About this cabin rental
If you are looking for the 'cabin experience', Lazy Pines is your place!! This classic Minnesota cabin won't disappoint. This property was completely renovated in the fall of 2014 and is essentially brand new inside and out. Done in a true cabin feel, Lazy Pines has a wonderful open floor plan on the main level that features a combined great room/kitchen/living room with a large wood-burning fieldstone fireplace for those chilly nights (fire wood included of course!!). The main level features vaulted ceilings and a wonderful screen porch overlooking the lake with panoramic views of beautiful O'brien Lake. The main level further features a lakeside master bedroom and bathroom complete with tile shower. The lower level features an additional bedroom, a second designated bunk room, and an additional informal bunk area along with a second bathroom which also includes a custom tile shower. In addition, the lower level features a built-in game/puzzle table along with a leather sectional couch and entertainment area for a rainy day or movie night! The lower level also features tremendous lake views and all interior spaces (main and lower level) flow seamlessly to a large lakeside firepit area just steps from the water for those true Minnesotan's (again, firewood included)! The rental comes complete with a pontoon boat (2023 Bennington), and of course a hammock in the yard for those lazy days. For those that need to stay connected, the cabin also includes Wi-Fi and two high definition TV's with DirecTV (including a lower level area that has a blue ray DVD player and surround sound). And don't worry, you won't be roughing it, the 2014 renovation was done in good taste so along with the granite counter tops, the wood plank floors, and the reclaimed details it also brought all new mechanical systems including air conditioning, new appliances, and a Culligan softened water system.
Situated 5 miles east of the town of Crosslake, crystal clear Lake O'Brien is spring fed with a water clarity of 24', the cleanest lake in the entire watershed district. The lake itself is surrounded by mature pines. There is approximately 5 miles of shoreline, of which about a quarter of the lake is undeveloped state owned property. During the summer, this recreational lake is perfect for fishing, skiing, wake boarding canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and all water based activities, including floating on an air mattress!! There is a sandbar where you can walk across the lake which is a favorite gathering spot for 'kids of all ages'!! It's location on a quiet tar township road make it perfect for a morning walk or bike ride. During the winter months the lake is perfect for ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and is a perfect base camp to access the endless miles of groomed snowmobile trails.
Lazy Pines is perfect for a family, an extended family, or a couple families; we have a limit of 9 occupants. There are 2 Queen beds (1 per bedroom), 3 single beds (in the bunk areas) and a double bed (bottom bunk). We do keep our calendar updated and so if you are seeing availability then it's likely available. Upon reservation confirmation you'll receive a complete 'what to bring' list ahead of your stay so you are prepared for your time up north. Feel free to inquire with any questions you may have and we’ll be prompt to reply! We pride ourselves on keeping our property and structures/equipment pristine and are certain we'll exceed your expectations in that regard. And further, since we also live on this lake, should any questions or problems arise we can respond quickly. In fact, your only disappointment will be when you have to leave!!
NOTE: The pontoon is in the water, and use is included in the stated rental rates, from approximately early May - late September.

We had the perfect summer vacation with wonderful views of the lake, spacious screen porch, a new pontoon boat, and a great fire pit.
The cabin was charming and perfect for our family.
Our hosts were friendly and helpful. Lovely stay.

Loved our second stay at this wonderful property. After cabin hopping the last few years, we came back to this one because of its perfect setup for our smaller group this year. Love the screened-in porch with a birds-eye view of the lake. The beach is perfect for littles. I’m sure we’ll be back!

The lake was as clear as indicated, and taking the pontoon over to the sand bars was great for swimming with both my grandchildren and then with my siblings. The hostess was very accommodating. Listening to the loons each day was a welcome experience. The next time I need a place that big, I would definitely come back. The cabin was very welcoming!

We had a wonderful time with our family of 8 and loved being able to bring our pup. The house is very well represented in the pictures, well kept, well furnished and very comfortable. Especially appreciated the little things such as good bedding, towels and household supplies.
The highlight was the brand new pontoon boat. We made use of it every day, cruising the lake, stopping for a swim and even successfully fishing. We also found a small rental company on Facebook that delivered 4 kayaks (Adventure to go), Tad was wonderful to work with!!
There were a couple small issues that came up during our stay however Renae, the owner who lives next door, was very responsive. She went above and beyond when we realized, on our drive home, that we left a couple items at the cabin…thanks again!
The only concern we had was there wasn’t air conditioning on the lower level. The air conditioning on the main floor works very well. The fans provided for the downstairs bedrooms certainly helped but our very pregnant daughter and those sleeping in “the nook” area were warm at night.
Overall it was a perfect stay and we would highly recommend. Thank you!

The cabin is cute and very relaxing. Intimate cozy setting for whatever occasion. The property was well kept and having access to a boat was a huge plus for my family. Downstairs the bunk beds were a hit with my kiddos.

This cabin is exactly what we imagined from the description, but the experience was even better! We love the north woods and the cabin experience and this place was perfect - private and exactly what our family of 4 couples needed. Awesome wood fireplace and the pontoon was a huge perk!

This place was perfect for our Mother’s Day weekend. It is appealing from the moment you pull into the driveway. The cabin is nested in its natural surroundings as if it were always there. The large windows give spectacular views from all sides. The design and décor make you feel comfortable and relaxed. There is room to play games, ample supplies for preparing meals, and very comfortable beds. The screen porch was the place to watch and listen to the birds as the sun rose each morning. The dock and pontoon were the icing on the cake. We were able to catch fish from the dock and enjoyed exploring and fishing the lake on the pontoon. Lake O’Brien is spectacular! It has excellent water clarity with plenty of fish. We saw eagles, falcons, beavers, and an otter. This is certainly a must stay location. We hope to be back next year.

Loved our weekend trip at this cabin! The owners were easy to get ahold of and the check in/out process was super easy. The kitchen had a lot of appliances/supplies to use. Loved the indoor fireplace as well! Beds were cozy and the view of the lake was gorgeous. Would definitely go back!

This was my husband's first time in traveling to Minnesota, and the experience was amazing. Lazy Pines is a gorgeous cabin, and it had everything we needed/wanted for our 9 night stay. The cabin is beautifully decorated and was extremely comfortable. We took advantage of both living areas as well as the screened in porch (during the warm days). The bed we used was very comfortable and had a fabulous view of the lake and stars at night. We saw a great deal of wildlife at the cabin...deer, squirrels, ducks, chipmunks, and a couple of gray foxes (or coyotes).
We traveled with our dog, and this was the first vacation spot where she was truly comfortable almost immediately. Bonus!
We met Renae, one of the owners, and she was extremely gracious in talking to us about the property and was just as responsive to our texts. We told her that the pictures of Lazy Pines do not do the property justice...and they don't!
The downside to our trip was having to leave such a beautiful place. We always plan our trips out way in advance and hope to return to Lazy Pines next year. Thank you, Renae and Matt, for hosting us...and helping us create some fabulous memories.

We found the cabin serene, peaceful, and nicely designed. Found the showers to be especially attractive- we loved the pebble floors which echoed the design of the stone fireplace. Great place!

We were in need of a few quiet, peaceful days and our stay here delivered!
The cabin was clean, had everything we needed, was thoughtfully decorated to reflect the location, and the layout was perfect.
The cabin looked exactly as it does in the photos and check in and check out were simple and uneventful.
We would highly recommend staying here!

Our stay was a family getaway with our daughter's family. The check-in and out procedure was flawless. Matt and Renae were excellent hosts by responding to questions and inquiries immediately. The cabin exceeded our expectations. The cabin was large enough for 7 people, but still felt cozy. My wife and I stayed on the main level bedroom and bathroom, while my daughter's family had the lower to themselves. The cabin was well stocked by everything for you stay. The cabin had a full kitchen to prepare meals. Our stay started with a light snow making the area a winter wonderland. The temperatures were below zero outside, but the fireplace made it more special to sit around. Because of the cold, we didn't do much outside, but with the crackling of the fireplace, there was no reason. My son-in-law tried some ice fishing, caught nothing, but did mark some Northern. This was a great time for spending time with our grandchildren. There were many memories made that weekend. We would definitely stay again.

Everything was amazing. Cozy comfy cabin. It even snowed driving our stay which made everything even more Beautiful. Perfect for our little family. We’d love to return in the summer.

This property checks all the boxes. It was easy to find and there’s parking in close proximity to the house. Though there are beautiful homes nearby, it still feels secluded and private. The owner operators who live next door are easy going and wonderful. They decorated the home for Christmas which was great because we didn’t need to use the minimal decor we brought.
Beautiful setting on the lake. Wrap around windows provide plenty of natural light and views of the Northern Minnesota scenery.
The lounging spaces are well furnished and comfortable. The kitchen is appointed with anything you might need. You can tell a lot of thought and consideration went into the construction and the finishes are high quality and authentic.
Not much else to say. Will save in my favorites list for sure. Stay here and enjoy!

Beautiful property and a good mix of rustic cabin with all the comforts of a traditional home. We had a great time and will be coming back!
2.0
Good location
Initial impression good of outside
Inside seemed small and it had an odor
Main carpet thread bare, rugs were dirty
Lamp shades broken and dirty and missing finials
Master bedroom smoke detector gone, just wires showing
Downstairs smelled of urine
Carpet seems were separated downstairs
Sound bar on TV just came on by itself and frightened my wife, she stood outside in her robe waiting for me to back from walking our dog for half an hour.
Overall it seemed dingy and in earnest need of freshening.
We booked for 3 nights left after 2 because we were just to uncomfortable to stay any longer.
We didn’t know we had to load washer empty trash and strip the bed. This was our first VRBO and will be our last.
We did not get our monies worth.

We had a wonderful fall getaway, with our adult children. The cabin - look, layout, cleanliness, overall feel and amenities far exceeded our expectations. Better than the pictures!! The fully stocked kitchen allowed for the many homecooked meals we had and the woodburning fireplace added the perfect touch.
Matt and Renae were great to deal with - the care they give to their properties is evident inside and out!! We will definitely be back!

This VRBO is in the perfect location for a quite get away yet close to all the action. The cabin is in great condition and the amenities were great. Renae was there to answer all of our questions (There were few because everything was very well laid out for us). I would highly recommend this property.

Loved our stay at Lazy Pines. The cabin was just perfect for our Fall Preview getaway, and the pontoon boat was such a wonderful bonus. The setting, the cabin, everything about the place was exactly as depicted and in fact exceeded expectations. The Balmers were attentive and welcoming hosts. Truly do look forward to visiting again.

Nice cozy cabin. Great pontoon. Very quiet. Was great. A little trouble with Directv. But wasn’t there for TV

Better than the description. Worth the splurge.

We had a great time enjoying crystal clear and quiet Lake O'Brien on the pontoon, gathering around the fire pit at the end of each day for a bonfire, playing cards on the screened porch, and slept well in the comfortable beds. Matt and Renee are noted as premier sponsors for good reason. Well outfitted, air conditioning kept things comfortable and fans were abundant. Pictures are true to form, and you won't be disappointed. Grateful.

The property had some positives and negatives.
Positives: It had a nice private driveway with ample room to park. It had a nice screened-in porch. The area down by the water was nice with a sandy entrance to the water. They were pet friendly. Overall a quiet neighborhood/lake, so it is a relaxing location, close to Crosslake.
Negatives: There were a few challenges with our particular stay. The cabin was compact, especially the sleeping areas downstairs which wasn't clear from the photos. We had an unfortunate leak from the upstairs shower to the downstairs bedroom which the owner did address but short of a repair person coming in and out, we landed on not having use of the second shower, which for 8 people is unfortunate. The appliances are aging and the ignition on the grill does not work consistently. With lower water levels there were quite a few weeds in the water. A lot of lily pads near the property. The low water levels made it difficult to use the boat. Mosquitos were pretty aggressive after sundown. Some of that is mother nature but unfortunately does impact the experience.
Overall it was an okay stay.

It’s was such a treat and delight to spend a week on Lake O’Brien! The cabin is so thoughtfully decorated and designed; the screened in porch was perfect for morning coffee. The kitchen was fully equipped to make lovely meals. The many sleeping areas gave everyone their space to retreat. The location was fantastic- easy access to the cute towns and a grocery store less than 10 min away. We really home to come back again next summer. This place and the host are true gems!

The cabin is cozy and comfy. The highlight is the pontoon that’s included with this rental. 10/10. We really enjoyed cruising the lake with our toddlers. We were surprised that beach towels were not available for use. Just needs beach towels and complimentary coffee and this place would be 11/10.

Gorgeous house, set up was perfect and could bring our dog. Kitchen was perfect.
Bunk beds and second living room downstairs provided kids their own area.
Loved the screened in porch for cocktails and cribbage.
Nice roads to walk. Saw loons, swans and a beautiful fox. Great trip with the family!
