About this house rental
If you are looking for a classic mountain getaway, with a superb location in the Nantahala National Forest - on Lake Nantahala - this is your place! By 'classic' we mean it was built by our children's great-grandparents as a mountain vacation home and fishing base back in the '60s. It is NOT a million dollar McMansion thrown up a few years ago that will cost a fortune to rent. It's our family lakehouse. And, we're happy to rent it to you.
This vacation get-away is located on Lake Nantahala with direct access to a private dock and absolutely beautiful views of the lake and mountains. The lake can be enjoyed for swimming, fishing and boating. Many other outdoor activities are within arm's reach of the property.
The location of the house on the lake is something special, a place where you can retreat to get away from the grind of normal life. It is a true escape, nestled away in a stand of enormous poplar trees with a view of the large lake area in front of the distant dam. The hours melt away as you settle into a life of mountain informality, fantastic natural surroundings and wonderful fellowship with family and friends.
The house was one of the first properties built on the lake, and has been maintained and updated with modern amenities. The two-level house is ideal for families and groups of friends. The upper (driveway) level has two bedrooms and one large sleeping area with a screened-off double bed, two single beds and a couch bed. The lower level features a family room with a wood burning fireplace, a large, well-equipped kitchen, and an outside patio facing the lake with a gas grill. It has all the character of a family mountain cabin, with added features like remodeled kitchen, washer/dryer, and a flat screen TV for viewing DVD/VCRs (we do not currently have broadcast TV due to poor sattelite signal).
The public boat landing is nearby, within 5 minutes by car or a short 15 minute walk. A canoe is included along with paddles and personal floatation devices.

We had a wonderful time relaxing at this cozy cabin. It truly felt like a home away from home. It is in a wonderful location with a private dock (just steps away) and has a beautiful view of the lake. So peaceful to sit on the dock in the mornings! The cabin is equipped with everything you could need and it was nice that they even provided a canoe that you could take out anytime to enjoy other areas of the lake. The huge windows in the cabin were awesome and made it so that you could enjoy the outdoors even while indoors. Their house-keeping staff that we met when we needed help, were very responsive, kind and hospitable, and made us feel like family. Thank you so much for your sweet kindness! It was such a pleasure to meet you! We definitely look forward to coming back to this cabin again in the future! We miss it already!! Thank you again for a wonderful stay!!

We loved this lake house very much, and will be back - and I wish I could leave 5 stars - but it was not the vacation that we expected based on the description. The dock is privately owned, but it is a shared dock with the house right next door (not pictured, but close). They share the access / path to the dock and the dock. So our family of 6 + a dog, shared the dock and swimming with 4 adults, 3 kids, and 4 other dogs - who are the owners of the house next door, and who spend time there and are renovating. We all made friends and they are a very kind family - however it was not what the listing described. The owner contacted me by phone and promised to update the description, which I very much appreciate. All that said, this is a special, special place. Just come ready to share space. Our kids are eager to return.

LaRue's cabin is just what we wanted for our lakefront stay. The lower level provides easy lake access and a nice clay tile floor, which is just what we and our wet dogs needed. The well-stocked kitchen was especially appreciated. LaRue is a very helpful host. Unfortunately, we had to cut our stay short, but we are looking forward to returning soon!

Wonderful stay! Great dock for swimming and has a nice canoe. Kitchen has everything you need. It's a well loved and cared for family cabin. Clean. You may say dated, I say Classic. Cooking dinner with the family while dancing to 70's dance party CDs 1 AND 2!! That's Classic. Owner is great with good communication. Wifi worked for us and it has a land line. Do yourself a favor and put your cell phone away, you're at the lake now! Will definitely return!!

My family and 2 dogs stayed here, and it was simply heaven. We spent all days on the water, as it was just a walk away from the dock. The fishing was incredible, and we did not want to leave! We will definitely return!

This family-friendly property was a great affordable option for our family of 4 that could easily fit 3-4 more guests. The remote location might mean low cell reception, but also offers amazing views from large windows on both floors.

Sweet property owner and nice getaway off the grid. Colors were Amazing mid October. Nice restaurant close by. Wi-Fi DID work at time of our visit which is good bc no cell service. Nice gas grill. Lots of condiments on hand but much of the food stock was expired. TVs did not work & no remotes had batteries. Hole in canoe. Water was down, a lot, so no dock. One of two fireplaces was supposed to work but it wasn’t clean and the smoke fed back into room and I could not get proper exit draft. Property was somewhat unclean including 6” of seasonal leaves around house. . Furniture and decor is outdated I was a little disappointed due to the difference in advertisement than reality. We were really looking forward to using a kayak or canoe which didn’t happen. The house and property reminded me of an older fish camp from the 70s. Andrews is nearby and has a smalll movie theatre, coffee, ice cream shop, Grocery store. I wouldn’t let my review keep you from coming if you want to escape and detach from reality for a bit.

The house was perfect for our group. The kitchen had EVERYTHING and was so organized. The big windows of the lake were breathtaking. The staircase to the dock was beautiful and the dock and the lake were so much fun for swimming and playing in the lake. The house itself feels like a true homeplace and I can only imagine the memories that have been made. We felt so lucky to detach from screens and unwind. Thank you!

We all loved our stay. We had 4 “kids” in their 20’s plus my hubby and dogs. My daughter said it was like being in the movie cheaper by the dozen. The lake is beautiful, and the house was extremely well equipped. It is definitely no frills, like staying in your grandma’s lake house, but that is the charm. One suggestion is to pre print all the maps you will need to get to hikes, recreation, and your trip home. Not having google maps was the hardest part of unplugging for me!

Summer getaway
My family and I booked a short 4 night stay to escape the Florida heat and enjoy a change of scenery. We absolutely fell in love with the area. The lake is simply beautiful and crystal clear in the shallows. The dock is big enough to enjoy just sitting out there and taking in the beautiful scenery and fish or swim from. The lake house is as described it was spacious, well equipped and very comfortable for our group of 4 people and 2 small senior dogs. The house is not fancy as it states but you can tell it has been well cared for and offers all one would need to enjoy a mountain/lake escape. The sitting room downstairs is cozy, great for after dinner conversations and the large picture windows are beautiful to just sit and gaze out. There is no wifi or cell service but we came prepared for that. We brought some board games and DVDs from home as well as books etc. There is a selection at the lake house as well but we brought stuff just in case. We played board games upstairs in the evenings and our17 year old son survived 4 nights and 5 days without cell/wifi and didn't even complain. We booked a fly fishing trip for the boys one day which they loved. We rented a pontoon one day from Bev (the caretaker) who was absolutely amazing and such a tremendous help. We toured the lake and just took in all the natural beauty from the pontoon. We also rented a ski boat for half a day and had a blast tubing on the lake. We enjoyed meals at the lakes end Cafe and ventured into Andrew's to try 2 local breweries and the Tattered Tartan offered great authentic Irish Pub food and a great selection of beers too we went there twice during our stay and probably would have gone even more if we stayed longer. It was such a peaceful, relaxing vacation and we can't wait to come back again soon. We would have booked a longer trip but there wasn't availability. I think this place is a real gem. We wanted to explore more of the area and try to fish a bit more so.our next trip we'll definitely try to stay longer. Thank you for sharing your family lake house with us. We had an amazing time and made some lasting memories. We hope to return very soon and plan to make this an annual trip. We loved the whole experience and we LOVE Lake Nantahala a true nature lovers paradise.

Great family place
Our family of four stayed at this lovely cabin and had a wonderful trip. We went to spend time together as a family, as we don’t see each other as often anymore, and we had a great time on the peaceful lake or looking out at the view. Though wifi would have been nice, we all agreed that we didn’t really miss having Wi-Fi or television while we stayed there. Everything we needed was found at the house, there were plenty of games, VHS tapes and DVDs, kitchen utensils, bathroom appliances, etc. If you plan to watch a lot of movies, you may want to bring some DVDs of your own, but we only watched a movie one night because we spent most of our time outdoor. The lake view is so beautiful and calming, there’s no better place to relax and spend time with family. We would go back again!

Great place
Beautiful lake, our family very much enjoyed our stay. The place was easy to find, it was exactly as described. It was a bit like stepping back in time, no internet or cell connection or TV was not a problem for a long weekend. Kids loved fishing and jumping off the dock. It was very easy to rent a boat and kayaks from the marina that was 5 minutes away. Will definitely be back.

Exceeded expectations
I booked late and I'm afraid this property was all that was left. It looked nice enough, but I was used to renting some of the fancier houses on the lake. I shouldn't have been concerned.
What this rental lacks in luxury, it makes up for in just about every other way. It is clean, comfortable, and remarkably charming. The owners and caretakers are fantastic. There a thoughtful touches everywhere, including a storage room full of chairs, noodles, floats, paddles, life vests, and more. The kitchen is extremely well stocked with dishware, pots and pans, condiments and spices. The location is one of the easier to get to on the lake since it's only a short distance off of Wayah. It's a short stairway down to the dock, which is in excellent condition. We enjoyed the canoe and rented a pontoon boat for the week. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We had a wonderful stay. Thank you!

Family vacation
Beautiful lake views and plenty of space for 6 or more people. Property is right on the water. You can’t get this close for the price. Most properties on the water are 2-3 times the price. The house is not fancy, as stated in the description. If you need cell service or WiFi you will not have any luck. No cable TV but a nice selection of VHS movies. The kids enjoyed the old Warner Brother cartoons. It’s a nice place to unwind and break away from the internet.
The drive down to the property is a bit difficult. There are some sharp turns and the driveway is tight. If you bring bring your boat, kayaks etc, you will notice the trailers are kept at the entrance to the neighborhood. It will be very difficult to navigate a trailer to the home. You can also rent very nice pontoon boat at Lakes End Marina. It was $40.00 per hour for a half day. The lake is huge. Kids jumped in, it was a bit cold, but we had a week of clouds and rain. On a hot sunny day, it would be perfect. The water is so clear.
We never caught any fish. Fishing in this lake is a bit tricky, confirmed by even the locals. It’s More of a pleasure lake, less of a fishing lake. There are several areas nearby to fish for trout in the rivers.
The neighbors are very nice and accommodating. They can tell you anything you need to know about the area. Keep in mind They are the first building. The rental is the back building. The driveway is shared. They move all of their vehicles to another area so you can have the entire space. They moved their pontoon boat so the kids could swim from the dock.
Overall, our stay was wonderful. The lake is absolutely breathtaking and peaceful. I would love to have a place on this lake. The owners are blessed to have this family home to enjoy and rent to others.

We liked this house so much when we stayed two years ago that we jumped at the chance to stay again. Awe inspiring beauty as well as relaxing.
We visited the area in 2017 with friends, and decided to rent a house on Nantahala Lake the next summer. We couldn't have made a better decision than this lake and this house. A warning, if you need good cell service and wifi, this is not your vacation home. If you're like me, and just want to swim in a pristine lake, sit on the dock and read, or watch old movies, then here's your place.
Speaking of the house, I absolutely adore this jewel. It's a trip back to the 60s and 70s, but with an updated kitchen. I hope the owner never changes anything, not the lamps, not the furniture, not the board games, not anything. I felt so at home here.
Speaking of the owner, she couldn't have been more nicer, and her son and his family couldn't have been more gracious having taken us with them on the pontoon boat to the marina for supper.
Saving the best for last, the lake and the surrounding mountains. If you'd like to visit the pacific northwest, but don't have the time, here's your place. It rained nearly every late afternoon or evening, while being sunny the rest of the day. The temperatures in mid July never rose above 82F. It was chilly enough at night for a sweater. The lake itself is the cleanest in NC, and one of the cleanest to be found anywhere. And the view is nothing but mountains. I never take pictures until this trip, it's that beautiful.
I look forward to returning, and will keep "my lake house" in my memories forever. Thank you so much!

Most relaxing vacation EVER
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful home with my family. We had the best time relaxing and swimming right off the dock! The scenery was absolutely breathtaking that we never wanted to leave. The neighbors Bev and Chris were so nice and helpful when we had questions. We rented the boat 2 days and enjoyed the lake and all the fun it had to offer. The lake was so clear and clean that we spent lots of time swimming and playing in the water. The house was exactly as I expected, the perfect summer lake house. There was plenty of room for my family of 5 and our 2 dogs that we could spread out. The kids loved running around the house looking for little baby toads everyday. I wish we would have brought our fishing poles to fish right off the dock. We can't wait to come back and visit again next year!

Beautiful location, clean, relaxing!!
We enjoyed our stay very much. The place was very clean and had everything we needed. Very family friendly and our kids had a blast. There is no reception or internet which makes for true relaxing getaway and quality time with family. Lovely quaint home that felt like many fun memories have been had. We did for sure.

It was perfect.
We really enjoyed our stay. The view from the dock (morning sunrises!), time on the lake, games and daily outings. We enjoyed the lake house as well. It isn't fancy but its homey and clean and actually reminded us of people we love (grand parents). No wifi was fine with us! Step back in time, forcing us to unwind. The kids had a blast too.

Clean, cozy, and quiet on a beautiful peaceful lake
I found everything impeccably clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well furnished and I felt as if I was welcomed into a family member’s home. The house is quiet and comfortable, and the lake was even better. If for some reason you can’t find something you need, the folks next door will go out of your way to be helpful and neighborly to help you

Tranquil lake house
My wife and I and our two dogs had a great three night stay at your place. It is a well-appointed, no frills lake house that is right on the water. Even with excessive rain due to the remnants of Harvey, we waited for stalls to paddle, fish, swim, and hike nearby Nantahala/AT trails. A true getaway!

A great place to stay with nature
This is a wonderful cabin in the woods near a beautiful lake. The house is in great condition with an amazing fireplace, grill, and a dock, everything you need for a great time outdoors. It's a wonderful getaway from the modern world. It also has very poor cell reception there which is unfortunate but if that's what you're looking for then it's great. The owners are also wonderful people and very understanding.
