About this apartment rental
Do you love the chic elegance and intimacy of fine boutique hotels? If so, then Palazzo San Bernardino is for you.
The architectural detail and design of this apartment – such as the exposed stone walls, the travertine floor tiles, and the wrought-iron artistry – evoke not only the warmth of Old-World charm, but are details that beautifully and authentically harmonize with Spello’s medieval character. The unmistakable pink/peach-coloured original stonework (found on the nearby Mount Subasio) makes Palazzo San Bernardino a truly genuine “Spello” home.
The apartment offers all the amenities required to make your stay truly comfortable and memorable. With entry level offering open space living and dining with full kitchen facilities, followed by a staircase up to the first level, where you will find a beautifully sunfilled bedroom with wardrobe and a small retreat loft with sky light and a seperate spacious bathroom with laundry facilities.
Guests of Palazzo San Bernardino have exclusive access to an independent (street-level) private entrance.
One of Spello’s most important historical streets is literally at the doorstep of Palazzo San Bernardino. Spello’s historical and cultural attractions are accessed with equal ease – most “must see” museums, churches and other sites are within a 3 to 20 minute walk.
Located in the historic centre of Spello, within the town’s ancient walls, Palazzo San Bernardino is only steps away from a myriad of pleasures … locally-owned and operated boutiques, gourmet restaurants, casual terrace-style dining, coffee and wine bars (“cantine”), galleries, artist studios, and “gelateria & pasticceria” (ice-cream & pastry/bakery) shops. Various services (including banks, pharmacy, grocery, newspaper stand, post office, train station, taxi service, etc.) are also in close walking proximity. Spello’s historical and cultural attractions are accessed with equal ease – most “must see” museums, churches and other sites are within a 3 to 20 minute walk.
Spello is a hillside village, located in Italy’s “cuore verde” (green heart) of the Umbrian countryside, that pre-dates Roman times. Don’t be fooled by its small size – Spello is a jewel of a destination with a rich historical and cultural story to tell. The warmth and hospitality of the “Spellani” townspeople will win your heart.

We had a fantastic time in Spello! Simona was a great host, and we couldn't be more grateful for her flexibility after our flight was canceled to Italy-delaying our arrival by 1 day. She checked in on us during the week, and gave us some great recommendations. The apartment was located perfectly, and we would definitely stay here again!

This is a perfect place to stay in the heart of Spello, on a beautiful street near everything you need. The duplex apartment is actually better than it appears in the photos - modern, spotless and comfortable with a large bed and closet space and a large modern bathroom. Ramona, the host was enormously helpful and picked us up at the train station making check-in anxiety free and easy. I highly recommend staying here!

2 WEEKS IN A FAIRY TALE!!
My sister-in-law and I had the dream vacation of a lifetime!! For 2 glorious weeks, we got to live on this most famously decorated street that we only first saw in a photo. It was like stepping into a dream! What a privilege to stay in this enchanting thirteenth-century medieval walled city! People were always stopping by to take their picture in front of our flowered apartment! But what made our stay more special was our gracious host Simona & her adorable canine companion Gilda. We fell in love with both of them. They will always be our forever friends and it truly broke our hearts to leave them. Their charming place has all you need and is close to everything you need as well. Several other walled cities are close by & a must-see if you like to explore. Simona & Gilda can give you some suggestions and information. The food in Spello is amazing (try La Cantina!!) & the shops are plentiful. Even though we didn’t know the language, it didn’t seem to matter because the people were so kind & accomodating to us and Simona speaks perfect English. We quickly learned how to communicate with the locals and we got along very well!! Such an adventure we will treasure for a lifetime!! We can’t wait to go back & when we do, this will be our apartment again!! Grazie, Simona and Gilda, for everything! We had the best time ever!! We miss Italy and we love & miss you both!! Your place was PERFECT!! Ciao!

For two beautiful weeks this was our home in Spello. We couldn’t have been happier. The location is easily accessed, right on the main roadway up through the village. It’s neat, tidy, modern and adequately equipped. Simona picked us up at the train station and settled us in, then remained available and responsive whenever we had need through the remainder of our stay. We dream about returning.

Having spent the 2nd week of September in Spello, we enjoyed our stay in the apartment Palazzo San Bernardino. It is well located in the historic village walls and within easy distance to restaurants, cafes, locally owned shops and supermarket where one can find anything for breakfast or meals.
Simona met us at a prearranged location and guided us to the free public parking only minutes away from the apartment. She provided us with information on restaurants etc... We found the apartment very clean with large and well-appointed rooms, very comfortable.
Spello is a great location since it is quieter than larger town with more tourists and the residents are friendly and proud of their town.

The property itself is comfortable and lovely, and Simona is an incredibly helpful and welcoming host. Plus- Spello turned out to be a great place to base our time in Umbria- local hikes, fabulous beauty, and lots of great towns and wineries to visit nearby. When we arrived, Simona greeted us, and had recommendations for things to do and places to eat in town. When I asked about hikes, she gave me a whole driving tour of the area so we would know where to go! Even though we had a few struggles- previous tenants had turned off the water to the washing machine, and the Internet connection was problematic- Simona worked with us to resolve all issues. Also- the apartment is next to the most beautiful spot in Spello- and the whole town is great for photographs. Kitchen and sitting area on ground floor, bedroom and large bathroom upstairs. The washing machine and a separate sitting area are in lofts reached by ladders. Very nice place, would stay there again!

We enjoyed our stay at Palazzo San Bernardino for 4 days in September 2015 very much. It is a nice, bright, quiet apartment, perfectly located on a flower filled corner in the lovely town of Spello. It is very conveniently located inside the historic village walls and a short walk from the free parking area. During our stay, we took several trips to neighboring Umbrian towns, but it was always so nice to come back to our quaint "home", away from the many tourists, to experience the warm hospitality of the Spello residents. Although the apartment has a kitchen, we ate only breakfast there, choosing to eat out every evening at some of the many fine restaurants within close walking distance. One evening, we enjoyed just sitting out on our door stoop, sipping wine and visiting with people walking by. Simona was a good host and very helpful, meeting us at the highway turn-off to lead us to the apartment and also showing us the way to the parking area. This is a great place to stay, especially if you want to be away from the many tourists in other towns and have an authentic Italian experience!

We stayed at Palazzo San Bernardino in late May 2015, and found it to be even better than portrayed. It is located directly on the quaint, main road of an Umbrian village. Easy access from the highway and easy to drive through town - unheard of in a small, ancient Italian historic center. The unit is also located directly on one of the most well-known streets in town and many photos are taken on this corner. The house has most of the basic necessities, as we cooked in a great deal during our two-week stay. The unit is spacious, light, and airy, having recently been redone. Very close, charming, and fine restaurants within walking distance, as well as lovely shops. Free parking a short stroll away. Again, unheard of. Spello citizens are warm and receptive to us as tourists. There are a few tourists in town, but if you want to experience true, Umbrian hospitality without excessive tourism, this is a great location. Simona checked on us frequently, but not obtrusively so, and actively encouraged our input. Great jump-off point for day-tripping to Umbrian towns or hiking up Mt. Subasio.
