Situation au calme mais proche du centre

L’espace commun, le personnel

Il y a de la moisissure partout que ce soit dans la chambre ou la salle de bain donnait l’impression que tout était sale. La salle de bain est petite et peu fonctionnelle. Le rapport qualité/prix c’était du grand n’importe quoi maintenant c’était durant la Santa Semana ce qui pourrait expliquer le prix exorbitant.

Un hostel con mucha buena onda

Bien con la limpieza. Queda cerca de todo y en líneas generales muy bien por el precio que se paga, pero de todo, lo mejor definitivamente es la hospitalidad con la que te tratan. Todo el personal está siempre dispuesto a ayudar con una increíble buena onda

Loved it!

Very friendly staff. They can and will help you to answer all your questions how to get around town but also how to get to your next destination. Hostel is very clean, they constantly work to keep it like that! Very social hostel because of the large communal hang out space where everyone gets together.

Good

It was really good cost-benefit rate. I also really like that it was smaller amount of people in one common dorm. Then I can say that there were a lot of bathrooms and really comfortable hammacks for hanging out.:) Lovely step was also that the free coffe was there for everybody:) and if you ask stuff some questions and advices about the surrounding they were helpfull.:)

What I did not like so much was the vibe of the hostel in general. But it is not bad, it only did not fit to me. Like there is still really loud music during all day till 11pm. There is also quiet enough people which are hanging out and the whole hostel is really social. But the dorm is near the common space and without window, so you have no chance to go sleeping and resting till 11pm. Also what was bad that there is no AC, just ventilator which was to close to the upper bed that I still have sore throat. But that are small things, which somebody in different mindset will not notice:)

Dissapointing

The staff was not friendly at all. Did not feel welcome in this hostel. The rooms and bathrooms were dirty and we paid a lot to stay there.

A home away from home with the nicest staff!

I stayed here for a week in February and loved it! It really felt like coming home to me each time ..... The absolute stars of this place are the amazing common area with hammocks and the stellar staff! Honestly, the staff is among the nicest I´ve ever met on all my travels. They´re super helpful and knowledgeable too. Furthermore, what I especially appreciated is that they welcome everybody with the same genuine friendliness and interest, no matter who you are, how old you are or where you come from. The hostel itself has everything you need and want, including bike rental and updated bus schedules. It´s very social and a great place to meet other people, but it´s also easy enough to do your own thing. The evenings are often lively with chats, music and family dinners, but it´s quiet after 23.00.

The only things I can think of improving are an update of the furniture in at least the private rooms, which would make it (even) better value for money. Also, I would have preferred the restrooms to be cleaned a little more often/thorough.

A great vibe to this hostel with delicious food but uncomfy beds.

This hostel has a great atmosphere, it's social without being intimidating. We had 2 of the family dinners which were exceptional and amazing value for money - the owner is an excellent cook and all the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

The kitchen/fridges could be a lot cleaner. The beds are uncomfortable (but bearable)!

The hostel has a very welcoming and nice atmosphere. The rooms are not very special but the hostel has a very nice chill area where everyone is eating, cooking, and playing games together. So it’s a very nice place to meet new people! The staff is very friendly and they really add something to the open and fun environment.

amazing staff and great location!

a very welcoming hostel. staff go above and beyond to be very personable with you. location is a nice walk into town and great beaches are walkable or bike-able. and between two national parks.

the kitchen is very crammed for the amount of guests staying at the hostel. the facilities are fine and usable but need some TLC.

Great location, clean hostel and nice outdoor common area with plenty of hammocks and a big kitchen with everything you need. Plenty of showers and toilets. The owner and staff are super friendly and organise "family dinners" multiple times a week, where they cook a shared meal for those who wish to join.

Music is played in the common area from 8am until 10pm or 11pm. I was in the dorm right next to the common area so I could hear it all the time, but it's fine if you're not a light sleeper or in the other dorms :)

the chill area is the best, love to hang out there and meet new people! everything is super clean too and the staff just helps out with everything. The shared kitchen has also a lot of basic things which you don’t need to buy yourself :)

Awesome place to stay in Puerto Viejo.

The staff is super friendly and helpful. The common area is lovely and great to relax in. It's a nice quiet area, the hostel is rather small, what I liked. It's clean, has a well equipped kitchen and enough bathrooms. All in all, I highly recommend this place!

Hostel life

The good vibe and the staff. Super friendly!! Its a nice place to meet people from over the world. Jannis and his staff make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. We were glad to become part of the Kalunay family for a few days. We wish them all the best for the future!

The dorm rooms are small but then again thats expected for the price you pay. The showers could be better, I would suggest to have possibilities to dry the floor and I would change the light.

Endless adventures and lifelong connections!

The staff is very friendly and extremely accommodating! The atmosphere is comfortable and community oriented. The rooms are clean and the services provided are timely. The staff gives great recommendations and make even better adventure companions :D I was initially meant to stay a couple nights, and ended up staying for two weeks. Definitely difficult to say goodbye!

Basically everything. Great place to chill, meet new people and close to the center and beach. The place is really clean too, the bedsheets gets changed everyday. The staff is the best, they’ll help you with anything. If you’re reading this, don’t look any further, just book it ;)

Great value for money with an amazing social vibe

Kalunai is perfectly located close to the beach and amenities of Puerto Viejo. I was welcomed by Gonza (sorry for the spelling) and immediately felt at ease. The buildings doors all lead to the dormitories for step in access. Outside is a large open kitchen with two large social tables, many seats and hammocks to relax and socialise but at the same time also having some time to yourself. I stayed in a 4 bed dorm that was cosy but immediately outside the room was lockers and a table for which you could easily pack your bag or use as a desk to work from. There was also a shower/toilet for the three rooms that were in that section as well as more showers and toilets outside should it be occupied. Yanis (again not sure on the spelling) the owner was also very friendly and approachable as well as helpful. He offered to exchange my colons with him for dollars and gave me a fantastic rate. It was easy to use the laundry service and I received my laundry the same day. I also took advantage of the shuttle service to Bocas and that was easy with a pickup from the hostel. This hostel is very social but after 10:30 is quiet time so is suited to those wanting to sleep instead of party. In my opinion it has got the balance of party/social/quiet right! Kalunai is great value for money and I wouldn’t hesitate staying here again in the future.

It happened to be quite hot during my stay and I was in a top bunk sharing one fan with someone on the other top bunk. So I didn’t really feel the benefits of the fan because it mainly faced the other bed. I noticed the bottom beds each had their own little fans fitted, something like this for the other bed fixed on the wall could be quite useful. This really is a nit pick as I really did enjoy my stay here.

La Pura Vida! :)

My plan was just staying one night as I am travelling around Costa Rica however the place and the people easily changed my plan! I ended up staying longer and super happy about it. The staff here is the best! Gonzalo and Aaron made me feel at home, their vibes are priceless and they were always prompt to help with anything. High knowledge about their surroundings and beautiful smiles 24/7. The facilities were great and I could just live there! Great ratio price-quality. Hope to come back soon! I miss you guys and muito obrigado por todo. Los espero en Portugal :):)

super nice social hostel! one of the first times for me staying in dorms and it was a very good experience! the girls i slept with where really nice. the staff helped me with everything I needed.

the bathroom is shared with another dorm & private room, it’s not that bad but just so you know. curtains at the bed could make it even beter!
