friendly welcoming staff. Breakfast adequate for my requirements.

Although the weather was appalling outside, the welcome from the staff at the Royal Oak was warm. Our rooms were roomy, the beds comfy and showers hot. We had an evening meal which was very good and well priced as was the breakfast. All in all a good start to our first day of our touring Scotland holiday. Very good value for money.
The only thing for me was the bedside light not being bright enough for me to read comfortably - rotten eyesight - and the headboard banged the wall everytime I turned over - good job I am old and not frisky!!

The Royal Oak is a real gem. We booked at short notice and didn't expect a lot given the low price but it really exceeded expectations. The staff are so friendly and helpful and the pub itself is a lovely traditional one with real fires and comfortable seating. We had a delicious dinner and enjoyed good ales and wines. Breakfast was excellent too, with a great selection of hot and cold food, served quickly and with a smile. The room has been recently refurbished, the bathroom in particular being really up to date. We didn't expect nice extras like complimentary toiletries and bottled water but there they were. Thanks you, we'd love to stay here again.

Friendly staff who found a safe place for our bikes. Rooms were basic but ok . Breakfast was very nice and it was good to have the dog with us at all times. Evening meal in the pub was adequate but would have preferred a vegetarian option.
Having to walk through the pub with all our belongings.

We stayed at the Royal Oak on our way up to play golf at Slaley Hall, from the outside it looks nothing but Sonia the host is a lovely lady, the food was delicious and the bedroom was clean and the bed so comfortable.

Lovely friendly pub (both staff and locals!) Excellent value for money and an attentive landlady who we felt would fall over backwards to make sure we had a good stay! The room was warm without being stuffy and had everything we needed. The breakfast was very good with plenty of choice as was the evening meal we had there.
On a personal note I found the bed too spongy (but I do have back problems) otherwise I would have scored it 10 - my husband said it was fine.

Nice welcome. Good atmosphere. Dog friendly.
No complaints.
Even the other guests were nice.
Bad weather but great views.

Lack of a cask ale and the chicken curry seemed to lack any spice or heat

All three were good; also a very friendly pub atmosphere
The location near an old colliery could perhaps have been better (it was dark and raining so I couldn't really see) - but what can you do?

Very central for touring the area....staff very pleasant....
Lack of towel rail in the bathroom seems a small thing but it would have been very useful as would a shelf to put your toiletries on....

Breakfast was good. The room was comfortable. The locals in the bar were very hospitable. Altogether I had a good time.
Unfortunately dinner was not available due to a funeral so it had to be a takeaway which was a bit disappointing but quite understandable in the circumstances.
