I enjoyed coffee and the unhurried sense of a week ahead. Biking, sailing, hiking and riding the ferry to-and-fro from Bayfield.
I lived in Turkey years ago on the Aegean and still remember the stars at night. On our fourth night on the island the clouds cleared and we sat on the dock and identified constellations. Gazing at the night sk y was similar to my memories of being somehow "removed" from it all. Beautiful and larger than we were.
Be sure to take two or three good-to-freeze casseroles with you and some nice bottles of good cabernet. The petite freezer still held both the casseroles just right and we enjoyed dinner with the sound of the crickets and one another.
Emma was a great host and she suggested we stock up on perishables in Ashland; we are glad she did. We bought some of the most delicious baked goods we have ever purchased from the bakery. Those peanut butter cookies and banana nut muffins we purchased from their bakery were our wonderful "bete noire."! We worked them off riding our bikes all over the island.

Clean comfortable, great location. Secluded and beautiful dock on the lake. Dog friendly ( we brought an extra sheet for the couch as we know dog hair flys around!) Wonderful bike ride around the island and our dog especially liked the beach and hiking in big bay state park. Suggest to bring all your own food for cooking as the store was not stocked . Dinner at the pub and the beach house on the patio was great. Loved using my own duvet and towels! Highly recommend, we will be back!

What a Lovey Stay at Madeline Island's Cozy Cabin
Our stay at Cozy Cabin on Madeline Island was wonderful. The property was as advertised and just the right size for us. Clean, functional and cozy. Access to the lake front was an added bonus, with wonderful views. Cozy Cabin served as our base for living accommodations and relaxation as we participated in a Madeline Island NIght Sky and Milk Way photography workshop. We plan to return to Madeline Island in the future and would love to rent this property again!

Relaxing & Convenient
The cabin is super cozy. My favorite thing is to sit on the dock with my favorite drink watching the sun set. You can easily bike, or even walk , to the restaurants.

Sooooo Cozy!
We really enjoyed our stay! Some days we went kayaking over at Big Bay, some days we just hung out on the little back porch in the cabin and read books. The woods come right up to the cabin and the air smells sooooo sweet! We had the property all to ourselves, which was nice (there is a larger house between the cabin and the lake that shares the dock).
We were impressed with how well stocked the kitchen was given that it’s relatively small. We were able to provision ourselves nicely. The Cagin is a mile from La Pointe, so easy to walk, bike or drive in to town for take out at Cafe Seiche or to grab milk at the market.
The owner was so easy to talk to and very helpful. AND the sunsets of the dock were spectacular!

Another wonderful stay at Cozy Cabin
This was our third time staying at the Cozy Cabin and it was just as comfortable and relaxing as ever. Emma is a wonderful host and inevitably ends up saving us with a forgotten item. She is also quick to answer questions or deal with things that inevitably pop up. We love the location near town and the beaches. And the cabin itself has everything we need to cook and relax. We can’t wait to return!

Cozy cabin is ideal for a quiet time to recharge. Simple place in the woods on Lake Superior. If you’re looking for kayaking and biking time this could be the place for you! It’s ideal for that. If you want good restaurants and pubs, nite life stay in Bayfield. The waterfront is rustic and clean, we spent a good part of our time playing by the water, big fun!
The thing that stands out to me is how quiet the cabin is, all day long. Also the pristine lake! Mornings the lake was like glass, best kayaking ever!
Emma is a very accommodating and friendly host. The cabin was very clean and inviting.
Always respect the lake and take only what it gives you! Be safe.

Perfect Getaway Spot!
My husband and I (and our two dogs) spent five nights at the Cozy Cabin. Perfect getaway spot on the island!
Emma was fantastic to work with! We even got to meet her while we were on the island; what a ray of sunshine! She had great communication throughout the whole process.
The Cozy Cabin was clean when we arrived and had all of the kitchen pots and pans we needed for cooking meals.
We didn’t mind bringing our own towels and linens, as it made the place feel more like home. We’ve stayed at a lot of places where there aren’t enough towels and linens anyway.
We enjoyed the little private beach and dock for afternoon swimming and kayaking. It is close enough to town, but far enough away and nestled on a beautiful, quiet wooded lot. We’ve stayed at other cabins on the island and really liked this location. We’ll definitely be back!

Our trip was amazing and just what we needed! Cozy Cabin was a great little spot for some peace and quiet while still being close to town. The screened back porch was a wonderful place to relax and listen to the wildlife. We spent lots of time at our little beach just a short walk from the cabin. Loved the relaxed atmosphere of La Pointe!

Cozy Cabin was perfect for our stay! Super clean and nicely updated. Had everything we needed (even sharp knives! If you rent often enough you know this is a rarity!) A couple of nights we used the pull out bed and it was comfortable. Quick responds from Host . Close to town. Just a great place to stay!
