- The establishment is located by the beach;
- Heard some howler monkeys early in the morning.
- Welcoming/reception was bare minimal (we actually felt like we were disturbing);
- Pool wasn't ready on the day we got there (was being filled);
- Didn't see a restaurant nor were we offered a menu; Didn't see any bikes either;
- Some wildlife into the premises including bedroom that show sign of lack of maintenance and cleanliness. Duct tape on the wall;
- Propane tank in our kitchen was leaking (big smell);
- Paying extra for beachfront is a rip off (the whole establishment is by the beach anyway - the only good thing about this place;
- The owner was watching American news quite loud in an open space area in the evening (not so much the type of background noise you want to hear while in vacations);
- IMPORTANT: If you do end up going anyways, make sure you take a snapshot of the price you got on Booking.com. When we booked, it required that we payed upon arrival (and not via Booking) and we realized we were charged more than the price on Booking.
We were happy to leave after our one night.

The staff was really friendly and accommodating. The cabins are surrounded by nature and the dogs were wonderful at making me feel safe and welcome! Thanks again for the great stay!

We stayed at this hotel just for the night as it was on our way between two cities. There was amazing access to wildlife and really cute dogs that were guarding the property. The pool was quite cool and clean.
The bed was not comfortable and the cabins are kind of tilting. The property isn't expensive to stay at and I would say that you get what you pay for. The owner was absent for most of our stay, but we were mostly in and out and appreciated that it was inexpensive.

We are an adventure seeking couple that always looks for the more quaint, remote, bungalow type facilities so this place was perfect for us! We stayed two nights and the first day we saw two kinkajous in the trees right above the property! The next morning we woke up to an amazing chorus of howler monkeys—at least 8 of them along with their babies hung out in the trees above all morning—it was quite the jungle experience! We also saw a huge iguana in the canopy above us and listened to macaws fly about.
Jim, the owner of the property, was very kind and knowledgeable about the area and attractions. He let us borrow some things we needed for our hike at the nearby reserve and offered discounts on local attractions. He has four very sweet dogs and he was very meticulous about keeping his pool clean—which, was very refreshing!
Property sits right up against the beach and you can stroll in either direction without a glimpse of any other humans. Short drive to the main town and very close to the national reserve entrance. We highly recommend the 5 kilometer hike first thing in the morning to experience different bands/species of monkeys.
Nothing—it suited our needs perfectly.

The pool, the location on the beach, nice staff, nice dogs. We were upgraded. Thanks Jim!
Ceiling fan a bit noisy but another fan at disposal. Light in the room could use a shade for reading,

Great spot right on the ocean, lots of outdoor spaces including a pool to cool off in. Jim was a great host and upgraded my cabina on arrival. It was nice to have a kitchen, do some laundry, and the sweet dogs were a bonus!

Jim was so lovely, helpful and knowledgeable! The road is being redone so it's a bit bumpy but worth every second for the beachfront location! When the tide is in its lovely and sandy and when the tide is out there are cool rock pools to explore

The remoteness of it
beautiful landscaping, small and intimate
Jim was very informative and gracious
Jim could play his music very loud early in the morning
it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. but if you ask him to turn it down he will

The location was excellent and private. The owner was a great host and very accommodating
A feminine touch, as a guy we just don’t see the finer touches that make it just that little bit better

I enjoyed every bit of it. The owner is super friendly and very accommodating to what ever you need. I'd take walks down the beach walking rocky (owners dog). Monkeys and iguanas just hang around the property. Very nice experience

We loved our stay at the howler monkey hotel. The cabin was neat and had a good atmospere, well actually the whole park had a good atmosphere:) Jim (the owner) told us that he tries to biologically balance the area with plants, toads, bats etc. This means you don't get bothered too much with insects you do not want. The place feels in harmony with nature, really special.
And if you like good stories, talk to Jim, he got plenty.
A tip for Cabuya: if you love to go into the ocean (and to island of the dead), take water shoes with you, then the rocks aren't a problem.
That we couldn't stay longer ;)

Very friendly
Hotel owner would leave and come back until noon or after and there was no one at the front desk to help
The bathroom was outside so if you need to go you'll get wet if it was raining

This place is a true little slice of paradise. As the website says, it really is where the jungle meets the ocean. The road to get here may be a little bumpy however I promise you that it’s totally worth it. When you arrive you’ll be greeted by Jim, the owner, who is from Ireland originally but has been here 20 years now. He’s a very kind soul with a big heart, love for all creatures, especially his 4 canine companions who like to greet each new guest as well and is a plethora of knowledge, If you have a question, he more than likely has an answer. He also loves to share stories of past experiences to any listening ears so if you have the time you should sit with him a spell. The cabins are literally just steps from the ocean and are fully equipped with all you need and are very comfortable. Now, if you’re looking a 5 star, fine dining, luxury hotel with AC and cable TV, when this may not be a good fit for you however, if you are looking to get away from all the over priced tourist areas and really escape into nature, soak in the green, beautiful vegetation that surrounds each cabin and listen to the waves crash as you sit seaside and watch the morning sun rise while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee, followed by a dip in the sparkling clean pool then this is absolutely the place for you. So do yourself a favor and feed your soul what it’s truly hungry for and return to quietness of nature and when your stomach tells you that’s it’s time to feed it as well you can rest assured that there are 2 or 3 restaurant options within walking distance that will blow your mind. I’ll definitely be back so I hope to see you there :-)

a frame property and on the beach
dogs locked and chained at the property entrance.
really undernourished and howling dogs chained up in neighbouring properties
facing a cemetery on an “island” and it feels like voodoo practice.. very earrie and dark, overgrown.
not great for families with younger children who need the bathroom climbing down steep dark steps T night with wild creatures and bugs everywhere.. that’s not the problem.. the problem is having so many wits about you just to use the loo in the middle of the night.
owner kept saying, dont climb, don’t run, watch your step, don’t swim alone because he didn’t have insurance..
one half of the pool was proudly overgrown with frog spawn.
it took us ages to find property as it looks like Montezuma but it’s 8km from there along a long road not walkable with ease and little legs more than once.
if you’re adventurous and use to roughing it, good but bad voodoo vibes there for sure!!
owner and his helper were drink most of the time enjoying life laid back.. and it shows(sorry guys)

Excellent location just in the edge of the main town, which meant a quiet little area right on the beach but close to everything you need. The owner was away but David who is standing in to run the place was amazingly helpful with everything, very knowledgeable about the area, and as a bonus also runs the best restaurant in town (adonde café! Check it out)
Everything was great

I really had to laugh about some if the reviews. If you’ve travelled in Costa Rica and you know how expensive it is, I mean I paid for some dorm beds more than for this room, then how can you complain. To have a kitchen , bathroom , terrace and balcony all for yourself and for that price!

It is all nature and everything is calm and friendly. No one is in a hurry and thats what I love. It is directly at the sea. The bungalows are very comfortable.

The position is so beautiful, right on the shoreline of a particularly unspoilt part of Costa Rica. Surrounded by nature, Howler Monkeys in the trees. Cabo Blanco nature reserve just 2 klm away, an wonderful walk through the jungle. The host was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Our hut had everything we needed. The pool was refreshing and clean. We were sad to leave.
Although remote it is only a short distance from Mal Pais if you have a 4WD

The location couldn't be better, the cabins were in front of the beach with great views (only the ones in front).
The service could be better, when we checked in, we were located in a cabin and then forced to change to a different one with the same specifications. The owner was rude and didn't even apologize for the inconvenience. We had all our stuff already unpacked and it was raining.
The small swimming pool was very dirty, the kitchen we were using had a lot of ants and other insects. Giving the appearance of not being cleaned up before our check-in. In general, the hotel could be in a much better conditions, it's a shame given its great location and environment.

The way to the hotel is well marked on the road - appreciated that.
The cabins are rustic, authentic and basic. Well equipped for what we needed. The pool is cleaned everyday and room cleaning was available whenever we wanted/needed.
We had what we needed to cook our meals, the internet was steady, the parking was easy, stores for basics are close by. The beach in front is mostly for beach combing, walking and the view or laying in the hammock soaking it all in. There is a super swimming beach a ten minute drive away. The dogs were so lovely they were hard to say good bye to - Skippy and Millie. It was wonderful to be tucked in close to the edge of the jungle. We had regular visits and heard the sounds from birds, monkeys, iguanas, geckos, frogs and toads and insects-we loved it. The wildness felt close by while we felt safe and sound.
The owner and staff were responsive and genuine. These are real people.
More lighting in the bedroom and a lid for the compost, didn't think to ask when we were there.

This is a little paradise 😊 We wanted to stay for 3 nights but decided to stay one more! We would stay a lot more nights if our flight would not go back ;) 10 reasons to come to Howler Monkey Hotel:
1. It's in Cabuya, a small town not as touristic as Montezuma, but everything around you need! Supermarkets, a bar, a very, very good and cheap restaurant, a beach and a lot of nature!
2. The pool! We love the pool! The beach is swimable, but as we are here in rainy season the water is quite brown and we don't feel that comfortable with the waves... But it's not a big deal, because you can lay on the beach, have a swim in the very clean and refreshing pool and then just fo back to the beach ☀
3. There are a lot of things you are allowed to use for free: 3 bicycles, kanus, the washing mashine (Jim even gave us washing powder!)... Normally you always pay a kilo price for laundry, but here you are just allowed to use it for free. Also the bikes are gorgeous for having a short ride to Montezuma.
4. This reason is special for German guests: if you are german, Jim offers you a very good beer as a free welcome drink! Fantastic isn't it?
5. In the morning you can just come to the bar with your cup and get free coffee! We haven't made it yet as we don't drink a lot of coffee, but if you like coffee, this is gorgeous!
6. Jim! Jim is a very helpful host! He welcomed us warmly and explained a lot about the nature and his little paradise. He is always helpful if we have a question and also organized a taxi for our traveling on tomorrow ☺
7. The houses are very clean and for us there is everything we need in the kitchen to cook simple but delicious meals :) There is no AC, but very effective fans (3 of them!

Nothing.
The place is not at all what it looks like on the photos. Really old and dirty. When we were checking in, the dog urinated in the swimming pool. The cabins smell like cat pee and are very wobbly. We are doubting if the place is safe, the kitchen uses a very old gasbottle and in the rooms you have to use a noisy ventilator that looks like it can come down anytime. We left after the first night, even though we paid for three, because we did not feel comfortable at all at the place.

Jim is a knowledgeable and accommodating host. His place is a short distance from both the popular town of santa Teresa and the laid back town of Montezuma, but for a fraction of the price. Cabuya is a quiet town full of wildlife and some delicious restaurants within walking distance. Cabo Blanco reserve is only a short walk away, but we saw more wildlife in Jim’s pool: white faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, iguanas, and many types of birds including a family of pelicans nesting right above us. We borrowed snorkeling gear to explore the waters around the island cemetery that is accessible only at low tide, and bikes to get to the supermarket down the road. The cabins were exactly what we needed: room for the whole family and a kitchen below to feed the kids. The kids loved learning about the endangered frogs that Jim is breeding back into population, and during the storms at night they serenaded us to sleep. Truly a magical place and a HUGE bang for your buck!

We loved the Cabinas. They are so cute, rustic, comfortable and very clean. This property is beautiful with a pool and seating areas poolside and on the ocean beachfront. No AC or fans needed here at this time of year for us as we don’t like to be cold. The dogs were lovely. The howler monkeys and parrots were around. The owner Jim has a side pool in which he is raising tadpoles. Walking distance to a few restaurants and corner store. About 6km bike ride from Montezuma. Tranquility!!
The road from Montezuma could be tricky if there’s a lot of rain as is the case in other areas around here. But that’s why it is so beautifully uninhabited by mass tourists and construction.

The Howler Monkey Hotel is a really unique spot in a fabulous location. Jim is an incredibly hospitable host. He took the time to show us all around the gardens when we arrived , he is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to the ecology of the area and has a real interest in conservation.
The rooms were spacious and clean and the showers were powerful and always had hot water. Jim also allowed us to use the laundry facilities at no extra charge.
Really enjoyed our stay at The Howler Monkey Hotel.

Great little spot close to the national park, very quiet and chilled and Jim is very helpful with lots of info on the area and help with shuttles etc for travelling on.
The little a-frame is a bit old but it did the job!

it’s right by the beach and there is a nice hamac to enjoy the view
To begin, we didn’t really felt welcome when arriving, indeed one of the staff tell us to get out of his face when we were complaining to him that: we didn’t had any knife to cook, the plate were dirty, we cannot cook on the hop at the same time plug-in the fridge… there is some cockroach and hunts everywhere in the bungalow… there is very few equipment to cook, not even a cutting board.
You might also like to know that the hostel is ten minutes drive from montezuma and that there is some frogs yelling super loud all around the property, maybe they should rename it howler frogs… we did hear some monkey also tho.
