The house is in great location and it looks like it was once was in superb shape. These days there are many little things that need to be addressed. The owner is probably not visiting property as the needed repairs would be apparent for anyone who lives in the property for more that a day.
Also be prepared that you need to bring all the necessities: bath towels, beach towels, kitchen towels, kitchen cloths, paper towels, bathroom tissue, kleenex, dishwasher soap, hands soap, dishwasher detergent, rinse aide, GARBAGE BAGS. The house has no leftovers from the previous visitors like you'd use to expect. Don't even think of finding teas, coffees, sugars, oils, etc. You'd need to buy everything yourself. It seems like the management takes everything away.
Also, please read the fine print in the instructions that you'll see 3 days prior your visit. You'd need to bring your own sheets among other things.
Other included amenities like beach chairs, or pool table are in rough shape. One of the two beach umbrellas is broken, the other one is almost there as well.
We didn't even think of looking at the kayaks as life jackets were all piled up outside and did not look attractive.

The grass definitely needed cut. We couldn’t use the kayaks because the water was so low and the bugs were bad. Also, the walk down that steep hill was difficult for us old people.

We had a great time at Second Nature!

Great location and amenities. House could use a little TLC with some simple things like cracked toilet seats, and loose pool table felt. Host was wonderful-available and attentive with questions and concerns. We enjoyed seeing the local wildlife near the canal every morning. Check in and out were super convenient.

We really enjoyed staying here. The porch swing was a hit. My grandson loves fishing in the canal. It's the best of both worlds. Shade and sound in back and beach in front. It was nice being at the beach in the daytime and having the pool in the shade in the evening. The only negative thing is that there was poison ivy/oak around the house and pool and we did come home with some :(
Other than that we had a blast.

We have a great time staying at Second Nature. We loved the pool table and kayaking on the canal behind the house. The house was perfect for our family of 8. We also loved the swimming pool and proximity to the beach. We would love to stay here again in the future if we can make our way back to the OBX.
We enjoyed trips to Wright Bros Memorial, Jockey's Ridge, Fishing and activities on Roanoke Island, visiting and climbing the lighthouses and hanging out at the beach.

It's a great place in a natural setting at the beach with a wilderness feel. The best of both worlds! The beach is a short drive down the road, but you can come back to trees, and shade, and listen to the birds and squirrels on the screened-in porch while relaxing on the bed swing, after spending the day at the beach.
The owner was very responsive, and the place had everything we needed. In 15 years of going to the Outer Banks, this is the best-equipped rental we have ever rented....hands down.
And it was a welcome treat to have a gas stove to cook on, so much better than electric, and plus, we didn't have that same old issue of reflective plates on an electric stove that the rental companies can never seem to get the right size of.
The weather was a bit unseasonably chilly our week so we never got in the pool, but it was in such a nice setting as well.
If you are looking for a place near the beach that doesn't have that same old sandy feel, where you can go to the beach and come back and relax in a nature-type setting, this is your place. I highly recommend it.

Second Nature is a well located, very nice cottage. Our time there was relaxing. The pool is very private and everything about the home met all our needs for a great vacation. My wife and I highly recommend a stay at Second Nature!

The house is at a great location, close to the beach and halfway between Duck and Kitty Hawk, so with great access to restaurants, shopping, and activities. The screened-in porch is also great. We were comfortable in the house, which was very quiet and peaceful—a relaxing getaway for our whole family and our dog. The owner was very responsive. One tip: bring your own paper products.

We loved Second Nature. The location was perfect for our day trips. The home is beautifully decorated, well equipped kitchen, and a relaxing place.

I will start with positives. The location of the house is nice being that it is tucked back in and is quiet. The canal is behind the house and that offered chances to see birds and deer. There was plenty of sleeping space with 5 bedrooms and room for 10 people. My favorite part was the crow's nest (highest deck) and the screened in porch. I kept the screened porch open to the house often for the dogs to run in and out and to hear nature. There is pool but not useable in early October. The way the house was set-up, it was great for entertaining. I enjoyed the artsy, eclectic decorations. Anything you could have needed for cooking was supplied.
To the negatives, the dishwasher was broken and even when trying to organize the repair with the owner, the repair was never completed. Also, the tv sound in the living room did not work and a solution could not be found after multiple messages and a phone conversation with the owner. The same repairman who was supposed to do the dishwasher was also going to look at the tv, but he never showed. The house could definitely have been cleaner, and it is really could use some love with paint and other repairs such as rotting wood. The coffee pot was toast and should not be used. Also, the expensive linens fees DOES NOT include towels. The owner was kind enough to have towels delivered after I messaged him. Overall, it was a nice place to stay but I was disappointed by things not working as they should and as paid for.

This is more of cabin than a house. The location was right, but the house fell far short of expectations. A heavy mildew smell persists in the lowest level and under the kitchen sink. Dishwasher didn't work, but I brought my own dishwasher ;-)
A lot of the decking and stairways outside are rotted and need replacing and a coat of paint would really help. Door to the screen porch was broken, I sent a picture to the property manager on the first day with no reply.
The property manager did pick up the phone when I called at midnight of the 2nd day with water pouring from a lower level light fixture and ceiling. He said he was 73 miles away and to have the neighbor help to get the water turned off. The neighbor happened to have a special tool and had to turn the water off at the street. My kids did a great job of mopping water and emptying buckets. It's a night we will remember.
It was the end of the season so there were a lot of broken items and insulation hanging from the ceiling of the carport. Water toys were full of water and in disrepair with questionable life jackets. It seems there was a lack of pride of ownership/management. Carpets were filthy.
1 family vacation a year should be special, but this property needs about $50k to make it feel special again.
Owner left the pool open for the week for an extra fee. We only saw one other pool in the OBX that had been drained for the winter in the first week of October.
The screen porch is the best feature. Great place to chill.

Our stay was absolutely wonderful and relaxing! The community of Duck offers so much as far as shopping and dining. Second Nature was the best part! We spent so much time cooking and enjoying the homes other amenities: pool table, porch swings, grill, and swimming pool! The location to the beach access and parking was also a great addition; we took daily trips to the beach with our dog! We are excited to come back in the future!

Remote missing in main bedroom, I downloaded Roku app to work it but didn't figure that out until the last night..
other family members wished there was TV's in their room. two did not have tv's
refrigerator shelves need attention. It is very loose and I did break a jar of mine.
I mainly mention this for the owner but what a wonderful place. Had plenty of room and had a really great time. Pool was great just a little cloudy water at the early part of the week but was attended to early on by the pool person and cleared up mid week.
Kitchen has EVERYTHING you need.

The home does need some TLC but…
The neighborhood is quiet. The home is well furnished. The wildlife is abundant. The deer are beautiful to watch. The route to the beach allows for walking, biking, or driving complete with a stop light to get you across 12. Not feeling the beach? The pool was great to have. Centrally located between Duck and Kitty Hawk with all the accompanying shopping, eating, and playing. We lacked for nothing.
Property manager/owner was great to work with. Can’t recommend this home enough.

Booked our stay for a family reunion with my immediate family & 2 nephews (both under 2 years old). The location & amenities were most important, especially the pool.
Our first day there we noticed that the place is not well taken care of: My dad had to spend 6 hours cleaning the pool area & ridding it of poison ivy & pine needles so the babies could play there. The pool was also low on chlorine (we tested the water because it looked questionable). We did not feel comfortable using other amenities like outdoor showers/kayaks because they were grimy, overgrown & had lots of bugs/spiders. Overall the amenities had great potential and on paper seemed exciting but due to the lack of maintenance weren't realistically usable.
There is black mold throughout the basement ceiling & around the skylights in the home. One of the adults stayed in the basement area so the babies didn't get the worst of breathing that in during our stay.
Additionally the dryer did not work and the people who came to replace it would drop by unexpectedly. The pool maintenance man came by the morning we were leaving of course lol.
Lastly, the owner profiled me I assume for being young and cancelled our request for the rental because he thought we'd be too loud. I had to explain extensively why we were planning to be there and who would be there before he approved our request. Why rent your house out at all if you're that worried about the guests?
For the price I would recommend finding somewhere else.

Everything was great for our trip to the OBX. The house was laid out perfectly for our group. And the kids loved the pool. Thanks for letting us stay for the week. Cheers.

We had a great family vacation! Although it was chilly when we first arrived, we really enjoyed kayaking and paddle boating for the first time for some of us.

We enjoyed ourselves. You had the pool to enjoy and a short drive or if you like walking you could walk to the beach. The cottage was close to the shopping or restaurants. We had a awesome time!!!

The home is an “older” well-decorated beach theme home, that needs updating all over. The kitchen was well stocked but the Baking pans were well used and sticky.. the living room has one couch and another very uncomfortable chair. Sitting was not comfortable for a family of four. The beds were not fitted with quality mattresses, so our rest was not great. AC was adequate and so was the water pressure in the showers. The master bath is small……The house needs updated carpets and fresh paint inside and out. The back porch with the bed swing was nice, but the other decks needed replaced. We even had a place that my sons foot went through on the front deck. I reported this to the owner and someone came and covered the hole with plywood. The back yard is steep going down to the kayaks , so there is little back yard area. There is a swing and grill underneath the deck area. The pool was not clean and I reported this to the owner, who said the pool cleaners come twice a week. We were there all week and they never came. The home needs updated all over! Simply not worth what I paid for the rental. It will not be a consideration for next year…..

Everything about the home was as the listing said. Very comfortable home that we immediately settled into. Nicely appointed kitchen and other parts of the home left us wanting for nothing. The couple of small issues that came up were resolved
Immediately. Great home, great location and great home experience for our long term stay. You’ll love it too!!

This is a nice property for a family getaway. We found the property and amenities to match the listing and enjoyed our time very much. The property is located in a nice quiet area but very handy to the beach as well as to shopping options. We would highly recommend this property.

We just finished a wonderful week at 'Second Nature'. The house was stocked with everything we needed. The beds were comfortable and we loved the natural surroundings of the house. We have rented a home in the Outer Banks six times in past few years and this is now our favorit. The natural surroundings, the crow's nest for viewing the stars and sunset, the option to kayak or canoe, the downstairs pool table/game room and the wonderful screened in deck with swinging bed proved a delight to all. Thank you for a wonderful week! We highly recommend 'Second Nature'.

We all had a great time in Duck and at this property! The weather was perfect except for one rainy day. The rain didn't matter as the house has tons of puzzles, games, cards, ping-pong, pool table and the tv is set up with Hulu etc., so you don't have to remember your own password. The layout of the house is great with 4 bedrooms off the main common areas. The king and queen (back side of house) beds on main level a bit lumpy. The screened-in porch is perfect for enjoying meals, playing cards, or just hanging out listening to all the birds. Kitchen is well-equipt. Neighborhood is quiet day and night. Beach access is perfect as one in our group can't walk far, but this trip, she was able to enjoy the beach as access is smooth and we set up chairs close to stairs. Robert, who takes care of the property, was very kind, responsive, and attentive to questions we had. Only concern is the deck to the front door - is worn with some soft boards. We pointed one out to Robert and he immediately fixed it. The two kayaks that come with the property were enjoyed and it was great fun exploring the area via kayak. We enjoyed viewing the full moon on the Crow's Nest on top of house, listening to the owls. Just beautiful.

Very comfortable house with well-equipped kitchen. Easy access to the beach. Couldn't use the kayaks or telescope.

We had a nice vacation with the family.

6 adults, good distribution of King and Queen bedding. TV setup has to be seen to be believed, pool table in good condition with a couple felt separations. On the downside: both the chairs and umbrellas need to be sorted and replaced as needed. The pool toys and floats are in a heap, but the pool was perfect except for some algae issues. The paddle boat was flooded and essentially unusable. That said, we only spent a small portion of our time at the residence. It is centrally located sojudt everything is just a short drive away.

Second Nature was First in our hearts
Loved the house and accommodations. The location and the screened in porch on the back were perfect! Wished we had more time there.
The house is a little older but has everything a family needs to enjoy a vacation. Wished the pool was a little cleaner but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the beauty of Southern Shores.

Just the right place
The house was exactly as described on the website. The house was clean and well decorated. The location was perefct distance from the beach and from town. The rooms were very roomy. So much to do at the house besides going to the beach. The private pool was just perfect for just cooling off and catching some sun. The canal was fun for kayaking and the game room was much entertaining at night. The pool table/ping pong table got much use. Definitely a fun house for a family vacation.

Great location that needs some love
First, the address is Hillcrest Drive in Southern Shores NOT Hillcrest Road in Duck as listed in the ad. Great neighborhood but no curb appeal, rusty mailbox, peeling paint and dirty pool were immediately noticed. House was nicely furnished and decorated. Kitchen met our needs and screened porch felt like you were sitting in the trees. I paid the linen fee but one of the three bedrooms we used had questionable stains on the linens and pillow sham. The grill was so greasy that it was a fire hazard to use. Only one beach umbrella and 4 chairs were decent enough to use. The pool area had overgrown weeds and the lining needed cleaning. I texted Dennis on Sunday and Robert on Monday about the pool and got zero response. Someone finally showed up on Tuesday and it was much improved but not pristine. The pool guy came back on the morning we checked out. The beach is super close and passes provided. The house had large black ants in some areas. We did enjoy the pool table and the laundry room was a plus.

Beautiful area
We were very pleased with our stay. We spent most of our time in the pool and screened in porch. Fiestaware was a nice touch. Being a collected it was nice to see in a rental. The personal art touches was beautiful. The beach was about a 3 minute drive. It was to far for us to walk. Owner was easy to reach. Place was clean and pleasant. The only semi complaint was the mattress were getting wore out. Besides that no complaints

Rental Review
We really enjoyed our stay. The house is well laid out and in a very good location for easy beach access and to see the sites. I knew about the extra cost for linens, but was surprised that there was no toilet paper or paper towels. Very glad that I brought some from home. The grills needing cleaning but overall this house is a very nice getaway.

Cute hideaway in the middle of everything
We loved Second Nature for it's location between Duck and Nags Head but also hidden away in Southern Shores neighborhood with walking distance to the beach and a sound view. The house was well equipped with everything we needed. The game room was especially a hit for our kids. We will be looking to book Second Nature again!

Comfortable well-stocked house in great location
My wife and I visited with our two kids and my in-laws for a week in early November. There are fewer restaurants open at that time of year and Covid made eating out less appealing, so we made every meal in the house. Fortunately, the kitchen had everything we needed. We're used to finding low quality knives in rental houses that will barely slice an onion. But in this house there were at least a dozen high quality forged knives of all sizes to cook with, as well as every kitchen tool and cookware. We also enjoyed boating and fishing in the creek and playing ping pong and pool. My only issue is that the mattresses were a little past their prime. But, on the other hand, I've traveled a lot and rarely find firm enough beds, so it could just be me. But overall we'd recommend this house to anyone.
