About this house rental
Welcome to the Dunes!
We are across the street from the Indiana Dunes National Park, Wells Street Beach and West Beach. The beaches are right out your front door.....and our nearest beaches haven't been affected by erosion like other properties. There's no need to drive to the beach ..just walk across the street and and go over the hill and you are a beautiful expanse of beachfront.
Our house is in the best possible location to visit the dunes and the state parks and the national lakeshore. Our home is recently updated and furnished in a mid-century modern style.
For ALL bookings, included in your stay is a FREE week-long pass to access the expansive Indiana Dunes National Park system (which now has a $25 entrance fee). Our part of the national park is also open to visitors for free just by walking across the street.
Our home is exceptionally designed and well-equipped with easy access to the beach, Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana Dunes State Park, and Chicago. Check out our Indiana Dunes Home youtube video for a quick tour. Our most recent guests have told us they love the house, its amenities and its close proximity to the beach.
We are experienced travelers and have furnished our home with you in mind. We have everything you need to stay safe and stay close.
Beds & Baths: The master bedroom is next to a completely renovated luxury bathroom with a fantastic shower (special thanks to my plumber, husband!) There is a 2nd bedroom (2 twins or a converted king), full bath, with tub/shower and private den with sleeper futon on the lower level. This is the perfect accommodation for 2 couples or a large family --It's ideal for 6 adults or 4 adults and a few children.
The # 1 highlight of our home is the Indiana Dunes National Park - Just sit on the balconies to view the park or walk across the street to access trails.
Inside and out the townhome is pleasant and light-filled. Our bedrooms have new mattresses and bedding. We provide all linens and towels as well as a supply of staples for the kitchen and bath. We even leave beach towels for your use. Leave the laundry to us!
The upper level contains the main living space -- dining room, living room, kitchen, master bed, and bathroom. The main living area has a Crate & Barrel queen sleeper sofa; 15-foot ceilings, and is light-filled and uniquely furnished. Also on hand:
• Games, books and magazines and binoculars, and bird books.
• Wifi throughout
• Smart TV with Netflix/amazon prime
• Smart home features including Google mini home speaker
• USB outlets in each bedroom and throughout the house
• Central air conditioning & fans
• Children's toys, pack n play, high chair, children's utensils and plates, and booster (available on request)
The kitchen is well-equipped with everything you need for a good meal: pots/pans, grilling tools, blender, hand mixer, immersion blender, toaster, kettle, rice cooker, crock pot, Nespresso coffee machine with pods, coffee press, espresso moka, drip coffee pots, Crate & Barrel dishes, glassware & cutlery to serve 10. The landscaping surrounding the house, while appearing like it's just part of the park, is surprisingly intentional. A naturalist regularly comes to remove invasive species and spread native seeds. The plants attract birds, wildlife, and many butterflies. The dune grass hosts regular visitors like deer and other wildlife that traverse our backyard.
Our house has sound-isolating construction-- We rarely, if ever, hear sounds from our neighbors' homes. Our neighbors help keep an eye on things... we are a generally quiet group and hope for the same from our vacationers.
With a garage and driveway, parking is suitable for 2-3 cars. Children are welcome but must be supervised on the balconies and patio.
A fire pit is available for your use and , for the beach, we have a small beach wagon with camp chairs, beach toys, and a beach blanket available for your use. Store your "toys" i.e. bikes/kayaks, beach gear, etc in the garage.
The National and State Parks and the quick access to the beach make us a spectacular choice. The parks are incredibly biodiverse (in the top 10 for all national parks) and offer so many opportunities to explore nature in many ways. The Park Service describes it better than I can: "The continuously changing dunes play host to the abundant natural beauty of rare birds (many rare), abundant wildlife and beautiful hiking duneland trails. Hidden within urban neighborhoods in the Miller Beach section of Gary are pockets of natural land – high dunes, oak forest, wetlands, and wooded ravines. Lake Michigan can be seen from many high vantage points in the park and many rare plants cling to survival on these sandy acres." The park also hosts rare birds and endangered species of plants and animals.
Our home is smack in the middle of the state, national, and county parks that extend in pockets from Michigan City westward to Gary. All of them have beaches with varying have boat, kayak, and water-sport launches. We have great access to Wells street and West Beach. Wells Street is a popular location for locals and hosts a pavilion and concession stand and West Beach is the best "off the beaten path" -- walking into the beach is the best way to avoid crowds and to experience the best beach in the area. West Beach is part of the National Park and it is patrolled and cleaned of litter regularly.
National Park rangers at West Beach guide through the dunes and the park almost daily in the summer months.
Beyond the beach...
Chicago -we are close to the south shore train station that will take you to downtown Chicago in less than an hour. Driving downtown is also quick and easy. We are happy to help you navigate and provide an overview of your options for touring Chicago.
For the kids or kid at heart: visit the Bailly Chelburg homestead or take on the ranger challenge to climb the 3 tallest sand dunes; You can also do some seasonal stargazing and participate in naturalist hikes just for kids. In addition, the national park has birding backpacks available for all ages containing books and binoculars that can be checked out at five of their area offices.
Biking is also a popular activity: the trails are crushed gravel so require a little heavier tired bike. We love cyclists.... if you have specific needs for bicycling, please let us know. We are very experienced long-distance cyclists and can help you with specific arrangements for cycling. Three "dutch" cruiser bikes are stored in the garage and available for your use. Special arrangements for fewer days can also be made for those who are passing through on their bikes. Cycling maps are available as well.

Second year staying here and love the location right by the National Park. Condo is cozy, light and efficient with a quick walk to the beach.

VBRO was beautiful, super convenient location, very clean and accommodating! Really enjoyed the recommendations left for us and the host was very helpful!

Beautiful home where they’ve thought of everything you could need for a beach vacation-a very short walk to the beach -could hear waves from the bedroom. Also very close to the national park-hiked there almost every day

Overall I think Jill was the best host I have ever experienced with VRBO (been using for several years). She was so thoughtful and kind. The property was beautiful and truly included more amenities than listed. The beach was just a quick walk away. The whole experience was amazing.

This home is a few min walk to miller beach and includes pretty much anything you would need to stay at the beach for the day. We used the grill a few times and the gas fire pit on the back patio which is super cozy. The best place we have ever stayed and our kids loved it. We even got to watch some deer and lizards pass through on the back patio. The host was amazing! We definitely want to come back. We have no negatives about our stay here :) You won’t regret staying here!

This was the ideal place for me and my two adult children to reconnect with our Indiana roots, and enjoy all NW Indiana has to offer. Jill, could not have been a more attentive host. The house has everything you could possibly need, including 16 ways to make coffee. (you are bound to find at least one of them to your liking). This was the most well stocked vacation home I have ever been too...not only the kitchen, but also beach chairs, towels, and a wagon to cart everything. Being one block from one of the best beaches was a bonus. Jill and her husband did an extraordinary job of not only creating a beautiful space, but connecting with us along the way to make sure all was well. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The house was clean and well stocked and managed. There wasn't anything that we needed that wasn't available. Best VRBO experience our family has had to date. I highly recommend this location!!

I can’t say enough good things about our stay here! Jill was so helpful and the home was lovely! We had everything we needed and then some!

Although "Lovely Home" accurately describes this vacation house, the pictures do not do it justice!
This space was perfect for our family of five. We had enough room to spread out while still being connected. The owners were diligent with communication before during and after our trip. This allowed them to make sure every comfort was available for our family. They clearly made adjustments to the property to make it inviting not just for my spouse and I but for our children (10, 8, and 2). It felt like an upscale vacation rental while being homey at the same time.
Can we talk about the location?! The walking distance to two such lovely beaches was priceless - especially during the Fourth of July holiday week when we stayed. While the line of cars stretched far around the neighborhood for beach access we were able to quickly and easily grab a spot on the sand. Not only that, but the owners know the area and provided many tips such as how to avoid the crowds. We enjoyed time on the beach whenever weather allowed.
This home may have also turned us into hikers! We visited both Indiana Dunes State and National Park on multiple days. It was too easy not to!
Overall, we would 100% recommend this home and equally desire to return to make more memories.

Attention to detail, well stocked kitchen. 1 block from nice beach with beach chairs & umbrella, beach wagon. Bikes with available tire pump if needed. Gas grill, gas fire pit, outdoor seating. Separation of bedrooms upstairs/downstairs was a plus for us with our adult children. Bathroom spaces excellent. The only slight negative was the high volume of cars at the corner intersection especially on a nice Saturday beach day waiting to park. Communication with Jill was excellent! Will return if visiting the area

Our family visited over a long weekend. Jill was very communicative and helpful in suggestions for hiking in the area and beach locations. The home was perfect for our family of 4.

Our stay here was great. The property is a nice size with two levels (the kitchen on the second), lots of windows/light, multiple outdoor spaces, and many amenities like a grill, beach equipment, and stuff for my toddler to sleep and eat comfortably. Jill offered to combine two twin beds into a "short king" so that the two adult couples (my husband and I and my in-laws) could both sleep together in large beds, which worked great. She also provided a pack-n-play that worked well for my 2 year old. The kitchen was fully equipped, so we were able to make the vast majority of our meals together there and then sit at the nearby dining table or around the sofa/coffee table to eat our meals. There was a matching high chair provided for us that blended in with the mid-century modern decor. Everything felt well thought-out and full of creature comforts. The communication with Jill was daily, but minimal and unobtrusive/kind. We will probably be back for another stay in the future!

The home is nicely decorated. The Bed was comfy. The location was conveient not only for the local beach, but for day trips to Chicago and to Michigan. The A/C maybe an issue during hotter days of summer. Luckily there were fans that helped cool the upstairs, but during the heat of the day it was still a little warm. We really loved having such a nice beach so close.

This was a great place to stay for our family! Jill is extremely accommodating! She knew we had our granddaughters coming and she had some fun puppets out and delivered sand toys for them to use. The beach items that were available to use were perfect! She responded to all of my questions immediately. The house is very nice and has everything you need. I would highly recommend this place!
Thanks for everything Jill!!

Perfect Family Vacation
Jill was so sweet and accommodating our entire trip! With two young kids, she went above and beyond to provide all the extra things to make our stay really comfortable. The beach was a quick walk, and the park was not too far of a drive either! Would absolutely recommend!

Great family vacation at Indiana Dunes
We had so much fun by the Indiana Dunes. We enjoyed so many activities including kayaking, mini golf, cycling, and hiking. There was also a ton of diverse, delicious, culinary cuisine nearby. The beach was amazing with squeaky sand, refreshing water, and just a 5 minute walk from the house! The house was very clean, organized and well-stocked. The hostess answered all of our questions and was very helpful throughout our stay. We were surprised by the amount of traffic noise and bright lights at night in the small neighborhood, but that did not take away from the overall positive experience. We all enjoyed our trip!

Awesome place to stay!!!!!
What a little Jem! Great location. Loved the proximity to things, but you will need to drive and plan for the beach. If you bike it’s good, but coolers will need to be thought out. Jill had a great set up. Parking for beach access is a pain, but right up the street is a $10 parking venue that is def worth it for mass quantities of beach gear. The home is gorgeous! Jill has you def set up and grocery is close. Just map it. We had a terrible forecast with rain, but the home solved that for everyone. And when we did go to the beach we endured the inclement weather with stride. We def plan on visiting this home again. Great communication by Jill was a huge positive, as she only wants families to enjoy the stay at this iconic place in America! Highly suggested!

A very pleasant condo experience
We were looking for room for six within walking distance to the beach. This condo exceeded our expectations. A clean, comfortable place with room for everyone. The walk to the beach was incredibly easy and the renter thoughtfully provided many necessities and amenities.
We cooked our own food, did our own laundry, and entertained ourselves when the weather was inclement. Jill recommended restaurants and activities in the area.
I can't recommend this rental enough. It was a great week for our family.

Fantastic stay
We had a wonderful time. Short walk to the beach and the Dunes. Very easy to explore the whole area including lovely cities such as Chesterton and Porter. The house was clean and very nicely decorated. Jill was a fantastic host, very communicative and thoughtful. She had plenty of great recommendations. We have two little kids and she had the pack-and-play, booster seat, as well as toys ready for them. Planning on returning!

Amazing Labor Day Weekend
We had a fantastic stay over the Labor Day weekend. The house was exactly as described and the accommodations were perfect for our family of 5. Jill has thought of everything and we wanted for nothing. The Nespresso pods were a nice treat and it was great to have several condiments, spices, and pantry items available. It’s a very short walk to the beach: which was perfect and not crowded. Take a right and you’re on West Beach in the national park. Enjoyed the board games and books provided, and we heard not a peep from our neighbors. We’ll be back!

Aug 2030 stay with family
This home is very nice and has everything you would want or need. The home owner is amazing and gave us great information before we arrived so we were prepared for our stay. We loved that we could walk to the beach from the home. The national and star parks are also amazing, so take time to make a visit to the park and get information about the different trails. Highly recommend this property and we plan on visiting again.

Accommodating and Delightful
The property manager was more than accommodating. She was very thoughtful and included interesting and quality materials for everyone’s use throughout the property. If we needed anything her response was immediate and good natured.
Even though the weather wasn’t ideal beach weather for a few days of our stay, we found plenty for my family of 5 (kids 4-8) to do. There are hiking trails everywhere. We particularly enjoyed the 3 Dune Challenge.
In terms of our beach experience, we did enjoy the beach that was accessible by walking distance to the property. Anything you could want for a beach experience was provided. A wagon, toys, chairs, two sun tents, etc. We also enjoyed going down to nearby West Beach one day, it was perfect for our littles as there was a large sand bar down the beach a bit. It created a shallow pool and a “safety buffer” of sand so we felt confident. All of these options and suggestions were part of the property manager’s “concierge service.” She offered up a ton of helpful suggestions and options about where we might want to go.
We also made a lot of food on the property and the kitchen was fully stocked, and clearly labeled, with dishes, pots and pans, spices and condiments.
Great hostess, lovely accommodations, wonderful time!

Hosts couldn't be more generous...
The property was lovely and as described. The hosts communicated perfectly and gave us all the information we needed. Having chairs and such for the beach on the property that we could use was awesome. We went over the 4th holiday which was my mistake - too many people - but, during a non-holiday I bet it's even better. Proximity to the beach was great.

Great house for exploring the lakeshore.
This house had everything we needed and more. Great layout as well as modern and updated. The owner was very easy to communicate with and helpful when planning our stay.

Dunes Beach House
The property was beautiful. Clean and very modern. Jill was very helpful and kind. The beach is 2 blocks away and other activities (train station, hiking trails, biking trails, kayaking) were all very close. The only down side was the amount of traffic and noise associated with it. It made for a couple sleepless nights. I’d definitely stay there again. Next time bring ear plugs... lol!

Great getaway
The home was beautifully appointed and inviting. The high airy ceilings, modern yet welcoming furnishings, and great design made me feel "at home" immediately. Shower, bed, kitchen, patios - all were as advertised and very pleasing! There are a ton of extra touches from books, puzzles, Google play, extra towels and more. They really did make this place with you, the guest, in mind!
Jill was a dream to communicate with; any question I had was immediately answered. I so appreciated the extra touches she left to help me understand the area and relax in her home.
The location was "interesting" as I didn't have any experience with this side of Lake Michigan or Miller Beach/Gary Indiana. From Jill's home I could walk to a beach and trails. She had bikes and a beach wagon to borrow. The sand was outstanding and it was fun to pick up a ton of skipping rocks. What a treat to swim in Lake Michigan in June! The trails were excellent and I explored Chesteron - a darling small town that makes me want to explore the area in greater depth. There are major grocery stores and pharmacies within just a few miles. Only reason I gave the location a 4 instead of a 5 is that I was a bit taken aback by the industrial and rather run-down nature of the area I drove through from the highway. Jill's home is right on a corner that wasn't too far from a large apartment complex. I was worried at first about the potential for noise but it was no problem at all. My rating of 4 shouldn't take away from Jill's home; that's the area.
During the weekday West Beach wasn't that crowded. Mostly moms and kids. Groups of young girls (all well-behaved and laughing). As the afternoon wore on, the party boats would show up. On 1 day it was find but on 2 other days the thumping music full of profanity made me flee earlier than I had hoped. Young men in large boats trying to impress the beach crowd aren't my thing. I checked out the Marquette Beach (sp?) and was disappointed to see a lot of garbage on the gorgeous sand. i wouldn't recommend that particular beach area after what I saw but the beach was pretty!
All in all? I'd recommend and hope to go back.

Fabulous find! Worth checking it out!
The condo was exactly as described. It was very clean and updated as listed. It was a perfect quick getaway choice for our family plus fur baby. The walk to the beach was short and seeing the additional wildlife around the area was cool to see. The property owners (Jill) was fabulous to work with too!
Definitely worth checking out and coming back too in the future! The beach was clean and we had plenty of space to ourselves on a busy HOT weekend too!
