Dos Corazones is our most elegant rental. The custom construction and unique decor are simply exquisite. Photos do not do justice to this amazing home.
Beautifully custom-built adobe home designed in an elegant and classic southwestern style and nestled at the base of the Corazones Mountains. Relax and escape from daily stresses while enjoying the grandest splendor and comfort available in the Big Bend.
Dos Corazones was designed in the tradition of a grand Chihuahuan hacienda. High ceilings, rich wood work, stucco adobe walls, artful stone masonry, and elegant tile floors make every room exquisite and inviting. Many architectural items, including doors, hardware, and fixtures, were salvaged from historic buildings in Mexico, South Africa and Morocco and artfully incorporated into this wonderfully designed home. The interior décor proudly features an extensive collection of folk art, baskets, and textiles that the owners collected from their world travels.
This home is incredibly spacious. There is plenty of room for your entire group to spend time together or for each to claim their own private space. The great room features a comfortable leather sofa and chairs and is the perfect place to relax and tell stories while enjoying expansive mountain views. The den offers a touch of seclusion and is a great place to relax with a good book. The spacious dining room is ideal for sharing meals or playing games. Speaking of meals, the expansive kitchen is a great place to prepare a gourmet meal or a simple snack.
There are several fireplaces in the house. However, no fires are allowed. The chimneys have all been permanently capped. There are candle stands and candles for your use in each fireplace.
There are two large bedrooms. Each one has its own luxurious bathroom and private patio. The master suite has a king bed, a private bathroom with a large shower, and private patio with views of Sombrero Peak and the Rosillos Mountains. The second bedroom has a queen bed and a full bed, a private bathroom with a large shower. All mattresses are high quality memory foam purchased Sept 2017.
Of course, you didn’t drive all this way to stay inside. That’s why Dos Corazones has six different flagstone patios for your enjoyment. The central courtyard features a peaceful water fountain and lots of greenery. The front porch features a built-in grill and a small outdoor dining area. The two back porches offer expansive views and plenty of space to stretch out. The private porches attached to each bathroom provide a more intimate setting with privacy walls and lots of greenery.
The owner, Gillian Hennessy, lives in the nearby guest house. Feel free to introduce yourself and ask her questions about the home or area. Otherwise, she may wave and say hello, but will keep to herself and respect your privacy.
Want to see the stars at night? Well they are truly big and bright down here in the Big Bend Area. Our remoteness means there is virtually no light pollution to obscure the night sky. The Big Bend Region is recognized and celebrated for having the darkest night skies and best star gazing in the continental United States. Don’t forget to watch for the International Space Station and other orbiting satellites. They can often be spotted in the first hour or two after dusk or before dawn.
Venture into Big Bend National Park or Big Bend Ranch State Park. Visit the Terlingua Ghost Town. Check out the Christmas Mountains. Take a horseback ride or go on a river trip. Check out the local cuisine at the Terlingua Ranch Bad Rabbit Café, in Terlingua/Study Butte, the Terlingua Ghost town, or Lajitas. You won’t be disappointed. There is often live music at the famous La Kiva Bar and Grill, the Starlight Theatre, High Sierra Bar and Grill, or the Terlingua Ranch Bad Rabbit Café. There are so many things to see and do you won’t be able to see or do it all.
Stay as busy as you like or just relax and unwind. When you leave Dos Corazones you can be as rested and refreshed, or as exhausted and inspired, as you like. Don’t worry about fitting everything into one trip. We’ll be glad to welcome you back again and again.
The Neighborhood:
TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.
Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.
People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.
The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)

Expertly managed by Janet & Daryl, this property is just stunning.

The house is beyond words, an even the pictures don't do it justice. Beautiful inside and out. This is the perfect place to stay to see the wonders that southwest Texas has to offer. Communication with the property manager was also top notch.

This property has all you need and more! Beautifully decorated with a kitchen you will want to take home with you!!

What a gorgeous place to stay with such beautiful details! Our Big Bend adventure could not have been any better as we loved the park then going back to Dos Corazones! Daryl was also so gracious to take care of something we left behind!
Absolutely fabulous!

The property was beautiful. Gorgeous sunrises, sunsets and amazing starry nights. Be aware that the place uses rain water so you will be asked to conserve water as well as electricity. Be sure to bring flashlights because it is very dark outside and somewhat dark inside. The lighting in the house could be somewhat improved especially with the sunken family room. Also note that the fireplaces are not functional. The property is a ways from the park but unless you stay in the park, you won’t be much closer anywhere else. All in all, a very comfortable stay!

We had a great stay! Although the house is 10 miles down Terlingua Ranch Rd, the directions were spot on. The house is beautiful and the view spectacular. The property managers’ communications were excellent. Thank you!

We've stayed here before and we really like it. Beautiful views. Easy to get to. Lovely home.

We loved the house; it was beautiful and comfortable. The downside was that it took an hour and a half to 2 hrs to drive to the different parts of the park: Santa, Elena, chisos basin, Boquillas Canyon.

The location was great because it was quiet and beautiful., and getting there was not as hard as we had thought. The home was so comfortable and relaxing. So much room to have your own privacy. We loved our stay!

A dream vacation
I can't say enough good things about this house and the entire property! The house is lovely, full of interesting artwork, with views from every window and a kitchen that has everything you need. The landscape around makes you think you are in a fairy tale or a movie set, with beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The mountains around have a different color at different times of day. Enchanted!

Beautiful hacienda
This house is just beautiful. The baskets and other art pieces are breathtaking. The stillness of the area gives a great respite from city life. And the sunrises are worth every penny we paid. Thank you for a perfect stay.

Perfect seclusion
This property is a hidden gem. It is secluded which suited us quite well. It was adorned with multiple art pieces and artifacts from the owner’s time in Africa. The library was extensive. I almost felt like I was in the scene from Beauty and the Beast. I would definitely recommend a stay here

The house is beautifully decorated, has very comfortable beds and had a well stocked kitchen. The house is secluded so the night sky viewing is amazing.

Boys trip
Property was beautiful and spacious and so were the night skies. The only issue we had was the long drive to some of the hikes in the park but the beautiful views made it a non issue

Delightful Desert Getaway
Gillian’s place on the Terlingua Ranch is a lovely retreat in Dark Sky country. Stars and the Milky Way were probably better than we’ve experienced anywhere. Management very responsive and attentive. Property owner may have time to share history of herself and the property but only interacts if invited. We’d come back. For the uniqueness of the property it’s a good value.

Spectacular home.
This property was far beyond any expectations. It's truly one of a kind. The peaceful solitude was incredible. The sunsets and sunrises were amazing. We were blessed to have a storm all around us and even a rainbow. The house is very unique. It's a great place to relax after exploring Big Bend. We'll be back.

Like an oasis in the desert!
Just an amazing house that makes you feel like you own the world. Incredible sunrises from the back patio. A sky full of stars. Silence. Breathtaking views on all sides, and a house on the inside that feels like living in the lap of luxury. I doubt there is a house anywhere near Big Bend that could match this one, and we would stay here again if we ever came back. It was just a great, great way to start and end our days in the park..

This house is absolutely beautiful and it is not too far from Terlingua (Big Bend), but just far enough to get away from it all. We rented this house after a 3-day Rio Grande rafting trip through Big Bend so it was a great way to wrap up the long drive from Dallas. The whole trip was very relaxing. There is not a lot to do out in this area, but that is the point of it. You are surrounded in nature and isolation and a beautiful State and National park. The house is even better looking than the photos and it is larger than what it looks like. Everything we needed was provided. There was a good supply of charcoal, seasonings, and kitchen utensils for cooking all of our meals there. They could use some better knives, but it was no big deal. The house is plenty big enough for two couples or a large family. We even road our mountain bikes around on the dirt roads and went hiking on the hill out back. The library was a great surprise too for the cold and windy last day at the house.

Wow, wow, wow!
This place is amazing! Our family just returned from 3 nights at this house and the property was beautiful. From the architecture of the home to the decorations and folk art from many countries, it was all perfect. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well-stocked and the home was quite spacious! The owner was lovely and Janet was very helpful in providing information prior to arrival. The check-in process was great even though we arrived after midnight. Would definitely return if we go to Big Bend again.

Peace, quiet, tranquility, stars.....
Wonderful property. We were looking for a peaceful place to get away from everything and this was the perfect choice. The house is beautiful with multiple courtyards and seating areas. Nights are dark and the skies are beautiful!!! The stars are so bright!! The kitchen is well stocked. We cooked all our meals at the house and had everything we needed. The only thing we brought with us was a rice cooker. Note that you need to conserve water while at this house as they rely on a rain catchment system. We absolutely loved our stay and are hoping to get back down there in the future! If you like tranquility and want to get away from the craziness of city life, you won’t be disappointed.

Serene private location
This property was 10 miles off the road on the way to Big Bend National Park. It is beautifully decorated, well stocked and as peaceful as you can imagine. The sunrises, sunsets and star gazing opportunities took our breath away. Janet was super helpful pre-arrival and we’d highly recommend this property to anyone.

Oasis in the desert
Dos Corazones is a beautiful house in a beautiful location! We loved watching the changing light on the mountains and one evening saw the Rosillas mountains glow orange - quite a sight! We had the good luck to meet the owner, who was pleased to explain the many treasure in her lovely home. It was a good awareness-increasing experience to be conscious of water usage and I hope that carries over when we return home. We spent our days in Big Bend National Park, about a 35 minute drive to the Study Butte/Terlingua entrance and were happy to have such a lovely place to return to each evening, since closer lodging seems to be mostly RVs! We enjoyed LaKiva and Starlight restaurants in Terlingua, but restaurant choices are very limited so our well equipped kitchen was useful. And the Cottonwood store in Terlingua has an amazing selection of some of just about anything!

A Home, not just house
Spectacular inside and out. Serene and comfortable. Loved the folk art from the U.S. southwest and Africa. It matched our tastes perfectly. Bed and bath were just what we needed and enjoyed. Kitchen extraordinarily equipped. Be aware there is no microwave when purchasing frozen food in Alpine for your stay. Also, no washer and dryer so pack suitcases accordingly.
A wonderful place to stay!!!

Beautiful Home
We were very impressed with the home. If you are looking for remote luxury, this is the place. The only complaint about the House was the lack of window coverings- master bath included.

Small hick up, wonderful stay
We were just talking about this place. We will definitely be back! Loved the kitchen, it’s a real cooks place, we never used the outdoor grill, although we plan on only eating at the house since we have confirmed there is literally no place that offers decent food.. like no where! So having this house as home base is amazing and very relaxing, just beautiful. The A/C broke upon our arrival, with a good amount of water all over the den floor, so some real work went into cleaning up the mess and continual checking to make sure no more damage was done while the issue waiting to be fixed. As a home owner I get it.. it would have been nice to have been compensated in some way for the effort and time spent cleaning, calling, waiting and not having AC for the duration.
Either way, we will recommend you all and look forward to returning.

Perfect W. Texas Getaway
Visited Big Bend NP, the house is about an hour drive from the Panther Junction visitor center, which is in the middle of the park. Definitely not the closest place to stay for the park but I doubt we could have found a better place. Not sure why the listing says Alpine because that town is more than an hour away. You are closer to Terlingua, which is about a 30 minute drive. The property information map shows you where it is, so be sure to go by that for your plans. Just know that you'll have to do a bit of driving to get anywhere. I was fine with the location.
Sat on the back porch watching the sunset one night. Would have done that the other nights but we were in the park watching sunsets. The setting is amazing. Beds were comfortable, you need to watch the water usage, there are multiple note cards around the bathrooms and sinks to remind you. There were four of us on our trip. House was plenty big, every room was clean, bedrooms on opposite sides of the house. There is wireless available but it wasn't as reliable or fast as it is in our house in DFW. If that bothers you, you need to understand - you're coming out here to get away from that rat race. Unplug, forget the nonsense you left. Enjoy where you are.
I always ask myself on trips like this: would you stay here again? Yes. In a heartbeat. It was one of our best vacations in years.
