The Gettysburg Retreat is a Pre-Civil War 2 story Gable front house. Built in 1853 it was originally owned by William Steinhour. Steinhour owned the house until 1859, then sold to Henry and Mary Zeigler in 1860, then repurchased by William Steinhour in 1864. It was later bought in 1868 by William Z. Little and then sold in 1872 to James Caldwell. The house was later passed down to Little's heir in 1873.
One thing interesting about the house, is in the first 2 blocks of West Middle Street. You will find several Civil War houses towards downtown Gettysburg, but as you reach The Gettysburg Retreat, the house beside it was the last house in town until you get to Seminary Ridge during the Civil War.
The land Gettysburg was founded on was originally owned by William Penn. Penn would later sell the land to town founder James Getty. The Gettysburg Retreat was the 127th lot of land allocated to Getty in the exchange.

Staying at the Gettysburg Retreat was a perfect fit for our group, (four couples). The house has four bedrooms and two bathrooms and a great kitchen! There was plenty of space for everyone. Everyone's favorite spot was the big kitchen table where we gathered for meals and planning our activities. Our host was terrific and made our stay easy. She was easy to communicate with and responded quickly. With four couples, I had requested additional keys so each couple could come and go easily if they wanted to venture out on their own. The location of the house made walking to uptown attractions easy. There is even a grocery store next door to the house (which came in handy). The Gettysburg Retreat is a gem and would highly recommend it.

From the moment we booked our trip till the moment we left, everything was perfect! Sandee was an excellent host and provided us with all the information we needed. The property itself was perfect and very accessible to not only restaurants, the battle fields, and center square in town, but it is even right across the street from a grocery store. We throughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely book this spot again! Thanks Sandee & Pat.

After an afternoon of playing bluegrass music at the circle, we all met back to the house to cool down, have lunch and relax. This is a great house. Very comfortable with great A/C! Fully equipped kitchen. Just get food and drinks at Kennie's Market conveniently across the street.

The right place to stay when visiting Gettysburg.

We loved our stay while we were in Gettysburg. It was a 15 minute drive to Liberty Mountain Ski Resort and right next to a grocery store so we could grab the things we forgot. Sandee responded immediately to our problems and even came over to fix some small things to help make our stay more convenient. They are trying to install central AC/heat which will be nice as the upstairs gets very hot with the heater. Overall we loved our stay and hope to be back next year!

We enjoyed our stay at the Gettysburg Retreat House. The place was nicely decorated, clean and a great location. We were two blocks from the square, easy walking distance to shopping and dining. If you decide to eat in, there is Keenie's Market across the street. Our host, Sandee was very accommodating and there is everything that one would need at the Gettysburg Retreat House to enjoy a long weekend or an extended stay. I highly recommend the Gettysburg Retreat House and our wonderful host Sandee. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us.

We visited our favorite place to celebrate 2 milestone birthdays in our family. We rented the Gettysburg Retreat and so happy we did. The home is lovely and very accommodating. The decor is perfect! Close to restaurants and attractions. We were able to walk to most places! I'm sad to say that we did not see or hear any ghosts at the property.. we'll definitely stay again, when we return to Gettysburg. Thank you, Sandee!!

We had such a great time. We really enjoyed going through all of the old books and reading about all of the messages past guests wrote about. Sandee and Pat are terrific hosts. We met Sandee and she even took the time to tell us about the house and “guests” who love the house as much as we did. There is so much to explore and plenty of room for family to be together. We can’t wait to go back and stay at the Gettysburg Retreat!
