About this lodge
A secluded, private, ranch retreat ideal for family vacations, celebrations, holidays, reunions, retreats, weddings and group events.
Need to Relax? You've picked the right place. Nestled in the deeply carved valleys of the driftless region, Big Valley Ranch offers a quiet and extraordinary lodging experience where you can horseback ride, hike, and bike right outside your door. Wildlife abounds with birds, squirrels, deer, turkey, and you might even see the elusive red fox, or a Big Buck just yards from the ranch. The grounds are both breathtaking and beautiful, with plenty of room for outdoor games and gatherings. With over 75 miles of trails, natural streams, a covered picnic pavilion, 70 outdoor horse paddocks, a sand volleyball court and an impressive lighted outdoor arena, the possibilities are endless.
Once a buffalo ranch, the 1000 acres is now home to an exclusive western retreat and vacationer’s paradise. The original rustic barn was restored into an elegant bed and breakfast using the original foundation, beams and barn boards. With 4200 square feet of country luxury, the barn house features 4 western themed bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, a majestic Great Room with a beautiful stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings, leather sofas, and hardwood floors. The fully-equipped kitchen has granite counter tops, bar seating, stainless steel appliances, and a large dining table. The Great Room leads outside to a private, full-length deck facing a horse pasture where you can enjoy grilling out. Want to entertain a large party? Check out The Woods in Lone Rock or Whiskey Row in Avoca! Although not a facility serving spirits, it houses saddle stools and a bar to enjoy your own beverages. There you can play a game of pool, darts, foosball, cards or dance to the jukebox. Located below the barn house living quarters is the stable with 8 premium stalls, tack room and wash rack. Nearby is the milk house (shower house) which houses a large walk-in shower and bath.
Big Valley Ranch is meant to be versatile. Let us know what kind of experience you are looking for and we will do our best to accommodate. Our piece of paradise is meant for anyone that wants to escape from the stressful, hectic lifestyle we often find ourselves in.

The Big Valley Barn house was big enough for our family of 12, we all slept comfortably and had enough room for fun and for quiet. We also appreciated the extra refrigerators in the game room. The house was beautifully clean and very organized with anything we could have needed. Great stay!

Initially, the large place felt almost intimidating with all its roominess, but we learned quickly to spread out and take full advantage of the space out there. We had a grand time at the ranch, including a long hike across the private valley which took several hours. And even if the trails were at times a bit soggy after a wet week.... if you want to be a real cowboy you'll love it. Thanks for the hospitality!

We liked the house so much! It was clean and nice and the outdoor is so beautiful! The 4 stars is because we couldn't find the keys to open the house and we couldn't contact the host. No one answered. We read that manager Lisa might call us before the week of our arrival to confirm some datails about the time we will arive but no one called us. So we stayed 2 hours outside until we finally found the keys because no one told us where to find it. Despite the problems we had a good time in this house!

We had a group of 6 men who went to college together. Everyone enjoyed the Barn House. Well kept up property on a ranch. Went for some nice hikes on the property and enjoyed watching the sheep out the window. Plenty of space.

The hang-out space was large and roomy for everyone. The bedrooms are nice and the place was plenty stocked with linens, extra blankets, and towels. Check-out was easy.

All around a great experience. I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back. I don’t know if the hot tub was off limits to renters or just not working but it would’ve been nice.

The space is perfect for a 6 couple weekend away. We didn’t even need to leave! The pictures don’t do it justice as it’s huge! And the game room/bar was connected to the main living space which we didn’t realize from the pictures. Super clean as well! We will definitely be back.

Great winter weekend getaway.

We loved our weekend at the ranch! The house is so much bigger than expected with plenty of room to spread out. We had three families with plenty of space and each getting their own bathroom. The only reason it’s a four star and not five were in the minor details- oven wasn’t working (they had a toaster oven but to feed 12 that was slightly challenging), cheapest tp and paper towels you could buy, and a few kitchen items we needed and couldn’t find. That being said, we will definitely be back - we can’t wait to see what it looks like in the warm weather and explore the land!

Really spectacular views. Comfy and cozy. It was a cold weekend but the house was toasty warm. Plenty of things to do inside and out. Snowshoed on the trails.

This was a perfect home for our family of 7 adults and 2 grandchildren to rent, so incredibly spacious! Every amenity provided needed to have a very comfortable stay. Everyone especially enjoyed their time in Miss Kitty's Saloon, something for everyone. We also took advantage of the games on the game cubbie. From inside and out the house, deck, and grounds were impeccable. My husband and daughter enjoyed biking on the trails. At night the grandchildren loved looking out the big picture window to spot a deer or raccoon. They also enjoyed visiting the sheep!😊 Thank you for a most memorable vacation.

We did an 11 man golf trip and rented the Barn House and the bunk house at Big Valley Ranch. All i can say is WOW. This property, specifically the barn house, is truly amazing. It's a perfect getaway spot for a group for 6-14. It has just about every amenity you can ask for. I'd definitely recommend renting this house.
