Wonderful home, brimming with antique ambiance. Fantastic neighborhood with full-time family of deer in residence. Right off the Monarch Spur Trail for delightful 10 minute walk downtown. Highly recommend this property.

Would have not needed swamp coolers if the windows opened. Wonderfully unique house.

It was like traveling back in time. If you like art deco everything and museum pieces you’ll love this place but the funkiness wore off quickly for us. Overall the furniture was uncomfortable, the room layouts were awkward and the entire house was stuffy. Definitely not recommended in the summer in that there is no AC and the windows don’t open. They had fans but unless you left the exterior doors wide open at night all the fans did was circulate the warm, stale air in the house. On top of everything the street in front of the house was under construction so the lack of parking access, dust and noise was a nuisance. No warning on that until we arrived. We have stayed in Salida VRBOs two weeks per year for the last 10 years… this one is over priced and uncomfortable. Not recommended.

We have stayed here on two occasions-once in the winter and once in the summer. The grandsons LOVE it. There is room for everyone, the property is always spotless, it is convenient to everything, and multiple TVs make it a hit for all.
Communication with the property managers is always a positive experience.
THANKS-we'll be back, I'm sure!

Classic Art Deco home in a safe, quiet neighborhood in Salida. We enjoyed the home and all its quirks. Fun art work and amazing wood interior. The pictures are accurate. Loved the round archway! As with all properties there are things which could be better - grill worked well but the tools were moldy, deer ran rampant in the area and there was dung all over the yard and walkways. Overall it was a good experience- comfy beds & cozy home over a long weekend.

WHAT A GREAT PLACE!!!! We go to Salida often, and this was the first time for us in this home. My two grandsons and I loved this place. The furnishings were beautiful & the upgrades to make everything modern kept the historical style. PLENTY of room for everyone! Multiple TV's made it especially nice-the guys could use their video game consoles, and I got to watch sports! Check-in was a breeze-hosts and owners were especially accommodating to us. Great location-easy access to downtown. The many deer in the yard were an added bonus. We will stay there again if possible.

Smoke detector went off first night and called property management; never responded. Carpet and floors were so filthy we had to wear shoes at all times. Stove and oven were filthy and smoked. Bathroom with shower was brown with dirt and hair. Never again.

I traveled to Salida, Co from the island of Kauai for a friend 's wedding. Other old friends joined me from Kauai and across the US. Being able to stay together in an awesome home rather than in separate hotel rooms was a blessing. And This home in particular, with its history, multiple living spaces and deer in the huge yard made for many great memories! We loved and made use of the console record player. The internet connection was strong and easy to access. The owners have wisely added a multi-plug charging station to make up for limited wall plugs. The beds were comfy and there were extra pillows and blankets for those of us who stayed up late listening to old vinyl in the basement. I love that quirky one-of-a-kind features were left un-updated in the home. And the renovations that have been done, do not detract from the 1940s original floor plan and architecture. I would have loved even more info and pictures in the information binder. If they could somehow turn the meat locker in the basement into a bathroom, maybe keeping the same freezer door? And turn the document safe into a place to display historical info about the home and Salida? That would be amazing! The home is really part house/part rime capsule/part museum! Other than that, a hand-held shower wand in the master bath would have been useful to us four ladies trying to glam up for a wedding. None of us wanted to take a bath in a bathtub but it was a small price to pay for staying in this historic home. We also liked that we could easily walk into town. It takes about ten minutes to walk to Riverside Park in heart of Salida or to the weekly farmers market at Alpine Park. Mahalo (thank you) to the owners of this property for making it available on vrbo!

The large yard was perfect for outdoor games and the Heister House was perfectly decorated with period decor appropriate for the era. So fun. Easy walk into town for restaurants, Riverside Park concerts and the Farmers Market!

Interesting house
Staying here is like staying in a time capsule. The decor and architecture are fantastic. The location is a short walk to downtown. The bathrooms and bedrooms were very clean but I had to take care to avoid the spider living under the step. We did notice bugs here and there. Overall I would recommend staying here.

Mountain bike vacation
The house was very interesting. We loved the background of the house. There was information given about it being a historic house. It was very well equipped for our needs and was in a great spot to walk to downtown for breakfast or shopping!!!

Has a lot of potential but needs work
Interesting ! The history of the place was interesting but the property needs a lot of work . Towels , bedding were poor quality. Glasses needed to be washed. Would not stay here again.

Trip back to the 50's
Intriguing retro theme. Comfortable with lots of intriguing ornaments. Plenty of lounge space. Bedrooms are small but well furnished.
Expect regular visits from the deer and geese, who are used to human company.

Definitely feels like you’re going back in time!
At first the house seemed almost more like a museum than a home - there were so many incredible pieces and general architectural features. However, we ended up feeling completely comfortable and loved our stay there.

Heister House Stay in Salida
A remarkable property. Furnishings and amenities were fabulous! Property could use a good thorough dusting throughout. Loved the mid-century, art deco period pieces, both outside and in. Exterior could use some TLC before it loses street appeal. A remarkable experience and one we'll remember!

Unique Vintage home
If you like unique old homes, then this place definitely has a ton of character. I liked that it was close to downtown, easy to get to and was in a quiet neighborhood. It was interesting to see the way the house was decorated as well as see the various rooms. We had no problem with wi-fi nor using the direct tv at any time while we were there. We also loved having the ability to do laundry while we were staying at the house.
The place was surface level clean, but could definitely do with a deep cleaning in some of the bedrooms. While we knew the place didn't have air conditioning, we figured we'd be able to open windows at night to let the cool air in to help with cooling down the house. Only two of the bedrooms had a tiny window that could be opened, and while fans were provided, it took a long time to cool rooms down due to the small amount of fresh air coming into them. Had we known that some of the rooms don't have a window that opens, we might have booked elsewhere since day time temps were in the high 80's.
Due to the amount of breakable items, you're required to do an add-on of insurance to cover any items in the house. This was an extra amount on top of the already expensive per night fee. If you have small children, this house is probably not a great place to stay.

Wonderful long weekend
I chose the Heister House because of the unique architecture and charming mid-century moderne decor. We were not disappointed. The kitchen is tiny but functional. There is no AC however fans are provided and ceiling fans are installed throughout.
We loved the daily visits of doe and a young buck. Fun house, fun long weekend. We'll come again!

Great Location
Easy walk downtown. House was just as pictured. It’d be nice if you could get some more airflow through the house. In the summer when the days are hot it would be nice to pull in the cool night air since there’s no ac at the house and most windows don’t open.

Indifferent host
We lost power our first night. Although the owners had been notified about the outage by the electric company, they did not bother to communicate with us. We had to call the prop manager who knew nothing, not even if there were flashlights in the house. For these prices there should be better customer service.

Like staying in a museum!
Really interesting property - great architecture and period furnishings in the living/dining area. Kitchen and bedrooms are less fancy, but they work. Good, comfortable mattresses. 5 minute walk into downtown, views of the mountains. FYI - the thermostat for the house is on the living room wall above the couch.

Great Gem in the Heart of Salida
This is really a unique property. As others mention, this home is on the National Historic Registry. It has very unique architecture and the furnishings are consistent with the home design. It was a real treat to explore the nuisances and the home’s character. We had a great time with our family. Two blocks east is downtown. Great location for a walk. Straight west is access to highway 50 toward Monarch. Could not have been more pleased.

The Absolutely Perfect Home in Salida!
Wow! Where do I start? My family of six has traveled the globe and stayed in VRBO rentals all over. This one ranks up there in our top list, because its got so much history and amazing quirks to it! Yes, it had all the amenities we needed and was perfectly appointed with the essentials, and it was walking distance from town and all the services, that's for sure, but the home itself was our favorite part. This house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and for a reason! It's amazing inside, there is a basement walk-in safe, and what looks like a cold war bunker and radio. So much cool history in the architecture and design of the place. It was an amazing home away from home! Not recommended for young children because there are lots of breakable art fixtures in the home, but we loved it! Such a wonderful home and perfectly located within walking distance of everything in town.

Beautiful home in a wonderful town
This is our 6th or 7th trip to Salida but the first time at the Heister House -- it was lovely and a great location for the long weekend. We were happy to be on the quiet, beautiful street above town, with easy walking distance to restaurants and shops. Check in/out were easy as was communication with Wendy.

A great historic place. It was fun scoping out the little details and having an opportunity to play the piano! We enjoyed the quiet and the deer.

Heister House
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Salida and the Heister House was one of the most interesting homes we have ever stayed in. It is truly a walk back in time, reminiscent of maybe your grandparents' home and furniture. The home is very comfortable and bigger than it seems. The basement part of the home has a very comfortable tv viewing area and was very cool in the evenings. We would recommend this home and would certainly rent it again should we venture back to the mountains!
