About this house rental
The Johnson Homestead is located on the south end of Bailey Island looking out at the entrance to Mackerel Cove. With one level access to 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths, front and back yards, this is the perfect place to unwind with easy accessibility. Sleeping 6-8(MAX), the house will be a comfortable fit for anyone wanting an ocean view from the living room couch or a chair in the front yard. Sit and watch the daily sunsets coloring the sky, they don't disappoint. Many days you will see Mt Washington on the horizon in the west as the sun sets, bringing the ocean view to a mountain view.
A short walk through the back yard will bring you to a semi private beach in tranquil Little Harbor. At the beach you may enjoy peaceful moments watching the sunrise, swimming, floating, kayaking, or exploring the ocean floor's tide pools. The high and low tides makes a walk to the beach a different adventure every day, that's part of Maine life!
The Johnson Homestead has central heat and AC. The bedrooms have: 1 Bedroom with King Bed, 2 bedrooms with Queen Beds, 1 bedroom with 2 Twins, Linens provided. There are two full bathrooms, one with walk in shower and one with a tub/shower, towels provided. The fully stocked kitchen has a eat in dining table with 6 chairs. There is a full sized washer and dryer. A gas grill for cooking out is provided. If you're hungry for local flavor in a Do-it-Yourself fashion pick up some "fresh off the boat" lobsters, cook them up yourself and eat them at the backyard picnic table. Delicious!
There is a sun porch on the eastern, backside of the home. Enjoy eating meals, reading a book, playing games, or just watch the children play in the back yard.
There is an automatic generator provided at the home.
We recommend exploring local gift shops, restaurants, and ice cream stands right here in Harpswell. Excellent location and nice property.

This property is in an excellent location and was wonderful for a family. We appreciated one floor living.

It is definitely an older home, but was comfortable and was very homey. We were brought 4 live lobsters on our first night- only $35 total for the 4!! Wish our stay could have been longer. Thank you, David and Doreen!

The house is an older Maine homestead in a perfect location. it has plenty of space with comfortable beds and furniture. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pots and pans. We have stayed here before and it is our favorite local property.

Quaint, cozy, thoughtfully stocked, and nautically themed house by the sea. We enjoyed every minute wishing we had endless time to stay. For anyone unfamiliar with the neighborhood and surrounding communities I found the binder an excellent source for info.
We will be back

Very peaceful surroundings. Spectacular views. Older home, adequate for our needs. The Johnsons were very pleasant.

Our family had a lovely time here. There is water access in front of the house (across the road) and behind the house (across the yard and down a hill), and lovely views of the cove from the living room. Plenty of lawn to set up croquet and badminton, and a screened in back porch for meals. 4 minute walk to the beach at Lands End.
This is a family home and as such is not fancy but we found it very comfortable and perfect for a base for adventures as well as relaxing on a rainy morning.
Well supplied kitchen, towels, and a grill!

We love Bailey and staying at the Johnson - been coming for years and hope to for many, many, many more! Thank you for being such wonderful hosts.

We had a great stay with extended family. The house is much larger than it looks and the bedrooms are all a pretty good size. There were 7 of us and we had plenty of room. The only issue i had was it was a bit warm for me not having a/c, but we knew that when we booked. They do have many fans in the house and that helped a lot. This was our first time staying on Bailey Island and we loved it. The owner of the house lives next door and his sister lives on the other side and they, along with everyone else we met on the island, were so nice. The house is convenient to walk down to the lands end gift shop and we also walked to the giant stairs. Be prepared if you stay on the island, everything else is a bit of a trip. I didnt mind it one bit, but some people might find that difficult. But its a beautiful place to visit and I think we will be back.

Perfect location, great host. Great experience.

This nautical themed house has everything for a week long stay. Lots of baking, cookware, silverware, tableware and glasses. There are some spices, plastic wrap and paper towels. The house has plenty of book shelves filled with interesting reads. There is a covered and screened porch off the back that makes a great place for breakfast and morning coffee. Any family of multiple generations would feel comfortable here. Plenty of yard for children to play. Great location for access to hiking trails, easy marketing on the island and restaurants with fresh seafood. Our host provided fresh lobsters for an evening meal! The location is quiet with beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The road can be a bit busy during the day so if you walk it - be careful. The home has many touches of family and island history. My only note would be if you have mold allergies there is some mold in the bath and kitchen not uncommon for a waterside location.

This house on Bailey Island is a very restful spot: in a quiet neighborhood, great for long walks, wonderful sunsets and 4 places to eat close by. David Johnson, our host, was a wealth of knowledge, quick to meet our needs and patient with our questions about lobstering. We had a great week there.

Perfect location for exploring southern and mid coast Maine and inland areas.

Loved the location for the easy access and walking to the various points of interest. Especially liked the proximity of Lands End for many reasons. The scenery was wonderful!! All in all a great week!! Thank you!!

We've been staying for many, many years at Bailey, and always with the Johnsons. We always have everything we need, always get a warm welcome and always love our time there!

David, the owner, was available to answer any questions promptly. The four large bedrooms served our group very well. The highlight of the house is the great back yard with beautiful big trees giving shade during the day. The area is one of Maine's treasures.

Our family needed to get away from a very busy spring and relax for a week, and The Johnson cottage was just the answer. Beautiful sunrises on the screened in porch, Kayaking in the private cove, fishing at lands end, breathtaking sunsets and eating the best lobster in the world. Fantastic week.

We had the best time every at this dream home on the island. From the view to the friendliness of the owner and neighbors. And of course the lobster. Will definitely be back. Thanks for everything.

We had a wonderful stay in this cozy comfortable house!
The sunsets and sunrises were spectacular! Location is great! Loved dinners from Gurnet Trading.
We would love to come back again!

The house is located at the best spot on the island. The house is older but has everything you need and everything functions as it should. We got lobsters from the owner and will definitely return again in the future.

Nice views to the east & west. Just as described with easy check in/out. It was amazing to get super fresh lobsters delivered right to our door. The house was larger than we expected and worked well for 4 people. It’s a great base for exploring the area.

The location is amazing with sunrise and sunset views. A quick walk through the adjoining backyard gets you to a private beach area with the best sunrise views. Sunset over the bay is viewed directly across the street. Pull up a chair by the front door, relax, and watch the sun go down.
Just a quick walk brings you to the point beach end of the island with great views out over Casco Bay. From the couch in the living room you can watch lobster boats head in and out of the harbor all day.
The house has all that is needed for a comfortable stay. It reminds me of the summer home that I grew up in in NH. The neighbors are extremely friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our visit and hope to make it back soon.

We had a wonderful week at Bailey island. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Perfect spot for Gorgeous sunsets!

This home was much bigger than we thought and so close to the water! A great location for a remote vacation during the pandemic. It is a bit dated, but everything was in working order and having an on site washer and dryer was great! Exploring the beaches and trails and enjoying the fresh seafood were the highlights for our family. Absolutely recommend this home.

If you are looking for a real Maine experience, this just may be the spot for you. The house was clean, and well stocked. The sunsets were second to none. There is access to a semi private beach that is just a short walk from the property. The Johnson sisters and their husbands live next door and are a wealth of information. Order the lobsters from David, they are amazing! Although I never got a response from the property manager, everything was fine.
Make sure you say hello to Myrna and the kids! 😉

My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Johnson Homestead. The rich history of this family home is shown throughout the house. The sunrises from the private beach/cove and sunsets from the front lawn were the perfect way to start and end the day. The accommodations were as described and more than met our needs. The people on Baily Island were very polite, even stopped to say hello while we were drinking our morning coffee. Thank you David, Darla and Mary for being great hosts!

Great place for a family vacation. Nice backyard for kids to play or adults to enjoy. A path to the beach for swimming, sea glass searches and relaxing views. Lots of things to do and see. Schooner ride on the Alert, Westwind lobster tours, boating , seafood and Fabulous sunsets. The owner was quick to respond to any questions. We plan to return

We had a wonderful time at the homestead. The home is older, but very clean, comfortable and everything you need has been thought of. We felt right at home. It is in the perfect location. Everyone loved the access to the little harbor and had a great time in the water and on the beach playing. There was plenty of lawn space too for the kid to run around. The sunrises and sunsets were amazing. You are within easy walking distance of the Giants Stairs, Lands End and Mackeral Cove. We could not have asked for a better home base while on our visit to Maine. Many great memories were made!

We enjoyed our stay at the Johnson Homestead. We traveled in for a family wedding and loved the comfort of a home vs a hotel. The views are great, too. The house was super clean and had everything we needed. Yes,the house is a little dated but you don't miss anything. I was pleased with the location, price and communication with owner.
4.8
The house showed its age but was overall adequate. The location and views were great. The owner was helpful and easy to reach even waiting on us our first night there to get a generator going due to an island wide power outage.
4.8
We had a great experience renting the Johnson Homestead. Dave was a wonderful host and the house has everything one could need. There are very peaceful spots to sit and enjoy the sea just a very short walk from the door. There are wonderful hikes very close by. And while many restaurants were closed, Cook's was open and the food was terrific! We would definitely come back to Bailey Island!

Easy to deal with manager, great location.

House is in need of TLC, but the owner was great and the views can’t be beat. Some of the most spectacular sunsets from every room in the house. I’m sure sunrises were nice, but I slept too soundly and too late to see them.
