The most amazing place I have ever stayed. To have an NPO this beautifully run which supports the local community and children is amazing. Already trying to work out a way to come back.
Nothing - this place is paradise

My property had all I needed for an amazing overnight stay on the Chumbe Island. I had a great view of the sea from my bed. A magical location.

This island it’s a piece of paradise!

This is a unique ecolodge on an island that is small enough to walk around and surrounded by protected coral reefs. The lodge and bungalows are rustic but very comfortable and the views are spectacular. With only 7 bungalows, it’s a peaceful and serene setting. The food was wonderful and all the staff made me feel very welcomed. The coconut crabs are fascinating and the snorkeling was amazing!
It’s a splurge financially but I like that it supports the Coral Reef Preserve and community programs to educate local people about the importance of preserving the reef.

An amazing place for digital detox (yes, they do have very good internet, but only in the common area) and some me-time.
The reef is amazing, full of fish, even saw black tip reef shark there (mo worries, these are small and harmless for humans).
The food is authentic and comes in great variety. And night snorkeling is an unforgettable experience!
The bungalows are real traditional African houses, as close to the nature as it gets, but I never felt I lacked any comfort.
The best part: the money this little getaway makes is reinvested into educating the community and preserving the nature!

We stayed for one night and it was a really unique experience. We enjoyed the snorkelling and learnt lots from the head ranger who gave us a guided tour of the forest and a talk in the evening. It was great to learn about the conservation and education programmes running and be able to support these. All the staff were super friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed having a cocktail and watching the sun set. There were lots of options to choose from for food. The rooms are really amazing eco huts which are really fun to stay in and it's great to have minimal impact on this beautiful island. We enjoyed the coconut crab walk in the evening and were surprised at how many we saw!

The food is so much nicer than I expected. The chef is excellent, all the meals were exceptional. The entire staff is super helpful. The hote stay was pretty unforgettable due to the natural vibe of the hotel, the isolation, and the different species you'll see on the island. Truly beautiful island. You must must must witness the coconut crabs, the largest land crabs in the world.

All the patrol guards and the staff were so nice.
We were treated like queen & king.
The beach is the most beautiful of Zanzibar.
The best snorkeling place of Zanzibar.
It’s a little bit expensive but, our money helps to protect this amazing and fragile environment.

best food and wildlife in Zanzibar 💛

I had previously been to the island on a tour and had fond memories of the place. I returned with my boyfriend and we had a fabulous time from start to finish. The snorkeling was a highlight for us and our guide made sure to try and find up the “big 6” sea animals in the marine reserve. We saw a couple sharks and octopus which was awesome!
The food on the island was delicious. The staff were friendly and the island itself is stunning. It was a little oasis. We loved our open air hut.
It is quite expensive. We would have liked to stay longer but couldn’t justify the cost when there are much cheaper options in other beautiful locations in Zanzibar.

Dinner under the stars with the light of the lighthouse, corals, beach, view from the light house and there was only 1 guest on the island besides me!
Shower water was yellowish.

Everything is amazing! The environment, the animals, both in the sea and on land. Staffs are lovely, dinner is romantic!

Staying on an almost uninhabited tropical island, listening to the sound of the waves breaking on the islands shore and the reef surrounding it and getting treated to exceptional nature (coconut crabs, a beautiful reef to snorkel to and a breathtaking view from the lighthouse); everyone would want that, right? It's every single bit as great as it seems in the pictures. The bungalows are comfortable, the beds the best ones we have had in Tanzania / Zanzibar and the food and facilities are great. The staff is passionate about what they do to preserve the island and reefs and is keen on sharing knowledge. Be warned; one night is absolutely not enough to take this all in...
Absolutely nothing to complain about! Even the minor inconvenience of having to walk through shallow water to reach the boat is perfectly mitigated by offering the possibility to leave any unneeded luggage on shore for storage.
The only real improvement I would see is in the snorkelling gear, which could be a bit better. Nitpicking, though!

Beautiful place, delicious food, nice staff, incredible coral reef and underwaterworld. Haven't seen this for almost 17 years. Stayed there for one night and was alomst alone on the island. Its a paradies and i am happy to help with my stay to support the project to protect this island. Can highly recommend staying there to enjoy this amazing place with its wildlife.

Top service from start to finish with a friendly, courteous and motivated team. Large bungalows in the middle of a small island paradise with lots of privacy and a 100 % sustainable concept (compost toilets, rainwater storage, no plastic). The intact reef is unique and the snorkelling trips are an unforgettable experience. We saw sharks, rays, dolphins and an octopus :) Basically, you will find many exciting activities, guided or on your own (interdidal walk, walk around the island, crab walk, forest walk, climb the lighthouse, reef cleaning). The food was an experience every time and should be highlighted. The atmosphere at the dinner with candles in the sand blew us away more than once. We loved it and had a unique time.
The good cause and the experience were totally worth the cost.
The ventilation in the bungalows is somewhat limited due to the surrounding jungle, which is why we found it very humid at night.

This place is exceptional. We stayed here for 2 nights, and it was one of the unique experiences of my life.
The cabins are natural and comfortable, tucked into the forest close to the beach. The food was exceptional, with beautiful touches for evening meals (candle lit dining in beautiful spots close to the ocean). The staff were universally kind and engaging. There are activities organised each day, including snorkling on a pristine coral reef with great biodiversity, informative forest walks, and evening walks to check out the coconut crabs. There is also a lighthouse which you can climb, offering beautiful views of the island and of the sunset. The staff were even kind enough to offer us morning and night time snorkling, outside of the usual program of activities.
In addition, Chumbe has genuine eco credentials. They practice minimal impact tourism, including composable toilets and water harvesting systems in each cabin. Profits are invested into training and education programs for local communities and students, raising awareness about environmental issues. All the rangers and staff seemed dedicated and highly responsible.
I couldn't recommend this place more! Thank you Chumbe :)

Absolutely everything was above what expected. The solitude is amazing. The quietness, the nature, the views, the beach, the hut, the food, the staff, the animals etc. Everything was just perfect. A once in lifetime experience. Just fantastic.

This was unequivocally the best experience we had during our two-week trip in Zanzibar.
We stayed two days and two nights and would have loved to extend our stay. Most people choose to go on a day trip, but this might feel rushed as there are activities planned according the the sea tides (snorkelling, forest tour, lunch, coconut crabs search). I would recommend to stay 2 nights minimum if possible.
The rates are obviously high, but this really is the most exclusive location in Zanzibar. No big resort or fancy hotel in Zanzibar could ever top this. By staying here, you will be benefitting local communities as the center also gives education to school-goers and fishermen. The work they do is truly important in regards to the conservation of coral reefs and sea life.
The island is otherworldly, and the snorkeling better than anywhere else in Zanzibar with beautiful corals and a lot of sealife.
The 7 huts in Chumbe are 100% eco friendly and at the same time with all the comforts needed - and no mosquitoes! Beautiful design, hot water, a huge bed with a gigantic window to the sea. We peacefully slept to the sound of the waves and woke up to the music of the beautiful birds in Chumbe.
Last but not least, thank you to the wonderful staff, especially the manager Justina for her attention and contagious positive attitude, and Jenny who encouraged a game of Uno which ended up in a lovely evening of laughter with her and the other few guests on the island. Also, the food prepared by the ladies in the kitchen was delicious every time (the octopus recipe was particularly delicious!). Thanks to all of you.
All in all, an intimate stay where we could connect to nature, to ourselves and to other people, and quickly felt at home.

Most beautiful island in the world.

The food on Chumbe is the best I experienced in 3 weeks Zanzibar, it beat some 5 start resorts hands down. The lunches are the best and a treat for day visitors to get to enjoy the offering too. Dinner on the sand under the stars and by candle light was unexpected and divine.
The hanging day bed in the bungalow is such a treat for just chilling and the day beds on the beach in front of the bungalows are perfect for whiling the day away. The louvre windows let the light ocean breeze in and keep the room cool at night.
Snorkelling around the island is fantastic with the reefs in great condition and the fish plentiful due to it being a protected marine park area. We were lucky to have the pleasure of meeting Ben, the marine biologist and man of all trades on the island - sorry Ben if I didnt get it exactly right. We really enjoyed your insights and information and do feel lucky to have spent time with you.
Experiencing the coconut crabs at night was exciting, they are huge and a natural wonder.
Great little details are covered which I didn't even find in some top resorts like a calabash with ladel at the entrance to your bungalow to make sure you don't walk the beautiful fine white sand into your room.
The natural lemongrass insect repellent worked brilliantly and the natural cinnamon soap in the shower was a great touch.
I cant wait to go back and would do 3 nights for sure to unwind, enjoy the food and ensure I got as much snorkelling in as possible.
The staff were wonderful and friendly and helpful too. If you dont have snorkelling gear no worries they have everything for you.
I loved everything but understand that the conditions may not be as exciting or appealing to the less adventurous who need to know how to deal with composting toilets and hand held showers.

Chumbe island is fantastic. The personnel is very nice. You can do a lot of activities (snorkeling, looking at coconut crab). We recommend this place for 100%. The food is excellent.

Everything – the food is the most delicious food I have tasted in so long. It's home cooked, delicious and tasty.
The marine life, the jungle, the fossils, the history, the people, Chumbe has it all!
The feelings you experience when you start to see the island from the boat, until you actually set your foot on it is indescribable. Saying goodbye was uneasy. Hope we will visit again soon!

This has been a very special experience! Magic place with a special vibe. The reef was amazing, the cottages very original and sustainable. The food was very tasty. I highly recommend a visit to this unique spot in the world. Chumbe must be saved and continue to exist!

We loved our trip to Chumbe. Staff is very kind and helpful. It is like a Robinson Island with only 7 wonderful simple bungalows with strict ecologic standards.
Bed was confortable. For us it was a very romantic place. Food was excellent. Interesting activities. Loved the lighthouse.
Snorkeling amazing with incredible rich corals.
We loved the project of coral conservation and local teaching.
It is not a coconut beach and you don’t have bling bling cocktails in the pool. If you want that, don’t go.

Private island with coral reef with healthy coral. Good option for a day trip or one overnight stay.
