About this house rental
Your Cooke City Mountain House is the ideal vacation home rental to enjoy the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park and the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains. Make this your relaxing basecamp or personal private retreat summer, fall, winter, and spring.
Why stay with us? The views! Enjoy sweeping mountain views from the upstairs living, dining, kitchen, and large deck. There are two stories, a loft, and a large private yard for everyone to spread out and relax. Walk to all the services in town. The house is well located on the main road, mid-town toward the quiet end, and sits at the back of the property, offering privacy from Main Street. Stay just one night! We don't require a multi-day stay, and we don't charge an additional cleaning fee. Due to COVID-19, we are taking extra care to disinfect frequently touched surfaces between reservations.
Amenities: A south-facing cathedral ceiling and window wall invite the outside in. The great room, eat-in kitchen, master bedroom, and full bath are upstairs to take advantage of the sweeping 180-degree park and mountain views. Watch the weather roll up the valley, the sun's light painting the face of Mount Republic and the Fin, while you cook in the fully-equipped kitchen. French doors open to a large deck, where you will enjoy spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Sip your morning coffee at the built-in bar and plan your day's adventures while the mountains, valley, and town wake up.
The home also offers a large open loft area. Downstairs there is a common area near the wood stove with a futon couch, a 3/4 bath, two more bedrooms, and a laundry room. We offer unlimited Wi-Fi, satellite TV, landline phone, dishwasher, and washer and dryer to provide all the luxuries of home. There is also a large private yard with lawn, and off-street parking.
Location, location, location. The Cooke City Mountain House is four miles from the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Head into Yellowstone for the day to watch wolves, grizzly bears, bison, and elk in the world-famous Lamar Valley. Drive east, and you're on the Beartooth Highway, described by former CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt as "'the most beautiful drive in America." If you survive the drive and continue to the other side of the Beartooth Pass, you can enjoy the quaint, historic town of Red Lodge, Montana. You can also day trip over the spectacular Chief Joseph Scenic Highway to Cody, Wyoming, and visit the Buffalo Bill Museum while enjoying Western hospitality.
Endless activities await. Walk to shopping, dining, bars, and the Cooke City Montana Museum and Chamber of Commerce. Hike, backpack, and fish from the door, and disappear into the wilderness. Mountain bike dirt roads and trails to scenic destinations. In the winter, ski directly into the Absoroka-Beartooth Mountains. You can also snowmobile right from the door to all the trails outside of town, no need to trailer your machines or drive to parking areas in town. What do you want to do today? We can help you plan your visit. Please get in touch!
Highlights by season:
Spring: Quiet! Crazy weather, snow to sun to rain. Best time to watch wildlife, baby animals! Ski and snowmobile, or hike, depending on which way you go. Park roads begin to open. The road east of Cooke City to the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (Wyoming Highway 296) usually opens the first weekend in May. The Beartooth Highway (US Highway 212) usually opens the Friday morning of Memorial Day weekend, depending on weather.
Summer: Roads are open. Wildflowers are out. Prime visitor season. Opportunities are endless.
Fall: Quiet! Fall colors. The Beartooth Highway closes early October, and the road east of Cooke City to the Chief Joseph Highway usually closes soon after. Park roads begin to close.
Winter: Wonderland! Ski, snowmobile. Watch wildlife in the park's Lamar Valley.
Tip/Caution:
Yellowstone National Park is huge! It has five entrances, and Cooke City is at its Northeast Entrance. The road to Cooke City from Gardiner, Montana, through the park is open year-round. The road from Cooke City east to Red Lodge and Cody is closed to vehicles (open to snowmobiles) during the winter. Cooke City currently has no cellular phone service. Throughout Yellowstone, cell service is limited, and Verizon cell phones get the best reception. If you are visiting the area for the first time, please get in touch with questions.

The location is a little odd. Sort of off an alley . Not very attractive. When entering, it wasn't what we expected. Don't judge on first entry. The upstairs is very nice with a lovely view of the mountain and setting sun just out the kitchen window. Cooke City is such a cute mountain town and just off of Lamar Valley. Lots of room.

We enjoyed our stay at this Cooke City cabin/home. The upstairs was newly redecorated with a great view from the family room of the mountains. All amenities fit our needs, especially the fully stocked kitchen. Bill was easy to communicate with and answered our questions promptly. We loved how closely the home was to the park entrance.

The property was exactly as described and incredibly accommodating for our group of seven adults. Plenty of comfortable beds, two bathrooms, sizeable kitchen and awesome deck. Host was very responsive and quick to respond to my inquiries. Will definitely stay again.

This home was absolutely gorgeous! It had all the comforts of home right outside Yellowstone! The living area is beautiful with a huge couch that fit all 6 adults. Although we didn’t have a lot of time for sitting! We he home is situated in Cooke City which is a quaint little town with a great coffee shop. It is just minutes from the NorthEast Entrance of Yellowstone. Having to drive through the Lamar Valley each time we entered the park did make for long drives, but also we got to drive through the Lamar Valley which is amazing for animal viewing!!! We hope to come back to Yellowstone again because in our opinion it is the GOAT, and if we do, we would definitely stay with n this home again!!!

We loved this quaint little town! Absolutely no cell service in town, so if you don’t have check-in info then you need to go to the visitors center/museum to log into WiFi. If you do have check-in info, I would suggest taking a screen shot of it so that you can access it without service. The home has plenty of room to spread out after too many hours cramped in the car together. The home also has WiFi. The General Store is a do not miss stop. And Miners Saloon was delicious! You can walk everywhere, as the town is very small. Raspberry bear claw from the Sinclair station was the perfect breakfast (the breakfast sandwiches left a lot to be desired though).

This house was the perfect spot to act as our base camp during our stay. Close to Yellowstone park entrance and nestled in Cooke City, yet offered solice at the end of a long day. Property is clean and inviting, our family felt right at home. Host was very nice and welcoming. Will book again if ever in the area!

We stayed here for four nights. Our family was split across three other cabins. We loved the location and everything was taken care of for us by the owner. We never did meet him, but that's okay because we had no problems and he was available if we needed him. Great place to stay in Cooke City.

The house itself is very clean and comfortable and is only a short drive away from Lamar valley. All in all, it is a fantastic spot to visit the east part of the Yellowstone.

This was a great house for a one night pass through from Beartooth into Yellowstone. Really great views of the mountains and walkable to everything in town. Highly recommended

We had a great time while staying here. Nice clean property. Just minutes from the park where we saw countless animals. Even woke up to a moose in the yard one morning. The only thing I can say bad is that it is a little hard to find if you arrive after dark. I would recommend this property to anyone and if I come to Yellowstone again I will try to book this place

The house was very beautiful, warm and welcoming. We enjoyed the morning view eating breakfast in the kitchen. The kids loved the upstairs setup and kid friendly area. The decor was also very pleasing! We were excited to see the option of many different books, games and other activities. The house was clean and very comfortable! We loved that there was coffee pot and coffee available to make. We will love to stay again. It was incredible!

We stayed here with a group of six for our annual backcountry ski trip. It's our fifth winter visit to Cooke City. Like most of the houses in Cooke, this place has a bit of an unusual layout, but it works and is very practical. The kitchen and living space are the highlight of the house with an amazing view of the Fin and great afternoon light. The coffee shop next door is a gem with a nice selection of books. The owner of the house was extremely accommodating and easy to work with. For those with kids, there is a loft that they would love (probably not ideal for adults). Would definitely recommend.

Exceeded our expectations for our ski trip/ birthday celebration. Bill had great communication and the cabin was more than enough room for 8 people. Very special spot and property. We love your home and Cooke City!! Will be back.

We just completed our most recent stay at the Cooke City Mountain House for our annual snowmobile trip. As usual, we had a great time and the Mountain House was key to the success and enjoyment of our trip! It is a great place to stay! Highly recommended!! The Blackford’s are great hosts!!

Awesome, comfortable and easy access to everything! The only thumbs down is both bathrooms had previously used bars of soap. Other than that, what a great place, we’d stay again! Thank you!

The place was excellent. Very nice. Only issues were we were trying to find in the dark with no service. Was a bit of a challenge given the cabin is actually behind the main street address through a fence. Other issue was no bath soaps were in the cabin - no shampoo, conditioner, or body wash.

Cooke City is a cute old mining town. The house was a good stopping point after our flight in Billings. It is just a few miles from the northeast entrance of Yellowstone.
The house worked for our family of 4. Plenty of beds for everyone. The entrance is actually behind a store on the Main Street, so it was a little confusing, but we found it.
We went in early October, but a lot of the stores and part of Beartooth Hwy were already closed for the season.

My family and I stayed one night at this property and it was perfect. (6 adults) We wanted to explore the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone both at dusk and dawn and having the ability to rent this property for one night was sincerely perfect. We were comfortable, slept well, and enjoyed the location. Cooke City is tiny yet had everything we needed. It was great.

Comfortable stay with everything we needed for a family trip to Yellowstone! Excellent jumping off point to hit Lamar Valley for sunrise and sunset with enough options nearby for food and gas! Fast WiFi was great for catching up after a day at the park. Would definitely return :)

Home/cabin has plenty of room for family and was super clean. Has a great view of mountain peaks right from the deck. Easy access/parking and everything Cooke City has to offer is within walking distance. Less than a ten minute drive to Yellowstone Park entrance, or head the opposite direction and explore the Beartooth Pass area. One evening we even had a Bison wander thru the neighborhood. Definitely give it a thumbs up!

We loved the upstairs living area with all the windows. Great views of the mountains!
