VRBO should not allow this property to be rented on their platform nor should it be marketed for families with kids and/or pets. The owner claims the previous month’s weather prevented outside maintenance. The issues with the patio and the walkway on the side of the house are clearly more than a month old - hazardous broken/uneven slate patio, exposed nails on walkways and on piles of old wood that have clearly been there for years, walkway lights falling off the deck, exposed cords to trip on, non-code compliant steps and landings - The outside has been neglected for years and it is impossible to avoid since it is the path to the beach.
A dated but charming beach house is what we hoped for on the inside but it is not much better with black mold coming out of the ceiling air vents throughout the house. While we were there it rained and 2 of the 5 bedroom ceilings leaked, significantly. The owner claimed it was odd because it wasn’t raining that hard at the time. It’s clear to see that the ceilings just keep getting repatched, but the root of the issue is not being addressed.
I requested the owner come to the property or send a representative so I could show my concerns but they did not. The owner prorated a refund of 2 days when we left the property on Thursday because of the leaks.
VRBO needs to do quality control on what is being offered on their platform. My recommendation is to do your research before making a decision to stay at this or any of the owners properties

The property is located right on the beach and dolphins swam by each day. However, the property needs attention. We had 2 ceilings with leaks (known because trash cans were placed underneath when we arrived), lots of ants inside & out, light switches had to be wiped down, bed skirts were torn, etc. It could be a great

The location was perfect-close to the boardwalk but with a relatively private beach. The house itself needs significant renovation and maintenance. The gate going to the beach fell off the cement wall. The middle bedroom on the second floor had a serious leak which puddled on the floor. Drawers and stair handrails were loose and the deck railing was loose as well. The stove was difficult to light. The tiles in the master bathroom were coming up. The walkway to the beach was wavy and splintered. There were many ants in the kitchen and roaches too. There was a heavy mold smell on the first floor.

Amazing property and such a great host. Excellent communication. I have stayed multiple years and have had a consistently high experience!!

This property isn't perfect and has some cosmetic flaws but overal it is a lovely house with an AMAZING view and access to the beach. The beach had a lifeguard right out front. There is no crowd and a ton of surfers to watch in the area. The house was clean. No sheets or linens are provided so be sure to arrange that ahead of time or bring them. Croatan is really family-oriented so you need to drive to any bars or restaurants, but that's what we were looking for. Overall amazing stay in a lovely home. We'd stay again for sure.

I will start with the good points about this house. It is in a convenient location, has a great view of the ocean, and the A/C, Wi-Fi and appliances worked. Cleanliness - it was terrible: cobwebs hanging from the ceiling; mold growing on a glass top table; the entire ground floor level smelled like mold and mildew; we had to wipe down all the stair handrails as they were sticky and dirty; the 2 grills were rusted, greasy, disgusting and unusable. Equipment - furniture was damaged with tape repairs; glass top dining table was not attached to the base; kitchen glasses were chipped and dangerous to use; outdoor toys were broken and rusty; Teflon coating on pots and pans was gone; other kitchen equipment was cheap and old; the ceiling fan in the entryway is rusted and makes terrible noises when you turn it on. Safety - the walkway to the beach is overgrown and had warped boards with rusty nails sticking out; broken and damaged pavers on the back patio; holes in the walls and ceilings in multiple locations; stair hand rail repaired with duct tape; toilet paper holder missing; garage almost filled with old carpets, broken furniture and unusable equipment. This house is especially dangerous for children. We have pictures to back this all up.

We visited for a girls’ trip (me, my 80 year old mom, and 28 year old daughter) and had a wonderful time! My mom loved the elevator and enjoyed watching the ocean from the deck on the third floor. The house is beautiful, clean, and has great views of the ocean! It is only a short walk to the beach using the home’s personal walkway. The beach is very private since it is disconnected from the boardwalk. We also loved that we were able to bring our pets! Lori is a great and communicative host. We had the best time and would definitely come again!

The place is dated but worked for our needs. Elevator was a plus, the incline on the stairs is daunting! Kitchen was well stocked and spacious. A few of the mattresses were could use updating or at least a mattress topper for comfort. All in all it’s a rental property on the beach, coffee in the morning watching the dolphins is worth it

Ocean front homes are the best for great views! The owner was communicative and we enjoyed our stay.

If you want beach front property on Virginia Beach very close to stores, golf courses, and restaurants, Lori's place is for you. She is very accommodating and answers back very fast.

AMAZING LOCATION! The elevator was particularly helpful with this home's four floors, as four of the five of us had various levels of mobility. The interior is dated, but functional. Queen-sized beds were advertised, but were really only full-sized. The king-size bed on the fourth floor was great. The 5 1/2 baths were modern and a plus during our stay; although, one of the second floor bathrooms did have an unsecured shower curtain. Conveniently, there were TV's in each bedroom; but one of the second floor rooms had a non-working television. The ice maker and dishwasher did not work; so, prepare to buy ice and wash dishes by hand. The kitchen was generously stocked with dishes, silverware, glassware, coffee makers, seating, and a FANTASTIC VIEW! The third floor deck was a high point with the wonderful ocean and moon and dolphin run views. The easy beach access and good shelling just feet from the cottage made our stay very fun.

Property is a little older but the location can not be beat. Right on the beach. Great weather. Family had a fantastic time.

Well, first let me say - Lori is very responsive to your communications and needs during your stay - so do not hesitate to contact her if you need something managed.
I will say that when I read the reviews last year, before renting this house and the one next door I didn't see all the reviews I'm seeing this year which seem quite neg. After staying there and reviewing recent reviews I will say the following.
We had a large group 21 pp that shared two houses - we were 3 churches pooling our resources to make a local counseling conference more affordable for more pp to come. We succeeded in staying at these rentals - we could make our food on sight - the kitchen had all the utensils and bowls, and pans we needed - I don't always find that in houses we rent - it had both a perk pot and a keurig allowing for the various coffee/tea drinkers to do what they needed.
these homes are aging and are used by weekly renters so things begin to happen, I do believe the owner knows about them and addressing them - further these houses are for sale. what I noticed I mentioned to the owner - for instance the cleaning service she uses didn't clean something I mentioned it and she said she would get right on it with them. I'm pretty confident the issue was resolved for the next renter - so when I say she's responsive just message her.
your on the beach - house is clean - organized and we had our own school of dolphins all week - amazing.

Our stay was just like the title...a relaxed beach stay. We had everything we could need at the house and the owner was quick to check in on us apon arrival and made herself available for anything we might need. Folks who complain about every fit and finish are not enjoying thier vacation like they should. We will definitely be looking at this property again, if still available, the next time w e head to the beach. It was a true pleasure.

Open house layout of kitchen very accommodating for cooking and socializing.
Some deferred maintenance issues, (windows not opening, siding, fence in walkway, worn sinks and bath) but did not stop us from having tons of fun. Great master bedroom and shower. We hope to return!

You can't beat the location.
Private access to the beach.
The elevator is such a plus.
Good renter communication.
Good layout and plenty of space.
Beautiful neighborhood.
The house is in need of updating and is in some places tattered but it did not interfere with our enjoying our vacation.

This house is very conveniently located on a quiet section of Croatan Beach. The new deck and walkway to the beach were very nice. We had several rather big issues with the house that the owner handled quickly and with good humor.
The house needs some work to bring it back to its glory days. The basement area where the pool table and laundry are located was quite musty smelling. It is obvious the owner is working on different issues but like all houses it is never ending.
The elevator was great for bringing luggage and groceries in. The lifeguard is right in front of the house. The stores for groceries are under 10 minutes away.

It was rainy weather.. cooped up in the house made us see it needs work, and the cleanliness was not up to par… I told the owner she needs to review the cleaners of this house.. made her aware of the problems.. hopefully gets fixed.

My daughter. Was getting married so I booked this property well in advance. Great location on the beach! We enjoyed our stay!

The location of this property is amazing, close to so many attractions and things to do. The house is huge and accommodates for large group to spend quality time together while giving everyone privacy as well. Very fun beach house, kitchen living room and porch give great view of ocean and beach ! Perfect! We will be back

Great house right on the beach with plenty of room including a central space for cooking and hanging out. Great brand new deck and walkway/steps right to the beach. The host, Lori, was very responsive and helpful when needed. Some things are a little dated, but hey, it's a beach house and a great time was had by all.

Nice home, older, but fine. Sauna was great. Right on a lovely beach. Make sure you put South Atlantic and not Atlantic on Waze.

Annual race weekend at the beach. Awesome location, view from porch and walkway to the beach were amazing. Both have been replaced and are in great condition. Plenty of size to accommodate 3 families with children. As mentioned in reviews the interior is outdated, but did not damper our stay.
6.0
Did the heat, water, and electricity work? Sure, but this place is on the market to be sold and is clearly not a place the owners care about any longer (it's a teardown for the next buyer). The siding is literally flying off the building. The metal railings on the floating stairs are being held together with packing tape. Of the two sinks in the master bathroom, one has a broken drain.
I only read the fine print in the contract after the fact...there are no towels or sheets at this property. But at the rate they charge - not to mention the crazy high cleaning fee - you would assume it would have them. But even with those missing, I assumed we would have the basics like hand towels? Soap in the bathrooms? Pepper? Nope.
It really felt like we were in an abandoned building. It has an elevator, but it's busted. It has a pool table, but it is only accessible through a garage with so much stuff packed into it that it freaked out my kids. The hot tub in the pictures is long gone. The windows don't shut all the way...I could go on but take my word for it - you'll find a better place.

The view is spectacular! Better than the photos. Lori was an excellent host!
Plenty of seating for all 6 of us. Bedrooms had nice beds and all had ensuites! Kitchen well equipped.
Right on the beach for wonderful walks.

Property has a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Owner provided a detailed book of information very helpful since we are not familiar with the area. In preparing for my daughters wedding. Great that everyone had their own bathroom.

First, let me say that Lori is a stellar host who responds quickly, and gracious for even silly questions and requests. Our stay was pleasant, as we only wanted to chill at the beach. Relax, no fanfare. That was achieved.
Now...for the property: You know that hot 80's or 90s band you wish you'd seen in the 80s? Then, come 2022 they go back on tour but not in their 20's anymore? More like in their 60s?
Let me try and paint this hot band in their 60's analogy for you. Think of it this way:
Beach location is outstanding, like those top 20 hits you wanted to hear live in concert in your formidable years.
Well designed and laid out (for 20 somethings who want to go up and down 4 flights of stairs. Feels a bit off-key playing lead guitar at 60.)
Per other reviews, repairs have been made to things like the back deck, but not replacements. There are soft spots that make you a bit nervous. Think of those 80s black leather pants that don't fit any longer since you gained 20lbs but you still feel they're stylish until you rip them if you try playing a 2 hour set.
Bring your own sheets and towels. This was a first in all the homes we've rented. Felt like using a lighter for the encore rather than flashing my smartphone. Or like a few of the original members are no longer with the band and you can tell when you hear them.
It's still a good band. Just wish I'd seen them several years ago in their prime.

Property is okay but needs some work done here and there. But we would stay again.

The house, although admittedly needs some work, was amazing nonetheless. Can watch the dolphins play most days from the kitchen window while peeling onions for dinner. Quiet neighborhood. Lori was great to deal with. Plan to return.

Lori was an excellent communicator. We loved our stay. The house was clean and comfortable. We didn’t mind the retro look of the house :-). Was absolutely perfect for my family. We vacation in the area every year and this has been our favorite home. Ages ranged from 3-almost 80 and it was wonderful for all of us. Elevator was a big bonus that helped with luggage and laundry. As expected for a home on the beach, the deck and steps were a bit weathered, just wore our sandals and it was no problem. Hoping to stay next year!

Great owner!
The place was really big. As other posts state it needs a little TLC. The walk to the beach was awesome.

Like Having a Private Beach
The house has direct access to the beach. There are Virginia Beach lifeguards stationed within a few yards of the deck-way that leads to the beach. Although it is a public beach, it almost seemed as if it was our own private beach. We were able to surf fish from the beach front during off-peak hours. and caught a couple of nice Redfish to boot.
The house is very spacious and was sufficiently furnished. Our fairly large group never felt crowded or lacked for privacy.
The house is in a great neighborhood and is conveniently located near attractions, restaurants and just about anything one might need to make your stay enjoyable.
The owner Lori was great to work with. She lives nearby and was attentive to our needs and concerns, before, during and even after our stay.
We all had a great time.
On the downside, as has been mentioned in other reviews, the house needs some routine maintenance and renovations. Some of the comments about the decking: stairs, rails and walkways, don't really begun to scratch the surface of their actual condition. They are in serious need of replacement and currently present a safety hazard. Many of the boards and railings are old, rotted, weak and incapable of supporting weight, unless you walk or step gingerly. The steps leading to the beach are of new construction. It would be nice if the remainder of the decking was replaced as well. The deck is an accident waiting to happen.

Never again!
The property is less than fit. The walkway to the beach is falling apart. Make sure you were shoes. It also is over growing with vegetation. The patio door was broken. The kitchen drawer fell apart and the kitchen sink handle falls off. The provided beach umbrellas are unusable as the bottom pipes are broken and we’re laying all over the place. The provided beach chairs are very rusting and we were afraid to use them. The outdoor shower had several unwanted items of other renter laying around. The fenced in yard is not completely fenced in as the main garden entry door was laying in the flower bed across the driveway. The AC is ridiculous. If you turn the 4th story bedroom thermostat is turned down and the door closed the 3rd floor starts to overheat. The bedroom closest to the beach on the 2nd floor does not cool down. The gas grill was left nasty so we could not use it. The pool table is in a dark musty room on the first floor.
On the bright side, we watched the dolphins play in the surf most mornings. The furniture was comfortable and kitchen fairly well stocked.
I will not come back to this property.
