Ideal way to get to experience Tibet in less than a day's travel from Beijing! The hotel is really just in front of the big Labrang monastery, which can easily compete with the big temples in Lhasa. However, one does not need any special permits for Labrang/Xiahe, which is much easier to get to using the high speed train from Beijing to Lanzhou, followed by a 3.5 hours car ride organized by Losang, the owner of the Overseas Tibetan Hotel. While most of the travelers in 2023 were obviously Chinese tourists, this is one of the places that will also appeal to Westerners as the owner and several of the staff speak very good English. Losang has been a travel agent for many years and can provide excellent recommendations for excursions around Xiahe and travel to other regions.
The hotel has spacious rooms with private bathrooms, all with reliable services. The staff is really making an effort to accommodate any requests from their guests to allow to maximally enjoy your stay in Labrang. I would recommend to stay at least 3 nights, but one can easily stay a week. It's a pity that Western tourists have not yet found the way back to China and Tibet, traveling around individually is not a problem.
A few tips for foreign travelers to China:
- Make sure you book your hotels before applying for your Chinese Visa. Bring printouts to the visa application centre.
- Install both WeChat and Alipay on your smartphone, and do the validation of your ID before departure. You can then link your credit card upon arrival in China and pay for virtually everything with either App. Cash is barely used anymore in China.
- Make sure to book a SIM/eSIM card with unlimited mobile data, you will need internet connection everywhere in China to pay. Labrang also has perfect coverage, only in the surrounding grasslands can one loose connection at some locations.
- Use trip.com for train bookings, other apps ask for a Chinese phone number.
Nothing, all way perfect!

The location is great, just in front of the monastery. The Lady at the reception was very nice to us and she didn't make any drama Since we are foreigner.
The toilet was smelling very bad

It was not only within sight, and really just next door to the monestary, but was staffed by friendly and helpful folk. The guy who runs the hotel was super ~ not only had tips for places to go around but took me and a stash of the others who were staying there on a brisk hike in the morning with his macropuppy~ hah. Highly recommended

We loved our stay here! The location is super convenient to the monastery, hiking, and all the shops and restaurants you could want. The owner helped us arrange our transportation from our previous town to the hotel, a day trip to the grasslands (they can even pack you a lunch!), and our transfer back to Lanzhou afterwards. He also had a ton of recommendations on what and how to do at the monastery and in town. Our favorite part, though, was that he took his dog (whom my daughter LOVED!) for early morning walks/hikes in the hills around town and invited us to come along, which meant we got to discover some hikes we wouldn't have known about otherwise. He also recommended another half-dozen hikes for us afterwards.

Located in the heart of the Xiahe Tibetan Region, the hotel offers accommodation literally next to the entrance to the famous Labrang Monastery, and only 10 minutes walk from the bus station. The owner and the staff were more than happy to help me enjoy my stay to the fullest - they helped me rent a bike to explore the grassland, and also offered some really good food recommendations. The room was clean and very homey, I was surprised to find it was exceptionally quiet even with all rooms occupied around me, which cannot be said about most hotels in general. Maybe it’s the thick walls. I ended up staying two nights and had a well deserved rest. There’s also an option to get a really tasty local breakfast for only 20q, with local bread, honey and proper coffee! I will definitely stay there again next time I’m in Xiahe!
There was only one hairdryer for the entire hotel which was a bit of a bugger, since there was only an overhead shower in my room. I think some cheap in-room hair dryers would do the trick!

Great location, just at the entrance of the Labrang compound, helpful staff. Would leave the front desk and accompany you to purchase tickets for the tourist attraction and help you in anything you need.

Perfect location:
5 min walk from the amazing Labrang Monastery
5 min by car from the bus station
1 min walk from Tara where they serve delicious local food
Staff can speak both chinese and english, very helpful and always available.
The room was a bit cold but they provide additional quilts and thermal blankets. If available ask for a heather or it will be challenging to shower

Located on a central touristy street with many convenience shops and restaurants around. Close to Labrang monastery temple and reception lady was very helpful at suggesting the route to check all highlights of the monastery and around. There was a free English speaking tour provided by the monk at 15:15 (also one in the morning), we went earlier as some registration in order to enter the monastery was needed. There is a nice western cafe nearby and close to monastery entrance.
Breakfast was super good and inexpensive, ordered by menu.
Bathroom was a bit old

The rooms were clean and had all the essentials. The staff is kind and the breakfast they make in their bar is tasty.
It was a bit cold in the rooms, but nothing to be worried about.
I think that comparing to the cost of life in Xiahè, the hotel is a bit expensive.
